A Wonderful Man
— LauraW

A Worthy Cause

**Please excuse this pure bleg. I tend to frown on this sort of thing when other people do it. If Ace wants to delete this, I understand completely.**

David Heim is a disabled man who runs a non-profit business, The Wheelchair Recycler, that provides motorized wheelchairs to needy people.

Very often these folks have been refused a wheelchair by Medicare, even though they are incapable of walking or standing on their own.
He has provided independence and indoor and outdoor mobility for hundreds of people in the US and around the world who otherwise would be stuck in a bed the rest of their lives or sitting waiting for someone to give them a push.

David has given this extremely costly equipment to these folks for FREE or for a pittance. He has sent FREE wheelchairs worth tens of thousands of dollars to the VA hospital when even the VA would not or could not provide them to some of our disabled vets.

His little shop even customizes wheelchairs with big round tires for traversing the beach, snow plows, or tank-like treads for folks who like to take rugged outdoor jaunts.

David has a soft spot for the plight of disabled children, and will redesign small wheelchairs for their needs and even put nifty touches on them, like special seats, paint jobs, cute backpacks and bike horns.

He does all this with funds he can generate through the wheelchair donation process and through monetary donations. When Christopher Reeves' widow donated her late husband's wheelchair to David, he used it to improve the lives of six other people with refurbished wheelchairs. I know you'd rather the Federal Government take over providing all forms of health care, but you just don't get this kind of passion and efficiency with government-run 'charity' (snort).

David has recently had some health difficulties and is now in the uncomfortable position of needing help himself in order to continue his mission.

Please.

That's all I got to say.

I don't understand.

Why does Medicare deny wheelchairs to disabled people when they clearly need them?  I thought Medicare was the end-all, be-all healthcare solution that provides for everyone.

Not snarking.  Genuinely curious.

Same reason Medicare denies your children coverage because you "make too much money" even though you're drawing unemployment and can't afford health insurance or a visit to the doctor.

12 Medicare refuses tons of needy people care in every way you can imagine.

My understanding is that if you can take a few steps or if you can stand- even if it's only to hold yourself up for a minute or two, you are not eligible. Obviously that's not the same thing as what most of us consider essential mobility.

Anyone else may correct me if I am wrong.

21

So let me get this straight...

Medicare will deny a disabled person a wheelchair if they can barely make the effort to stand up or take a few laboured steps?  Does that really count against their claim?

Is Medicare worse than a private health insurance company in terms of denial or services?

Posted by: EC at May 14, 2010 08:45 AM (mAhn3)

22 If you need a wheelchair, buy one. Why should the government pick my pocket to give you anything?

Yes, we can debate whether there should be social programs, but the fact is there is one, and its supposed to be there to help the truly needy, so they are already picking your pocket to fund salaries of govt workers so they can deny proper claims and give that graft to cronies.

23 Old Tom, these are not light scooters for people who can easily get in and out of them.

Dave deals in chairs in the 10K+ range. The kind made for people who are profoundly weakened or incapacitated.

He customizes those chairs for quadraplegics who need a chin-steer setup and rotating/ reclining seats, for example.

Come down to Atlanta, where half the black people in their early 40's scoot around in motorized wheelchairs in between the bus stops that are only about 40 feet apart (I kid you not) because they weigh 400 lbs.  You'd be surprised what Medicair will provide you when you vote the right way.

Anyway, donation done, lauraw.  Thanks for the post.

28 And lauraw, I'm pretty sure the V.A. is not refusing to provide that level of equipment for our combat disabled vets. I have less compassion, however, towards some guy who served in 'Nam 40 years ago, came home physically healthy, has since blimped up to 400 pounds and lost his legs due to complications from chronic alchoholism and untreated diabetes. Of course, there's always PTSD to blame...

33  Medicare denies more claims than any private health insurance company. FAR more.

That's because Medicaid supplies durable medical equipment to means-tested consumers. Why is Medicare restricted in this area of purchasing? Because Republicans demanded that people with means who receive Medicare ought to pay. So, this is why people who suffer mobility disabilities prove indigency in order to enroll in Medicaid.

Thanks, Republicans!

Posted by: maddogg at May 14, 2010 09:01 AM (OlN4e)

42 Nope, doesn't make you wrong.  Just remember, though, everyone's situation is different.  For every 10 fatasses you see on a hoveround, paid for by Uncle Sam, there are another 10 that genuinely can't get around, for reasons other than an affinity for cheez doodles and Pepsi.  And some of them don't have anything close to the money needed for a state-of-the-art motorized wheelchair.  Hell, they don't have the $149.71 for the one from Amazon - I'm not suggesting that you're wrong, but I DO think the Medicare/Medicaid program does a lousy job of prioritizing.

