Ritz Mock Apple Pie

The classic pie, featuring Ritz crackers baked in a golden crust,
is perfect for the holidays.

Pastry for two-crust 9-inch pie
36 RITZ Crackers, coarsely broken (about 1 3/4 cups crumbs)
1 3/4 cups water
2 cups sugar
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
2 tablespoons lemon juice
Grated peel of one lemon
2 tablespoons margarine or butter
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon


1. Roll out half the pastry and line a 9-inch pie plate. Place
cracker crumbs in prepared crust; set aside.

2. Heat water, sugar and cream of tartar to a boil in saucepan
over high heat; simmer for 15 minutes. Add lemon juice and peel;
cool.

3. Pour syrup over cracker crumbs. Dot with margarine or butter;
sprinkle with cinnamon. Roll out remaining pastry; place over pie.
Trim, seal and flute edges. Slit top crust to allow steam to escape.

4. Bake at 425 F for 30 to 35 minutes or until crust is crisp
and golden. Cool completely.

Makes 10 servings

3 g saturated fat, 339 mg sodium, 0 g dietary fiber.

I've never read anything that indicates he knows anything about cooking.  A lot of our morons are great chefs and/or know their way around meat (game meat, you pervs!).  My recollection is that garrett is a chef and several of the other morons and moronettes know a lot about food.

I'm a little out of it because of my cold and just read the article quickly, but it sounds a bit like the Medical Research Council (MRC) system in the UK or maybe the CNRS in France.  At the MRC the labs are formed into groups (say a structural biology group) and they are reviewed as a unit on a regular cycle (4-6 years, I can't recall).  Each lab gets a score but the whole group gets a score as well, so there is actually reason for the group as a whole to care about the individual labs' success/failure.  If they get renewed, their lab receives some base funding such as the professor's salary and a technician and some supplies.  (The part of the article referencing one tech, x number of postdocs, etc, reminded me of that.  Trouble with that is that some fields do not lend themselves to that model.  In structural biology, you usually have some technical folks on the equipment and some programmers -- those are often "permanent" positions because students and postdocs are unreliable.) 

The interdependence of lab groups in the MRC system is one thing I'd love to see adapted here somehow -- in the U.S. your fellow faculty colleagues exist as potential collaborators or as people who will lift the teaching or committee load off of you.  In my experience, if you are not the former (a collaborator) you get dumped on with the latter, which doesn't help productivity.

Anyway, here's the thing.  I don't think that the broken thing in U.S. life sciences in the competition for funding, exactly.  It makes people come up with a plan, which is a good thing, and pushes folks to get their results written up and published, also good.  In fact, after working with a lot of international collaborators over the years and sitting on grant panels, I think our system is better.  Our system allows young investigators to pop up out of virtually nowhere and make big discoveries and make names for themselves.  The European system is much more hierarchical and based on people being well-connected to rise to independence and prominence.  I had many friends who were stuck below "Herr Doctor Professor" or the equivalent with no prospects of rising to the top. 

The problem here is that most (science) faculty are not really mentored in the art and science of grant-getting or budgeting or management, nor are most (basic science) faculty encouraged to find other sorts of funding aside from NIH or perhaps NSF grants.  I had many junior faculty colleagues who foolishly pursed NIH to the exclusion of other funding sources.  The other problem is that "the rich get richer" to some extent, especially on NIH grants.  In some ways that makes sense - the best-equipped labs can do some of the best experiments - but in other ways it creates a stagnation of ideas. 

So if I were to address one thing I'd probably reduce how many NIH grants (or dollars) any one lab can have and I would shift some of the NIH budget over to NSF which is more interested in basic research across the sciences, not just in life science, and which has as part of its mission integrating research and teaching so that the quality of education improves and our grad school and postdoc pool improves along with it.
