Blog Drama
— Ace

I really should have known better to tangle with Captain Queeg. Just because now I have to do this post.

This is my own fault. Johnson didn't attack me, he attacked Allah, and Allah's a big boy, and can take care of this stuff himself. So I volunteered to get into the drama; I didn't have to, and that's on me.

Having entered the drama -- my fault again! -- I guess I now have to further it.

But at least I'll put it under the jump.
1. Thanks for publishing the headers of an email I sent you, Charles! On the pretext that I might claim the email is fake. (Hey, why not wait for me to claim that? Then you can expose me as a liar.)

I don't think someone can figure anything out from gmail headers, but it's the sort of threatening creepiness we've come to expect from him. I do appreciate the fresh worries, Chuck.

2. That email about Sweetness and Light is a damnable lie!

3. Oh wait, no it's not; it's genuine. (See, didn't really have to be creepy about this, Queeg.)

For reasons I don't want to get into -- just as when I did not want to get into them when I foolishly mentioned this Johnson -- someone I happen to trust warned me that it would be best to keep a distance from S&L.

That's sort of all I'd like to say, as it was never my idea to take that bit of it public. It was never my problem, but rather the problem of someone else I had sympathy and regard for.

And the hot tone of that email was due to the fact I'd just heard this stuff recently, as in, within the past couple of weeks. Had the thing not been recent in my mind, I would have just said, "Duly noted."

But Charles Johnson thought it best to explicitly name the a third party. Another bit of creepiness -- couldn't have just XXXXd out the third party named? No, of course not; it's The Creep's way of saying "None of your secrets are safe."

And also, of course, alerting S&L that maybe I've got something against him.

4. About his claim that he didn't get his outing-victims' information from PayPal, but rather independently from "publicly available" sources plus his helpful informants: Well, I can't know how he got the information. I note he doesn't deny that the information was available to him via PayPal; he just says he got it from a different source.

So, there's CJ"s version of guaranteed anonymity: If you piss him off, and you've donated to you, he promises he will never out you using information gotten from your donations.

It is his solemn vow that such information will instead be gotten from other sources. Instead of the three-minutes-of-work needed to out you from PayPal information, he promises he will instead put in the several hours of work to track your information from "other sources."

Whether people find that reassuring is up to them. I consider it very dirty pool, as does everyone else. The NYT profile of him noted that this was pretty much unprecedented on the Internet.

5. As to whether he grabs credit and swipes stories: This is a bit of complicated issue, involving blog courtesy and such. Since the rest of this post is so inside-blogball, I guess there's no harm in going further down this rathole.

Let me talk about "swiping stories." Johnson believes that if he throws in a lame hat-tip at the end of a post, he hasn't "swiped a story," because he's given you attribution.

That's not the case. A lame hat-tip at the end of a post covers one's ass, I suppose, in terms of attribution, but it fails to do what a proper link is supposed to do: Throw some traffic.

Some blogs are deliberately "gateway blogs," throwing out traffic wide and far in general furtherance of good-guy blogger boosterism. is deliberately, and most famously, this kind of blog.

Instapundit looks for excuses to link blogs -- not media stories, though he links them too of course; but his primary goal is to call attention to other blogs and "share the wealth." He has a very good reputation along these lines; the only problem with an Instapundit link is that it doesn't throw as much traffic as you'd think it would, but that's largely because he's linking so many blogs during the day that you're just getting a small slice of his readers.

Crucially, if a blog mentions, say, a Reuters story, Instapundit tends to link the blog which tipped him, rather than the Reuters story itself; anyone interested in that story, then, has to at least go through the blog to get to the story. They'll end up at Reuters, but they go through the tipping blog first.

On the other hand, some blogs are very jealous and ungenerous about throwing links and traffic to "competitors." Some blogs fancy themselves not "gateway blogs" but "destination blogs," and attempt to set themselves up as the only blog you need to read.

Not a portal, then, but a terminus.

It has always been my belief that Charles Johnson fancied his blog as that.

Let's say Jammie Wearing Fool tips me to a story. Now, in the story he's linked, there are only three or four quotable paragraphs -- that's the way most news stories go, right? Three or four paragraphs of good stuff, and then some background, and then some filler.

