Best Reporting on "Coffee Party" Goes to...Palm Beach Post?!?
— Gabriel Malor

Seriously, while CNN and the NYTimes have studiously been avoiding the astroturfed origins of the "Coffee Party", reporter George Bennett has been laying it all out in south Florida paper the Palm Beach Post.

Now, you don't get credit for doing the right thing. But I give George a heckuva pat on the back for his follow-up reporting from the Coffee Party event this afternoon. As my twitter-pal @OneFineJay says, it truly deserves a "Not on the Onion" label for its humor, irony, and overall tone. I give it a B-plus.

This is not an auspicious beginning to a political movement:

Venting about the conservative tea party movement and talking — at times heatedly — about the need for civility in public discourse marked the debut meeting of a local "coffee party" group today.

"Frankly, we are petrified by the tea party and what they stand for and what they're talking about," said Monte Carmel, a retired business executive from West Palm Beach.

"I'm tired of all the misinformation, the cute little labels the fright-wing has thrown on everything," said a man named Russ.

"We have to stop the mantra of no taxes, no taxes, no taxes," said Marcia Halpern of Palm Beach Gardens.

Brownstein, who is white, said "white southerners in this country are going nuts" because of the popularity of black figures like President Obama and Oprah Winfrey. He said he raised the issue because "you have to know who your enemy is."

[...]

Mary Castronuovo of Palm Beach Gardens said she doesn't want the coffee party to be defined by its criticism of the tea party.

"I would be discouraged if this group became just a counter to the tea party," she said. "We can't make them the enemy."

Don't worry, sister. There's already a group counter to the Tea Party: Democrats.

Um, if "white Southerners" had such a problem with Oprah, somehow I don't think she'd be the most watched show on daytime TV.

Civility in public discourse?...where were they during the Bush Derangement Movement?  I'd say hanging a doll/effigy of Sarah Palin off your house pretty much negates any possibility of civility.

37 Brownstein, who is white, said "white southerners in this country are going nuts" because of the popularity of black figures like President Obama and Oprah Winfrey.

Imagine for a minute that a white president had tried to socialize health care, just like Obama. Would conservatives be aghast and trying to stop the power grab? Not only is this a "DUH" question, but it actually happened, and not that long ago.

So, again think this through for a minute. Conservatives react exactly the same to a white politician and a black politician trying to socialize health care. And liberals take this as a sign of racism. I think "stuck on stupid" is about the most apt explanation.

55 "Frankly, we are petrified by the tea party and what they stand for and what they're talking about," said Monte Carmel, a retired business executive from West Palm Beach.

This is without a doubt true.

For all the venom directed at Bush and the establishment Republicans running the show before 2006, liberals knew they were not serious about rolling back the layers of government the left has added on for the last 80 years, or frankly even doing more then slowing down its rate of growth.

The tea party movement is a different animal. We want to roll back the State. The idea that there might finally be real opposition to the Left is indeed a scary thought. Their claims of "scientific progress" aside, the Left knows how weak their philosophical basis is...

Obama has lost a lot of traditionally Dem support here in Palm Beach county too.  There were a lot of Hillary fans who voted for him, but in the past year a significant number have drifted from tepid support to outright dislike.

From the comment section of the Palm Beech news:

HilariousÂ’s comments just prove that many (not all) conservative/Tea Party members are just racists who canÂ’t handle the fact that we have a black President that is doing a far better job than our past President and is far more intelligent and articulate. DonÂ’t like the bank bailouts - blame your ol pal Bush. And how about a little criticism of all the Republican members of the legislature who railed against the stimulus yet proudly accepted stimulus money and PUBLICLY touted the benefits to their districts. DonÂ’t like the national debt/deficit? Look at who ran it up. When Clinton left office we had a SURPLUS. Think Obama is soft on terror? What about the surge in Afghanistan and the resulting caputres of high-ranking Taliban officials and taking a major Taliban-controlled city. DonÂ’t like that the underpants bomber is being tried in civilian court? Look at how Bush tried Richard Reed, the shoe bomber (IÂ’ll give you a hint, it was in civilian court). Think the Democrats are being un-American by passing healthcare through reconciliation? Look at how many major substantive pieces of legistlation were passed by the Republicans in reconciliation. And while youÂ’re at it, look at how the Republicans have ABUSED the filibuster in the past 4 years. TheyÂ’ve used it more than any Senate in history. So they can filibuster every piece of legislation, but itÂ’s wrong for the Democrats to use reconciliation. ItÂ’s getting to the point where itÂ’s even hard to take a Republican seriously or believe one word that comes out of their mouth. ItÂ’s hypocrisy at its WORST.

