"A Deep Cess-Pool of Creativity:" AoSHQ Movie Club
— Ace

I had an idea to try this for a while. We pick a movie, watch it, I review it in a lead post, but the review only really is a jumping off point for group discussion.

With so many people on Netflix it's pretty easy.

steve_in_hb just recommended to me "Overnight," a 2003 documentary about the guy who wrote Boondock Saints.

I've never seen the movie (I've heard it's kinda awful, though for some reason it has a cult following), but I was interested by steve's plot summary:

1. Boston tough-guy bartender/bouncer is plucked out of obscurity and given a million-dollar deal for his script (and his band, actually).

2. Guy makes a lot of videos of himself and his friends after the deal talking about how awesome he is and how he and his band/entourage (called "The Syndicate") will forever change how people view music and film, because, he says, they have "a deep cess-pool of creativity" (and he didn't mean that in a funny way).

3. Guy's fundamental nature as first-class egotist and all-around asshole causes friction and then vows by most people in Hollywood to never work with him again.

4. Guy returns to being a bartender/bouncer.

If that interests you, it's available at Netflix (at the link above) as a play-over-your-computer option. I think I'll also watch Boondock Saints and see if this movie really had the potential, as this guy alleged, to completely remake our conception of entertainment. I kinda suspect not. (That's also free for playing over the computer.)

So, sort of a double feature, if you want to bother with the second feature.

I'll put up a review/discussion post on Tuesday or Wednesday.

1 So, Boondock Saints is sorta like Rocky, only the protagonist is an unlikable asshole.

2 Another interesting indie flick, also available to "watch instantly" via Netflix, is "Big Fan," a comedy-drama about an obsessed NY Giants fan (Patton Oswalt). Could generate a good discussion about whether the main character is a sad loser or a quiet man of integrity (or both?). Oswalt is very good in it, though the story is a little thin.

3 Or rather, Overnight is Rocky without the charm.  Got it now.

5 Boondock Saints was a cinematic masterpiece. I'll even dip 'em in marinara so you get a taste of home. And I'm pretty sure the documentary, or part of it, was included on the Boondock Saints Special Edition DVD. It was kind of boring, but fun to watch a guy kill his own dream.

12 He also insisted and got the right to direct his own script, didn't he? More recently, the studios paid a New York tolltaker big bucks for the script to Brooklyn's Finest. Despite giving it a great cast and director, the movie didn't do very well at the box office. So either the studios screw up great scripts, or they suffer mass hysteria in which if one exec likes a mediocre script, suddenly every other exec in town tries to get it because of the fear that their competitor might have found the next Rocky.

speaking of indie crap...

there's a new very-low-budget sci-fi series being made right now called PIONEER ONE completely financed by online donations. The first ep is out and it's pretty good.

Problem is they won't make more until they raise more $$, so the eps won't be shown regularly.

Posted by: i hear bing frickin crosby in my ears at night at July 10, 2010 09:24 AM (/i4c2)

17

yeah, you make a good point...

Sharky's Machine would be 62% more better if there was actually a machine in the movie.

Maybe a time machine?

Sharky can use his machine to go back in time and tell Burt Reynolds not to make HOOPER.

18 boondock saints is like a cross between death wish and gran torino. A movie that has, at one end, Ron Jeremy and Jeanna Fine, and at the other has Billy Connelly and Willem Dafoe? I gotta 2nd what #5/ChicagoJedi said. Most I know really like it.

Posted by: A.G. at July 10, 2010 09:26 AM (qrKUQ)

19 Can I get a Cliff Notes version?

Two Irish brothers go full vigilante and wipe a crime syndicate.  FBI and local cops pursue them, but later on the FBI agent (played by Willem Dafoe) eventually comes around to their side and helps them out.

Boondock Saints 2:  more of the same, except Julie Benz (Dexter) is the FBI agent this time coming after the Irish bros who fled to Ireland after the first movie, come back after hearing about their fav priest getting murdered by their signature kill move (two bullets to the back of the head, crossing, and exiting out the opposite eye).

21 If we're recommending movies I'll nominate: DEAD MAN [Jim Jarmusch] - Weird western starring Johnny Depp, DEAD SNOW [Tommy Wirkola] - Scandis versus Zombie Nazis!!!, SIX-STRING SAMURAI [Lance Mungia] - Buddy Holly versus Grim Reaper with swords, THE GATE [Tibor Takacs] - vastly underrated horror film from the 80's, and the classic MONSTER SQUAD [Fred Dekker] - Wolfman has nards.