Now, if Jammie Wearing Fool tips me to this story, and quotes the two good paragraphs from it, and then when I push the story I also quote the same two paragraphs, what have I "left behind" at Jammie Wearing Fool that would induce someone to click on his link?

If you take everything from Jammie Wearing Fool, see, you're not throwing him any traffic when you lamely, at post's end, say "Thanks to JWF." That's a hat-tip, sure, and a hat-tip and four bucks will still buy you a cup of Starbucks coffee. But that's all.

To actually throw traffic to the site, you have to be able to say "More at JWF" and you have to kinda-sorta mean it most of the time. There does have to be "more" there, or else readers will soon realize you're lying when you say that.

One thing you can do to "leave something behind" is link Jammie Wearing Fool for the story itself, and not Reuters; in that case, if someone wants to read the original article in full, they have to at least go to Jammie Wearing Fool to get that link.

Sometimes this is sort of hard to avoid, stealing the guts of someone's find. Especially when it's just a hot video being linked -- at that point you have to choose whether to swipe the video and have it on your site, too, or just throw a link to the guy who had it first.

My experience with throwing tips to Charles Johnson was this: Don't bother. Because if you sent him the tip that a Reuters story included interesting paragraph 1, interesting paragraph 2, and interesting paragraph 3, your "reward" from the Great Charles Johnson was seeing this up at his wonderful blog:

Reuters [direct link to Reuters story]:

Interesting Paragraph 1. [which you sent him]

Interesting Paragraph 2. [which you sent him]

Interesting Paragraph 3. [which you sent him]

Via Ace of Spades. [Gee, thanks! You mentioned me! You see that, Ma? I'ma somebody now!]

It quickly dawned on me that if I wanted any traffic from LGF readers, the right strategy was to not tip Charles Johnson, thus forcing, sort of, his readers to come over to my blog and see for themselves if I'd found anything of interest.

Because, if I sent Johnson a tip, that whole tip was going up on his site, pretty much, just as I myself had put it on mine, with no apparent reason for any reader to click through to me. In other words, having an Ace of Spades tip up at LGF pretty much meant his readers wouldn't come over to the site, as they'd know that CJ had faithfully reproduced the only interesting thing on my site that day.

Better, then, to leave it up in the air as to whether anything interesting was going on on this site then, so at least I'd get curiosity-clicks.

It's kind of screwed up when you realize you probably get more traffic by not being linked from a site than being linked by it.

I never really sent out too many tips to anyone, but when I realized LGF was a big site (which came sort of late -- I only became aware of him kinda late in the Blog 1.0 period), I did occasionally send him tips when I sent them out to the other heavier-hitters.

Eventually I just stopped tipping him, because, I figured, why do any favors for him if none would be coming back in return?

Hell, let him find the story I found on his own. If I'm not going to get the proper link-back, then why should I just be one of his tipsters?

This is what I mean by "swiping stories." I'm not saying he doesn't offer a hat-tip. But I'm saying few in the blog-world (apart from newbies) give a crap about a hat-tip; what people want is traffic, fresh eyes checking out their sites; and Charles Johnson has been extremely begrudging and stingy about leaving anything behind at blogs he got tips from.

And this is what bloggers meant on this score, and why other bloggers simply stopped tipping him altogether. Wasn't worth the time it took to cut and paste an email, or to even bcc him into one you already did.

Unless you really just wanted to see your blog mentioned on the Great Little Green Footballs (and personally, I never got the attraction), or were big into advancing your numbers on that The Truth Laid Bear chart, what's the point?

As I said, he thinks of his site as a terminus, not a gateway. Fine. He wants his blog to be one-stop shopping, with no reason to visit other blogs. Again, fine.

But also: duly noted.

As for grabbing credit: Like I said, I realize the media wants to simplify stories to include the fewest number of actors. I get that. That's not Charles Johnson's fault. That's the way it is.

But somehow the media keeps getting the idea that Charles Johnson was the originator, or at least "the central blogger" in RatherGate.

Does he correct them? I realize that even if he corrected them in an interview, that might not make it to print.

But see this NYT profile of Johnson, calling him "the central blogger" in Rathergate. (Emphasis added by me.)

