Awesome: Giant Mosque/Islamic Community Center Going Up Near Ground Zero
— DrewM

Of course it's to promote peace and tolerance and not serve as some sort of stealth victory monument or anything.

"This is a place which is 600 feet from where almost 3,000 people were torn to pieces by Islamic extremists," said Debra Burlingame, whose brother died in the attack on the Pentagon that day.

"I think that it is incredibly insensitive and audacious really for them to build a mosque, not only on that site, but to do it specifically so that they could be in proximity to where that atrocity happened," said Burlingame, who is co-founder of 9/11 Families for a Safe and Strong America.

The 13-story mosque and cultural center will be built on the site of a four-story building that was a Burlington Coat Factory retail store until 9/11, when part of a plane's landing gear crashed through the roof. The building, which will be razed, currently houses a mosque.

...Though the Cordoba Initiative's website calls part of the $100 million-plus project a mosque, its founder, Imam Rauf, says the project is not a mosque but a community center for all faiths that will include recreational facilities, a prayer space and a 500-seat theater that can be a part of the neighborhood's trendy Tribeca Film Festival.

Rauf insists the effort is meant to help heal the wounds of 9/11, "We've approached the community because we want this to be an example of how we are cooperating with the members of the community, not only to provide services but also to build a new discourse on how Muslims and non-Muslims can cooperate together to push back against the voices of extremism."

But Dr. Zuhdi Jasser, president of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy, says there are more productive ways to fight Islamic extremism.

"Even when they have the resources, they are using it for a place of worship, a cultural center for organizations," he said. They are not using it for a counterterrorism research center.

"They are not using it to lead the war like Americans need to see us do and they are wasting our resources, not to mention that being close to the hallowed ground that is so sensitive in the souls of the families of 9/11. I think it is extremely poor judgment."

Here's an idea, if Rauf is so interested in trying to "push back against the voices of extremism", why doesn't he open his mosque/community center in Saudi Arabia or Pakistan? Those are the places where this alleged hijacking of Islam is taking place. Go there and show the people running the Islamic purity police or the madrassas the error of their ways. Help to bring them into the 21st century world where people are supposed to respect one another and coexist.

The very fact that there were not riots and wanton killing of Muslims after 9/11 or any of the other Islamic attacks here shows we Americans pretty much have this tolerance thing covered. If Rauf is so damn worried about the future go where the next set of killers are and put them on the right path. Allow me to offer Rauf a bit of assistance in this noble mission...they aren't in lower Manhattan and they aren't learning about Islam as a tile in some post-modern American mosaic.

I'm rather fed up with the assumption that it America that needs to be reached out to, that it's American that must accept others. We get it, we do it.

Ground Zero is sufficient testament to the influence of Islam in the modern world, we don't need a mega-mosque next door to remind us.

Speaking of which...Lt. Col Allen West (USA Ret.) and candidate for Congress, was asked at a symposium awhile back about the nature of the enemy we face. While others on the panel stammered, Col. West got right to it: It's the Islam, stupid.

Are they going to let men and women of different faiths pray there?  Are they going to let men and women of different faiths be in the same room together?  Just, you know, asking.

Has the world truly gone insane?

Yuppers.

9 In a sane world the electrical contractor making the lowest bid on this job would be an FBI front company and the entire place would be so "wired for sound" that a mouse wouldn't be able to fart inside or on the grounds without being captured on tape down at 26 Federal Plaza. Fat chance of that happening.

There is yet another really, really disturbing element to this ...

You know damned well that this huge mosque will be completed long before the new WTC does. Thus a huge dominant muslim symbol will tower over a big gaping hole that islam created.

This bothers me to no end.

I don't know, morons, if that's the case, this isn't a Wahhabi monument so much as a muslim middle finger to Al Q.

I'm genuinely torn now whether this is something good or bad.

37 If Rauf wants peace and understanding between cultures, why not agitate to allow a synagogue or Christian church to be built in Mecca --or anywhere in Saudi Arabia, for that matter? Posted by: logprof We lived in Saudi, and had to worship underground. There was always the fear of repercussions for playing Christian music in your car/house, being in a group of Christians, and hoping the Mutawwa didn't find out (and they tried). Many people were caught worshipping as Catholics, Protestants, Mormons, and were jailed, deported or disappeared. The hypocrisy of the Saudis and Muslims in general (see yesterday's post on the girl saying she wants another Holocaust) is mind-boggling to rational folk. The problem is, the enemy we fight isn't rational, and doesn't adhere to the rules. They will do or say anything to win-even if it takes years. Col. West recognizes this.

What's more disgraceful, more deplorable and more despicable about that than the Viet Nam War Memorial in Washington, D.C.; a "V" for victory by the North Vietnamese; the design for which was by a (very liberal) Chinese-American woman who was an activist in the anti-war movement. The same complacency that we're witnessing with the shenanigans of the Obama Administration, and the same failure of the liberal MSM to report a story in its proper context.

Posted by: Dianne & Brian at May 14, 2010 10:35 AM (ITzbJ)

43 44- I didn't realize she was an anti-war activist. Where did you find the information about her? And again, why wasn't this brought out during her bid to create the monument?

