— Dave in Texas Yes. We are weary of him.
In a year we've endured the sublime rhetoric of his awesomeness, his amazing ability to do absolutely nothing, his appointments, his speeches, his appeals to his mandate.
And we've already grown tired of him. We Americans I mean. In one year.
In my lifetime, I have not witnessed this particular type of popularity cratering since Jimmy Carter. When Carter actually began to govern, with his milquetoast "sweater" admonitions and style, the nation cooled to him faster than penguins on ice.
He is still appealing to his personality and amazingness, to pass the most godawful piece of legislation to hit the pike, perhaps even as a "hey Hillary, here's how it's done" ramshackle FU to the majority of Americans who want no part of this garbage.
Ace has mentioned my concern, that given this confluence of events, the opposition is taking the long view, and the long view is "pass this piece of shit, it secures our future".
I would like to be wrong. I've been wrong twice today.
Don't think I'm wrong about this though.

I remember watching the debacle that was the DNC nomination of Kerry for president in 2004. Obama made a speech. I thought to myself, there is the 2008 presidential candidate for the Democrats. The people loved him.

The American people have been trained to believe that whatever they don't immediately and overwhelmingly like will be removed and replaced right away - TV series get cancelled after two episodes or even one, movies go straight to DVD based on audience tests, products get pulled off store shelves in weeks or days and get remaindered.
Unfortunately, Presidents are no deposit, no return items. We're pretty much stuck for the rest of his term, unless he does something so egregious that it rises to the level of high crimes and misdemeanors - and even then, there's little chance that the Senate would ever convict even if the House impeached.
On one hand, that gives Obama a chance to undergo a Clintonesque conversion to centrism. On the other, since Obama is a socialist to the bone marrow, it's far more likely he's just going to keep pushing ineffectually for more and bigger government and a weaker America. And we won't be able to change the channel.

If they come up with a much smaller proposal, that would mean that both houses of congress would have to pass it fresh, wouldnÂ’t it? Or could it be that the senate wonÂ’t have to pass the new bill, instead using reconciliation to pare it down?
Either way, itÂ’s not going to play well with the Peeps. We have to assume that the White House is expecting things to be bad for Democrats in the fall, so they donÂ’t think they can make it much worse by fully expressing the USSR tendencies.

We might be pointing a 44 mag at their face but I'm not so quick to say they don't have the nads to take ours away. Even at the expense of a decade or so of minority. The hard lefties know it, they get this thing passed, we may beat them back for a while but the next generation is the last generation of free Americans, because when they get the majority next time it will be all over and our transition to a state structured society will be completed.

Why are the Democrats so committed to taking over health care? The web of dependency theyÂ’ve created in order to keep themselves in power is crushing us. They want to escape responsibility, and they want to keep the scam alive.
The taxpayer is sold out in order to fund the partnership between the Democrats and the unions. Our elected officials don’t try to fix the problem – for obvious reasons. They just keep coming to us for more money to keep the scam going.
Effectively, the politicians are using our money to finance their reelection bids, as they sell us out to their union pals.
Good luck on Medicare too. That program is bankrupt too. All courtesy of the party of compassion.

Yeah, that probably has a lot to do with it within the demographic that goes to College Dems meetings for the hookups and the drugs, but I think a lot of the disillusionment among the more faithful is because he doesn't appear to have the balls to get anything done.
In other words, as countless other commentators have said, there's no energy because his statist asshole balls aren't big enough to ram his agenda down our throats. Students (and, no doubt, professors) thought they had a mandate from heaven after the election, and were losing bladder control over the prospect of being the change they wished to see in the world, or whatever.
If Obama had gotten health care reform wrapped up in August, or had signed a Cap and Trade bill last year, I'm sure the student organizers would still be organizing their Drum Circles for Change to this day.

He truly is "unprecedented". Ask yourself this; what would people have said and done 50 years ago if an elected President had appointed know Communists to White House offices.
President Truman (who was in office when I initially came down the pike) went to great links to discredit McCarthy and his Communist accusations because it would have been his deathknell.
He would have been impeached by the Democratic congress. That is how far to the left we have come since I have been around.
As I said earlier, maybe this will be the break-point and the Republicans can get to a 60 seat majority in the Senate and a huge majority in the House AND keep it for a 100 years.

Smokers, drinkers, and efficient metabolizers are denied medical treatmenst, state agents go into houses to see what's in the fridge, parents who pack "bad" lunches get a visit from the state, babies are confiscated at birth by the state if the parents have run afoul of the lifestyle police.

Yeah,
this one needs to be beaten down. All the stops need to be pulled; this IS the hill that is worth dying on.
I strongly believe that once legislation like this is passed, it never goes away. And I think the Dems know that it's better to ask for forgiveness later than to let this chance go away. Everyone says there will be a huge uprising and backlash if this is passed. I'm not so sure. Everyone is sick to death of it, of hearing about it, and of fighting it. People may be getting angrier, but maybe some are ready to throw up their hands.
The MSM would laud passage of the bill as a great accomplishment. Whatever tiny crumbs are in the bill about malpractice or crossing state lines would be portrayed as gracious concessions and evidence of bi-partisanship by a strong President trying to do the right thing.
Our side would bitch and moan, loudly for sure; but to try to repeal it when the MSM is presenting the Republican position as trying to overturn good, socially conscious legislation that was passed after a hard but fair and square fight? Not so easy. And do we really trust the 52% who elected him not to change their minds again and decide, "Gee, what was everyone so mad about, anyway? He's a good guy, it's not all that bad."
Kill it now, burn it, and salt the earth from where it came.

If conservatives think there is strategic wisdom in allowing liberals to pass any (liberal) form of healthcare legislation, one need only remember the rationale for TARP was roughly "we must deny conservative principles to preserve conservativism." That muddy logic appears to have worked out pretty good so far, huh?
Posted by: DCox at March 01, 2010 03:34 PM (jzNfC)
Nope, not weary. Tired of him? Yes; his near daily "get up in their faces" approach to his elected role is tiresome, so is the incessant vomit of bad, badder, baddest news -- it can wear a person out to be sure.
That's why it's always good to take a break from it for a while -- go out and do something worthwhile, enjoyable, interesting. I think I've read more in the past year and a half than I have in a very long time thanks to needing a break from the world (or at least the news); I've done more work around the house and barn too, and plan on walking more when the weather gets better. So I suppose in a bit of inverted logic this has all been good for me, even though this is a horrible, horrible time.
Everybody gets so wrapped up in the coming, inevitable crash and burn -- you can't look away from it but you can't really do much about it either and your mind races. That's what wears a person down so much. That's what makes them eventually despair. That should not be...it will take better than the likes of this fellow to destroy everything; where there is life, there's hope -- there may not be much, but there is still some life in this country yet (a wink, a smile, a kiss on the forehead, and "chin up" folks).

This, I think, is a much more drastic popularity "tanking" - the nation cooled to Jimmah Carter, but as I recall (and I was in middle school when he was in office) it was more of an ambivalent dislike. The skid-fest that has been the Obama administration has been much more polarizing. People LOATHE him. People see him more and more for what he is, and they are disgusted by the "damn the American people, full speed ahead" management style of his Chicago posse. Carter was an intellectual who had no leadership or management skills. The Won is a person of average intelligence (maybe - although I'm not convinced he's not just the Dem's idiot du jour) who has no leadership, management, or job skills.
Yes, I am weary of him. I am sick to death of him, and his Chicago buds, and San Fran Nan, and Pa Kettle Reid, and Bawney Fwank...and on and on.