Johnson takes issue with the (quite derogatory) profile in a pair of posts; though he offers the profile several "fact-checks" (some pretty dubious), I don't see him offering any kind of nuance to their claim that he was "the central blogger" in Rathergate.

I don't see him saying, "I was a central blogger on Rathergate, but Powerline and BillINDC were also central players, not to mention the non-blogger BuckHead who broke the story, and I told them so: And yet they couldn't even get that much right."

Whether he affirmatively grabs credit I don't know, and I couldn't know. I'm not privvy to what it is he claims to media reporters.

It does seem to me that the media tends to overstate his centrality in these stories, and it also seems to me he's never been terribly eager to correct their overstatements.

Passively permitting the media to overstate your role is also a kind of spotlight-grabbing, after all: Ask Blumenfield in Connecticut. The media kept somehow getting the impression he'd been a soldier in Vietnam, and, despite frequently demanding corrections on other matters, he never corrected them on this point.

This last point is fairly churlish on my part, because Johnson did, definitely, play an important role in Rathergate; that GIF was a terrific visual.

Still -- it was a GIF. He put together two screencaps and made them cycle between each other. No credit for BillINDC, who actually landed an interview with the author of the Bible of typography (only later contacted by the media), who said that typeface simply didn't exist in the seventies. Nor credit to Rathergate.com, nor Powerline, and so on.

Look: At the end of the day, as cool as it was, Charles Johnson made a GIF. And then he did what every other blogger was doing -- he linked stories.

The central blog? Well... a central blog, sure. But more accurately: A big blog with a lot of traffic that linked stories, same as everyone else. Which also made a GIF.

Like I said: A terminus blog.

34 Now that I am a cob-logger, I have to be more aware of shit like this, and I agree with Ace: my rule is to link the blog that has the Interesting Story rather than the Interesting Story itself (unless I happened upon the Interesting Story on my own). But to me the terminus is more interesting than the route by which I got there; hat-tips are hard because I usually get about ninety different sources for a given link, and it's not possible to find out who was "first". What I dislike most about CJ's conduct, and what dismays me the most considering the high opinion of him that I used to have, is his cavalier treatment of others' reputations (and his over-inflated opinion of his own). My first goal when posting on AoSHQ is not to reflect badly on Ace himself. If I post some jackass screed or racially-inflamatory "joke" here, Ace will get the blame for it. Thus, I am very careful -- even more so now that I am a cob-logger. Ace gets it, and CJ doesn't. 'Nuff said. That's why I post here and not there. (Well, that and AoSHQ is fun whereas LGF is boring and smarmy and self-righteous.)

I honestly didn't want to come forward with this information, but now that there's been this dust-up, I feel compelled to provide this information to the public.  Charles shampoos his hair with Alberto VO-5. I know you're thinking that's very metro and maybe it is.  But I want to offer this in defense of Charles: He only shampoos once a month.

Caught you, you lying whore!  He uses Fructis, and he is NOT metro...he is unashamedly gay.

75 Sigh.  Sorry to see ace dragged into this high school crap.  I have no interest in back-tracking and re-hashing all of the arguments and fights between LGF and the right-o-sphere.  I've seen enough of it unravel over the past couple of years to have formed an opinion of the players.

I know that my opinion only matters insofar as I am a consumer of their stuff and provider of traffic.  FWIW there are blogs I visit frequently (AoSHQ, Jawa, HotAir, neoneocon, Althouse), blogs I used to visit frequently (Protein Wisdom), blogs I forget to visit frequently but wish I'd remember to visit more frequently (Closing Velocity, Powerline), and blogs I checked out a couple of times and found uninteresting (Atlas Shrugs).

Then there's LGF, a place so toxic and twisted that I will no longer even visit out of morbid curiosity.  I don't care what Johnson did in the past or why he is so angry now, I just wish he'd get whatever help or attention or therapy he needs to move on with his life.  Barring that, I think there's a very real possibility this guy will injure himself or others.  Actually, "outing" his donors or people with whom he disagrees already qualifies in my book as an injury.