Posted by: ChicagoJedi at July 10, 2010 09:31 AM (WZFkG)

22 The problem with reviewing small budget indie "avant-garde" stuff is that 99% of it is liberal crap with piss poor actors and script.

The critics like to review that stuff and use a lot of big terms to impress us Morons with their knowledge of "art" and to justify their jobs. I throw the BS flag on them.

Even trying to review the Hollywood big budget pictures is tough nowadays because most of what is being produced now is some type of damn sequel.

I will say though that the Star Trek movie turned out totally different than what I had expected and I mean that in a good way.

Boondock Saints is an awesome movie. Willem Dafoe's turn as the FBI agent was probably his best role ever. Haven't seen the second one yet, but my guess is it doesn't even come close to recreating the first.

As far as the documentary goes, its pretty good to and makes Troy Duffy appear to be every bit of the narcissistic douchebag he is.

Posted by: Blazer at July 10, 2010 09:34 AM (t72+4)

24 Despite giving it a great cast and director, the movie didn't do very well at the box office.

It made almost a 50% profit, before the DVD even came out.

The movies studios are least willing to make are guaranteed high-percentage/small-total moneymakers by directors who only need funding. Financing profitable films isn't the business anyone at any major studio thinks they're in.

Probably the best example is David Lynch. He has a three-decade career of batting a thousand on profitability (even on Dune, for f's sake), and he can't get a film studio-financed, because all he'll do for them is make them huge profits. That's not the business.

Posted by: oblig. at July 10, 2010 09:36 AM (x7Ao8)

25 Boondock Saints is pure awesome... the sequel is pure crap. It was as though the director said, "Hey, you know what this gritty super-violent indy movie needs? More wacky, zany antics and slapstick!"

29 I saw Boondock Saints a while ago.  I didn't know that that was the title to it, though after reading the synopsis I realize that it was this movie.  I generally liked it.  It didn't make all too much sense (from what I recall) and the action scenes were a bit much, but I remember liking the movie.  The dialogue was good and the prayer they said before they killed people was pretty awesome.

I did like what I saw, though I don't think I made it to the end of the movie.  There's no question that I wouldn't be interested in any documentary "about" the movie or in a sequel of it.  But I did enjoy the first hour of the film and found it fun as hell.

Boondock Saints is Tarantino Lite. All the violence  with two thirds less witty dialog. I saw the documentary first  and only watched the movie because of it. Troy Duffy is an instant asshole, just add money. The doc is better than the movie.

Uh, let's see.  BS had a budget of $6 million.  By conventional math, it needed to make about $12 million at the box office before breaking even.

It made $30,471 dollars domestically (seriously) and about $220,000 foreign.

The film made a lot on home video, millions in fact, hence the sequel.  But clearly there was no way it was close to recouping its costs before then.  The sequel did better at the box office, but not nearly enough to break even.  The home video revenues probably pushed it into profitability, but not by much.  Don't expect a third chapter any time soon.

Shit, what the hell else haven't you seen? Fight Club? Snatch? Pulp Fiction? El Mariachi? Do you even watch action movies. How the hell can you miss this. I have to stop reading your blog until you correct this omission. Seriously, it's like a nerd blogger who never saw The Princess Bride.

Get the idea. Boondock is that class of movie. In fact very much that type of movie. It isn't innovative, or brilliant, but since you're just seeing it now you clueless twit, you'll think the stuff that it did that was new is a cliche. Brilliant take and play on the "detective recreates crime scene" cliche.

One of the great cult / surreal / action / funny movies of our time.

56 I liked Boondock Saints, but it was hardly revolutionary in any sense.  It has some wit and a funny premise, but it would be like Ace declaring his blog a complete re-making of the Internet landscape to take the creator's claims seriously.  It benefitted from Willem Dafoe and Billy Connolley as much as it did from the script.

The biggest reason it didn't get released for several years is because Troy Duffy made fast enemies of Harvey Weinstein and essentially got blacklisted and destroyed any goodwill he had built up in Hollywood in a very short time. Its a shame too because the guy had the world in his hands at the time and threw away an epic opportunity.

You could also say he pretty much destroyed the careers of Sean Patrick Flannery and Norman Reedus who as the two brothers were great . Hell everyone in this flick is awesome, but I think those two suffered the most from Duffy's over inflated ego in the long run.

