A Word From The King*
— Monty

I been downhearted baby
Ever since the day we met
I been downhearted baby
Ever since the day we met
You know our love is nothin' but the blues
Baby how blue can you get?

*That's Mr. B. B. King, not Aaron Copland as I first thought.

22 Monty, just curious.  My kid was taught some basic guitar (after studying piano) by a church youth pastor.  I'm amazed how he took it up much faster than piano.  Now he's playing in Okinawa at a few places with his best friend.

My question, because I grew up playing piano, why do you think he grasped guitar so easily?

31 My question, because I grew up playing piano, why do you think he grasped guitar so easily?......................I know you didn't ask me, but i had the same experience and the guitar was just easier to play, it didn't require much from the right hand (or left depending on which one you pick with), so it was easier to learn.

I love Gary Sinese!  My husband and I watch CSI NY (the only CSI we watch) weekly.  Every once in a while, I'll turn to my hubby and say (referring to Sinese), "Isn't it amazing how well he walks on his two prosthetic legs?"  It's unbelievable."  My husband doesn't think it's funny, but I crack myself up!

58 If you saw my music thread on Saturday, you'll know what a fan I am of one Joe Bonamassa. Here's a clip of him doing a great low-down blues number called "Sloe Gin". It's the kind of song they play at 2AM when the party is over, the air stinks of old cigarettes and stale perfume, and the bartender is just waiting for the last lonely drunks to leave before he closes the place up.

Posted by: Monty at September 28, 2010 05:07 PM (o2hlb)

If this type of reactor really works (nobody's built one), the claim is that the US is sitting on enough spent uranium to generate $100 trillion of electricity. 107 Hey, Delta.  I'll let you know!  D'oh said he'd love to go. I really, really hope we can do it.  By the way, for Marine Corps graduation, we stayed at the Best Western Inn, right on the bay.  Within walking distance to very nice restaurants.  And I'm not talking run of the mill.  Downtown is lovely, and everything cool is within walking distance.

110 Jesus Christ,

This is the lamest post ever. I thought this was supposed to be a smart military blog, or a conservative blog or something. This is possibly the best election cycle the conservative movement has or will ever see. What's up with the Blues?

Ps.  If anyone could tell me how to post it, I've got a great video of the Coon Man from Detroit. He tells how he cooks coons that he gets in Detroit. Barbecued and everything.  Then he grabs his guitar and sings the Blues for a while.  It's cool as hell.

114 gotta agree about the Hammond.. the Hammand B-3 and Leslie rotary defines much of Chicago blues..

I grew up listening to Paul Butterfield.. on records.. and live, these guys:

Siegal-Schwall band..

http://tinyurl.com/2f2el92

notably, Paul Butterfield used very little Hammond.. more Farfisa than anything..  I am equally in love with both sounds..

I'm not a big BB King fan..

115 In the focus group, there were many buying into the "we need time, have patience, buck up" narrative, willing, like most Americans, to give him a chance, a second chance and even a third.  Those who are awake, see how bad things really are.  But, the ones easily led, are well, easily led.

I thought we were going to see a rumble on there tonight.

116 Thanks. Have seen him 3-4 times over the years and during that time frame he was probably as good as it gets. Listen to how he sings the word, "Evvvvvvvvveer". Damn. After that sweet intro he just kicks yer ass w/ the vocals too.

Jesus Holy Mary Christ is anyone watching Hannity? This Luntz focus group is absolutely unhinged. Where in Hades do they get these people? I think every single person in that group said "change" at least once. And that old lady looked murderous.

Yuck - had to turn it off.  If I hear another one say "he inherited this mess" and we can't blame it all on one person (except if that perons is George W. Bush) etc. etc.  I will vomit.  AND if that woman had been clapping in my face I'm not sure how I would have reacted - with all the wine I've consumed tonight or not.

I think I know the place you're referring to.  I believe we actually stepped in the night before grad with my in-laws and various cousins, etc. who were all staying with us at the Best Western.

I remember we left for whatever reason, and ended up at a Mediterranean place a few doors up, where a dozen of us had awesome meals.

We live in Savannah, and as much as we love Beaufort, don't spend a lot of time there.

141 There were quite a few tunes in the twenties/thirties that everyone seemed to have a piece of. One was The Train that took my Girl from Town.

Another was White House Blues, here by Charlie Poole and the North Carolina Ramblers.

