Adam Carolla: Liberal Nitwit
— Ace

No, not really. Pretty much the opposite.

Language Warning. The ranting starts at 6:15 or so and just keeps on going until around 32:00.

Clarification: The podcast you want is "Adam Carolla and You." It's a screwed up menu thing because when you click on that, it starts the OK Go show, which isn't the one you want. Click down the list on the window that opens for "Adam Carolla and You."

Thanks to steve_in_hb.

Kind of Funny: Late in the podcast, starting at 51:25, he starts pitching his movie. It's one of those "Character Goes Blind and Gets Eye Transplant From Other Person Whose Memories Start Becoming the Character's." He calls it Gay Eye, and the idea is that a straight guy gets eye transplants from a gay guy and his eyes keep focusing on dude's dicks.

It's stupidly funny. I think the funny part for me is his apparent genuine belief it's a good idea for a movie. (He's faking that, I'm sure, but he sells his belief in his "project.")

12 I haven't listened to that podcast yet, but if it's anything like his other ones, it'll be incredible.  He did a podcast with Roger L. Simon a few days back and completely destroyed a bunch of California Democrats.

Seeing as how California has been the testing ground for every liberal idea from the 1960's and the state is currently a disaster, it's sort of amazing that more celebrities haven't connected the dots.  Then again, that's why Carolla talks for a living and guys like Sean Penn just read the words that are written for them.

14 Haven't heard this yet but Adam is, at least by Hollywood standards, very conservative. His podcast is often very good and I would recommend that people subscribe to it. It's rare to have a Hollywood guy willing to voice non-PC opinions.

Get it on!

18 Well, look.  I've been listening to Carolla for years, including his podcast.  I haven't yet heard this particular one, but unless it's somehow the equivalent of a born-again moment, color me skeptical.

Yeah, he throws off a good rant once in awhile, but he really is a dummy, one of those nitwits who gets the most exorcised over social con boogeymen.

He was an Obama voter in '08, and he'll probably still be one in '12, because the biggest problem, as far as he's been concerned, has been the social cons.

He's the epitome of that guy who cannot see what the Left is already doing because he's too worked up imagining what the Right might do.

19 I listen to Adam all the time.  He's more of a libertarian in his beliefs, I would say.  Especially in the area of drugs and few others.  I like that he's non-PC and not afraid to speak his mind in Hollywood.

29 Yeah I may subscribe to this.  It is pretty good.  He says fuck too much, but he is funny.

Right now I listen to Levin, but while the content is good on Levin's show, the Levin attitude really grates on me.  If he isn't whinging about Glenn Beck or going on about how he thought about it first and everybody just copies him, then he is engaging in that Levin humor which is roughly the same as you would find in a slightly retarded four-year-old child.  I frequently wonder why the hell I listen to the douche.  So maybe Corolla will get the spot.

Posted by: doug at April 01, 2010 10:56 AM (jCwj+)

30 Okay, so having heard the whole rant, it's really good, but I stand by what I posted before:  Carolla still thinks we (conservatives, and in particular social cons) are the bigger problem, and he's a nitwit for that.

He and his buddy Dr. Drew are Obama zombies.  Carolla's just too dumb, or too cowardly, to notice or acknowledge how conservative he really is, presumably because of the circles he travels in.

Posted by: Kensington at April 01, 2010 10:57 AM (aDdAT)

31 So if you're considering subscribing to his podcast, just understand that he throws anti-conservative sucker punches our way on a regular basis that are so ignorant it will make your head spin.

Posted by: Kensington at April 01, 2010 10:59 AM (aDdAT)

32 Well, I am not a conservative, although I do react negatively sometimes to stupid criticisms of conservatives.  But if he really is an Obama guy, then maybe he's not going to work out either.

(c), though it can make me laugh.

Anyway, my real point is that Norm McDonald is fairly conservative, too--certainly by Hollywood standards.  Dennis Miller has him on periodically, and McDonald copped to being pro-life, which is the next best thing to the kiss of death in the entertainment world.

He's the epitome of that guy who cannot see what the Left is already doing because he's too worked up imagining what the Right might do.

I'm stealing that because it describes so many people I know.

Kinda like a lefty athiest I used to be friends with who was always going on about Christians forcing their values on him.

I said, "Almost every one of your friends is a Christian, yet you're the one who always has to bring up religion and argue about it. Have any of them ever tried to drag you to church or make you pay for their causes the way your side demands I pay for theirs?"

Then it was all blah blah blah, Christians are anti-science and other such ignorant nonsense.

Then the guy lost his job and pretty much imploded. All his mean ol', judgemental, anti-science Christian friends did everything they could to help him, but he was more interested in feeling sorry for himself and blaming the world for his problems.

Today he's pretty much alone and friendless, which is exactly where he deserves to be in life for insulting and disrespecting the people who cared most about him.

50 Kensington, have you ever actually listened to Carolla? He's got an eclectic mix of opinions and he's probably closer to libertarian than anything else. To the extent that libertarians don't like social conservative laws about personal behavior, yeah, he bumps them. As for him taking shots at social con boogeymen, please cite an example, as he actually tends to fall for boogeymen invented by the social cons, such as immigration, rather than bashing them. As for being an "Obama guy," he didn't vote in the last election and he told people not to vote, as he said that whoever the President is has practically no effect on people's lives. In that respect, he's taking the libertarian line that govt is mostly an annoying distraction. rdbrewer, Kimmel took Maher's late night spot after Politically Incorrect got canceled because of his politically incorrect line about the terrorists being braver than the US army. Adam thinks Maher is still mad at Kimmel for taking his time slot after he got canceled. AndrewsDad, Kimmel is a workaholic like Leno who will obsess over his show and has had the best late show basically ever since he started. Look at how he easily demolished Leno on the fly. Adam's more of a rambler who's more suited for audio interviews, where he can display his unmatched lightning-quick wit. Nobody who knows comedy thinks the late night hosts are the funniest guys out there, but the guys who are funnier tend to be the kind of guys who don't want a 9 to 5, let alone an 8 to 7.