Posted by: mokimoki at May 14, 2010 10:41 AM (IrV7s)

44 I donÂ’t like the idea of Jap tourists at Pearl Harbor or muslim visitors to Ground Zero in NYC. ItÂ’s like the perpetrator returning to the scene of the crime.

Posted by: SFC MAC at May 14, 2010 10:48 AM (RPkOk)

45 why wasn't this brought out during her bid to create the monument?

It came up, as well as much complaining that the monument lacked the soaring uplift that most associated with a war memorial.

On the plus side, if she was trying to dick us, she failed utterly, and managed to produce an emotionally moving masterpiece about self-sacrifice and duty.  Its gripping in the same way Arlington Cemetery or Flanders is, but instead of crosses, row on row, its names, seemingly endless names.  Names of young lives lost, of futures never experienced.

It takes a heart of stone not to weep there.

Posted by: damian at May 14, 2010 10:52 AM (4WbTI)

46 47-I absolutely agree about the beauty of the monument. It is breathtaking and humbling to see all of those names. We took our kids when they were little, and even they understood the solemnity of the place. It's also one of their favorite monuments in DC. I was out of the country when the bid for the monument was awarded, so I don't remember any of the details-that's why I asked.

I visited Pearl Harbor in '99. There were lots of Japanese tourists at the USS Arizona but not so much at the USS Missouri.

Now the Missouri was a new attraction at that point and may not have made it on to the tour lists yet or you know, there were other reasons. I wonder what it's like now.

Posted by: DrewM. at May 14, 2010 10:59 AM (9B5OK)

48 We took our kids when they were little, and even they understood the solemnity of the place.

It's an amazing phenomenon. I've seen packs of loud, skate boarding teens going about their day in the clueless way kids do suddenly turn serious and respectful.

I've seen whiny, bratty kids suddenly go quiet without any prompting from their parents.

It's like there's an invisible line and on some level it reaches everyone...this ground is different. It's an almost visceral, unconscious reaction.

I'm not sure what the (at the time) young woman's motivations were but we owe her a debt of gratitude for what she gave physical form to.

This is the message I left at the Cordoba Initiative website:

You want to “improve” muslim-West relations? Leave the country. Your Islam is diametrically opposed to Western culture and values. Your terrorist activities are incorporated into your religion, as proscribed by Mohammad in his 7th Century screed.  Building a mosque anywhere in the U.S., especially within range of the 9/11 attack sites, is a slap in the face of America.

The premise of Islam leaves no room for tolerance of any other religion. Islam by nature, is a violent, misogynist, anti-Christian, anti-Semitic philosophy. We do not have to be inclusive of a brutal religious sect that declared war against the West in  692 AD, and has a goal of a world Caliphate.  Tell you what Khan and friends, when Saudi Arabia allows a church to be built in Riyadh, you might have some credence.  Until then: Allah u Fuckbar.

On a side note:

And to the assclowns in the NYC Community Board who approved this shit: Take a good look at your skyline. See anything missing?

You can say that. You weren't there. You were out playing while good men were dying in Viet Nam.

I suspect that survivors of the World Trade Center masacre will view a Muslim Mosque on that location the same way that [informed] Viet Nam Veterans view that Memorial in Washington, D.C.; just another betrayal by complacent, clueless, obtuse, shallow, narcissistic and blissfully ignorant Americans.

But hey, I don't hold it against you.

My husband is a veteran, many of the posters here are either veterans or the spouses, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles of veterans. No one here has EVER made derogatory comments about servicemen and women, or thinks that any of the brilliant men and women who serve in the military deserve nothing less than our gratitude and thanks for a job well done. So please don't come in here and crap on us. And for the record, I was in elementary school during the Viet Nam war, my dad landed at Normandy, and I and my husband served in the first Gulf War (he has subsequently served in Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan. ) So don't give me any shit about not caring for soldiers.

59 I would be willing to contribute to a fund that has the following goals: 1) provide a supply of "victory bacon" somewhere between ground zero and this mosque. What people do with their subsidized pork products is entirely up to them. In fact maybe, in the interests of harmony, we should put a sign up to the effect of "It would be intolerant to throw this product, which is considered unclean by Muslims, at the giant mosque three blocks up the street" 2) some time in the next year bribe the security company at the job site to look the other way in the middle of the night while a large, fire is started. I'm not looking to kill anyone, just enough to delay the opening ceremonies by 3-4 months. Bonus points if lard is used as the accelerant.

76 Why the "Cordoba Center"?  From the wikipedia entry on Cordova, Spain:

"the old town contains many impressive architectural reminders of when Qurṭuba (قرطبة , the thriving capital of the Caliphate of Córdoba, governed almost all of the Iberian peninsula. It has been estimated that in the latter half of the tenth century Córdoba, with up to 500,000 inhabitants, was then the most populated city in Europe and, perhaps, in the world."

In other words, they see this as their base in the new most populated city in the world, and (they hope) the capital of the new caliphate.  This place needs to get struck by a little "Sicilian lightning".