92 73 Oldboy rules. Sympathy for Mr Violence Sympathy for Lady Violence are the two other movies of that trilogy. Oldboy is the middle movie. It's a thematic trilogy so the movies don't really interconnect. All of them are great but Oldboy exists in it's own universe of greatness. @71 Don't forget AUDITION. Morons, if you've never seen Audition. Well, you've missed out on horror greatness. Don't read anything about it. Don't look at the photos on the box as they are spoilers. Just rent it and watch. The stuff of nightmares that one. One of my favorite Japanese movies is an old school serial killer movie called "Vengence is Mine". Available from Criterion Collection Blockbuster and Netflix. Pure awesome. Pure greatness. Pure genius from casting to direction to script. And not what you think it will be at all. Do yourself a favor and see it.

95 I never said all these films were great, but they are great to discuss on AoS. In that spirit... I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE - longest rape scene in a movie and sweet sweet revenge, TRANSYLVANIA 6-5000 - where do I begin?, CABIN BOY - cause these pipes are clean, VERY BAD THINGS - dark comedy, LET IT RIDE - Richard Dreyfuss is a degenerate gambler, KUNG POW - open your mouth, and TOUCH OF EVIL - morbidly obese Welles and Mexican Heston.

Should we discuss the realism? How well the actors performed their parts? About how she did/didn't have it coming? Whether women should dress a certain way? OH! I know...It's the revenge thing, right?

Well, if revenge is to the be topic, then might I suggest a Charles Bronson movie? Or, perhaps, Unforgiven...or Gran Torino...or one of any number of movies other than I Spit on Your Grave.

104 I liked Boondock Saints, particularly the performance by Wilem DeFoe.

105 Boondock Saints is a classic uber-violent guy movie. Fun movie. Two low-class, low-life, sociopathic scumbags decide to violently rid the world of ... low-class, low-life, sociopathic scumbags. The fun part is they do this with no sense of irony or awareness of their own scumbag nature, they think they are frickin heroes on a holy mission from God.

It's the cinematic equivalent of the Islamic anti-homosexuality police in AfPak who are determined to stamp out  homosexuality by ... gang-raping any man they think is the ghey.

109 #100 - I Spit on Your Grave could work. Most people haven't heard about it. Those that have still aren't prepared. I mean what's their reference point - The Accused? No amount of pre-viewing gossip will make them ready. And it's not just the rape scene. How many movies have a naked woman wielding a knife in one hand and steering a motorboat with the other. It's a revenge classic.

120 For revenge flicks, Kevin Bacon's Death Sentence is surprisingly competent. It's not great or anything. But it did surprise me with its basic (low-budget) strength. I decided it was a good movie when Bacon was being chased by thugs and there was a long barely uninterrupted shaky-cam shot of his flight. (POV, I think, but don't hold me to that.) I usually hate shaky-cam, but here it was deployed well, as it did add to the emotion, that this guy is running/stumbling/gasping along for his life.

What you said, Joanie, but I didn't wanna get into one chica's disappointment later in the evening when I didn't quite measure up to Mr Peterbilt....

But our re-enactment of the "black sock" bit was teh awesome!

Other, cleaner movies that won't give you a headache from trying to take in all that important societal shit (if I want education on the screen, I'll watch Blood on the Pavement): Death Race 2000, Motorama, Volere Volare (a truly bizarre and hilarious Italian flick), Killer Klowns From Outer Space.

I do recommend avoiding Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. I like to think Russ was just in it for the money.

118..

Yeah. I've never really understood the appeal of that one either. It's good, but there are certainly better chick-flicks out there.

As for She's Having a Baby, I've never seen a man deviate from course at the end. For all the humor, it's pretty complicated. And, another I love, which also stars Kevin Bacon, is He Said, She Said. Very charming.

I love the action and suspense movies, although I'm not a Tarantino fan, but I like a bit of charm as well. Good movies that happen to appeal to women are great for taking down the tension a bit.

125 Death Sentence has a different take on the Avenging Vigilate formula, too: He's not a virtual superhero like Death Wish's Paul Keasey (is that name right) or, to a lesser extent, Jodie Foster in the very-watchable The Brave One. I mean, the guy is realistic in the sense that he has no idea how to go about hunting down and killing the gangbangers who murdered his son. He throws himself into dangerous situations and he's not in control of them most of the time. And the gangbangers hit back, kind of realistically, that is to say, awfully.

Posted by: ace at July 10, 2010 11:32 AM (5Geca)

126 I mean: He's compelled to do these things, but he doesn't actually have the skills to do these things. So it's more suspenseful than the usual Vigilante fare. This guy has righteous anger but not really the rest of the skill set.

Ms. .45 is much better for that.

