— Gabriel Malor Honestly, I hate how the Left goes ape-shit every time a Republican voter or supporter (not a politician) does something stupid or illegal. As if the fact that the individual is a Republican somehow has relevance to their stupid or illegal act. And as if other Republicans should feel guilty or responsible for criminal idiots hiding among us. Lefty bloggers and MSNBC are frequent abusers of this strategy and justify it by squawking "hypocrisy" as if two wrongs make a right.
So, with the note that I believe her far left views and apparently tiresome support for President Obama did nothing to cause her crazy or compel her crimes:
Meanwhile, in an interview with the Chronicle of Higher Education, Anderson said he was searching for the “trigger” to his wife’s breakdown, and that he wondered whether an e-mail message - potentially in the form of a final tenure denial - might have upset her, because university higher-ups were known to send “nastygrams” on Fridays.A family source said Bishop, a mother of four children - the youngest a third-grade boy - was a far-left political extremist who was “obsessed” with President Obama to the point of being off-putting.
The article also quotes an anonymous "classmate" of Bishop's slain brother, Seth, who describes their childhood household as "anything but a home...a really dreary, dark place where there wasnÂ’t a lot of love." I'm skeptical that so many former classmates and friends appear to be coming out of the woodwork to say predictable things about Bishop and her family, particularly those claiming recollection of events 23 years ago.
Whatever. I'm sure Bishop's "dreary, dark" childhood will be compelling in the Lifetime movie.

Sure they did.
She thinks (a) she deserves it, (b) the ends justify the means, (c) she has been seriously enabled in this whole farce by trumping "the rule of law" with "my connections."
The last paragraph sums up the President as well. Teh crazy is all hers, but the viewpoint is mighty similar.

Do you think even a few months ago that the phrase 'was a far-left political extremist who was “obsessed” with President Obama to the point of being off-putting' would have made it into print.
On the other hand I don't know about a lifetime movie, but I wonder if jury selection will be depicted like this http://tinyurl.com/ykh7n4t

Far Left views? No way! Really?
Who would have predicted THAT?

Sure she was an Obama supporter, but I bet if I click those links Gabe put up I'll find she she was now pissed off at Obama for being too right-wing.

I assume that because she is a LWNJ she believes that she is above the law and her actions are not criminal.
I remember hearing a story from my days as a postdoc about a professor who was denied tenure at a small college in the upper midwest, but the committee told her that she could try again in a year. Well, she opted to leave the university and went to work in private industry with a starting salary more than twice what she was making as a professor. If I remember correctly, when the university found out that she was leaving for a much higher paying job, they just about lost their sh*t. But that situation was resolved without any violence.
See, Professor Bishop? You can do it without killing people. Dumbass.

IIRC, there was a grad student at Stanford about 20 years ago who was getting a similar multi-year jerkaround in the graduate mathematics program -- until he flipped and beat his faculty adviser to death with a ball-peen hammer. After serving his term (this is back when California had 7-year sentences for murder), he was interviewed right after his release. After expressing regret, he was asked whether he might have it in him to re-offend. Like a true mathematician, he stated that he didn't know, as he had already done it once.

Posted by: ddiddly at February 14, 2010 10:32 PM (JXF5g)
ddiddly,
The tenure process is a such an archaic system. Few other jobs depend on the other employees to decide on hiring, promotion, and what amounts to lifelong employment (i.e., tenure). Today, these decisions are made by tenured faculty who have ceased to be productive or were trained in an era when standards were lower and knowledge less. Applicants for faculty positions and tenure track assistant profs often are superior to tenured faculty on the decision-making committees. Votes are as much determined by department politics or based on "what's in it for me?" A generation (or two) of scientists have been denied faculty positions by the deadwood who can never be fired. The system is destroying America's technology standing, which will inevitably translate into a productivity and income slide here.

Amy Bishop had worked closely for three years with Dick Reeves, who had been CEO of BizTech, which had been working with her to market a cell incubator she invented to replace traditional equipment used in live cell cultures.
A (like a Petri dish) cell culture dish is very widely used and does the job very well, and it is hard to know what the need is for a special mobile incubator. This woman does not live in reality.

But, hey, being a University Professor at Harvard (one of 6) is kind of like being The Precedent of the Harvard Law Review - totally meaningless and laughably contrived.

I once worked with a woman who had a doctorate in biology from Harvard. She was very smart, and was a very good programmer - she had the good sense to quit academia and get into the real world - but she once told me that getting the doctorate "ruined" her life. Given the pressure-cooker atmosphere of those places, and given how strongly lefty places tend to cultivate "teh crazy", I'm surprised that more of these folks don't go postal.
As for the "friends" coming out of the woodwork, at least it's a refreshing change from the usual "he was so normal" reactions. It's a marvel to me that she married and actually bore children - poor kids.

#146 WTF are you babbling about? NAFTA's not the reason you're out of work, living in your parents basement, and stalking the girl middle-aged woman next door.
Thanks for telling me this now, Rob. All my life I was blaming NAFTA and "teh corparations" for my failings in life...

last night Batchelor was discussing the fact that corporations, in all sectors, were "saving cash" and not hiring and some still firing. He said it is quite possible that the American R&D departments will begin to go "over there" where the manufacturing is taking place. It's going to be a problem. The free market is going to have to answer it and it probably doesn't include entitlements for unions. But, don't you think they will fight it tooth and nail?

Amy Bishop looks like Lily Tomlin's character in Getting Away with Murder.
/Not a Skinemax title, but the movie still sucked.

It's a certainty that they will, curious.
At least in the end, there will be only chaos.

Cell culture dishes are fine for small-scale stuff but for scaled-up operations, there's definitely a need for specialized equipment. Scaling up biological-based processes (as opposed to your usual chemical processes) is more complicated than it seems at first glance. If you come up with a good, workable solution for that you can make a ton of money.
It's hard for me to understand (as a grad student) why this woman thought not getting tenure was justification for shooting up a faculty meeting. Seems like she had a lot going for her with this private venture. If it worked she could have easily supported her family with it. Clearly she had issues, to put it mildly. I've deliberately tried, since coming here, to make sure that all my self-worth is not wrapped up in my research and academic life. Sounds simple, but the effort to stay happy and healthy and not lose my mind over the pressure is harder than you would think.

Whoooo; the lawyer on Fox just now said the shotgun was a pump.
You can not "accidently fire" a pump 3 times.
Posted by: Vic at February 15, 2010 06:27 AM (QrA9E)
Vic -- sure you can! You see, her arm became spastic when she grabbed the gun from her brother...as the initial first round discharged accidentally, her arm became spastic and, through the first pump, caused her index finger to hit the trigger. This happened twice after the initial, accidental and tragic first shot. I'll get her life in prison and she'll work on her memoir.

Anything that makes the other side look bad, for me, is just fine. as long as it is legal, as long as it is true, and as long as it is not manufactured, then i say USE it. this is what the left does, and it works. If the right simply TOLD the truth, and SHOWED the general public what the left IS I think a lot of people would be surprised. let them hang themselves by thier own actions and thier own hate. let the public see the hate-filled anarchists, smashing windows, creating havoc, and yes, spewing hatred of jews openly on the streets of not only western europe, but in the USA as well.
did this woman kill these professors because she was a leftist-obama supporter? of course not. she killed them because she was an unhinged nut case who felt the world was out to get her and she wanted revenge. but it certainly doesn't hurt to let it be known that she was a leftist-obama supporter. it does not hurt our cause by pointing this out. in fact, in only helps it. this is politics people, and the sooner the right wakes up, and stops thinking that the "truth speaks for itself" the better off we'll all be.
