Afternoon Opun Thred
— Gabriel Malor

I'm out for a while, so tawk amongst yaselves.

Some movie stuff to get ya buzzing is below the fold. The first action shot of Jason Momoa as Conan:

Still underwhelmed?

And the squee-tastic poster for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Yes, I'll be seeing all three films. (And I'm gonna enjoy 'em too.)

I'm taking 20 points more off for lack of consistency.

You don't sell 70 million damn books just cause you whipped out a cute kids story.  She's got some deep stuff in there, she only lets you experience it and doesn't tell you about it.

72 Rowling's HP books are kids' books like Pixar films are kids' films. The quality of her writing can't be denied. Her characters are 3D with flaws and quirks, humor and pathos. She created one of the greatest, complex character arcs I've ever seen (no, not Potter-- Snape). She has a terrific talent for name and word creation, a wicked sense of satire, and a knack for bawdy double-entendres (eg Blast-Ended Skrewts) that don't usually make it into the films. She belongs up there with C. S. Lewis and Tolkien.

You can ask me to hand over my man card but you ain't getting it.

Exactly. I can't even tell you how many times I've read the HP series. I remember having a discussion with one of my more "fundie Christian" friends who had never read the books because she had been told they were "evil" and about the occult. I put my English Major hat on and schooled her on how it's actually a Christian story -- Harry himself could arguably be just as much a Christ allegory as Aslan in the Narnia books. And if it's not a Christ tale, at the very least it's a morality tale. (The first time I ever read "Sorcerer's Stone" was in college right after it came out -- I wrote a paper for my Comparative Literature class about this very topic.)

Good vs. Evil. Choosing to do right over wrong. Loyalty. Honor. The hero has "special" or "supernatural" circumstances surrounding his birth or early life. Voldemort and snakes (even his appearance). And of course what happens to Harry at the every end of book 7.... I was VERY pleased to hear that my fundie friend actually reading the books for herself. Score one for thinking for yourself!

I remember reading a quote from Stephen King a ways back, after someone had asked him the difference between Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" and Jo Rowling's "Harry Potter." Basically he was like "Well, Jo Rowling is a genius, and Stephenie Meyer is a talentless hack." Nail, meet head. Meyer tries to inject intellectualism into her books (equating Edward and Bella to Cathy and Heathcliff or Romeo and Juliet) but J.K. Rowling does the real deal. One of my favorite parts of reading the HP books is picking up on all the Latin, Greek, and mythological references.

Phew - sorry for the, uh, novel. ;o) Time for me to go make some meatballs and spaghetti sauce.

78 6 "Why are they releasing HP7 in two parts?  Is it to better capture the spirit of the book or just bilk movie-goes for even more dough?"

When they announced the two-parter, the producers said it was because otherwise they'd have to cut too many great scenes. The only scene they mentioned specifically was the one where "Hermione is held in Malfoy Manor." That's the scene where Hermione is tortured by Bellatrix Lestrange.

What it boils down to is: they're making it in two parts so they can show Helena Bonham Carter and Emma Watson in a B&D scene.

That a good enough reason?

86 OK, I had to go check on the Conan movies after that exchange. Although true that Conan has been around for a long time in the Weird Tales venue, the Arnold movie WAS the first movie.

And it does seem like sacrilege to do a remake. That is until someone does a real kick-ass remake and then the new "icon" is born.

That is what happened to Robin Hood as there had been several movies out before the Errol Flynn version and there have been several out after. Right now the Flynn version is still the king.

93 Hopefully the Red Dawn remake has a trailer soon.

Now that one from what I have read has been truly PCized. All the shit that made the original good has been removed and multiculturalism added to replace it.

Jason Momoa might actually make a really good Conan.  I loved the first Arnie movie but the second one kinda sucked and he basically abandoned it after that.

I was reading Conan stories and buying the Savage Sword of Conan comics long before Arnie took it up so I don't really have that 'Arnie is the one true image of Conan' that other people have.  As a matter of fact, that picture of Momoa looks more like how I imagined Conan to look.

Just sayin is all...it'll be nice to have some new installments of Conan if he can do a good job of it.

I've read all the Harry Potter books and liked them but I wish she'd shut up in public...it's like she was channeling someone else and her muse has left and she turns out to be dumb as a stump.

That is what happened to Robin Hood as there had been several movies out before the Errol Flynn version and there have been several out after. Right now the Flynn version is still the king.

Are you kidding?...the Costner version is the new standard...it even has Alan Rickman who was excellent in his role.

Surely you jest.

No, I'm serious...I liked it...what was so bad about it?

Anyway, I agree that there were some real stinkers...the one with Sean Connery, 'Robin and Marion' where she poisons him at the end...that was some serious bad sh*t.

It wasn't that it was bad, it just wasn't good. Agreed on the Robin and Marion fiasco. That is probably the worst movie Sean Connery ever made. Even worse than wearing a diaper in Zardoz.

Yeah, it sucked but not  bad as Marion and Zardoz

102 Why, oh why couldn't we have seen that image of Hogwort's in flames during the FIRST film?

104 Open thread means I can post something not related to movies, right? Here is an article in Daily Kos that I actually like: Why Liberals Should Love the Second Amendment. http://tinyurl.com/35o5dmk This article points out, for example, how insanely inconsistent it is that liberals claim that all of the Amendments in the Bill of Rights are all individual rights -- except for the Second Amendment. How crazy to claim that "the people" in the Second Amendment are somehow not the same "the people" from the other Amendments. It also points out that the Second Amendment protects modern firearms just as much as the First Amendment protects posting on the Internet. I looked over other articles by the same author and I'm guessing she and I don't agree about a lot of stuff. But she nailed this one.

Conan vs Harry Potter. That's one HP movie I might pay to see.

You'd pay money to see a short??