So I'm also gonna watch Kagemusha.  Why does Ho-wood keep remaking crap?  So many older films are so brilliant--what, does every film have to ben an "indie" nowadays in order to be original and interesting?

131 I'm not doing I Spit On Your Grave, no way. I think that rape scene had a distinct touch of the lascivious. That is, it wasn't just (to me) presented as something awful, it was supposed to be titilating too. At least that's the vibe I got.

I watched Rocky again last week. I had forgotten just how good it is. And, by "good" I mean GREAT. The whole story of how he fought to have it made. I watched a film talked about yesterday called Threads.  Good grief.Because I'm a moron

Think that's bad? Ever come across a film called "The War Game"? Only about an hour long, and far more depressing.

161 Perhaps I'm not as discerning as some of you, but I liked The Professional. Me too. It's the only Natalie Portman performance that's in any way watchable. Personally, I think that the two horsemen of the apocalypse George Lucas and Harvard ruined her.

163 I added Dark Star to my queue, thanks guys. Fun movie. Just keep in mind that Dark Star is ultra, ultra low budget, more of a student film than studio film. Dan O'Bannon, co-writer of "Alien" is the lead actor. "Alien" was O'Bannon's response to his DS experience, even though the two films don't have THAT much in common.

164 Just watched "The Jungle Book" with the boy. (Disney version). He thinks Mowgli was stupid leaving the jungle for a girl. Wolves and bears are much cooler, apparently.

Now we're about to watch the new "Alice In Wonderland"

Descent had me climbing the walls over the amazing feel of claustrophobia.  That was agonizing!  In the dark, no sky above...ACK!

Weird War Tales!!! I was big on the scary comics as a kid. Hated, hated, hated the superheros.

Oh, god, the idiot italics I can't get rid of!  Anyway, I read one EERIE that still gives me nightmares, about body parts in a Parisian sewer.  SHUDDER!

168 Don't watch Boondock Saints. It's bad. Last movie I saw in the theatre was Iron Man 2, which was cool. Last TV movie I watched was... I think a Sci-Fi channel one called Princess of Mars, which was awful, even considering the different perspective you watch Sci-Fi channel movies with because you watch them to see how awful they are. So anyways, I'll recommend the documentary Grizzly Man because there's a surprise ending!

I've always been a fan (for some reason), of nuclear war films. But if I had to rate them, in descending order, it would be:

"The Day After". (KC, where I live, gets destroyed}

"Threads" (Follows some people in England pre and post nuke}

"The War Game" ( Semi-doc made in the early '60's, about what would happen in a nuclear war. BBC refused to show it on TV).

Posted by: HH at July 10, 2010 12:27 PM (6oDXl)

172 A Scanner Darkly, animated something or other.

I believe this is your only opportunity to see Winona Ryder's lovely tatas, animated or otherwise.

I thought it was a pretty decent flick.

About 12 years ago, I saw in the paper that they were having a special showing of the films of atomic and hydrogen bomb blasts. They had been (may still be) stored in a government bunker disguised as a ranch house in the Hollywood Hills. (no shit!) I was all excited about seeing them. The blasts to me are both beautiful and frightening. Anyway, I couldn't get in. It was by invitation only. Unfair!

Posted by: moi at July 10, 2010 12:34 PM (bjYAr)

177

Weirdo.

That's Me!

Several other films I would recommend. "The Atomic Cafe", and "The Atomic Bomb Movie".

Both documentaries. Quite interesting, if you like the subject.

Posted by: HH at July 10, 2010 12:40 PM (6oDXl)

178 A few months back, one of the morons on the ONT linked a documentary of nuclear blast photography from the US, Russia and China. The big finish was the Chinese horse cavalry charge into a nuclear blast zone. Pretty sure that this is it, but the footage is used in a different documentary. http://tinyurl.com/28843ob

Check out Nightbreaker. It has some pretty awesome footage in it including a disturbing one that tested a blast out on pigs. That bacon got cooked real quick.

The doc is ok. The movie was not totally horrible--it had moments. Not safe for cat lovers. Kitteh gets exploded. Willem Dafoe---wtf? A silly, sly tough gay detective or meh? I'd have to go back and look at his performance. But I have no interest in seeing this thing twice. So, bleh. There is a sequel. I'll skip it.

I liked Dafoe in Antichrist. The movie however, is not safe for those who enjoy feelings of genital safety and well being.

184 MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN is another good one. Stars Brad Cooper from A-Team and Hangover. Based on a Clive Barker story. Vinnie Jones with a giant hammer.

