Are Liberals Pretty Much Writing Off Ohio This Year?
— DrewM

Ohio is one of the classic swing/battle ground states. For liberals to be writing off the Buckeye state in September...well that means things are really bad for them around the country. Really, really bad.

First consider PPP's Twitter note this morning.

Seems strange saying this but really doubt we'll poll Ohio again this cycle

That was striking enough but then there's this from Marc Ambinder at The Atlantic "A Democratic Bloodbath in Ohio?"

In Ohio, it's getting so bad for Democrats that the Democratic Governors Association, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee are actively weighing their level of commitment.

Public and private polling from the state suggests that Democrats will lose the governor's mansion, currently held by Ted Strickland, the Senate race (for an open seat that was held by a Republican), and at least four House races (OH 01, OH 15, OH 13, OH 16). Strickland's troubles have surprised some Democrats, since he's seemed to defy gravity for much of the year.

All 4 of those endangered House Democratic incumbents (Driehaus, Kilroy, Sutton, Boccieri) voted for the health care bill. That's clearly not the only factor in their troubles but it's not the lifeline Democratic leaders claimed it would be either (more like an anchor around their necks).

In the Senate race, the RCP average has Rob Portman up by 9. In the Governor's race it's former Congressman and FNC host John Kasich by almost 11.

These are devastating numbers in a swing state like Ohio. If the national committees do pull back or even out entirely, it's because they've essentially decided to build their firewall around, I don't know, Pelosi's district.

As always, this doesn't mean we can let up. It means we're just a step closer to seeing the Democrats vanquished and hearing the lamentations of their women.

There was a leftist douchebag in the west-university SWPL shopping hangout yesterday. He was advocating peace and military cuts of course. But he ADVERTISED it as "cutting spending". That tells me that even in this Berkeley colony, the leftist child-stalkers are having to appeal to concern about the budget. That is, the local kids don't care about the usual SWPL bullshit the way they did.

No one seems to be talking about those races. I'm a little discouraged that the Rep/Dem ratio for Gov., for example:

O'Malley = 466,207
Ehrlich = 206,839

But then I looked at the 2006 primary and that's actually a little better:

O'Malley = 524,671
Ehrlich = 213,744

I figure Rep primary #s are so much less b/c most cons. leaning voters are registered independents. Also, Ehrlich had an also ran, Murphy, to go against.

Ohio, Kentucky and Florida were supposed to be "inplay" to hurt our chances at flipping 10. NO THEY WEREN'T AND NO THEY ARENT. We are on a march of epic proportions- rumors of a Democratic pullout stretching from the Philly suburbs west to the Misssippi. Michigan's governor race is laughable. Wisconsins is about to be. The entire midwest is shaking off Democrats like a gaggle of ticks. The trick here is to fill the vacuum and EXPAND. What does a virus do? It infects a cell and uses it to make more viruses to spring on cells nearby. Do that in Pennsylvania-Ohio-Indiana-Illinois, and a 1-state spread out to WV/MD/KY/MO/IA/MN/WI/MI/NJ/NY/DE is easy as shit. Whitman is spending millions on DOWNTICKET races and GOTV in California- so much so that 3 of the 4 most vulnerable Dem-held seats are tossups, 1 leaning into that (#47,11,20, and 18 respectively). Turn Southern California into an operative base (very easy with the anti-Dem anger in the Inland Empire, San Diego and LA Suburbs and its a 3 hr drive to Arizona and Nevada- another 4 potential house seats there and a vulnerable Senate Majority leader. Consume, defeat, expand, repeat.

