AP Says Obama Must Take Vacations to Help Local Economies
— Ace

"Take vacations?" Is that the right way to say it?

When you're on vacation more than work, isn't it less "taking vacation" and more "a part time job with flex-scheduling"?

Anyway, of a piece with this morning's I Feel My Pain duo of Pity Poor Boy-King Obama bleats from the NYT and Katie Couric, here's AP, where the AP stands for Always Predictable:

Obama looks to boost Gulf tourism with family trip

Can I point out? For three days, then he's off to flood-ravaged, plague-sick Martha's Vinyard for ten days.

Feel the healing, Gulf!

I love how Obama's not really taking a vacation to take time off from his busy golf schedule but to heal a whole region.

President Barack Obama is heeding his own advice to American vacationers, taking his family to the Gulf Coast this weekend to help the sagging tourism industry.
The president will arrive Saturday and spend just over 24 hours in the Panama City, Fla., area, a quick jaunt in contrast to the family's upcoming 10-day vacation to Martha's Vineyard, known as a destination for the wealthy and privileged.

White House officials dismiss questions about the length of the family's stay, saying that has no relation to the president's commitment to the region's recovery.

"The president is deeply committed to the folks in the Gulf region," said White House spokesman Bill Burton. He said Obama wants to ensure the people of the Gulf Coast are "made whole again after what was a terrible catastrophe."

Obama's been promoting the idea of Gulf travel as a way for Americans to help the region's recovery. The White House says the Obamas and daughter Sasha (her sister Malia's at summer camp) plan to spend much of their time in the Gulf enjoying the area's recreational activities.

Slublog, who sent this, noted that when Bush traveled places, he was called lazy and disengaged, and not credited with healing the land by his mere traveling through it.

You know what I'm thinking of, right?

No? And you call yourself geeks.

Yeah, now you see.

If that isn't clear -- the "Holy Grail" in the 1981 Exclaibur is the realization that Arthur and the land are one, and that he restores himself, and the droughted land, simply by riding through it -- suddenly dead trees bloom with glorious flowers.

Update: From Jim Geraghty's Morning Jolt, via ArthurK:

In related news [excerpted from an article]: "President Barack Obama is capping his birthday week with an afternoon of golfing on Saturday and a barbecue on Sunday." That's right: "birthday week."

Birthday week?

I think I might just take a birthday month one of these days.

So, it would also appear that all the hype is what has helped injure the Gulf Coast economies, & it's rather ironic that the President is now visiting after calling this disaster the worst in history. Perhaps if he & the media hadn't been so hysterical, more people would be visiting.

/Not saying that it wasn't a disaster, but rather that "the worst in history" was clearly a histrionic overstatement.

54 >>>This movie was singled out for a remake for whatever reason. Bryan Singer is supposedly directing it. This script in particular? Well probably 90% branding. I mean, the basics are kind of always there, right? And they will change stuff of course. The script itself was okay. I liked the Uther parts, and how they slipped in the sword in the stone, and handling how the Affair crippled the kingdom, and that great ride "restoring" the land. Although I was pissed off that the Holy Grail was just a frigging metaphor for some prophecy ("arthur and the land are one"). There is always that big problem in these movies that Mordred is supposed to be Arthur's son so you have to advance the plot by 20 years at some point in the movie, which is always jarring. (And Galahad, Lancelot's son, was supposed to find the grail in many tellings. In this movie (and some tellings) it's percival.)

As for Excalibur, I think it had a superb cast & I like how it (somewhat) follows Le Morte d'Arthur, but the sensationalism drags it down to Monty Python & the Holy Grail level. (Which I love the Monty Python version, but Excalibur is supposed to be serious.) Though it's much, much better than First Knight, so it has that going for it.

But Bush didn't travel anywhere except to his family homes at Crawford and Kennebunkport, Camp David on weekends, and the occasional state trip overseas.  Bush was probably the least-traveling President we have had.  And as we know, he famously stopped even playing golf after the invasion of Iraq.

The media turned on him when the 9/11 Commission released that PDB about Bin Laden and it was revealed that Bush received it at Crawford and didn't immediately interrupt his "vacation" and rush back to Washington.  And it intensified when Cindy Sheehan and her fellow loons started going to Crawford to protest the war in Iraq.

It's not even apples and oranges to compare Obama's and Bush's travels.  It's more like apples and bowling balls.

129 88 Let's see.  The President is stopping in Florida to urge more Americans to come to Florida...in f*cking AUGUST?  I'm in SW Florida now.  Only europeans come here in the summer, because this is the time of year when they have their holidays (which, for red-blooded Americans, means 'vacation time').  The only Americans who come down here now are either visiting dying relatives or running from the law.  The heat is brutal, and it rains every day.  Hey, Obama, Americans don't vacation in Florida in August.  If they did, you'd be spending 10 days here instead of at Martha's Vineyard.  Duh...

Posted by: joejm65 at August 13, 2010 04:10 PM (DRcw3)

Seriously.  I went to Panama City Beach over Labor Day last year, only because my dad died.  It was horribly hot and it poured on Labor Day for his funeral.  Would not go near the place before October or after May otherwise.  (October and April are especially nice.)  The only other people who go there in August are poor rednecks from Alabama who can't afford it when the weather is better.  They have had a wilting heat wave and drought there this summer.

They also hate Obama.  Don't know why the geniuses in the White House decided to send him there.  It may kill Allen Boyd's slim chance of pulling out his Congressional race too.  Hehehehe

This sounds like Clinton-era word-parsing. The fact is President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden have both praised the new Kenyan constitution, which legalized abortion. Obama told the Kenyan Broadcasting Corporation the pro-abortion document represented a “singular opportunity to put the government of Kenya on a more solid footing.” On another occasion, Joe Biden told a Kenyan audience it would “deepen the roots of your democracy.” Ironically, he added the pro-abortion constitution would also “unleash the energy of the youth.”
The advocacy was borderline criminal and thatÂ’s being generous. The State Department is circling the wagons
.

If Kenya is writing a constitution to the approval of Dear Leader, then they've screwed themselves before they even start.  Kenya will end up like every other corrupt African nation or the US.  This just goes to show that God has given all of mankind numerous chances to become free and prosperous, but every time people refuse to take the responsibility to maintain it.  Sad.  But I think the US will become Kenya (or worse) in a few years.  There's too many people in this nation that just don't care.

161 cdr m, the poster upthread makes a great point (Lorien, I think): You want to remake THIS version specifically because THIS version used O Fortuna, and the movie without that is nothing. You want to remake this version just to use that kickass song. Which was not written for the film, of course, but you can't re-use it without saying you're doing a remake and buying rights.

By the way,  Ramadan,  with it's FASTING requirement,  just started.

That has to be it.  And I'm serious when I say that.

164 Okay. So there is precedence for a "birth week". The selfish older sister on the Nickelodeon show "Victorious" has a birth week. Not surprised that Obama has one, too. (sorry for the TV reference. I have little ones still at home and they LOVE them some Nick, at least, what I let them watch of it.)

165 I remember back in the day when I got to take a vacation twice a year.  Me and about 150 of my closest friends would fly to Holy Loch Scotland every 6 months or so and take a nice cruise on a nuclear powered, nuclear armed 400 ft long Winnebago that didn't have any windows.

Ah...those were the days.....

Heh.  In the Orthodox Church, it's the fast of the Dormition of the Mother of God.  And a Friday.

But since it's also the beginning of Ramadan, I think we'll have ham.

172 Watch for an unusual number of workers comp claims from AP staffers.  There appears to be a lot of heavy lifting going on over there.