Posted by: sprewell at April 01, 2010 01:12 PM (tbpgM)

51 Ok, I listened to the rant. Very funny. Very non-PC. Lots of cursing. Lots of referring to stupid "homo lefties" or describing the left as "faggoty". The rant is basically -- LA is turning into Tijuana and nobody will say a goddamn thing about it. Corolla is from LA, so it's personal as he sees his hometown being turned into a 3rd world craphole and anybody who points that out gets called a racist. And the rich white liberal elite won't even answer the question of why they spend $20k a year to send their 12 year old to "Fudgepacker Academy of Brentwood" instead of the free school 4 blocks down the road that is 90% Mexican.

The quotes are direct from the podcast. I admit to laughing at Fudgepacker Academy of Brentwood.

52

I'm a regular Carolla listener, and he's not an Obama zombie. He's surrounded by predictable liberals like Dr. Drew and Jimmy Kimmel, but he's very much his own man, and frequently chides "all my liberal friends" about things like immigration, government regulation, fighting terrorism, the Patriot Act, torture complaints, etc.

He's no conservative either. He's very much in favor of legalizing pot, he's an atheist who thinks religion as silly and views social conservatives as clownish prudes. It's hard to classify him. He's generally an Instapundit-style libertarian; he wants government out of most of his life, but he's fine with a strong government when it comes to national security.

To say he regularly throws sucker punches our way really isn't true. If you look at his message boards, you'll often find liberal listeners complaining more about his conservative rants than the other way around.

Posted by: Dennis at April 01, 2010 01:22 PM (952/e)

53 No, sprewell.  I've never actually listened to him.  That's why I said in my first post that I've been listening to him for years.

And whether or not he actually voted for Obama, I've got recordings of appearances he made on Loveline right after the election and around the inaugeration, during which both he and Dr. Drew were ecstatic about the new Hopenchange Utopia, mainly because the conservatives had been knocked out of power, which they both thought was just great.

And if you want examples, just listen to any of his podcasts when he has liberal guests.  He sits there and lets douchebags like Richard Belzer and Seth MacFarlane rant on and on about rightwingers and never says a word.

For another example, last year he at least twice handed over entire shows to stand-up comics posing as Republican politicans and spent the entire show running through one lamebrained conservative-bashing gag after another.

Mind you, I'm not saying the guy isn't funny.  I just wanted to point out that he's often a total dick to conservatives, even though he sometimes does rants that we can enjoy, too.

By the way Ace, the "Gay Eye" thing is part of a running bit he's done over the years on made-up movies. He makes up movie plots based on all the ridiculous Hollywood cliches. He doesn't really think it would be a good movie, other than as something he could have fun with (like when he makes fun of "Roadhouse" or "Point Break").

Of course, one of Carolla's nicknames is Ace. I'm not sure this town's big enough for two Aces.

56 I think Manshow is a pretty cool guy. eh bases his political decisions on his own personal beliefs and doesn't afraid of anything.

Posted by: Schaefermeister at April 01, 2010 01:40 PM (I3PNd)

57 Kensington, perhaps you played his work, but it doesn't sound like you listened to it, hence your mistake about saying he voted for Obama. As for his appearances on Loveline, I'm a big fan of Adam's and have years of mp3s of that show on my hard drive, there was no such hoopla about Obama by Drew or Adam. If anything, Adam kept repeating the point that the liberals would be disappointed because Obama wouldn't change shit. Drew is pretty much a closet conservative, he would always try to dissuade abortion and push adoption on that show and Adam would always refer to Drew's non-lefty opinions that he was too scared to voice. I agree that Adam doesn't stand up to lefty guests on his show but he's a host, so he stays away from starting big political arguments with them. I wouldn't characterize the Belzer or MacFarlane appearances as ranting, you seem overly sensitive to even a few barbs. As for having Dick Martin, Republican Congressman from the great state of Ohio on, that guy's very funny and was a great podcast. Adam's not doing a "conservative podcast," he's doing a show for everyone and voices his sometimes conservative views. If you want a conservative podcast where every liberal barb is challenged, you obviously came to the wrong place.

Posted by: sprewell at April 01, 2010 01:44 PM (tbpgM)

58

"And if you want examples, just listen to any of his podcasts when he has liberal guests.  He sits there and lets douchebags like Richard Belzer and Seth MacFarlane rant on and on about rightwingers and never says a word."

Kensington, that's true. But I'd say that's because he's not especially confrontational in person. You might say that's cowardly, and perhaps it is a bit, but he's never pretended to be anything but a comedian. He had Roger Simon on the other day, and I'm sure liberal listeners were angry he didn't challenge Simon.

He's not a conservative, so I hardly expect him to be the righteous defender of "our side." But you're not going to find too many people in Hollywood willing to say outright that Saddam Hussein deserved to be killed, the death penalty is the right way to go or that all the whining about the Patriot Act ignores all the far more frequent government intrusions into our lives. Carolla does.

60 He often lets his uber liberal guests make statements that are either outright lies or misleading. My opinion is that he lets those statements go because he's not a politician and i imagine he does not want every one of his shows to devolve into a political fight. It would be very hard for him to get guests if he were to argue with everyone of them over political issues.

He had a very good interview with Seth Mcfarlane  about 9-11 which, even though Seth is a leftist, did not devolve into an argument. FWIW Seth missed his flight the morning of 9-11, I think it was the flight that ended up crashing into one of the towers. Interesting interview.