I believe the last time there was a redistricting (gerrymandering) he was the low man on the totem pole of shit so he pretty much got the leftovers.  It's mostly on the West Side of Cleveland (although it contains Slavic Village which is on the Southeast side and I guess was considered to ethnically sketchy to include in the "black" district which Stephanie Tubbs Jones had and now Marcia Fudge is the rep) along with Lakewood and a few other west side suburbs.  It's pretty much an economic shithole that's never recovered since steel and auto production left the area.  Kucinich of course keeps telling the simple fucks that he's fighting to bring the jobs back to the union humps even though he's never done anything to help create a private sector job; in fact he turned down some possible deals and tried pawning it off as "I can't be bought off by special interests" and the commie dumbasses keep buying it.  I thought for sure his ass was toast the last time but it turned out there were too many people opposing him in the primary and they split too much of the vote; I'm positive he received far under 50% in the primary.  There are no fucking Repubs that can win in the area so the primary is *really* the general election.

If you believe this from Daniel Henninger's WSJ article, I think you can draw the conclusion that the country desperately wants the R's to step up and lead.  The R's are the preferred choice, if they'll be conservative.  The flirtation with the demos in '06 & '08 was mainly out of frustration with R's acting like demos.

W/O Dio and OD, we need to win 84% of the Dem seats. Doable based on wave election patterns. W/ those two, we only need to win 72% of the races. Very doable. I think I need to change all of that because I wasn't given the opportunity to become a powerful billionaire. Eternal vigilance.  It is important not to take those "safe" seats for granted, like Castle took his "safe" nomination for granted.  That said, probably all that needs to be done in those districts is to run a competent campaign and keep an eye out for signs of strange trouble brewing (like October surprises).

That's disgusting Dash!  I mean, here you are with one of the richest languages in the world - there are five different words for EVERYTHING and you struggle for words?

I think it maintains beat of the lymric poetic form better like this:

There once was a Senator Harry,

 Whose favorite pet Coon was a fairy.

Said Coons with a grin as he wiped off his chin,

 "After you comes President Barry."

As you said, the last line struggles.  Your main theme, Coons as a subserviant cock-sucker, should be extended and works better when he is further tied into President Obama.

"that'll be three fitty."  Just breaks the whole rythm.

270 @258

In almost every case I would say no (as somebody familiar with New York) especially considering the machine stuff Cuomo/Gilli and others will have going.  However, ever since that Suozzi thing in LI, I've started to have second thoughts.  If they can get some momentum and we can actually have a good margin upstate I think NY might be a state to keep an eye on.

There's no reason they shouldn't take the senate this year (the NY state one).  With 30+ or so gov's after this cycle, the next set of redistricting maps should be incredibly helpful.  Not only does it give us a better in built advantage in the house but making already dem districts even deeper blue makes their local races even more a foregone conclusion and depresses turnout from what it could be.

out of the O'Donnell supporters/tea partiers I would say that about 70+ % are somewhat tolerant of having moderates especially when considering alternatives and the pvi situation they face.  Unfortunately that >30% are louder despite being more illogical.

By the way, Silver's model rates the chances of the Ohio house seats flipping as follows:

OH-16  84%
OH-01  81%
OH-15  74%
OH-18  49%
OH-13  22%

Donate/volunteer to make calls/etc however you want based on that. (At this point I prefer aiming for the less probable ones)

295 There's clearly a good deal of us that fall on both sides of that line. And I doubt there's going to be much agreement where that line is. It might not be about Castle/O'Donnell but that's a great case study.

See, that's what worries me. So, in the grand scheme of things, it may not matter that the libs wrote-off Ohio, if we decide to just give it to them. But I really don't know.

Texas (my state) is another example. Perry is running against Dem Bill White, former mayor of Houston. I know some conservatives who are voting for White because they can't stand Perry, or who aren't voting at all. While the role of the governor in this state isn't as strong as it is in others, I'd hate to turn it over to a man like White, who has even bigger socialist tendencies than Perry. (White is also an Obama lover.)

I would like to see a poll of AoSHQ as to what matters more (long-term), purity or a majority. Let's say we get a high number of conservatives, but a low amount of Rs, not even enough for a fillibuster. Is it better to have people that can speak-out against the President & his gang of socialist tools, or people who can actually do something about it?

