Awwwww- US Won't Get To Host World Cup Anytime Soon
— DrewM

Ok, not the biggest news story but it allows me to mock two of my least favorite things in the world...soccer and the Obama administration.

First the soccer.

The tiny desert nation of Qatar beat out the United States as the 2022 World Cup host, with FIFA brushing aside doubts about blistering heat to bring soccer's showcase event for the first time to the Middle East.

The 22 voters on FIFA's executive committee, some accused of corruption in the weeks leading up to their meeting, picked Russia to stage the 2018 tournament, another first-time host.

Qatar, an oil-rich nation that has been independent since 1971, has a population of about 1.7 million -- 500,000 less than Houston. At 4,416 square miles, it is smaller than Connecticut.

"We go to new lands," FIFA president Sepp Blatter said.

Qatar, which has promised to overcome heat of up to 130 degrees with air-conditioned outdoor stadiums, won out over the U.S., Australia, Japan and South Korea in a secret vote Thursday. Qatar won the final vote 14-8.

A Muslim nation holding a soccer event? Hookers and drunken English hooligans hit hardest.

I mean soccer is bad enough as is but having to watch it without being drunk?
That's just brutal.

Still, I'd like to thank Qatar for taking the World Cup bullet for us. We really owe you guys one.

As for the Obama administration part in this, they sent AG Eric Holder to represent the US. I guess he had plenty of time in his schedule, what with the whole deciding where to try terrorists and dealing with WikiLeaks all under control, why not jet off to Switzerland for a little skiing, er, salesmanship.

Heck of a job Holdie, heck of a job!

Best of all, it's an excuse to play this video....

1 Even better, the air conditioned stadiums in Qatar are going to be carbon neutral. Be interesting to see how that works out.

9 Actually, Qatar makes more sense than the US anyway- Most Muslim countries really like soccer.  Americans?  Mostly not.  I'm not sure why we wanted it in the first place.  The money it brings in can't possibly offset having to deal with 'football' fans from around the world.

And I happen to like soccer, so I'm not just bashing here.

24 I caught this announcement on NPR and was struck by the socialism. Russia made the case that a country that didn't already have stadiums should host so the sport could flourish there afterwards, and Qatar said it will dismantle the stadiums and ship them to poor countries afterwards. I could not help wondering afterwards how long it will be before faster runners are handicapped with weights like in horse racing and so on in the olympics.

Not quite. The Brits didn't make it into the finals. The Irish did. There were stories of Irishman calling home, begging for money to remain in the US when Ireleand made it into the second round. Several cities spent millions on riot gear after watching films of the violence from years past. The Brits didn't show, and neither did the violence. Some of the cities were pissed about how much money was spent for nothing.

P.S. And some building in Orlando with a geodesic dome roof repainted it to look like a soccer ball. Then were pissed when they couldn't get the pain beck off.

57 This is Columbia circa 1979. There is no way Qatar will every be able to handle this. FIFA is just simply milked Arabs for all the cash they can get till it's obvious they won't be able to do it and it gets move to the US.

As to air-conditioning an outdoor stadium it works on the principle that hot air rises and cold air sinks. If you pump cold air into an outdoor stadium enough will stay in the stadium to make it cooler. But that doesn't account for the sun's rays heating stuff up directly. Most likely they would have to play all the games at night which would suit European TV just fine.

Another '94 World Cup story: My father lives in Orlando, and several cousins from Ireland came over for the cup and stayed with him. The Irish were knocked out in the second round, by Holland. He gets a call late at night asking for him to please come pick them up from a bar. My father can hear Dutch voices in the background, and fears that the cousins are calling from a crime scene.