Posted by: flashbazzbo, s.e. at September 28, 2010 06:24 PM (x7MwC)

142 Blues on the Bayou was playing loudly in the wheelhouse so it would drown the sound of the waves crashing against the side of the cabin. The problem was the music was also drowning out the calls of the coast guard tring to contact us. We were unaware that the damn epirb had gone off and was sending a distress call to galveston. The Coast Guard Station had called my home and told my wife and child the boat had sunk and they could not locate us or the vessel. In between songs I heard the CG calling and I answered and told them everything was ok. By then my wife had people all over the world on the internet praying for us. The CG said they wanted to check us out so about fifteen minutes later the jet had left Galveston and was waving at us. The epirb was malfunctioning and we were all ok and on our way to the dock.  Later that night we did have a wave come through the wheelhouse window and destroyed all my electronics except the stereo playing BB King. I had to open the back door and let three foot of water out of the galley and the crew never even got out of their bunks.

Blind Willie Johnson John the Revelator

Posted by: flashbazzbo, s.e. at September 28, 2010 06:34 PM (x7MwC)

144 Help us Monty one kanoby, you're our only hope!

Asked in the ONT if anybody knew how to ascertain the value of antique books. Perhaps you have some idea? I may have a shot at a few dozen century old books plus an equal or larger number of 70 to 80 year olds.

Posted by: kidney at September 28, 2010 06:38 PM (ENRGu)

145 Blind Willie Johnson John the Revelator Love that one. My favorite is "Nobody's Fault But Mine", though. Chris Thomas King did a killer cover of it for Scorsese's "Blues" miniseries (a shitty documentary, I thought; I expected better). Chris King also did a superb jukejoint blues rave-up called "John Law Burned Down the Liquor Sto'" (can't find a good clip of it on YT for some reason).

Posted by: Monty at September 28, 2010 06:39 PM (o2hlb)

146 Asked in the ONT if anybody knew how to ascertain the value of antique books. Perhaps you have some idea? It depends on what kind of book it is. Is it a special book like a Bible or an old picture book or something? A novel? A book of poetry? Some old special-interest books are worth a lot: regimental histories, land-survey records, voting rolls, town charters, birth and death registries, stuff like that. But for most stuff, it has to be really old or really rare to be worth anything substantial. Remember: "old" is not the same as "rare" or "valuable". Most old books are just old -- they don't have any monetary value to speak of. You can get in touch with rare book appraisers through sites like AbeBooks (http://www.abebooks.com/books/RareBooks/appraisers.shtml), but it's generally not a free service, and the number they give you doesn't necessarily mean that's what you'll get if you put the book up for auction.

Posted by: Monty at September 28, 2010 06:46 PM (o2hlb)

147 Another thing you might try if you live in a bigger city is to contact an estate-sale agent and get his or her opinion. Those folks tend to have a very good sense of what things are worth because they deal with "antiques" all the time, and they generally have a pretty good sense of when something is truly valuable and when it's not. DO NOT go to an antiques dealer, because about 95% of the time, these people have no idea what something is worth (or if they do, they'll lie to you). They're used to selling overpriced shit to tourists, and they rarely get good high-dollar stuff in their inventory in the EBay age.

Posted by: Monty at September 28, 2010 06:50 PM (o2hlb)

148 I know that many old books are not worth much. I have a 100 year old Dracula that a little research indicates is only worth about 60 bucks.

I have a feeling that some of these may be of some real value. One appears to be nearly 200 hundred years old. Some others are illustrated which I understand could mean value if the right person did the illustration. I just thought I'd take a shot in the dark here and see if somebody knew of a method of appraisal that was practical.

Thanks for the Addy.

Posted by: kidney at September 28, 2010 06:53 PM (ENRGu)

149 Yeah, I would skip the dealers for an appraiser who would know I wasn't going to sell to him.

You would be interested in some of these. Can't remember all but some Kipling,  an illustrated Treasure Island. An illustrated (though in bad shape) Kabumpo by the other of the Wizard of Oz. A Presbyterian book of morals that consists of a story about a girl who can't control her tongue etc.

Posted by: kidney at September 28, 2010 06:57 PM (ENRGu)

150 kidney: I'd say that an appraisal agent via AbeBooks is probably your best shot, if you have books that are truly old and/or rare. I'm not sure how much the appraisers charge, but it's not a huge amount -- but it will cost you money to insure and ship them, of course. And then you have to decide how to auction the books off -- your appraiser might be willing to help with this as well, for a cut of the proceeds. Good luck!

153 Monty,
I think that docu also had him doing "Soul of a Man" as Blind Willie.
Yeah, crappy documentary for such a great subject.

The version of John Law burned down the Liquor store you are likely thinking of is found on the live Down from the Mouontain concert, featuring the Oh Brother cast. I can scan it into an MP3 if you like. (email at topmaker"at"ymail"dot"com)

It was a great show, except in having poor John Hartford having to sing the Burl Ives version of Candy Mountain, rather than the hobo lyrics.
