AP: Fires, Floods Perfectly Track Predictions
— Ace

The 'great cow' at Racenna in great trouble,

Led by fifteen shut up at Fornase:

At Rome there will be born two double-headed monsters,

Blood, fire, flood, the greatest ones in space.

Oh, wait, they don't mean every third quatrain of quack prophet Nostradamus.

Oh dear no -- they mean science.

Floods, fires, melting ice and feverish heat: From smoke-choked Moscow to water-soaked Iowa and the High Arctic, the planet seems to be having a midsummer breakdown. It's not just a portent of things to come, scientists say, but a sign of troubling climate change already under way.

The weather-related cataclysms of July and August fit patterns predicted by climate scientists, the Geneva-based World Meteorological Organization says - although those scientists always shy from tying individual disasters directly to global warming.

Um-- yeah, they "shy away" from that. They call an easy-lay AP reporter and feed him the story, and then say "but don't quote us as claiming a connection, because that would be unscientific; but by all means -- you make the claim which we cannot."

"There is no time to waste," because societies must be equipped to deal with global warming, says British government climatologist Peter Stott.

He said modelers of climate systems are "very keen" to develop supercomputer modeling that would enable more detailed linking of cause and effect as a warming world shifts jet streams and other atmospheric currents. Those changes can wreak weather havoc.

No time to waste. It's gonna be bad, people:

The New Land is scorched in the year 20 and 9,

The people cry out for mercy, but death does prevail,

SummerÂ’s heat and drought is unrelenting through September,

The people cannot escape, tens of thousands die.

By all means, let's get some more of that "modeling" going on supercomputers because everyone knows that supercomputers are smart and don't, say, just regurgitate your starting assumptions back to you.

Thanks to Dr. Spank.

2 Wait, I seem to recall the recent cold streak was not proof of global cooling because temporary temperature trends - of 10 years - don't mean anything.

Apparently one hot month means we are all going to die though.

Let's hope they don't decide to do more climate modeling after measuring the change in temperature of 11 AM to 1 PM...

OT: How to Fix a Dysfunctional Senate: Cut 98 Senators

WASHINGTON—Apparently the Senate can work quickly after all. You just have to limit it to two senators.

On Thursday, the chamber approved a $600 million border-security bill in 31 minutes, from opening gavel to final passage. While their colleagues were enjoying a summer recess, Sen. Chuck Schumer flew in from New York and Sen. Ben Cardin drove his Pontiac from Baltimore to represent the entire Senate in the cavernous chamber.

I'm starting to wish they were right.  That way all the fucking climate scientists and their media lackeys would be killed in the glorious cleansing cataclysm.  I have a pretty good feeling about the next global disaster, whatever it may be.  The weak and stupid (welfare scum and muslims and 3rd worlders) will be wiped away, while the strong, smart, and industrious survive.

BRING IT!

Sadly, so such thing will happen.  Weather will simply continue to be weather.

This is how reporters try to "lead" the reading audience.  "They" won't outright say it, but they'll organize the story to get your mind to make the connection, with a little disclaimer *nudge, nudge, wink, wink* at the end.

And, yes, alexthechick, they've been screwing up Great Lakes (or just L. Michigan?) temperature readings while screaming about the Great Lakes' water being massively warmer than ever before. Muskwa,

It was actually a bit cooler than that in my hometown of Houston, but it's been in the high 80s in East TX as well. The good thing about H-town is that the clouds roll-in from the Gulf, but it's not always that way here in East TX. I would be quite happy if it rained more during the summer.

88 Guess what I got in an email today. An announcement for a talk at Chautauqua Park "Science, Politics and Emotion: Talking Climate Change" Oh and its a talk on how can they effectively communicate in the face of the skeptical prominent voices in the media ..... because 2010 has been the hottest year on record. -- Well it has been hot on the SST record which is the most honest measure since they do very unscientific adjustments to the land temperature records, but only goes back ~30 years and the 98/99 El Nino summer was the hottest monthly anomaly. But it gets my dander up and the liberals in Boulder will be lapping up the effing nonsense. Oh well they always push for liberal crap anyway, but I think the rest of the state may have been aroused from stupor by the wonder that has been the last 23 months.

128 New Scientist magazine has reported that the jet stream's flow has been slowed by a "blocking event," which can create extreme conditions in weather systems.
The UK Met Office's climate scientist Jeff Knight told BBC News, "Circulation anomalies tend to create warm and cool anomalies: while it has been very hot in western Russia, it has been cooler than average in adjacent parts of Siberia that lie on the other side of the high pressure system where Arctic air is being drawn southwards."
New Scientist magazine likens the blocked weather system to Pakistani floods, as well, since monsoon season has not yet begun in neighboring regions.

