Adult Stem Cells, Not Embryonic, Yielding Real Therapies
— Ace

I would not have guessed this -- not because I knew anything about the science either way, but because I think the universe usually avoids making questions easy for you, you know? It seemed unlikely to me that a big moral dilemma would turn out to be no dilemma at all, because adult stem cells were where the action was at.

But that's the case.

For all the emotional debate that began about a decade ago on allowing the use of embryonic stem cells, it's adult stem cells that are in human testing today. An extensive review of stem cell projects and interviews with two dozen experts reveal a wide range of potential treatments.

Morley Safer reported for "60 Minutes" this summer on the rapidly increasing trend of "regenerative medicine," where cells in the human body are manipulated into regrowing damaged tissues.

Researchers have created beating hearts, ears and bladders using stem cells. Biotech companies and the Pentagon have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in research that could profoundly change millions of lives.

Adult stem cells are being studied in people who suffer from multiple sclerosis, heart attacks and diabetes. Some early results suggest stem cells can help some patients avoid leg amputation. Recently, researchers reported that they restored vision to patients whose eyes were damaged by chemicals.

Apart from these efforts, transplants of adult stem cells have become a standard lifesaving therapy for perhaps hundreds of thousands of people with leukemia, lymphoma and other blood diseases.

"That's really one of the great success stories of stem cell biology that gives us all hope," says Dr. David Scadden of Harvard, who notes stem cells are also used to grow skin grafts.

"If we can recreate that success in other tissues, what can we possibly imagine for other people?"

That sort of promise has long been held out for embryonic stem cells...

But in the near term, embryonic stem cells are more likely to pay off as lab tools, for learning about the roots of disease and screening potential drugs.

12 I predicted this several years ago.. not because I have any deep knowledge about the subject, but just because it makes sense.

While I disagreed with Bush's ban on using existing embryos, I felt at the time it would probably end up being a boon to science because it would force them to use adult stem cells.

The problem with embryonic stem cells is that they still contain the DNA of the original person.  There is still the matter of rejection to deal with, if and when they found a use for them in transplants, etc.

If adult stem cells from the person needing therapy can be used, that problem goes away.

So.. this is very good news.

16 Its been that way for a while, of course I only knew it when I found out that adults have new stem cells.  It seems obvious that creating things, hearts, lungs, etc, would always be better if it came from yourself, at least in regards to rejection and donor problems.  Spinal cord cells are going to be the difficult ones, but also the holy grail.

19 Hasn't it been common knowledge for the better part of a decade that adult stem cells can be manipulated in a controlled fashion, while the fetal variety are too dynamic?  Yet, where does the government money go?  Fetal.

And it's not the first occurrence of AGWism in this area.  Remember fetal cell transplants for Parkinson's and the horror that turned out to be?

Any excuse to justify abortion on demand is acceptable to liberals, even if it starves money from real cures for real people.

nothing can "cure" diseases that are genetic in nature ...  if the body breaks down you can "fix" some of the breakage but eventually the body breaks the fixed cells again ...

Diabeties is a prime example ...  type 1 is an auto immune response ...  i.e. the body is attacking the pancreas ....  (yes there are a tiny percentage of type 1's from external causes)

you may be able to grow another pancreas via stem cells with your genetic code and avoid rejection ...  the body will most likely kill it as well ...  (at least kill the insulin producing cells ...)

magic bullets are too good to be true ...

27 The Bush "ban" (as I understand it) was really just a ban on federal funding for the CREATION of any new embryonic stem cell lines. Once those lines were created, federal funding could then be used for their study.

So an easy workaround to the ban would be to obtain federal funding to fertilize embryos, destroy them to harvest the stem cells, and then get federal funding to run your actual tests/studies.

However, the dirty little secret is that anyone who has any kind of money to invest in stem cells is doing it on the adult side, because as the scoreboard currently stands for viable medical procedures/cures/treatments:

Adult Stem Cells: 2,482
Embryonic Stem Cells: 0

60 quick thought dump
1/This was expected by many, even before the controversy before the 04 election. As stated above, fetal cells are too raw and tend to turn into cancer

2/ I strongly believe, but no one can prove, that this was only made a major issue because it worked against the Republicans. The dems knew it polled well and justified their pro-baby-murder policies, and more important it made the R's look like backward zealots in opposing the use of fetal cells. This was a manufactured issue to back the R's into a corner.

3/ I have seen reported many times in the past years the success of stem cell research without ever mentioning that it is the adult cells that are providing results.

This is pretty old news.  It is one reason why Michael J Fox and Christopher Reeves' wife were known jackasses (to those who knew the tuth) when stumping for embryonic stem cell research.  None of these people mentioned adult stem cells and the progress made in that area.  It was and is all a sham on their part in a crusade to make embryonic stem cells the be all and end all of medical research.  When they started their stumping, my family and I were outraged that they couldn't even tell the funking truth.  And using + exaggerating MJF's disease to perpetrate this myth is despicable.  It does a disservice to others who are struggling with Parkinson's.

