Barone: Republicans Asking, "Okay, Let's Say We Take The House. Then What?"
— Ace

Is the country ready for Christienomics? Seems like we have to try, whether it's ready or not.

The Robert Redford reference in this snippet is to the movie The Candidate, in which he played an idealistic but wholly unformed protest candidate who unexpectedly won a Senate seat. The movie's last line is Redford asking, "What do I do now?"

There is an assumption in the political world that spending cuts will be unpopular: Americans, it is said, are ideologically conservative but operationally liberal.

But there is some evidence that voters will back governors who cut spending, such as Mitch Daniels, re-elected while Barack Obama was carrying Indiana in 2008, and Bob McDonnell and Chris Christie, elected in Virginia and New Jersey in 2009 and now enjoying good job ratings.

One reason is that as candidates, they let voters know what they would do. There are risks in taking stands. But there are also risks in looking as clueless as Robert Redford.

All I'd add is that the country's mood, as Pat Caddell says, "pre-revolutionary," and if the incoming Republicans think they can get by with more of the same-old, same-old, they're in for a rude awakening.

They will be turned out as well.

They have to do something -- and that means risky things. Things that could easily get them punted out of office by a public that does in fact tell itself it's for smaller government but in fact wants more spending.

But they have to do that just the same. Business as usual will not be tolerated.

They have to bet on change. Dance with the girl that brung ya.

As Jayne Cobb said... "If you can't do something smart, do something right."

hahaha, I just remembered another Classic Hit by Obama.

Remember when Obama put on his fiscal conservative suit and said he'd go through the entire budget, department by department, line by line, and identify all the waste?

He also said he had identified $500B in waste in Medicare. Funny how we don't hear anymore about that.

Why is it that commenters on a friggin blog come up with more political ammo to use against Obama & the Democrats in 10 minutes than the entire GOP has in the last 21 months?

Republicans are too afraid of going outside their comfort zone which is being self-flagellating losers.

Reminds me of the old Frasier episode when he is visited by all his past wives/girlfriends. He finally comes to an epiphany and shouts, "You mean I've been alone because I'm afraid of being alone?"

That's the Republicans. They are afraid of being right because they might be wrong.

Republicans are just plain stupid:

1)  Grow a backbone
2)  Cut taxes - all of them.
2a)  Make sure the Bush Tax Cuts stay on the books and beat the crap out of all democrats who want to raise them.
3)  Stop the reckless spending and bailouts.
4)  Stand up to the corrupt business killing Unions.
5)  Repeal Obamacare - one tax-payer funded chunk at a time
6)  De-fund Obamacare - one tax-payer funded chunk at a time
7)  Repeal all of the democrat government take-overs and horrid strangulating regulations that devastate our economy
Come up with a realistic plan to trim the Obama-debt bomb.
9)  Explain to the folks why it must be done.  Yes - it will be painful, but don't let the corrutpocrats bullshit the argument.  (See #1)
10)  Rinse and repeat.

That's the real answer. A caller into Rove's (Rush's) show today asked the same question and Rove basically gave Ace's answer.

If we win, go balls out and do the right thing and if Obama vetoes everything, hammer him to death about it. There's not much left to do, really.

And as Karl Rove said today when he filled in for Rush, Republicans better offer legislation to cut the budget.  Most likely, Obama will veto them.  But if they don't show they at least tried and build a record of trying, they're going to get kicked out.

If and when the GOP takes control of the House, they take control of all taxation and appropriation bills.  They then are in a great position to pass bills that advance a conservative agenda by proposing pro-growth tax policy and cutting appropriations for wasteful or harmful programs.

That puts the Democrats in the Senate up for re-election in 2012 (and even 2014) in a hard place if they need to demonstrate that they are fiscally responsible, and it forces President Obama to start vetoing bills that may be popular with the electorate.

68 My plan, if anyone was asking

1.  Take the house
2.  Change Appropriations bills to be for specific agencies only and appropriate quarterly. You can't be financially responsible without a finer level of control.
3.  Abort Obamacare; defund even talking about it.
4.  Incorporate useful parts of Energy, Labor, HUD, & Education Departments into Commerce via Appropriations; no fund the rest.
5.  Investigate everything, put every Communist in front of a panel for weeks on end.  It may be wasteful, but guys like Cass, Holdern, and Jennings are doing damage every day we cant see.  Put their asses in a chair, every day, all day.
6.  Order GAO investigations to strictly enforce the Anti-Deficiency Act; slam any Fed caught work beyond the scope or against the letter of their authorized tasks -- CBP here's looking at you
7.  End payroll withholding; or defund the IRS mechanisms to collect it.  Let people get their whole paychecks, and make them write a big check to Uncle Sam every October 31st (then Vote in early November).

