Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony
— DrewM

Aside from figure skating of any sort, I'm totally in the tank for the Winter Olympics. I'm also not interested in the Opening and Closing crap, too North Koreanish for me but some may enjoy it, so here's a thread*.

Sure we don't have the Soviets to kick around anymore and the Scandis win way too much but I love the Winter Olympics because you see stuff you never see otherwise. When else do you get to see Bobsledding, Luge and the Biathlon. Hell they even compete in something called "Skeleton" because Luge just wasn't crazy enough. The best parts of course are Hockey and Curling.

The hockey tournament starts on Tuesday and in my never ending quest to lift you non-hockey philistines out of your football induced stupor, I'll be doing some Olympic Hockey blogging along with tmi3rd during the tournament. We'll begin sometime on Sunday with a preview of the teams and maybe a primer on the game in general for those of you who need it.

Unfortunately, there was some tragic news today before the games get underway. A member of the Georgia Luge Team was killed in a training crash.

*I know not everyone is a Winter Olympics or sports enthusiast but don't worry, this thread isn't at the expense of some more typical AoSHQ fare (whatever that is). Just relax, like a bus, there'll be another one along any minute.

No matter what happens in the next two weeks however, it will not top this great Olympic moment.

Thanks Obama!

8 I like the Winter games because they aren't in such commercial sports.  And the skating clothing is just so gay and usually in bad taste...

11 BIATHLON!
Ski really hard, shoot true offhand; ski really hard, shoot true prone; repeat. Try to do either one well, to say nothing of combining them in the same event!
An additional plus is that some of the women are exactly my type, and they compete in lycra. What's even better is that they're armed!
Check it out!

29 I don't know, maybe I'm just too idealistic, but I still remember one of my elementary school teachers telling us about the Olympics: about how they were all about our best aspirations, how politics and national rivalry played no part, how the athletes played for the glory of sport and not money. HA! What a joke! The Olympics have devolved into NOTHING but a propaganda and marketing tool. Sure, most athletes are in it for the sport, but a few are milking them for every penny. Others are on nothing but an ego trip - like the "snow bunnies" posing semi-naked in the snow for that calendar. Sure, I bet it's supposedly for a charity or something, but come on... it's at least equal part, "Look at ME! I'm hawt!!" Then we have the spectacle of professional tennis stars coming to the Olympics - so much for the ideal of "amateur" competition. And what the hell was the "Dream Team" with Michael Jordan & Company? Sure, they're good - but who could anyone call that a competition? (Of course, the Soviets did the same thing for decades with their full time hockey team) We've had Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia, and now Red China use the games as nothing but an advertisement for the wonders of repressive totalitarianism. Enough already!!!! I wish someone would mercifully pull the plug on the mockery of Ancient Greek ideals the Games have become, and let them once more rest in peace.

Way O/T, but huge news (especially for The People's Republic of Seattle) and gun rights (From KOMO News):

SEATTLE -- The law has sided with the Kent man who took the city of Seattle and former Mayor Greg Nickels to court over the city's gun ban.

King County Superior Court Judge Catherine Shaffer on Friday ruled in favor of Robert C. Warden, declaring the city of Seattle's gun ban at public places children are likely to frequent is in direct violation of Washington state's firearm pre-emption law.

In issuing the ruling, Shaffer wrote, "Seattle's Department of Parks and Recreation's Rule/Policy Number P 060-8.14 ("Firearms Rule") violates Washington law and on that basis, is null and void."

The city has been ordered to remove all signage banning weapons from public areas within 30 days.

268 The US will probably make it to the medal round this time, probably taking bronze. If Miller gets hot in goal, a silver or gold may not be out of the question. This year instead of making the team an all star team as in the past, they put the team together as a "team". Canada seems to be shooting for the "all star" lineup this time to try to appease the hometown fans.

Russia and the damn Swedes will probably be the class of the field. Ovechkin is the best player in the world, and Malkin is not too far behind. The Swedes have the typical players, and the Sedins are absolute magic on the ice together.

293 290 Can we send some orthodontists over to Great Britain?  (I know my friends are bad)

Well, straight teeth are way low on the list of priorities when people can't even get basic dental care (remember those stories of Brits pulling their own abcessed teeth?)  If the Democrats get their way, braces in the U.S. will no longer be a basic Constitutional right or a rite of passage for American children.

DrewM, for me, one of the coolest things was seeing George W. Bush at the Opening Ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake.  Remember that ice skater (name escapes me) that was talking on the phone to her mom, and the President said "hello" to her mom.  Way cool.  I also thought it was really badass of him to go to that first Yankees game after 9/11 and throw out the first pitch, a perfect strike with a bullet proof vest on.  (And as a Phillies fan, I hate the Pinstriped Pukes).  But that night, "Nous sommes Yankees".

rumor has it that there were major complaints about that track.  Sometimes I think they don't realize the "need for speed" and "to break a record" is not that important when you think a human being is well, a human being and you can't always perform perfectly.   A 50 -50 chance of taking that turn ok isn't good odds
