A Song Resurrected from the Vaults....

Get it? I'm bringing to life a relatively obscure Dylan gospel song that you probably aren't all that familiar with. So it's from the vaults. On Easter. And it's a gospel song. It all ties together. I'm so clever.

Anyway, long time AoSHQ readers (and I mean long time....I havent done a post on this topic in years) will know that I am a huge Dylan fan. And he is actually in the news today, as the ChiComs have refused to allow him to perform in Beijing and Shanghai.

After Tiananmen Square, I suppose the Reds aren't too keen to hear "The Times They Are A-Changing".

Nevertheless, this story has given me an excuse to post one of my favorite Dylan tunes. It's from his so-called "Gospel phase" and first appeared on the album "Saved". It's a bluesy little track called "What Can I Do For You?"

This is the only YouTube vid I could find of the studio performance of the song (there are several live versions). What makes this one of my favorite Dylan songs?

The harmonica playing. In my opinion, this relatively obscure song contains the best harmonica playing Dylan ever put to vinyl. This is especially true of the last 50 seconds or so...the interplay of the harmonica and the church organ from 5:05-5:55 is pure auditory heaven.

(See how I worked that Heaven reference in there? It's talent like that that makes me a front pager here.)

Anyway, I know Dylan (especially gospel Dylan) isn't gonna be everyone's cup of tea. Just remember: if you hate on Dylan the ChiComs have already won.

To make it up to you haters, though, I'll tell y'all a joke so that you will leave the post with something:

36 Steevy, That's an interesting question. His music has always contained abundant references to Biblical imagery ("God said to Abraham kill me a son" in Highway 61 Revisited as one example). In the mid-late 70's he converted from Judaism to Christianity, actually embracing a pretty fundamentalist strain. It was during this time that his trilogy of gospel albums came out ("Slow train Coming, Saved, Shot of Love"). As the 80's progressed he seemed to move away from fundamentalist Christianity and seemed to re-embrace his Jewish roots. The "Under the Red Sky" album features a photo taken during a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. A lot of his work to this day retains a lot of Judeo-Christian religious imagery. "Ring them Bells" off of "Oh Mercy" is a prime example.

40 Just an update/progress report on how my Easter is progressing. I could only find some specialty Easter chocolate company's bunny, and it was the solid kind anyhow, so I declined that as I'm not a huge fan of their chocolate. Fortunately i was able to locate some mini-Cadbury chocolate bunnies (yes, solid). Cadbury is a company that knows a thing or two about chocolate and this went well! At the grocery store itself, the lady whose been either flirting or engaging me in conversation for the last several times did so again. Again I failed to pull the trigger and get her number/email address/Facebook, which would be trivially easy. I'm still not over the remnants of "relationship thinking" and sitting on my hands when I really shouldn't. So taking the action I know I should take on this score has been a hit or miss thing. And now I'll sit down, enjoy a good meal, and give thanks for the capitalist commercial system that makes all this possible. I think I'll put on some more Bob Dylan.

But Dylan was pretty out front about his beliefs....There are some famous bootlegs from his live shows during the later 70's and early 80's where he was really a "fire and brimstone" kinda guy...even castigating his audiences for being insufficiently devout. There is a relatively recent interview that he did on 60 minutes (sometime in the last 5 or 6 years i think) where he talked openly and genuinely about his faith. So I don't think he does it merely as an artistic device...I think its something that is pretty important to him.

They talk of Chesty Puller but have not built his role enough. He was the major reason for the victory south and west of Bloody Ridge. Basilone got the Medal of Honor there ,and Puller's 7th Regiment had up to three times the allotted quota of machine guns. Puller got his third of five Navy crosses that he received during his service. The mortars and artillery went through a dump and a half of ammunition that night also. Puller borrowed Army troops to reinforce his positions. Without Puller's experience, they would have been overun and control of Henderson field would have been lost.

Puller won Navy Crosses in Haiti, Nicaraugua, Guadalcanal, Peluliu, and Inchon. That's your second highest ranking medal. Why he never was awarded a Medal of Honor, I'll never know. The Pavuvu(Peluliu) campaign is upcoming and Puller should be highlighted, i hope.