98 What I hate most about the left isn't so much the hypocrisy, but the projection. It's so mind bogglingly stupid. Every damn thing they accuse the right of they themselves are guilty of. Does no one ever see this except those of us on the right?

Posted by: wherestherum at March 13, 2010 08:18 PM (gofDd)

I can understand going either way on this one. Yes, the amount of projection the Left engages in is outrageous, but I would argue that the project isn't, for the most part, conscious, and is therefore somewhat less troubling.

Leftists try and put themselves in our shoes, to the limited extent they can, and presume we are evil, and as such recognize few if any limits to what we would do. They then think what they would do if trying to push for political power with no ethical constraints.

Flash forward to when liberals are then trying to push for political power of some sort. They then do their normal bizarre cost benefit analysis - if we don't pass health care, millions will die! And to save millions, isn't almost any option on the table? Which then leads to them being willing to use exactly the same methods they dreamed up the dreaded right using.

So where they stumble is that they excuse away what they presume to be their ethical constraints, and in a self serving way.

Now, for hypocrisy, they do recognize the sin. The response, for example, to Al Gore's lifestyle by the Left is I think a good example. They will agree he shouldn't have a carbon foot print equal to hundreds of normal people, *but* it is ok because he is a powerful liberal  - and we can't expect such people to live by the same rules they preach for us.

So here, they do realize exactly what they are doing. They just want the excuse, because most of them presume they will be the masters at some point also...

I think it's precisely because it's pretty much knee jerk and requires no thought or understanding of reality. Hypocrisy is something we're all guilty of, though at least some of us will at least admit to it. And sure the hypocrisy is frustrating, but it doesn't surprise me. It's the utter cluelessness that comes with the projection that just drives me crazy.

Indeed. While Congress and the President both have significant checks and balances in the other's primary spheres of interest, Congress primarily controls budgeting and the President primarily controls foreign/military policy.

So, in 2000 we had a nominal government surplus and a a triumphant Al Qaeda in the last stages of the 9/11 attack.

For some strange reason the coffee party people don't inspire much in me beyond "meh" -- after working with people who would fit the profile of "coffee partyer, average" (community  project) I can testify that they get nothing done.  Nothing. zip. nada. zilch.  It did indeed turn into rounds of sitting around at the local coffeehouse talking -- we couldn't get anybody to actually work beyond coming up with cool ads and "bylaws" (like mandatory gifting of a portion of the garden produce to shelters and mandatory organic bs, which we told them over and over again just would not fly, not that they listened).  At least the house specialties there are really yummy, and we could turn the rest of the evening after the meetings into date night, so all was not lost I guess.

I give this coffee party thing about three more months -- by that time the singles will have hooked up or been completely shot down and will lose interest, and the attached will get sick of drinking so much coffee.  That was about the lifespan of the group I had to deal with.

Been asking myself this.  I checked it out - the process takes about 6 weeks, apparently, so keep that in mind.  I'm thinking about buying foreign land and putting the remaining cash into offshore accounts.  And NOT in Euros, either.

True.  I must admit that it sometimes distrubs me to think of them.  I recently learned about some of the more exotic ways that the Romans murdered the Christians in the colluseum.  Beyond shocking, and so extreme that even HBO/movie studios dare not hint at, let alone show, them.

Of course in fairness to Rome, their Baalist foes across the Mediterranean would make anyone outside of Planned Parenthood blanch.

Indeed - also very horrible.  It is my understanding that their fire alters were often like giant griddles, so the afflicted babies/children did not even get a quick death.  Anybody who bitches about how "evil" the Old Testament's divinely ordered genocides were has absolutely no grasp of how vile those people were who got wiped out.  If anything, even more genocides were needed.

176 All that said, while Palme Beach is fucked up, I still don't think Palm Beach is QUITE as fucked up as down here in Broward.  I could go into why, but that tangent would be a multi-page dissertation, and I doubt most Morons are genuinely interested in the minutiae of local Florida politics.

Actually, going back and doing a little more reading I am greatly amused to see that there is now a significant effort afoot to argue that neither Carthage nor the Phoenicians engaged in such human sacrifice.