They should all be made to listen to the Preamble, with an exhortation to Seize the Day!, every morning they are in session.  They should be reminded daily that they serve at the people's leisure -- not the other way around.  They should be reminded daily that they are expendable -- as expendable as any "Pomeranian fusilier".

49 This and perhaps shoring up adherence to the actual Constitution and support of those who would.  Do that and I would be happy, as it is a good start.

And if they don't allow themselves to be rolled by the senators either (the Maine sisters and their ilk need to have their ears boxed) -- it might shore up those who are limp wristed.

Other than that, they need to be reminded daily that they serve the people, at the people's leisure; that fortune favors the brave, and the brave seize the day; and that they are expendable -- as expendable as the most lowly "Pomeranian fusilier".  Possibly make them listen to a speech covering those tenets as well as the Preamble every single day until they get it right...followed by recitation of the Pledge and their oath.

How about this for an overall spending plan:

We will spend less next year than this year, and we will not spend one penny more until we get into surplus.

83 I was just discussing this very thing with my husband before dinner. I'm ready to burn the whole thing down IF the Republicans don't turn this shit around. I'm. Fed. Up. I went to an event today with a candidate for Governor in my state. It was the same old, same old "I'll create jobs and lower taxes OH and the other guy is a crook" There were no specifics. Nothing but feel good sound bites. After being 2 hours late and offering me nothing but a live version of one of his numerous political commercials... I am just disgusted and pissed off and ready to light a match.

Yeah, get rid of the Main Street project clowns.  Any ostensible Republican who, when the party finally gets control of the government, immediately says: "Jeepers, guys, I think we're being too conservative; we need to become more moderate" should be kept as far as possible from any position where they could decide/influence the decision on anything important, i.e., anything beyond what to have for lunch.

As a bible loving supporter of fully automatic shotguns, I am concerned about this dangereous rhetoric.

Because the GOP is already plotting partisan vitriol, I can no longer support the party of Reagan, who I voted for president 3 times.

If Republicans want my vote, they'll have to prove that they love children and want health care for everyone, the way Obama does.

101 They have to do something -- and that means risky things.

It's all very simple: They talked the talk, so once they gain control they need to walk the walk. Republicans talk up a good game about out-of-control spending and bloated government but when the time comes, the Democrats should be forced into making the lion's share of the compromising. No more McCain-ish reaching-across-the-aisle bullshit.

Republicans are supposed to be the opposition party to Democrats, and it's time they either prove it or get the hell out of the way.

Republicans are supposed to be the opposition party to Democrats, and it's time they either prove it or get the hell out of the way.

And even more important - they need to become the opposition party to the MFM that the Dems depend on for perpetual smooth sailing with no accountability.  It's as easy as 1-2-3.

1. Call out the pollsters who are paid to lie for Democrats for what they are - crooks.

2. Tell the talking airheads who want to play Propaganda Minister, "Fuck You - Next Question!"

3. Tell the people the truth.

104

The GOP needs to learn from its mistakes in 1994.  Let's recount what those mistakes were.

1.  The GOP ignored what its voters actually wanted.

No, they were not voting for the Contract With America, sorry Hannity.  They were specifically voting against Clinton's "assault weapons" ban.  It may surprise you to know that most voters had never even heard of the Contract!

So what did the GOP do?  It put the repeal of the AWB on the back burner, and when it did vote, rejected repealing it.  By doing so, the GOP eliminated the main reason for voting for it.

So why did the GOP say "fuck you" to the gun owners who had supported them?  That brings us to number...

2.  The GOP got hung up on the concept of opposing special interests, instead of following the right policies.

The Democrats managed to get ahold of some sort of quote from Newt Gingrich in which he told the NRA that he would kill any gun control legislation.  The media hyped this up as Newt "doing the bidding of the gun lobby" and made him back down; he eventually not only killed the repeal of the AWB, but got the egregiously unconstitutional ex post facto gun control Lautenberg Amendment passed.

Look, the voters if polled will tell you they hate "special interests."  This means roughly jack shit.  In practice, they hate special interests whose interests conflict with theirs, and they accept special interests whose interests match theirs.  Had Gingrich said, "You're damned right I won't pass gun control legislation," he would have maintained his base of voters.  Instead, the GOP gradually got pulled into the fool's game of trying to purify politics through byzantine and unconstitutional campaign finance laws, which poll well but nobody really cares about.

