AoSHQ Podcast: Guest, Dana Perino
— andy

Dana Perino, co-host of Fox News' The Five and former Press Secretary for President George W. Bush, joins Ace, Gabe, Drew, John and me to discuss a wide range of topics like the #WarOnWomen, IRS scandal and press transparency, and also to poke a little fun at Greg Gutfeld. But mainly to poke a little fun at Greg Gutfeld.

And then it gets dark ...

You can watch the full Gutfeld Not Cool interview that Dana mentions here. It's excellent. And on behalf of the HQ, thank you very much for the mention Greg.

30 "Hank Williams, Jr.-A Country Boy Can Survive"

That song feels pretty bitter in contemporary context -- of the million pound shithammer of federal doom being dropped on some country boys in Nevada right this very minute.

I figure the next thing we'll hear is that the government have decided to retain the A-10 attack jet after all. To use on stubborn rural ranchers who won't shut up and do as they're told.

46 Is there any argument for why States shouldn't manage pretty much all Federal Lands? I'll exclude military bases and things like that. I mean the 85% of Nevada that is empty that the Feds own. Why shouldn't that just be given to Nevada to do as they see fit? Ideally I'd want it sold off to private owners. But at least let the States control their own land. Is the argument that the States don't actually want it, cause the don't want the maintenance costs? What are the maintenance costs anyway? Firefighting is a huge cost -- don't the states and municipalities pay those costs? Or do the Feds foot the bill?

We had a school board election this week.  Candidates  were very clearly of one stripe or the other, with one who  was a bit of a wild card because she has no real record.  Five candidates, three slots.

They elected the two "lets spend shedloads of money on all the crep we can" candidates, and the dingbat broad with no  record.

Kicked off the guy who was  on the board, and was trying to keep  some semblance of fiscal responsibility going.

And this is an area that essentially NEVER  runs Democrats, because they never win.

People are stupid.

81 As I understand it, they aren't actually trying to put the solar panels on the same land. However (and this is from InfoWars, so truckload of salt) the permit for the solar farm (elsewhere) is using this site as a remediation trade-off (like they do with wetlands I guess?). So, if true- the existence of the cows still breaks the deal for the solar farm, I guess this is just a nuance.

86 Posted by: Costanza Defense at April 11, 2014 04:35 PM (ZPrif) Gov. Gary R. Herbert of Utah, a Republican, signed into law House Bill 148. It asks the federal government, which owns a majority of the land in the state, to give back more than 20 million acres. A similar measure, passed by the Arizona Senate last month, is awaiting further action in the Capitol in Phoenix. Bills patterned after Utah’s are being prepared for filing next year in Colorado, Idaho, Montana and New Mexico, lawmakers involved in the effort said. Utah is also preparing lawsuits, for filing as early as next month, to reclaim thousands of sections of road that cross federal lands but that the state argues should properly be the province of the states and counties. ...The federal government, Mr. Ivory and other proponents said, reneged on Congressional promises going back to the 1800s, which held that Washington’s control of tens of millions of acres in the West in national forests, rangelands and parks was only temporary. That pledge, they say, was written into contractual obligations in the founding documents of many states, and was followed through in some places but not others. The Midwest and Plains states, for example, are now almost entirely private lands, but hop a meridian or two west and the picture changes completely. ...“If you look at a map of the United States, all the states in the East are private land,” said Al Melvin, a Republican state senator who sponsored the bill in Arizona, where the federal government owns 48 percent of the land. “That’s why many of them are doing so well — it’s private land in Texas and North Dakota where they’re drilling for oil and fracking for gas,” he added. “The 50 states are separate but not equal.” http://preview.tinyurl.com/p8q35vq

If someone is in a place where they have a legal right to be, and are not breaking the law, and not posing a threat, they shouldn't be hearing any such "back up or else force" orders from anyone in law enforcement. Not without a large cash settlement later.

Over the years, I have seen a few rogue police issue nonsensical commands with no actual justification and then hammer people for "failing to follow the orders of a police officer". That business needs to be more tightly overseen.

There are some circumstances where police are wholly justified in issuing orders. Not all circumstances. There must be reasonable grounds and accountability.

Apparently, Bundy stopped paying his grazing fees when they relocated the 'protected turtle zone' over to the property his family had had grazing rights on for over a century.

The Feds moved the 'protected turtle zone' from some land that developers wanted to use.

They revoked his grazing rights...over a turtle.

Hmmm...trying to frame my response in such a way that makes each hordeling comfortable with his or her own personal diploma framing choices, while hoping that one in particular feels scorned like a douchenozzle.

I can see framing one if you're the first in your family to graduate college, or you never expected to make it, or there's some other compelling reason of merited pride to hang it up.  My BA was not extraordinary to me.

My MBA was an achievement.  It was at an undisputed top 10 b-school, it was a huge challenge for me (liberal arts refugee) and unlike undergrad I paid for it.  But it's a diploma.  It seems showoffy to put it up.  Anybody who needs to know knows that I have that degree, employers can verify it.

I understand that doctors and lawyers put them up in their offices to reassure their clients that they've been educated.  In business, though, I'm either making sense or I'm not, regardless of where I went to school.

I choose whether or not to buy beef.  I don't get a choice as to whether or not to pay taxes, and I particularly dislike when a person assumes for himself the fight to decide what to do with land that belongs to me.

310 300 Pep, what do you think about fishermen hauling catches out of "your" waters without sending you a cut? Posted by: Lincolntf

I think they should have to pay a fee to exploit resources in public waters.  That money should be spent on things like fishery replenishment, or the Coast Guard, so that when the CG has to haul the fisherman's asses out of a leaky boat in the middle of a storm, I'm not left paying for it.

The fishermen will naturally pass the increased cost onto the consumer.  Great.  Let the people who eat the fish derived from the fishery pay the expenses of being in the fish business.

You've got this part wrong, pep.

Bundy doesn't claim the land is "his" to do with as he pleases...

He wants to get his cattle off...but the government won't let him.

The BLM goons have confiscated his  herd of  cattle.

And they are piss poor stewards of them.

They've been stampeding them using helicopters...separating newborn calves from their mothers, because the little ones can't keep up.

Now...they're talking about having to put a lot of them down, euthanizing them...because they're too weak and skinny to survive.

From my admittedly imperfect understanding, the real issue is that Bundy was told 20 years ago to get his cattle off the land, and didn't do so.  The Feds want him to pay the amount he gained by ignoring a valid order, and in lieu of his cutting a check, they've taken his cattle as collateral.  Now he wants the ill-gotten fruits of that trespass and doesn't want to have to pay for his illegal use of public land.  Sorry, but no.  If you deliberately ignore the law in an attempt to continue enriching yourself, then tough.