Or something we haven't thorougly considered-- Washington changes everyone, so what happens when a conservative who we elected takes a position we don't like? Is there tolerance for disagreement, so long as it's not something hardcore socialist?

305 #293 - Miss80sBaby... In a way, you are setting up a false scenario in assuming the choice is between a vigorous Conservative party and electoral success. History shows that the opposite is true - Republicans do better when there is an actual problem to be solved - war, bad economy, whatever. When the timeservers start to take over, the party does worse.

Yes, Washington does change people, and I think voters need to increase the bar for someone who has been in place a while so he needs to remain in tune with the needs of the day.  And the more we limit the growth and pervasiveness of the government, the less draw it will have to spend 50 years there.

315 I might add that of the 10 "swing" states there have been only 4 surgers in their standings: Kirk in Illinois from -1 to +1.8 Raese in West Virginia from -14 to -8 Fiorina in California from -5 to -2 McMahon in Connecticut from -15 to -6 All 4 of them have been hammering their opponents as too liberal on taxes. As too quick to expand government. As too quick to rely on the liberal way. Yes, KIRK did that too- and its the only thing that turned the race back towards him in polling. The rule here is no longer to run to the middle- it is to run to the RIGHT. Kirk, McMahon, Raese and Fiorina win their states by pulling the anti-establishment, anti-sameoldsameold conservatives and indies to their side, instead of running to the moderate wing to "win votes". Even the most liberal of all of these guys and gals is trying to run to the DeMint side, not the Graham-Snowe-Collins side.

I understand.  Part of this past week was still within primary season.  Then, after the final results of Tuesday night, there's been a day or two of adjusting to the shock (some shocked that their candidate lost, some shocked that their candidate won).

At this point, it's time to shake hands and put aside the intraparty differences and debates.  There will be plenty of time after Nov. 2 to revisit those and whip them back up into a frenzy.  Right now, since we have the candidates we have and no one has a time machine with which to change them, let's put our focus from now through Nov. 2 on getting this crop elected.

333 Meanwhile, we need to push-back against the narrative that the Dems are responsible for the tax cuts, as San Fran Nan has started claiming. I wonder how long they're going to run with that meme.

Too long for a John Ryan post Ed Anger.  If you want to successfully sockpuppet the troll you've got to remember their standard post length.  John Ryan/denny crane can't write a post over three sentences long, let alone 4 paragrpaghs

Not if you're from Cinti, it ain't

I am ...and it is

Let me weigh in on this heady issue.  Cincinnati is abbreviated to Cinti.  Nobody calls it that.  The locals call it Cincy.   There was a political taxpayer funded anti litter campaign that used this slogan, "Don't trash the Nati."   It could be an inner city thing but  I have never heard anyone use that.

We have another more localized pronunciation war. We have a small community called Mariemont.  Many folks outside the comunity pronounce it marie mont.  The locals say Mary mont and don't appreciate the mispronunciation.

beedubya, Your from Cincinnati?  Are you still local?  Are you gonna show tomorrow?

Why can't we have the same kind of peacemaking between the Pragmatists and the Purists?

339 "There has NEVER been a Republican elected in that district"

Not true.  Martin Hoke was elected in 1992 (beating a corrupt Dem) and re-elected in 1994.  Kucinch beat him in 1996.

That said, I see nothing to indicate Kucinch is at risk.

LA gets 111 million in stimulus and creates 55 jobs with it.

(1 trillion divided by 100 million) X50 = 50 thousand.

So extrapolation from LA, we might have created 50 thousand jobs in the entire nation?  At the cost of a trillion dollars?

That seems to be a raw deal.

347 I would have bet my first born that Ohio would not go for Obama in 2008. I lived there for 10 years, I thought I had it dialed. "No way" I thought. Ohioans are smarter than that! Well I was wrong and a lot of people that gave Obama the benefit of the doubt have realized their heinous error.   Another benefit is that conservatives will be out in force in 2012. Adios Sherrod Brown. Hola one step closer to a 60 seat majority
