I live in Northern California.  I moved up here a long time ago.  I told some older gentleman in San Diego that I was moving up here and he said to me, "Thats where all the Hippies went!"  He wasn't kidding.

My mortgage is so low it's silly, maybe even less than your car payment (nope, I don't have a car payment either). Life is good in Flyover Country, and we have cookies. The catch: the job market isn't as diverse in smaller cities in Flyover Country as in bigger cities in California, of course. If your career/skill set isn't TOO dependent on location, I can't see why it'd be so hard to leave. But then, I've moved a million times so relocating isn't a big deal to me. 56 Curiously, my prediction about California is going in the opposite direction most think, for reasons most haven't yet sorted out. 

In the last election, the voters changed the budget process so only a simple majority in the legislature is needed to pass a budget, down from 2/3s.   Sounds goofy, but while this is undoubtably a short term problem, in the long term what has happened is tax and spend politicians have put a big bulls eye on their back.  The 2/3s majority rule buffered the voters from their silliness.  Hell, want to make a big change, make it 40% needed to pass and see what happens...   There may be even fewer tax and spenders elected...  

Kind of wierd, but that's the nature of unintended consequences.  Want proof?  Last year, the WA state, Democrat legislature used some emergency loop hole to vote out the 2/3s necessary to raise taxes, then put in place a wide variety of tax increases.  This election cycle, those tax increases, plus an income tax proposal got voted down, and the (somewhat disorganized/ineffective) WA GOP started to make some inroads in the State Legislature.  The shit in WA is expected to hit the fan in January when the still Democrat controlled government has to figure out how to balance it's budget, pay all it's big union contracts, it's bloated welfare state all without all the big tax increases it had passed and hoped for in the last session AND without any bailout $$$$$ from the 'other' WA with it's GOP controlled house....

Liberalism is all about taking advantage of the circuit margin built into our society. Liberals seem to believe that if you run the power supply at 6.99 volts everything is OK. Well, it is not OK, a tiny amount of electrical noise could push you above the 7.00 volt threshold and you get massive - sparks flying - failures everywhere.

Eventually Liberalism uses up all of the circuit margin in a society and you have a catastrophic failure.The election of Jerry Brown may be the last thing that brings California to the maximum stress limits any society can handle. Add in the inevitable earth quake and this entire economy built on the side of a mountain can mudslide into default. When California shorts out, the cascade failure is going to be spectacular: housing values will plummet; hundreds of billions of dollars will be lost virtually overnight -  the state will collapse into something which will make the great depression look like a family picnic. There will be food riots - looting and fires. Basically California is going to resemble a third world country in the middle of a revolution.

When that happens the rest of us have to resist our natural instinct to help someone in trouble. It will be sad to watch California go from being the shining movie star of the world to being the crazy bag lady state but there is no saving it. If we try, we will simply pull the rest of the country down with it. A short circuit has to be cut off by circuit breakers or everything will burn up. Liberals and progressives have to be confronted with the absurdity of their thought processes and have their noses rubbed in it - or else they will destroy us all.

If you live in California and are a sane person - you need to sell your property and quietly moon walk out of the state before the inevitable happens. When the collapse comes it will be too late to save yourself.

This just saddens me. I lived there, liked it, had one hell of a time, but I realized that it was time to go. I missed California, but seeing what is happening to that state I'm certainly glad I left.

My sister is the CFO for an agricultural company in Bakersfield, since Jerry Brown's win, the company has been exploring selling off the land or even letting it just sit there, they aren't sure if they can sell the crops for enough to make it profitable. Ag is one of the last things propping that state up, if it goes things will spiral out of control fast.

Right now the state is nominally giving Washington more than its paying in income taxes. It also has a fine submarine base in San Diego. But its borrowing $40 million a day in UI claims from the federal treasury and Sacramento is insolvent. They could balance things by raising the state income tax 100%. But they won't...and they won't quit raiding their cash flow stream for their spending until they are actually broke. Another 150 miles will converted to gravel, and the rest will be "allowed to fail" over the next 10 years. The county transportation agency said the roads today are worth 2.5 billion dollars. They are on their way to being worth nothing. The state is virtually bankrupt. It's continuing operation is a smoke and mirrors affair. I'm expecting it to crash and burn in the next year or two.

The electronics industry went from productive hardware manufacture to "creative" graphic arts. Leftist gayness, once confined to San Francisco, spread its spores up and down the state. (Nope, I don't care about private lives, but I do care about the kind of public policy that always seems to come from it).

Victor Davis Hanson describes the California of today: "The state will continue to descend into a pyramidal society. On top there is the wealthy, leftist coastal elite from Napa to Hollywood, which is seemingly immune from the effects of high taxes and regulation (and wants more "green" laws, gay marriage, abortion, and therapeutic bromides). The top of the pyramid is in league with a growing underclass dependent upon a huge entitlement industry; this coalition thus favors more taxes, entitlements, unionized public employees, open borders, etc. Meanwhile, a squeezed middle-class private sector is slowly being strangled, shutting down, and leaving."
