Below the radar: bloodbath of high level heads rolling at DOE
— Purple Avenger

This is curious and I don't know what to think of it yet.

The directors of the Energy Department’s offices of nuclear power and fossil energy – which includes programs to trap carbon emissions from coal plants – are leaving the agency, signaling a major change in DOE's upper ranks.

Energy Secretary Steven Chu, in an email to DOE staff Friday, announced the early November departures of Jim Markowsky, the assistant secretary for fossil energy, and Pete Miller, the assistant secretary for nuclear energy.

News of the changes comes two weeks after DOE announced the departures of Undersecretary for Energy Kristina Johnson and Matt Rogers, who advises Chu on implementing the massive energy programs in the 2009 stimulus law...

Chu scapegoating underlings for spendulus non-performance to save his own hide? Preparing for the installation of even more insane policy makers? There's something going on here, and its probably not going to be something the public will like.

It depends upon what these people do. They may have already figured out that anything they do won't get through Congress next year, and the time to bail for the private sector is now. Also, if obama does want to pretend that he's a moderate, making them the scapegoats would be perfect (for him).

21 Maybe it has something to do with approving substandard well designs, like BPs?

Or could it be because of the environmental wavers routinely given out?

Or it could be something like, why did you fill the BP drill rig Deepwater Horizon with water? Didn't you know the damn thing was a boat.

Or how about not buying the fire booms?

Lots to choose from when inept bureaucracy is involved. It comes for free with big government clods.

24 Soothsayer - Jackson's just holding on until the election.   I can't imagine her hanging around to try to defend the CO2 endangerment finding before a GOP-led Congress.

That was one of the many questionable maneuvers taken based on a political calculation that the Dems would hold power for a decade, and now it's (hopefully) going to come back to bite them very, very hard.

It might in fact prove very difficult for Obama to find anyone (any warmist, that is) willing to fill the EPA seat.

This may prove to be a problem. If the eco-freaks are scared off, and Obama manages to find someone that isn't certifiably insane, that confirmation will be used to anchor Obama's re-invention.

Posted by: Blue Hen at October 04, 2010 11:41 AM (R2fpr)

27 Oh, I'm sure Obama is just going to start a push to ban all nuclear and fossil energy or something.  Nothing to worry about, we're all happy in our respective caves.

Posted by: David at October 04, 2010 11:41 AM (T8c0z)

28 After the 1994 bloodbath, Clinton tacked to the right and saved his presidency. Not Obama! Double down, Baby, double down! He'll have the EPA ban fossil fuel production! He'll mandate hybrid cars! He'll demand that everybody's thermostat be turned down to 50 in winter! Oh, the Republican Congress? That's what being Commander-In-Chief is for! Obama will start arming his supporters right after the election, just like his hero Chavez!

Posted by: The Rachel Corrie Brigade of the NSDAP at October 04, 2010 11:42 AM (QgAFR)

29 What's so puzzling?  Since the US is going to get entirely out of nuclear energy and fossil fuel production and consumption under our Dear Leader, why pay for those superfluous positions at the DoE?  It's a step toward streamlining the Federal government.  (As well as toward streamlining all of us citizens back into the Stone Age.)

Posted by: Luke Skyywalker and the 2 Live Crew at October 04, 2010 11:43 AM (fgCQL)

30 You can be sure it does not portend any new nuke plants, oil refineries, drilling permits, or anything else that actually makes energy in useful and much needed quantities.

31 Energy Secretary Steven Chu, in an email to DOE staff Friday, announced the early November departures of Jim Markowsky, the assistant secretary for fossil energy, and Pete Miller, the assistant secretary for nuclear energy.

Well, gee.  Maybe the problem with those two is that they thought they were supposed to, you know, help produce nuclear and fossil energy as opposed to help eliminate them.  The President needs team players who'll fully support and implement his agenda, right?

32 Saw on racist, evil, destructive fox news that the NRC (Nuke Reg. Comm'n.) is beefing up security screening of employees. Dunno much about the specifics (believe it to be employees at nuclear facilities), could it be that there was a specific high level terrorist threat that got through the screening? Could be related? Recalling back from when I was in the industry, I think the NRC is part of the DOE, but I am much older now and could be mistaken.

34 I hate to admit it, but even Rasmussen seems to be showing Democrats surging into to close here.  The Generic Lead is down to 3 points.

I'm sorry, but living in the world of reality, this makes no sense at all to me.  For instance, the preference gap for repeal of ObamaCare has fallen over 15 points in one week.

Huh?  The Democrats have done nothing but shit on themselves over the past week and they are surging?  I don't get it. Perhaps it was all the f*cking moron right-wing bloggers thinking they were doing us a favor by reaming the Pledge to America giving Dems talking points they could have only dreamed of before.

EVERYTHING the Dems have done has sucked.  How they hell can they be surging?

Definitely sounds like the DOE is doing some recycling and probably will replace the lost politicos or technicians with moonbattier counterparts.  Could either mean that the Obama Administration is entrenching itself agency-wise for after the anticipated electoral slaughter come November or that the saner people have had enough of Chu's energy nonsense.

Either way, nature abhors a vacuum and what will potentially fill vacuum is even more nuttier people.

/In the end, there will be only chaos.

40 @34: Simple, until after Labor Day, the left was completely disengaged.  Most people aren't engaged in politics all year, even in election years.  They don't pay attention until after Labor Day (don't ask me why; I don't know).

The "enthusiasm" gap was SO huge pre-Labor Day that the only thing most races could do is tighten up.  I wouldn't worry too much about it, but if you are, see what you can do with your local GOP to help with GOTV.

Commentary delivered with new rasmussen generic ballot poll:

Still, while the margin has varied somewhat from week-to-week, Republicans have been consistently ahead in the Generic Ballot for over a year, and it has run as high as 12 points. When Barack Obama first took office as president of the United States, the Democrats enjoyed a seven-point lead on the Generic Ballot.

Among voters not affiliated with either major party, Republicans hold an 18-point lead

Even the biggest liberal idiot in one of these positions, given enough time and data, HAS to see what they are doing to the country, and our ability to compete economicly.

A couple of years from now, we will see reports of internal documents, forcasting a further economic meltdown due to higher energy prices which are a direct result of this admins policies... and they really don't want to be anywhere near those agencies when it does meltdown.

Years ago, in response to me pointing out that an argument was logically flawed, I had a liberal tell me that "there is no such thing as logic." I learned a valuable lesson that day.  I'll grant you that he was not "in one of these positions," but still.

Educated guess from past employment with the NRC. Directors would be SES (Senior Executive Service) and most likely have some level of technical competence in what they are managing.

At this level they are expected to move around so without more scuttlebut its hard to say whether they are being pushed out or its musical chairs.

It is possible they are being pushed out as it takes awhile for the political appointees to make changes at the Director level.