3.  The GOP passed controversial "bipartisan legislation" during a lame duck session in tandem with outgoing Democrats.

In 1994, that was the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT).  Most conservative economists supported it, and so did Gingrich.  Nevertheless, it was not very popular among the populace, and was hated by the very blue-collar workers who had elected the Gingrich Congress.  Regardless of whether GATT helped or hurt the US economy--and, quite honestly, considering that we're still signing "free trade" treaties almost 20 years later, I have to wonder exactly was so urgent about this "general" one that it couldn't wait till after the new Congress took over--the fact that Newt got it passed during a lame duck session created an angry feeling of betrayal among the voters.

Sound familiar?  WE MUST NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, ALLOW ANY LEGISLATION BE PASSED IN A LAME DUCK SESSION, EVEN--NO, ESPECIALLY, IF IT IS TAGGED AS "CONSERVATIVE" LEGISLATION.

4.  The GOP allowed its "old bulls" to continue in committee assignments--men who were professional traitors for the Democrats--and they continued as traitors.

In Robert A. Heinlein's book Take Back Your Government! he discusses this problem.  Reformers typically would come to power in a city held by a "machine" as candidates of the opposite party.  Unfortunately, the candidates of that party were mostly professional traitors--Heinlein's own term--who were bribed by the machine party to help the machine keep working.  In some cases, the reformers would root out the traitors and fire them from every position possible; in such situations, the reforms were able to take hold.  More often, \however, the traitors, in conjunction with tame media outlets, would convince them to be "adult" and "responsible" and to let "experienced pols" "guide" the reformers.  Of course, they would continue to act as traitors, and usually the reformers were gone within an election or two.

Similarly, the GOP in 1994 originally planned to put young rebels in charge of committee assignments.  Instead, the GOP leadership agreed to let longtime sellouts such as Bob Dole in the Senate and Henry Hyde (a gun control supporter) continue in positions of power.

So what does this mean in 2010 terms?

First, per # 1, we must stick like glue to the issues that win the election for us, and never back down on them.  We must risk everything on repeal of Obamacare--all of it--and kill any and all attempts at amnesty for illegal immigrants.  Period.  No compromises.  If any Republican wants to bail on these issues, we should do anything to hurt and humiliate him, including finding dirt on his family.  It's that fucking important.

Second, per # 2, we need to know how to respond to the special interest charges.  Do not run from such accusations; embrace them in a way that disarms their argument.  If someone says "You're a tool of the NRA," say, "If supporting the right of Americans to defend their families makes me a tool of the NRA, I'm damned proud to be their tool!"  If someone says, "You're a tool of Big Pharma," say, "No, unlike Big Pharma, I want to repeal Obama's socialized medicine."

Third, we need to tell Lindsay Graham and Judd Gregg, NO WAY IN HELL WILL WE LET YOU PASS ANY LEGISLATION IN A LAME DUCK CONGRESS.  IF IT'S AS "CONSERVATIVE" AS YOU SAY IT IS, PASS IT IN A GOP CONGRESS.  And we need, once again, to use blackmail if necessary to get our way here.

Finally, we need to make sure that the Republicans leading the charge are down for the fight.  Those Republicans who are known as compromisers cannot be in charge of key committee assignments.  Once again, we may need to use blackmail here to prevent them from switching parties.

If we avoid these mistakes, we should be doing just fine in November 2012.

105 Okay, stay with me on this one: I don't want to take the House in 2010, and neither should you. Why? Well, we've been down this road before:

(1) Anything that the GOP does that turns the country around... Obama gets credit, just as Bill Clinton continues to get all the credit for the economy from 1995-2000.

(2) We can't get our legislation passed. Even if we had both houses of Congress, anything that we pass has to be watered-down enough to avoid an Obama veto. As Mark Steyn puts it, mix a pint of vanilla ice cream with a pint of dog shit, and the quart mixture is going to taste more like the latter than the former.

(3) The House GOP becomes Obama's foil. Anything that bad happens, Obama points to the House and says "the Republicans are gumming up the works." And the press will let him get away with it. Remember the 1995 government shutdown? Bill Clinton vetoed the GOP's budgets, but the storyline became "the Republicans shut down the government."

Bottom line: we don't need the House to gum up the works enough to prevent Obama from making things worse. We just have to get close, and we'll get a few conservative Democrats to jump aboard.

109  That would be wise if we weren't dealing with the second coming of the Peron's.

You elaborate most of the things I'm afraid of going into '12, but this is a catch 22: I don't think the country can withstand 2 more years of these insane statists; we also can't afford the chance of the bastards getting back into power.

It's full court press time: pressure must be put on the government by electing a Congress that will put the brakes on this president, but simply winning the Nov. elections will not be enough; the Tea Party and every other group can't go back to sleep -- if the media, academia, and unions are let off the hook the Dems will be back, and worse than ever in '12.