131 who has done much of this modelling himself – points out that the resolution in climate models is too low to reproduce atmospheric patterns like blocking events. So they cannot say anything about whether or not their frequency will change.

There is some tentative evidence that the sun may be involved. Earlier this year astrophysicist Mike Lockwood of the University of Reading, UK, showed that winter blocking events were more likely to happen over Europe when solar activity is low – triggering freezing winters (New Scientist, 17 April, p 6).

Now he says he has evidence from 350 years of historical records to show that low solar activity is also associated with summer blocking events (Environmental Research Letters, in press). "There's enough evidence to suspect that the jet stream behaviour is being modulated by the sun," he says.

Blackburn says that blocking events have been unusually common over the last three years, for instance, causing severe floods in the UK and heatwaves in eastern Europe in 2007. Solar activity has been low throughout.

The worst of the computer models:

This is an update to a thread, some months back, which was in a Monte series about derivatives, the Black-Scholes formula, the Ivy League and AIG.  I intended to post this little bit then but I didnÂ’t have the time.

As Monte wrote, Black-Scholes, an imperfect formula to determine hedging risk, was certainly a main part of the problem at AIG, but there was a more proximate culprit.

Based on a three part series in the Washington Post, the site TPM writes:

Â“According to computer models devised by Gary Gorton, a Yale Business Professor and consultant to the unit, there was a 99.85 percent chance that AIGFP would never have to pay out on these deals. Essentially, this would happen only if the economy went into a full-blown depression, in which case, the AIGers believed, the counter-parties would be wiped out, and therefore would hardly be in a position to demand payment anyway. With the backing of Cassano, then the COO, Savage greenlighted the deals. Credit default swaps were born.”

AIGFP is AIG Financial Products, the group that wrote all those derivatives contracts. Cassano, who became head of the unit, had neither the training nor experience to verify this risk assessment of near zero, nor did he commission a second opinion.  It was apparently too good to check.

Armed with his Yale calculation of near-zero risk (no doubt based in part on Black-Scholes), Cassano then cut loose his band of young, eager, Ivy League traders to wreak contracts of at least 60 trillion, including billions in profits and tens of millions in bonuses.  Since there was “no risk”, at no time was a reserve established or rights to collateral sought.

(In all my years in banking I have never seen anything so strange – you could loan Bill Gates a hundred bucks and still assume some element of risk.)

Furthermore, at no time did any internal or external audit detect even a shiver of risk.

None of this came out in recent congressional hearings of course.  Cassano only evaded, danced, blamed the auditors and admitted that he had blocked the AIG Risk Assessment Team from looking at his group.  Even had he used the terms “spectacularly stupid” and “cataclysmically wrong” it still would have ranked high in the history of understatements.

In the annals of destruction caused by computer models, this one surely ranks above even those that informed Al GoreÂ’s predictions of 20-foot sea level rises and iceless polar caps.  The IPCC has only cost us several billion so far and we have got 160 billion into AIG, not including a few related matters.  The 160 billion actually went through AIG and onward to Goldman, Deutsche bank and several dozen others to pay off CDS contracts, the failure of which would have been otherwise assured, and Yale risk assessment notwithstanding.

In the old Soviet Mayday parade, the joke goes; one man marched alone after the battalions of soldiers and the ranks of tanks and artillery.  When asked about it, an old hand remarked: “That is the economist; he has more destructive power than anything you have seen so far.”

Perhaps we should now update this old joke and include Yale professors and computer models.

And almost nobody knows this story: the computer model behind the almost-destruction of the world financial system.

Cry “havoc” and let slip the Yale Professors!

156 What is truly ironic about the catastrophic, evil-human global warming retards is that they rely on laughable computer models to provide the great bulk of their "evidence" when the whole idea of 'sensitive dependence on initial conditions' and modern chaos theory came out of Lorenz's attempt to model climate.  It's a slap in the face to Lorenz to use his field (essentially) to make a mockery of his work in order to enslave the globe and steal trillions of dollars.

The other funny part is that econometric models have had much more funding, and much better brains, working on them for decades and they are still totally worthless models for making predictions with any accuracy.  But the pea-brain climate scientologists think that their "models" (and I use that word loosely, as climate models don't really model the climate, physics-wise, but do nothing but curve fitting with bucketloads of arbitrary constants and "adjustments").  I have yet to hear someone explain to me why climate models should be considered to be even half as good as econometric models, which model a much simpler system and still blow chunks.

