Ahead Of Thursdays's Health Care Summit, Democrats Still Pretty Much Nowhere
— DrewM

Of course, it's all the Republicans fault.

Except for Harry "Please Don't Beat Your Wife" Reid, Obama's warmed over version of the Senate's bill hasn't impressed anyone.

“I was actually surprised that they’re pushing it again. The most important thing is jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs. We need to focus on jobs,” said Rep. Heath Shuler, North Carolina Democrat and a leader of the 54-member Blue Dog coalition of conservative Democrats.

Shuler, speaking to The Daily Caller on his way out of a meeting of the Democratic caucus on Monday evening at the Capitol, expressed the sentiment that is increasingly common in Washington, the reason so many are scratching their heads at ObamaÂ’s insistence on trying to pass a catch-all piece of legislation.

“I don’t think a comprehensive bill can pass,” he said.

...House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, Maryland Democrat, knocked down the idea that the presidentÂ’s proposal represented a product that all Democrats were supporting unquestionably, undermining the White House argument that Republicans must unite behind one proposal before ThursdayÂ’s meeting at the White House.

“I’m not sure there is a ‘this bill.’ We have a bill. The Senate’s got a bill. The president has put a proposal on the floor. We’re going to talk on Thursday,” Hoyer said in an interview on his way out of the meeting.

Pelosi says of course they are going to pass a bill but she always says that.

There's also still the matter of abortion funding. Bart Stupak isn't buying Obama's language.

"Unfortunately, the president's proposal encompasses the Senate language allowing public funding of abortion," Stupak wrote in a statement released Tuesday morning.

He was unequivocal in the next line, saying, "The Senate language is a significant departure from current law and is unacceptable."

And just for fun, Obama and his minions are lying when they say the Republicans don't have a health care plan. They are also simultaneously demanding, as Hoyer points out, that Republicans have one plan. This is pretty funny since the Democrats have 3 at last count. I guess that's ok because the Democrats are in charge or something.

I still don't see anything passing. You can talk about reconciliation all you want but there's not even agreement on what they'd be passing that way. Tomorrow's show is going to produce nothing but a chance for the Democrats to say they tried to work with the Republicans and they will go the nuclear route. Problem is they are fools calling their own bluff. That never works out for anyone.

Unrelated...I see people are asking about Ace. I emailed back and forth with him a bit yesterday so he's alive and well.

*Thanks to Kratos for correcting me on the date of the summit. I changed the headline to reflect, you know, reality.

5 GOP response should be "Propose something the American people overwhelmingly support instead of oppose and there won't be any way we can stand against you."

This BS is just a way to try to put the opposition in a box to either capitulate or blame for reconciliation.  Throw it back at them.

12 Two numbers to know

The cost of defensive medicine per year: 600 billion dollars.

Medicare and Medicaid fraud per year: 60 billion dollars.

Good luck Mr. President on increasing your funding for investigating and detecting Medicare and Medicaid fraud.  Your party will squash that.

But you could just increase funding for the DOJ since they actually prosecute the cases and send the criminals to jail.

Wow.. what's wrong with people today huh?  Look, just because this thing will actually drive up health care costs and bankrupt the country is no reason to reject it out of hand.  After all, remember the Dem's new mantra, "We have to do something about health care!"

Sadly it seems that "something" is to just make matters worse, but hey, it's something right!  After all, without government intervention all those wife beating, working woman hating conservatives might actually start thinking for themselves!

I think it's funny how many times the Republicans fall for the same Democrat tricks.

Many morons here have often made the analogy between the Democrats and Lucy holding the football. It's true. Once again the Republicans have been convinced to hitch their wagons to a completely partisan, wrongheaded, and harmful piece of legislation.

If only these dunces would open their eyes and realize they're 'working' with the scum of the earth in Charlie Rangle, Dick Durbin, Ed Markey, Barney Frank, etc.

These people are hacks and thieves. None of them would last two seconds in the private sector, yet they're submitting radical nation-changing legislation.

If Obama was even close to sincere about hearing Republican ideas he would have never bypassed the Conference Committee procedure (which is different then the "reconciliation" procedure). He specifically did that to keep the Republicans from offering amendments and having input into the final bill. If I was in the Republican leadership I would constantly hammer him on this point.

This whole "summit" is just a farce to give the appearance of bipartisanship while simultaneously excluding Republicans from the normal way of writing and passing bills. That is what the Republicans should talk about in this summit and not "health care". The question is: why should Republicans give their consent to a process that has been high jacked by the Democratic leadership? Why should the American citizen give there consent?