I was reading the debate about embrionic stem cells being used and how they are gathered from abortions. At least a good amount are. I also was reading the amount of abortions done in the United States and I realized there is a basic flaw with the idea of embrionic stem cells gathered from abortions. When people get sick, and need blood or an organ or anything, they need to have a near perfect match with whatever donor is giving the patient something. This simple understanding that we have had in medicine has been "common sense" since the dawn of the modern medical age. Thats why adult stem cells are so valuable. You're a perfect match for yourself, everytime. Now, with embrionic stem cells taken from abortions(which is the big debate anyways), you simply have to look at who gets abortions. Not to be a racist, but blacks make up 11% of our population but have more than 35% of abortions, the majority of the elderly are white or half white people. There are hundreds of diseases and littereally millions of DNA strands that are different just because of skin difference, and although most transfusions such as a heart transplant is perfectly safe from a black donor to a white patient, I have never had much faith in say a black donor's stem cells regrowing a white person's blue eyes or blonde hair. Or a black person's risk of sickle cell being completely regrow(going against natural evolution) and forcing it to never have that problem with a seinor. Or a white person who is much more likely to develop parkinsons be able to donate to a person who simply can't accept it. Adult stem cells should be the only thought of how to move forward, the records and the added safty from knowing the entire structure of the donor(the patient) is proof that any other stance is not done in the name of science, safety, or for the chance of a longer and healthier life.

220 This sort of makes sense.  Fetal stem cells represent stem cells at the beginning of development, the undifferentiated of the undifferentiated.  Adult stem cells, on the other hand, have gone through the "growing up" process and more closely represent potential functional tissue albeit undifferentiated.

There were indications of this years ago when the "stem cell" debate was raging and the technology eventually made extracting and duplicating adult stem cells considerably more efficient than harvesting at an abortion clinic.  I find it difficult to believe some of the proponents of harvesting "fetal stem cells" didn't know this.

You don't suppose they were hiding another agenda behind all their care and concern, do you?

Anyone here ever read The Great Starvation Experiment by Ancel Keyes (yes, THAT guy - this was before he went on his low-fat kick)?  Apparently some CI's volunteered to be guinea pigs on the effects of starvation on the human body.  It was initially done to figure out the best way to re-feed the massive numbers of starving people after WWII without killing them with kindness.

REALLY interesting results - you can see similar effects with today's dieters.  Dr. Keyes and his associates really wrestled with their consciences, because they didn't realize how early starvation takes a toll on the human body and the mind.  These men were "starved" on 1500 calories a day for a couple of months, which was significantly more food than a lot of Europeans had been getting for a much longer period of time.

And maybe it's just me, but if Big Brother makes us all cut calories to extend our lives, doesn't that defeat the purpose of Dr. Berwick's "fantasy"?  I mean, after all, everyone knows that the largest amount of money is spent on the oldest people, right?

Why not just let us all gorge to our hearts' content, and we'll all die fat and happy?  I'd be willing to bet we'd all be healthier and live longer to boot......

No not really, cancer treatment was never a goal. But we have found a lot of nifty ways to cause cancer with embryonic stem cells!

In actuality stem cell research has to do with replacing injured or destroyed tissue not fighting errant uncontrollably growing tissue. As with most trolls. Your grade for reciting talking points A+ actually understanding the science FAIL.

240 1) embryonic stem cells are "pluripotent," which means one cell can become many types of tissue - muscle, organ, brain, etc. Adult stem cells are already differentiated, i.e. they're already set to be muscle, or organ, or brain, or whatever. In other words, you know what the cell is going to do, it isn't going to be a surprise party in your body.

Also, it turns out adult stem cells are a lot easier to get to than they thought - they used to extract them from marrow, now they've realized they're even more abundant in body fat, and not too hard to sort by type either. They can now extract cells from your fat, sort them, and re-inject them in volume while you're still on the table.

2) caloric restriction - actual international studies on diet seem to show that any benefits supposedly from low-calorie diets are overwhelmed by other factors, especially genetics.

3) Ancel Keyes was such a shit. He was behind the whole salt paranoia that's infected the medical industry - in a major international study where he ignored most of the data because it didn't support his conclusion. The Japanese eat more than four times as much salt and don't have higher CVD or blood pressure. Turns out hypertension, like so many other things supposedly caused by lifestyle, is genetic.

4) Bush didn't ban stem cell research, didn't steal the election, we recovered WMDs from Iraq, Republicans aren't anti-immigrant, price controls cause shortages, water is wet, and when we got to the North Pole, nobody was actually surprised that Santa wasn't waiting.

" It seemed unlikely to me that a big moral dilemma would turn out to be no dilemma at all, because adult stem cells were where the action was at."

Moral dilemmas become non-dilemmas pretty damn fast once you decide to do the right thing. Reprogramming existing cells is where the action is.

The whole embryonic stem cell thing was just insecure people trying to prove that they were more analytical and logical and unimpressed with ordinary morality, like a scene from a bad movie "And you call yourself a scientist!?!"

CELLPORT CLINIC YOKOHAMA provides breast augmentation surgery that utilizes the CAL soft tissue augmentation procedure. Adipose-Derived Cells (ADCs), which include adipose-derived stem cells, are extracted from adipose tissue that is obtained using liposuctioning the abdominal wall or thighs. The aspirated fat is known to be relatively stem cell-deficient compared to regular fat, so it is supplemented with ADCs before transplantation using aspirated fat as living scaffolds. The supplemented aspirated fat, which now contains a high concentration of stem cells, is injected little by little, layer to layer, into each breast in order to obtain diffuse distribution of transplanted fatty tissue.
This procedure will show dramatic results by increasing breast volume roughly equivalent to two bra-cup sizes (corresponds to 5.0 cm increase in breast circumference). The degree of breast enhancement is unprecedented using conventional lipoinjection procedures.
In addition, transplanted fat that survives in the breasts with a beautiful shape and the desired size will be maintained in each breast in the rest of your life with a normal aging change.