104 Shutter Island was very good. Shutter Island is the sort of movie when (reviewing it in my head as I watched) I realized that the question of whether it was "good" was a boring one; the question was whether it was good or a truly great movie. Answer: Just very good. It's really nothing terrifically new (you've seen this sort of movie before, several times). It's just good at it. Still, very good. Effective at what it does, even while not being novel in what it does. A really handsome movie too. Photography is great and Scorcese amps up the color just enough that stuff looks vivid without looking cartoonish or atificial. They do that now, you know? On computers they can tease the color of anything into something else. Some movies are very annoying and obvious about this, so they keep drawing attention to the artificiality of it. Like their computer-coloring-program is the star of the film. Shutter Island doesn't do that. I can tell (because the colors are so perfect) they've been tweaked a lot, but it's not all attention-grabbing and in your face.

106 I always enjoy a good rant (seriously, this is where good writing really comes through), but who cares about LGF anymore?  This is like getting upset about Newsweek.

To be honest, I couldn't really even see the appeal of it when it was big.  The writing wasn't anything special.  There wasn't much new when I'd go over there (probably for the reasons you mentioned, people wouldn't tip him)--I'm against extreme Islamism, but after the 500th post on the topic, I got the point.

The comments also weren't that interesting even before the purging.  To be fair, other commenters here say they used to be very good in the early 2000s, which was before I paid attention to it.

Most I've gone to the theater in years. I basically stopped going altogether two years ago and only started again now. 1. MacGruber -- profanely hilarious. 2. Iron Man 2 -- More of the same. Well done, but without the novelty and surprise -- like, when you saw Iron Man 1 you were surprised it was good. Worth seeing, though. 3. Robin Hood -- awful. 3. A-Team -- next on the list.

154 The thing is, its really hard to know if someone got a story from you or from somewhere else, unless they bother with a hat tip. For example, if you and some other guy get a story from a news aggregator or an original source (the Daily mail, for instance) and he posts it later than you, did he rip you off? What if he sees the article on your site and goes "cool" and heads to the daily mail and reads it, then thinks of something you didn't write, is he obligated to note he saw it at your place first?

So my question is: yeah, movie sucked, went nowhere... does it get credit for having a good first half hour though? With The Box... I like movies and am so often disappointed by dreck that I do want to give it partial credit and say, "Hey, the movie is stupid, but for the first half hour, it does get your attention and convince you it's a well-made and well-written film."

189 You know what the biggest difference between AoS and LGF is ?

In all honesty, that difference is counterintuitive.  Remember when Lee Harvey Dipshit made his appearance the other day?  Before Ace had a chance to velcro up his shoes and send that little Thai boy on his way so he could deal with it, that fuckweed had been utterly abused, people had been notified, etc.  It's, ironically, the opposite of authoritarian.  It's collective.

For some reason I had a brief email exchange with the Ewok during the whole HotAir "Wookie" kerfuffle, where he said to the effect "I think that shit started at our place".  Not "my place".

This joint is a socialist dream, in that it's a collective culture.

I think the difference with LGF is obvious.

198 The one thing I'd say about that movie is some movies start out really interesting and then go nowhere (a lot of John Carpenter movies are like this). Vampires. Carpenter trying to be Tarantino and not succeeding. And I'll never forgive Carpenter for Ghosts of Mars. Never. That movie was so lousy it actually gave me the flu. (Or maybe I already had the flu and the movie just exacerbated it somehow.) My point being: Ghost of Mars was one of the worst movies of the decade, if not the last half-century. And not even in a "so bad it's funny" way; just bad, bad, bad. I would also much rather have seen the movie version of Escape From Butcher Bay rather than the lame-ass Chronicles of Riddick movie they ended up making. Butcher Bay was a surprisingly good game, and I think it would have made a nifty movie.

204 Everyone has access to these news stories. No one has a monopoly on them. If a blogger discusses a story in Reuters there is no law that says other bloggers can't discuss it, too. And they don't have to link other bloggers who maybe had it up on their blog first. Pedo Johnson was whining about having the Reuters story up a few minutes before another blogger. Who gives a fuck? But, if Pedo Johnson wants to play that game, he claims he doesn't steal stories but instead get's his tips from his commenters. However, there is no way of knowing where his commenters got their tip from. So, all this phony propriety interest in crap no one owns a monopoly on is ridiculous. I do believe in giving other bloggers link. But it is professional courtesy and optional. It's not because they might have linked the story first. Instead of jumping in to defend Allahpundit next time, just remind Charles Pedo Johnson that HotAir gets 10 times the traffic that his crappy blog does. Recently, Charles Pedo Johnson's crappy blog got a a very small jump. However, it averages around 70,000 a day which sucks.