I think that a lot of Dylan's songs would lose a significant part of their power, their "bite", if the vocalist were a choir boy instead of a snarling, nasally guy. 96 To take the ^ comment further: Take Dylan's song "Idiot Wind". There is no way McCartney improves that song. Dylan owns it. Ironically, since I've thrown the Beatles into the mix, Lennon could've covered it too. Why? Because vocally Lennon had some similarities with Dylan. I could totally hear Dylan singing "Working Class Hero"....but no way could I buy Dylan singing McCartney's "Listen to What the Man Says" or "Maybe I'm Amazed". It's not a slam against either guy. I like them both.

I recommend his autobiography, it is awesome. The audiobook is even more awesome because you get to hear Sean Penn misspronounce words ( he pronounces the "Juan" in Don Juan as "Jew-on").

105 MiT, I love the Rolling Thunder Stuff! I'm a big fan of the Blood on the Tracks/Planet Waves/Desire stuff, so that period works for me. One of his Genuine Bootleg Series is Called "Live '75"...I really like that CD...there is an "unofficial release" called "Hold The Fort for All It's Worth" (A Rolling Thunder Concert from a 1976 gig at Fort Worth, Texas I believe) that is also terrific. "Live '66" is another set in the "officially released bootleg" series, and it's great...features the British tour with the Band (then known as the Hawks). It features the legendary "PLay Fucking Loud" performance of "Like a Rolling Stone".

106 MiT, Oh...and stay far, far away from the "Dylan and the Dead" live album......that's really pretty awful. The Grateful Dead did release an album of live Dylan covers, though, called "Postcards of the Hangings". That's pretty good, if you like the Dead.

107 I've heard the infamous "play it fucking loud" bootleg and will check out the others you reccomend. I think the Blood on the Tracks album is his best. Shelter from the Storm really resonates with me for some reason. That being said, Highway 61 is awfully powerful to. Any insight to the "water / storm" imagery around the names for some of the live albums? (Budakan(?sp) being an exception. His performance on The Last Waltz was top notch as well. I guess he woke them up after Neil Diamond!

108 I really don't know if there is significance to the water/storm stuff and the titles of the live albums. There was "before the flood" with the Band in 1974, and "hard rain" in 1976, but off the top of my head i think those are the only two "watery" titled live albums. There is a bootleg called "After the Flood" of the concert with the Band. I think the sound quallity on it is pretty poor though.

111 Oh, and MiT, since you like Blood on the Tracks... There is a great bootleg (I think it's called "The New York Sessions") that features the original versions of the songs for that album. Basically...Dylan recorded the tracks and took it home and played it for his brother. His brother convinced him to re-record about half of the songs. So Dylan recut them and ended up with the versions that made it on the final album.

Before the Flood, my bad, It's Alright Ma is powerful, especially when he gets to the line about "even the President of the United State sometimes must stand naked" I think Nixon was about to resign when they recorded the album. The crowd roars. As a side note, ever think about doing a post on great covers? One of my favorite things to look for / listen to are cover songs.

I used to like Bob Dylan peripherally, but somehow started watching some documentaries about him and even read his autobiography, and I am just so impressed with his character. Now I genuinely love him and wish nothing but good things for him.

There is a particularly good You Tube clip of him partying in a hotel room with a bunch of hippies including Donovan in London, and someone gets crazy and throws a bottle onto the sidewalk, and he goes off on the people for behaving so poorly. You can tell even then he had morals and integrity.

And Blood on the Tracks is is best album in my view.

As for his conversion, that was such an interesting time. The guy who converted him was Keith Green, a Jesus "freak" (not meant pejoratively, just part of that movement), who genuinely loved God and sought a genuine walk with Him. There were quite a few fundamental type believers back in the day. There were a lot of us who believed that way, but as time went on, it became more about just the love of God - living by the spirit and not the law. I think that is what happened to Bob - in the beginning, you walk in the law, but God apprehends your heart, and loving God just becomes part of who you are, and you are changed from the inside out in a very profound way. This is how I see the mellowing of Bob.