It was unusually cool in Southern CA this spring and summer, even some rain past the usual start of the dry season.

It didn't get over 75 until mid July, just as I happened to have to do a ton of physical work moving my stuff out of my apartment, when it got up to close to 100.
It's been pretty normal temperature wise here in SW Florida

O/T:  H/A linked this Weekly Standard smackdown of the NYT:

The New York Times used to be called the Gray Lady of American newspapers. The sobriquet implied a certain stateliness, a sense of responsibility, the possession of high virtue. But the Gray Lady is far from the grande dame she once was. For years now she has been going heavy on the rouge, lipstick, and eyeliner, using a push-up bra, and gadding about in stiletto heels. She’s become a bit—perhaps more than a bit—of a slut, whoring after youth through pretending to be with-it. I’ve had it with the old broad; after nearly 50 years together, I’ve determined to cut her loose.

. . .

The New York Times Magazine has always been dull, but earlier it erred on the side of seriousness. Now it is dull on the side of ersatz hipness.

"All racial groups should be represented," Lee said, according to the Hill. She hoped federal weather officials "would try to be inclusive of African-American names."

If they do that, it's gonna be 'Oh sure, name a the fuckin hurricane after a black guy!'

In fact I think that's the whole plan.

Shiela Jackson Lee orders the bureaucrats to name the storms with 'african american' names, then the NAACP sues them for $5M and kicks 2M back into campaign organizing.

275 Meanwhile, on another planet, in a galaxy far, far away:

"Over 1 million fish and thousands of alligators, turtles, dolphins and other river wildlife are floating dead in numerous Bolivian rivers in the three eastern/southern departments of Santa Cruz, Beni and Tarija. The extreme cold front that hit Bolivia in mid-July caused water temperatures to dip below the minimum temperatures river life can tolerate. As a consequence, rivers, lakes, lagoons and fisheries are brimming with decomposing fish and other creatures."

(3 Aug. 2010 - Update: The number of dead fish and other water-dependent wildlife has increased to about 6 million.)

Florida, Alabama and Georgia are being overrun by aggressive rock pythons and Burmese pythons released into the wild by jackasses who had them as pets, and each female python lays 100 eggs twice a year, and the infestation of those dangerous snakes is predicted to move north into the Carolinas and as far west and north as Texas and Ohio within the next two years, and our useless government isn't bothering to address that issue either, because whacko environmentalists actually want to have those extremely dangerous snakes protected.

If dogs, cats, rabbits, squirrels, birds, etc., are mysteriously disappearing in your neighborhood lately, you can be pretty sure that you've already got one or more pythons in your neoghborhood, and small children could be next as their food supply of other mammals diminishes, and as they get bigger and more aggressive, too.

everyone knows that supercomputers are smart and don't, say, just regurgitate your starting assumptions back to you.

Unless your code is very, very, very good (or completely cooked), you're going to almost always get something....unexpected. See: Lorenz, Edward, specifically chaos theory.

Unless your code is very, very, very good (or completely cooked), you're going to almost always get something....unexpected.

Actually, not almost always. Always.

And not unless your code is very, very, very good. Always.

Chaos Theory predicts that given enough time, you'll always have wildly divergant results from certain complex systems like weather because you lack infinite precision in your measurements of the initial variables.

And the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle suggests that having infinite precision is literally impossible.

So such systems will always eventually result in something unpredictable and seemingly chaotic. No matter how well you understand them, no matter how much computational power you have or how good your code is, there will remain a sort of relative 'event horizon' beyond which you cannot predict anything at all.

For that matter... the climate of the earth is fuckin huge. Like... the size of the earth. Lots of people get lots of wild ideas about what computers can do...  Let me put it this way.

Let's say you wanted to build a computer that could model and track every single piece of matter in the entire universe, and be a model of the entire universe.

Well, there is already a model of the entire universe - it's called the universe. And it took every single thing in the entire universe to model everything in the entire universe. So it would with a computer.

To build a computer that could model everything in the universe, it would require... (at least, and likely much more than) all the matter in the universe to build it.

Even if you could have infinite precision in your measurements and knew everything about the climate system on Earth, to build a computer that would completely accurately model the entire climate of Earth would require a computer at least as large as the Earth itself.

Cock suckers and super computers.  Only on AoSHQ can you read about both in one series of postings.

My take is that WMO is a bunch of super cocksuckers who can't grab their ass wtih both hands.  They are referring to IPCC predictions.

The IPCC predicted everything would happen sometime.  Nobody needs a super computer or cock sucker to tell them that.