Re outing, I've been outed before; by flenser on this site in fact. I posted at Gates Of Vienna and he followed me there. Read it here. (Or, don't read it; because the admins, much as I disagree with them elsewhere, buhleeted his outing attempt.)

That gives me some perspective on what CJ did to Rodan. Rodan was already a public figure, sorta, when CJ let loose his name. Likewise, I've been posting here and elsewhere for many years - not braggin', cause I got little content worth the braggin' about, just sayin'. So Rodan can call CJ a slimy little douche, like flenser is a slimy little douche, but can't (and doesn't) much care about the outing.

As for savage, I haven't asked him, but I doubt he cares much about the outing either. He's told us his profession; nobody in it gives a shit what he'd say on LGF or blogmocracy or anywhere else.

It was m who had the expectation of not having her personal data aired. That was some bad juju there.

208 I mean, what you're saying is that you knew you had no intention of doing anything violent. How does HE know that? How could he? He probably doesn't know you. If someone I don't really know starts talking about bullets that have my name on them, how am I supposed to react? I am supposed to be chill about it? The problem is that someone who's saying like this is, no offense, already committing a serious breach. So how am I to know such a person merely means to commit a serious breach as opposed to a deadly breach? I'm supposed to be Joe Psychic Threat Evaluator? What the hell are people, who say stuff like "Guns are just tools which aren't dangerous if *used in a responsible and respectful fashion*" doing talking about SHOOTING PEOPLE? I fucking got pissed when Erick Erickson had his rant about blowing away a census guy, too, just for being a dick. These are the words of responsible gun owners, the sort of people who are supposed to be reassuring the gun-panicky people in the country that guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens are not threatening? Don't such people have an obligation to actually BE non-threatening and to cool it with telling people they just might get shot?

221 1) The point of such statements is to threaten; 2) A person needs to be very angry or very unbalanced generally to threaten in such a manner; and, ergo: 3) The very fact such as this is made at all raises fairly serious questions about whether the person making the threat could or would execute the threat. There's an easy way to make sure that no one thinks you might shoot him: You don't say something like "I just might shoot you."

218 Everyone has access to these news stories. No one has a monopoly on them. If a blogger discusses a story in Reuters there is no law that says other bloggers can't discuss it, too. And they don't have to link other bloggers who maybe had it up on their blog first.

But if you found out about it from a person and they already have a post on it, there is a matter of courtesy.  Even when people don't have a blog and merely e-mails ace, he'll give recognition if it was an individual and not 45 people all sending him the link.  Its not a matter of discussion, its crediting the people that put you on the path.

Posted by: buzzion at June 12, 2010 02:05 PM (oVQFe)

226 The law as to what is a credible threat differs from state to state. The bottomline is that even though they can't prove something, doesn't mean they can't get a warrant for your arrest, extradite you, make you sit in jail or pony up bail, go through a trial, etc. And even if acquitted, you can't sue them for wrongful prosecution. So, why risk it?

Posted by: moi at June 12, 2010 02:06 PM (Ez4Ql)

227 I really don't get how people who SHOULD subscribe to the old code of the gun -- never draw a gun unless you intend to kill a man -- can be so cavalier about casually threatening to shoot people. Again, the whole point, I thought, was to be very, very careful and serious about the life-or-death power a gun grants the man who carries it, rather than childish and criminal about it. But I do see shit like this all the time from gun-owners, confirming all the "panicky fears" of liberals as actually not that panicky at all.

Posted by: ace at June 12, 2010 02:07 PM (66DVY)

228 Bloggers are, to a certain extent,  like celebrities and commenters their fans. We read what Ace writes and kinda feel like we know him and when we comment we think he kind of knows us. But we're really strangers for the most part and Ace and other bloggers don't know when we're joking sometimes. Best to err on the side of caution.

They can't.