The best I can tell the entire way Obama, Pelosi and Reid handled this is a suppression of a republican form of government. The next logical step for them is to just say were going to do this whether a bill is passed in Congress or not.

48 The amazing thing remains, that the Demotards can still whine about obstructing socialized medicine when they have had full control of both Houses of Congress for years, and now the White House as well. They can do anything they want, and even had supermajorities in both chambers until recently. The Demotards are fully in charge. This isn't a secret. Hence, the polling. They have more control than the GOP ever had under Bush. My first response to any howling about obstruction is "The Dems have both Houses and the Oval Office." The argument stops there.

86 The people hated the Senate bill because they hate the Senate, They hated the House bill because they hate the House. ... But the people will love Obama's version of the health bill because they love Obama. Exactly. PA is right. This guy is seriously in the grip of NPD. Barry has an infinite supply of one thing: self-regard. I mean bottomless, without bounds, possessing a cardinality above aleph-zero. Which is why I don't think he will give us the pleasure of an on-camera, live meltdown. This man-child also possesses an extraordinary measure of self-control when it comes to being on stage or on camera. It is integral to the largest component of his personality: cunning. He is far from bright or intelligent or even well-read. "Breathalyzers?" "Profits and earnings ratio?" The Austrian language? He reads Andrew Sullivan. This guy is very average when it comes to knowledge and ratiocination. Nevertheless he has erected an entire career upon the unearned gifts of white liberal guilt and affirmative action, the blind eyes of local Chicago politicians promoting a good-looking brand at the expense of ignoring twenty years of race-baiting worship in Wright's church. His only real accomplishment is getting booted to higher and higher office, and voting "present" half the time when he was expected to make a decision. Even his autobiographies are suspect of provenance, and full of "composite" (i.e., false) characters. The man would have been a perfect substitute for Brian Williams or Tom Brokaw, but basking in the adulation of political worship proved more attractive. He's here for one reason. To preen on stage, to soak in the glory. Ruling (not governing) comes in a distant second. Besides, he has Pelosi and Reid to do that for him.

89 In the United States, we define "tough shit for you" as 600 billion dollars in annual expenditures through Medicare and Medicaid.

Which contributes to driving up the price for everyone else.

Posted by: HeatherRadish at February 23, 2010 09:24 AM (mR7mk)

90 This Obama non-bill is just political theater to persuade his supporters that he's doing something, instead of allowing the process to die, and to provide political cover by later blaming the Republican super-minority.

On reconciliation, for the Nth time, that's a non-starter.   Its one of those things that's mathematically possible, but not politically possible.  If the Dems could pull this off, they'd have already done so.  They can't, and there is no prospect that they will be able to do so in the current political climate.

For that route to work, the Democrat House members would have to agree to vote to pass the Senate Healthcare bill, blindly hoping (and without any guarantee) in a contentious election year that their problems with it will get fixed later in a reconciliation process they have no control over.

Unlikely that this could have happened a month ago, but now post-Scott Brown, its effectively impossible.

Careful with the french my friend.  Too much of that pretty soon you become fluent, then you end up moving to a country full of surrender monkeys that hasn't won a war in almost 3 centuries and spends most of it's time on it's moral high horse even though they wouldn't even be a country if it weren't for the people they constantly decry.

Were not the lone superpower - we're one of two, Russia being the second.  Don't let "glastnost" fool you for a second.  The people in power over there are still the same people as before, nothings really changed that much, they just put a nicer "face" on things is all.

Sure, they withdrew from Eastern Europe, but they still have more than enough firepower to wipe us out on tap.  But they've changed tactics - instead of playing the "were a better superpower than you are" game, now they're playing a new game, war by proxy.  They have realized our one, great weakness as a nation.  We can't stand to be percieved as "picking" on the little guy.

They support all of these other two bit dictators and probably laugh their butts off over at the politboro watching Iran make total fools of our current administration.  They make tons in profit, embarrass the crap out of us, and no longer have to spend megabucks trying to prove their military is better than ours because they realize you can't beat America in a straight up military fight.

Nope, instead they've switched games to one they know they can win - the one were we beat ourselves with our own guilt and revulsion of being considered a "Imperialist Power".

Imho, the Soviet Union quit being a true superpower long before it crumbled; their infrastructure and to an extent their true military capability was vastly overrated.  By the '80s they were kaput -- they may have the firepower, but the big question is and always was: but can they muster up anything to bring it that will actually fly?

As for their economy: well, Russia has an abundance of natural resources, but nobody wants to really invest a chunk of change in them.  I'll grant that the same folks are still in power over there (no, I didn't buy glasnost for one minute either).