185 Looking at the top 50 movies of 2009 (2009 because it gives chance for DVD issue) I looked at how many I have actually watched and what I felt about them:

#20 - Harry Potter/Half Blood Prince - I thought it was typical of the later HP stuff, OK but no big deal.

#10 - The Hangover - Note that I didn't buy this or rent it. My neighbor gave it to me when she bought a Blu-Ray by mistake and didn't realize it until it wouldn't play. I thought the movie sucked.

#8 - Star Trek - Spacer battle scenes were awesome. Good movie - probably the best movie of 2009.

$4 - Hurt Locker - OK but no big deal

$2 - Up - Schmaltzy Pixar. The rating group thought it was the best Pixar ever. I give it an OK+

Interesting that out of 50 of the top rated movies I only watched 5.

Not on the list at all

Knowing - Spooky semi-religious SiFi film with spectacular Fx and a sock-o ending. Good movie and second best of 2009 but evidently the critics hated it.

191 I would also recommend Dog Soldiers, as a previous poster had. Great werewolf movie that uses puppets and no cgi(i think). It works because the characters are great and there's a lot of bullets and knives and shit.

Posted by: yambles at July 10, 2010 02:15 PM (rxaXW)

192 Some more "off my rocker" picks... DEVIL'S RAIN - William Shatner, Tom Skerritt, John Travolta, and Ernest Borgnine as satanic priest Corbis. HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER - Rucker at his best. GENTLEMAN BRONCOS - an offbeat comedy about an young aspiring sf writer with great performances by Jemaine Clement and Sam Rockwell. SUKIYAKI WESTERN DJANGO - cause Samurai Cowboys rocks. And because I spit on Your Grave caused such a stir... IRREVERSIBLE with Monica Belluci.

Posted by: ChicagoJedi at July 10, 2010 02:17 PM (WZFkG)

193 I heartily recommend that nobody get Overnight (2003) via the torrents, because that would be wrong.

I'm thinking that Incubus (1966) deserves a group look. By 1967, the three main stars counted one murder-suicide and one regular suicide. The third had become captain of the USS Enterprise. Plus, the entire film is in Esperanto with English subtitles. Yum!

I seem to remember Winona Rider briefly topless in Heathers. Or did I dream that?

Has AoSHQ weighed in on The Human Centipede yet? Chocolatey goodness.

Posted by: Little Miss Spellcheck at July 10, 2010 02:21 PM (a5ljo)

195 #196 Definitely worth mentioning. If you like South Park you'll like this. Great songs. BLIND FURY - Rutger Hauer is a blind swordsman. QUIGLEY DOWN UNDER - Stop calling me Sam! ARMED AND DANGEROUS - John Candy and Eugene Levy star in an anti-union film as security guards. Look for a young Meg Ryan too. ROGUE - A decent killer croc movie. CRANK 1 & 2 - the epitome of mindless fun. THANK YOU FOR SMOKING - it somehow leaves you rooting for the tobacco industry and lobbyists. OUTLANDER - Jim Caveizel is a space man who tracks a monster to a Viking settlement on Earth. TAKEN - if you haven't seen it do so. DRAG ME TO HELL - Sam Raimi gets back to horror. MOON - great scifi movie starring Sam Rockwell. A must see. BRONSON - Tom Hardy puts in an amazing performance as a notorious criminal. THE SIGNAL - got lost amongst a lot of crappy but similar titles out that year.

Red Cliff is a great movie and available on demand from Netflix.  Actually there's more by Johnny Woo there, just as good.

I'm sorry, I thought we wanted revenge movies, that's why I recommended "A Reason to Live, A Reason to Die".

207 We had three DVDs in Iraq in '03 on the assault north. Band of Brothers, The Boondock Saints, and Where The Boys Aren't #16. Troy Duffy IS an egotistical asshole, but I was in an infantry squad in the 101st that was VERY proud of being mostly Irish. We must have watched that movie fifty fucking times since '01. We wanted to change our call sign to "Saints" but got told no.

One of our guard towers on our camp in Mosul had the entire McManus family prayer on the wall, and I know a guy who claimed he got all the way through it before he pulled the trigger on an insurgent with an RPG. It's one of those movies that either you get it or you don't.

"Destroy all that which is evil, so that which is good may flourish".  Sort of describes my view of fundamentalist Islam.

Liked the Saints, but the sequel was crap. As someone above stated, the slapstick BS ruined the movie.

Man on Fire--excellent movie.

Hot Fuzz, very good movie.

Law Abiding Citizen is another very good movie.