238 If someone I don't really know starts talking about bullets that have my name on them, how am I supposed to react? A lot of it is context and familiarity as well. Lots of long-time commenters talk shit to each other. I myself occasionally do a "I'll hit you in the neck with a fucking cactus!" thing. But there is a clear difference, both rhetorically and intent-wise, between saying that and saying, "I'm going to get an AR15 and shoot you in the face!". Remember: when you write stuff don't, you don't convey body language or tone of voice. And if you don't comment often, then people don't have much history to judge you by. So however it sounded in your head, posts like that come off as threatening and creepy. (I've done it myself a few times, by accident, because I forgot that things sound different when spoken aloud versus being written down.) A rule of thumb (and one I struggle with myself) is to think twice or even three times before you hit that "Post" button. Think about how your post is going to sound to people who don't know you. There's a really fine line between a joke and a threat.

But this isn't about  situations where people write about the same subject.  This is a case of for example you writing a blog post, posting it and then e-mailing me and saying hey check this out. Then I go and write a blog post about it, highlighting the exact same information and then at the end going HT moi.  Wouldn't it be more courteous of me to write a post that says Moi has an interesting bit of information over at their blog.  The point of sending a link to another blog is to hope you gain some traffic from it.  Stealing isn't even being brought up.

Pitch Black was actually one of the best sci-fi films to come out in recent years. It's just a pity that they couldn't follow up on it. Like I said, I think Escape From Butcher Bay would have made a much better movie than Chronicles did. Riddick is a badass; why now show him in his natural habitat (prison)? Actually I think the law was passed after that episode with the crackpot University Professor whose name I shall not mention made all the threats to a blogger's child.

Since it does cross State lines I would have no problem with it Constitutionally.

Sensitive Ponytail Douche isn't a beta.  He is an omega.  Of the lesser variety.

A beta is an accountant.  An omega is a guy that spends 18 hours a day in front of a computer banning people from his blog.

292 "You deserved being banned.." I got banned for arguing that the census taker wasn't murdered based on the carefully worded statements of the police and the delay in announcing their findings. I also pointed out that a lot of the crazy reporting claiming it was murder was actually misquoting what the police said of which Carly Johnson and his green shitheads did routinely. I was right. Pedo Johnson and his little pedo followers were wrong. Bite me.

293 I didn't hate it, but it was a disappointment, and didn't really relate in any way to Pitch Black beyond having the same lead character.

But no, instead we get some bizarre "Riddick mythos" thing that had approximately fuck-all to do with the first film.

Bah.

Posted by: Monty at June 12, 2010 06:24 PM (O3eFQ)

Chronicles of Riddick was badass, Pitch Black was the shiznit. They need to continue the series it didn't exactly suck when they ended it, not even close.

I'm ususally a big movie fan myself, but yeah so far this summer has been pretty slow. Wanted to see Robin Hood, but the mediocre reviews put me off that. Still want to see Inception.

There is a film noir called The Killer Inside Me with Casey Affleck, Jessica Alba, and Kate Hudson that looks pretty good. Based on a 50s novel. Tried to read it, it actually gave me a nightmare, which is rare for a book or movie to do that. Real life is scary enough these days with the state of national and world affairs these days. Don't know when for sure the movie comes out, but I will give it a try.

And, yes there is supposed to be a Hangover 2 at some point. They were already planning a sequel while making the first Hangover.

Actually the screencap did not work -
- MS Windows screen fonts and print fonts are sometimes a little different - here the screen font and the print font had different superscripts - CJs original GIF was a screencap and the only remarkable diff was the superscript th jumping up and down- hence a lot of the initial shiite about Ranther.

330 Actually, I enjoyed the "boring" inside blogball bit there.  Having started to play a little bit in it myself just for kicks, I make no claim to being big or the least bit important in any way.  But it was good info to know on writing up and linking; I always try to say where I found something, linking as necessary, but always added links to the original story.  (as an aside, I found my 5 views a day would be more likely to click a link if it was an actual URL in a separate line rather than different colored words for an embedded link.)

Never wanted to be seen as stealing material, just want to pretend sometimes that I'm an opinion columnist.  Thanks for the tips!

As for linkbacks, it's considered bad form to cut and paste the entirety even if you do link. A short excerpt for subject matter is OK

Taking an entire story, linking back to a few AP source articles, and then at the very bottom putting in H/T so-and-so is considered assholery.

Even if Jonah only said "Wow", you knew of the story from his tip. Hit NRO, then the link to the source story.