Posted by: antisocialist at May 14, 2010 09:01 AM (Rwudm)

43 Is Medicare worse than a private health insurance company in terms of denial or services?

Oh hell yes.  Hell.  Yes.  See, at least with private health insurance companies, there's always the threat of a lawsuit if the company doesn't pay under the terms of the policy.  Filing suit tends to sharpen the minds of the insurance company very quickly.  You can't sue Medicare for not making that payment.  So no matter how idiotic the denial is, there's no recourse other than fighting with Medicare for years over getting it paid.

True story - a few years back we were helping a client get some bills paid.  Medicare was suddenly denying claims based on the client not being eligible for Medicare.  He was 97 years old.  After, no lie, being transferred to 17 different people over the space of three hours, I finally got someone to admit that there was a typo for his age.  A Kafkaesque discussion then ensued when I asked how this correction would be made.  It was simply unreal.  It took 7 different forms and three months to get a freaking typo changed.

Yeah, I hate Medicare with the passion of 10,000 burning suns.

You shouldn't feed trolls, they keep coming back for more.

It gives me a nice outlet for The Rage though.

88 If you need a wheelchair, buy one.

And now that we have HCR[sic], it's going to cost 2.3% more.  The kind, compassionate Democrats added an excise tax.

I bought a wheelchair at a garage sale years ago while I could still make it outside, so I don't actually need Medicare to help me. Foresight into my condition helped  me tons. However, I don't qualify for Medicare because I'm too young, plus my "condition" is one that Medicare makes it hard as hell to get approved for (MS). I found out about the "able to get outside' condition for approval when I tried to buy a motorized chair.

As for being a lazy ass who wants a "motorized" chair, MS makes me extremely weak in my arms, as well.

Fuck Medicare anyway. It's the good deeds of private citizens that this country needs.

SO Little Miss know-it-all-Laura W! What your trying to tell us is that caring for our neighbors is not the governments job?? Are you trying to tell me that compassion and charity start at home, in the church and in your own community? That big government is not the answer to all of our ills and that somehow right wing, gun toting, racist, bible thumpers are suddenly going to care about the plight of anyone but themselves??!!11!!111???

Surely you jest.

Oh, you'll learn.

You get durable equipment from Medicaid, if you are eligible.

93 For years my wife (Maybe the only conservative social worker on the planet) collected used handicap toilets, safety bars, walkers. etc. as they came available. (she worked in hospice) She and I parted out and refurbed 'em as they hit the garage, and passed 'em on to non-profits. I often met great folks in their homes while installing some of the equipment. We never did organize anything near as extensive as David Heims' operation, but every bit helps, plus there's no way to measure the warm fuzzies of pitching in. Best wishes to Mr. Heim, hope he carries on with much success.

95 Those who argue for single-payer insurance based on expansion of Medicare really ought to read about how claims for wheelchairs are handled, and how the process is set up to delay and deny as long as possible, and to intimidate or punish claims outside arbitrary cost-control guidelines. http://tiny.cc/t3dfm Suing won't be an option. Recourse in the state legislature won't be an option. Just think about it.

As the FEMA employee told my husband when they fucked us over after the '94 Northridge quake "Honey, we're the federal government. We can do whatever we want."  Exact quote.

I helped my mother through the Medicare process for 2 wheelchairs, one manual and then one electric, with no problems, even though the chairs were ordered only 2 months apart.  Scooter store handled all the paper work; I only needed to take her to her doctor for the recommendation/prescription.  She was approved quickly, maybe because her severe arthritis left them little wiggle room for denial.  After reading this thread I am beginning to think I just got really lucky.

While I'm at it, what's with this "age-ism" and social security/Medicare? Isn't that descrimination by definition?

If someone has worked for a bare minimum to qualify and receive social security benefits at retirement age, they still have it made in the shade with Medicare (like my aunt who quit work at 21).

I'm making an argument for government healthcare, it seems, but damn it, this is government-sanctioned discrimination!

My consistency-minded ways haunt me.

Hey peeps on a related topic The VA has a program called HISA that gives  a onetime 4500 grant to vets to install accessability options to your residence.ie widening doorways, ramps or accessable tub or shower gear. Your injury or limitaions don't need to be combat related and the really cool part is you can even be a RENTER! If you live in tyhe TriState area of NJ,PA or DEL call Todays Bath Systems at 856-503-8677 for installation issues

I'm a regular user posting under an alias because I don't want sympathy or flames (search my hash if you care enough) Besides I'm late to this thread and few will read this.

I had a serious accident while on active duty that left me a quad, similar to Christopher Reeve, though I can breathe on my own and have some arm movement.

The VA pays me for EVERYTHING!  Any hospital care, any equipment (including my motorized wheelchair) drugs, and I still get a VA pension.  Even after ALL that I still get some help from medicare because of my disabilty under SSDI if I ever need to buy something the VA doesn't carry. I turn down a lot of care because I feel guilty for all the help I get.

There is a TON of government help out there.

Our main concern is that the TON of government help is given to those who really need it; not the welfare pros who suck off the public teat and pass it on to their 15 kids like a fucking family heirloom.  We veterans paid for VA care through our service. I'm a retired Army NCO. I go to the VA now and then. Thankfully, I'm in good health.