Apparently it was a propaganda effort by the Romans and Israelites - and they just happened to echo exactly the same charge against their neighbors...sure...

188 "Civility" in politics in this day and age, is a demand put upon us by our enemy who have no restraint themselves. This is done to paralyze any resistance to their perfidy, lies, betrayals and love of any and all ideology hostile to our continued existence as a free and sovereign nation.

These scumbags won a major victory decades ago when they convinced the weak, stupid, sniveling, academic ivory tower sect that the battle against the sick, twisted, anti-human filthosophies of the totalitarian left was simply a "war of ideas" and not the bare knuckled blood brawl it honestly was and is.

Today, as yesterday, the weak, the stupid, the sniveling, the deluded, the pathetic. These are the ones who will fall for that "keep it civil" bullshit. This is not about a debate and it never was. This is all about a fight to the death for everything of value.

Of course, the MSM will keep giving them deferential treatment, because they're similarly crooked and therefore sympathetic.

Man, oh man I hate reporters.

190 36 - What I hate most about the left isn't so much the hypocrisy, but the projection. It's so mind bogglingly stupid. Every damn thing they accuse the right of they themselves are guilty of. Does no one ever see this except those of us on the right?

Every damn thing they accuse us of they do in spades. I think their big problem with us is that they think they own the patents on voter fraud and astro-turfing.

Posted by: Bitsko at March 13, 2010 09:13 PM (8/KZN)

191 @190

The thing to remember about the left is that they don't see the world as it is, they see the world as they are.

They assume that we do all of the nasty and evil things that they themselves would do if they were in our place.

They assume that our principles and ideals, which we are quite open and honest about, are really trojan horse strategies to trick the public into voting for.....well I don't really know what it is that we're "really" supposed to be all about according to the left.  What I do know is that they accuse us of trojan horse shenanigans precisely because that strategy is their entire MO nowadays.  This is why they are constantly inventing new euphemisms and new labels for the same old bullshit.

193 @183

Actually I think calling them Latte Liberals would work better.

If we go around calling them vulgar names it makes us look as bad as they are.  Remember it is the unaffiliated voters that we are trying to win points with.

When they call us "teabaggers" it makes them look bad.  We'd look just as bad were we to respond in kind.

If we call them Latte Liberals, we poke fun at them while accurately describing exactly what they are.  Everyone knows what a Latte Liberal is:  whiny, over-privileged, prone to buying into hare brained "solutions" based on childish notions of how the world works.  Marxists who have no understanding of what would happen were their pet theories ever put into practice.

They've opened themselves up to being labelled in this way when they started calling themselves the coffee party.  That was a bit of truth in advertising that was completely unintended I'm sure.

It is about time that we, the silent majority spoke out against the right wing tea party facists.

We support President Obama. Healthcare and home ownership are not privilages; they are both human rights.

Viva Obama, may he become President for Life.

AFTER WE IMPLEMENT HEALTHCARE REFORM; TAKE AWAY ALL OF THE GUNS. MAKE THE USA A GUN FREE NATION.

Isn't that what happened in Zimbabwe?  Private property was taken away from the people who had it (primarily white farmers who grew the food that supported the nation), the land & property was given to friends of president for life Robert Mugabe, and now what?  The "nation" of Zimbabwe, if you can call it that, is starving, produces nothing, and people get hacked to death with machetes.

Saw a picture online last week (was it here at AOSHQ?), an old elephant died of unknown reasons in Zimbabwe, and villagers descended upon the corpse and stripped it clean.  They even took the bones.  It was truly grim, the photos of villagers surrounding this huge dead elephant and hacking at it with machetes.

Er, so all Jewish-sounding, or even non-Anglo-sounding names indicate someone's a leftist douchebag?  PBC and Broward may be the most Dem counties in Florida, but FYI, they're also national ground zero for Jewish Republicans, who tend to be younger.  Like, just for one random example, myself.  There are more Jewish Republicans in the Florida Legislature than any other state in the union.

As for the name Castronuovo, google Patrick Castronovo for one of Marco Rubio's biggest supporters.

Some tea party critics — including two white participants at the Panera Bread summit — have accused the predominantly white tea partyers of being motivated by racial unease with or outright hostility toward America’s first black president.

Two black women took part in the West Palm Beach meeting [of about 40 people]. Local organizer George Papison said he believes several participants were Latino.