One thing the girlfriend should have mentioned is that Affleck had a conflict of interest in the matter: He'd only get famous if he revealed the crime. If he buried it, he'd remain a nobody schnoob. So he was too compromised by his own self-interest to make an objective decision. It annoyed me a little that she didn't mention that. His unconscious motives should have been brought up.

366 Quod Erat Demonstradum.
"That which was to be demonstrated."
Or, in moron, at the end of an argument, "so bite me".

Heh.

I musta bin a Moron 10 years before Ace of Spades even existed.

End of a 7 blackboard Euclidean proof (we only had 5 in the room) complete with diagrams and verbal explication (including on the fly Q&A, no notes BTW), I properly ended by chalking Q.E.D.

Bell rang, some students scribbled last minute notes, others gathered their back-packs and others just booked it for lunch.

I stood up at the board in kind of a daze.

The room was mostly empty when I next moved.

Unfortunately, my Professor was kind of in the doorway when I slam-dunked my chalk and eraser into the trash bin and shouted, "Take that, bitches!  That's how shit gets proved!".

Forever after, he could not look at me without laughing a bit.

That's a good point.  I leaned toward Affleck but it was a tough call.

Explaining why would require giving away to much I think.

One more thing regarding Zombie. Since CJ gave her the the Birkenstocked boot, she has now become a regular contributor over at Pajamas Media. You know, the site Chuckles helped to found with michelle Malkin and then got kicked out of.

375 I got hooked on LGF right after the RatherGate thing - even Rush mentioned it a couple times.  Was thrilled to death when I finally made it through a Registration window.  The place was pretty conservative, and Charles blogged about the lefty wingnuts - and all that.

But truth was - he liked the adoration (and obviously wasn't going to get it on the Left after dissing Rather), but his pink little heart wasn't in it.  In a way, you have to give him some credit for finally owning up to his liberalism (well, he didn't really - claimed he was getting put off by the Birthers, etc., but that's all transparent BS).

So, I went over to HotAir, and they banned me for dissing dumb voters and pointing out that the system needs to be changed if we're ever going to stop being ruled by socialists (too many people want to vote for people who promise to rob the "lucky rich guys" and spread it around).  At that time AllahP was kind of up-tight about criticism from LGF - about letting wacko right-wingers comment at will.

Am pretty pleased here.

Ace,  you're doing a great job here - forget Charles.  He's self-destructing, and will soon be bought out by Kos or HuffPo -  or simply explode and get disgusting lizard guts all over the floor.  Thanks for being a haven for sanity.

He's liable to contact the FBI or Homeland security just for you saying you want to rustle up a posse against him. At any rate, he's not worth the effort. Sooner or later he's gonna get his pony tail caught in a rusty bicycle sprocket on his way to snap a picture of Overnight Empty Twinkie Wrapper and go tumbling headfirst into a canyon and raped by wolves.

The thing that amazed me most was his vehemance towards the Tea Parties.  These were organized to protest the government overspending and taxation.  Their origin is in the fiscal conservatism.  They never seemed to have anything to do with social conservative issues.  They seemed like the perfect thing for LGF to be all for since he had gone off on his "Christianity is stoopid" campaign.

But people like Glenn Beck had already backed the Tea Parties so he couldn't be seen associating with them.

396 I commented at LGF for a couple of years under another nic, but I bailed out when it became obvious that CJ was coddling a bunch of Catholic baiting bigots. I toyed with the idea of sicking Bill Donovan on him, but for some sense of misguided pity gave up on the thought- I believe that the path he has set himself on will be far more punishing than anything Bill Donovan, or anyone else could do to him. As I've said before- Mr. Johnson started out as an honest journalist and ended up as Bill Maher. That's not exactly my idea of a successful career trajectory, but if it works for him I wish him well. And he can kiss my German-Irish Catholic ass!

399 I think that typically gets a link to the original with a "Via NRO" or something.  But I don't know really.

I usually make it a point to say something like, "According to Jimbob Jumpants from The National Thinking Spectator of American On-Line Commentary, "We Are Boned".

Then I'll make a link out of a relevant quote that steered me towards the news source.

But that's just me.

I would feel weird about following a link or two because I twigged to it from NRO and then present it as if it was all my idea, in the first place.

Big time.  Blows his brother away.  Excellent movie.  Has anyone seen the Jessie James movie?  Wasn't he in that as well....

I've never seen Casey, but I think Ben is a hell of an actor.  Problem is, he's not often put in the right role.  I know Asteroid (Armageddon? whatever) was dumb, but he was great in that, f/x.  Like when Willis' character stays on the asteroid and stuffs Affleck's character back into the airlock, Affleck puts on a tear jerking performance.  I think--there's something about him--he's just hard to cast right.  I don't know what it is.  But he can Act.

He was great in Good Will Hunting.  That last scene?  You know, where he goes to the house and finds that his friend has finally gone?  Yeah, that one.  Wow.  Or where the briany asshole confronts him in the bar.  In the right role, he can string together a ton of great "moments."

Plus, he's brilliant.  He's the smart one out of the--who's that dogfaced guy?  He's the smart one out of the Affleck-Damon pair.

If he boned-up on a more objective brand of politics--the kind not based on attitude and in-group thinking--and if he took a Reagan-esque right turn, he could run for anything.  Any.  Office.

429 What is super funny is that Mr Charles Johnson thinks he found the cropped photos, but if he bothered to read other blogs (except for mentions of his name), especially overseas blogs, and especially the comments, he would have found that other blogs and commenters have found photoshop fauxtos on news items related to the fauxtilla - like replicating people in photos of crowds protesting the Israeli intervention.

In other words, Johnson's latest "catch" is really just a yawn compared to deliberate manipulation/composition of false images elswhere. But then, Johnson has never lifted his eyes higher than his gonads.  I never understood his popularity in the past; he has been, is, and always will be about himself.

CJ is a creepy slimy slug in the garden of life. Getting banned for disagreing with him was a good thing for me. I found this blog, much more fun and interesting then LGF. I mostly lurk and read the comments (usually hilarious) but I have to say I wouldn't let a closed minded asshat like CJ get to me. Most sites worth reading have taken him off their blogrolls which is a good thing. He just like "advertising" his drama to get traffic. CJ calls other people haters when he's the biggest hater of all.

Personally, I prefer the link to the blog, rather than the original article.  If I'm interested enough, I don't mind a trip to the original source.  I try to keep accessing certain "originals" sites to a minimum.  I really don't like adding "hits"

Posted by: Lemon Kitten at June 12, 2010 07:15 PM (0fzsA)

- - - -

Oh, wow. Flashback. That was when Maddow was on "Meet the Press" and  shocked everyone -- I remember David Brooks even being dumbfounded -- by doing the third-hand guilt-by-association on Palin. What's particularly weird about that incident is that Maddow often has Dave Weigel on her show, and I've been beer buddies with Weigel since 2006 or so.

What the LGFers can't seem to understand is that not everything knowable can be learned via Internet. The Southern Poverty Law Center, among others, devoted considerable effort to assembling an online portrait of me as an Evil Menace and, frankly, it was quite an education to discover how I'd unwittingly lent myself to that depiction.

The SPLC in particular, and liberals in general, were only interested in me circa 2000-08 as a weapon with which to attack The Washington Times and, by extension, to impugn those nasty evil Republicans. Because my job was news, and not opinion, I was under orders to shut my mouth and not respond, not to explain, not to defend, etc. As unpleasant as that enforced silence was, I had time to reflect about what had happened, what it meant, and to think how I'd respond if it ever happened again.

Some of my blog friends are friends with Zombie (whom I've never met) and had referenced Zombie vis-a-vis the LGF episode, suggesting that I'd best be walking the straight path lest Zombie decide I was under-the-bus-worthy because, given the choice between me and Zombie, I wasn't all that important to them.

So whoever Zombie is, there's a lot of righteous blog-karma there. And for CJ to ban Zombie was therefore quite stupid.

How many of the commenters on that October '09 thread have subsequently been banished from LGF? Didn't Irish Rose at last get herself clobbered with the Banning Stick?

Ace -

I found your site a few years ago through LGF, and after finding your site much more interesting, dropped LGF like a hot rock. Haven't been back since, and haven't missed the "LGF Experience", either.

Keep up the good work!

436 Guess it's just as well that I got the heave-ho two months ago.  This is too much drama for me.
