Bobby Jindal: Drilling Moratorium Arbitrary, Capricious, and Kinda Stupid
— Dave in Texas

Good stuff.

Add oversight, more inspections, sure, that makes sense and is absolutely do-able. But shutting down production adds "insult to injury".

To ensure that such a disaster does not happen again, should the federal government increase oversight, or require additional and better equipment or on-site federal inspectors, or even temporarily pause drilling at specific rigs for additional reviews? Of course. Could it? Of course. But by simply stopping all deepwater drilling, federal officials appear more interested in ideology and scoring political points -- as they have done with the misguided cap-and-trade legislation -- at the expense of Americans who derive their livelihood from the energy industry.

He also points out two losses in court ought to get the Feds to rethink matters, and then he points out it won't.

I can't help but wonder how much embarrassment plays a role in Obama's thick-headedness here. But then that would get me to speculating on the various other factors involved (ineptitude and malice for example), and that all makes my brain hurt thinkin about it.

Do we really want Toonces trying to pay what he owes Soros from the public treasury? Just the vig on that has to be running huge at this point.

None.  The Indonesian Imbecile is impervious to embarrassment or humiliation.  His actions around the oil spill are driven by nothing other than The Precedent's great hate of America and desire to muck everything up, as much as possible.

As far as embarrassment, though, The Precedent actually likes to embarrass himself while allegedly representing the Oval Office (as he did with the Copenhagen Olympics fiasco, for instance) because that accrues to the destruction of the office of the Presidency.

The Precedent ony ever asks himself one thing before making any decision: "Will it really hurt America?"  As long as this is satisfied, The Precedent is good to go.

23 I'm coming to the conclusion that Osama Obama's motives are more sinister than most people are willing to believe.

It's not that he opposes drilling -- that's just Green Totalitarianism at work, using his position to force a destructive agenda on us.

But a few orders given BP and the various government agencies involved would have permitted faster capping of the well and much faster cleanup of the spreading oil. This has been pointed out many times.

Instead, as he has with the problem of illegals, the Traitor-in-Chief is using all his efforts to block a positive response.

That's enough for impeachment and imprisonment.

If I hear the Mohammedan Mouthpiece arrogantly talking again about how "we" are (e.g. he is) making things better, stopping the leak, fixing everything in sight, I'm going to vomit.

42 Obama and his minions are driven by one agenda - and they will advance it as hard and fast as they can, because they can right now, and fear they will not be able to, later.  And, of course, once effected, the New Order will be very hard to undo,  because people like those at Hot Air won't stand for real change in the System - change involving a change in the electorate from the box-of-rox types to those who are really responsible for producing.

That agenda is implementation of socialism, and destruction of capitalism (the free market - or freedom, period).  It is being achieved in two major ways: (i) creation of new and better class divisions (a la the preachings of Karl Marx, etc.), and (ii) implementation of anti-business regulation (taxes, bureaucracies, what-have-you).  The drilling moratorium is simply a step toward achieving the central agenda.  Lord Zero doesn't give a rip about the Gulf, or about oil (except insofar as he can hurt business  by limiting access to it).  And he's obviously going to keep after it as hard and fast as he can - he'll try to maintain power as long as possible by lying about what he's doing, but "embarrassment" isn't going to slow him down.

45 At first I used to think Oboe was "evil". You know, plotting against us all. But I come to the conclusion that most of his actions can easily be explained by lack of experience. He was brought up in an insular manner and his formative experiences are within academia and the Chicago machine. He simply is incapable of understanding that the "norm" only applies within those small worlds. "Punishing" political opponents is something that "works" on the small scale of Chicago local politics, it's not something the POTUS does to states run by the opposition party (see the oil spill in the Gulf). Running legislation roughshod through the local city council or state legislature, over the objections of the public, make be the way things are done in Chicago/Illinois; but that isn't going to fly for long, with Congress and the American public. His problem, with trying to act as he did at the local level, is that at that level, there was always someone at a higher level to save you from your worse excesses. Now he is that higher level.  He doesn't even have any experience as a Senator to fall back on; all he has is: "What did I do back in Illinois"?  Or "How did it work back in college"?

I have to respectfully disagree, all over the place.

Additional government oversight? Hell, I thought this guy was supposed to be a Conservative! He's either blowing smoke, for the sake of pandering to populism, or a hypocrite.  Let me 'splain.

There is already plenty of govt oversight, and if this disaster shows us anything, it's that govt oversight is especially ineffective. So what's the answer? Surely something must be done, right?

Well, yes and no. It's very simple. If you don't watch where you're going, and you walk into a wall, and bang your head, what do you do? Start pointing fingers, with indignant outrage? (OK, maybe you do, but it doesn't help.) Outlaw walking? Pass a law requiring some govt leach to follow you around and make sure you're looking where you're going? Surely something must be done to keep you from busting open your head again!

Well, duh! The thing is, when you do such a careless thing it hurts! And then you do this little thing called learning that you need to be more careful - a purely natural phenomenon that requires no act of Congress or govt bureaucrats at all!!  You don't do it again, because you've learned that - it hurts! It's tricky, I know.

In the business world, this is a little thing called capitalism. If a major screw-up like this costs a company billions of dollars - even to the point of threatening the company's solvency - you can be damn sure that this company is going to be damn sure not to let it happen again. Or they'll just go out of business (which is another way to weed out the careless). No act of Congress required!

Well, almost.  The thing is, Congress passed a law limiting the liability for this kind of disaster - a law that, in keeping with the current popular rejection of the Rule of Law, has been ignored.  Get rid of that damn law!! The gov't has literally encouraged being careless in drilling, via this law.  So the answer is to put the oversight in their hands?

Then he finishes up with the phrase, "at the expense of Americans who derive their livelihood from the energy industry." What is he, a Union president? How about "the expense of Americans who need the damn oil?" This hurts all of us! I wouldn't call it adding "insult to injury". Adding production halts to more regulation is adding "injury to insult".

One more thing, on a side note. How come I haven't heard anybody apply the following line of reasoning:

The reason this was such a big disaster was that there was no technology readily available to stop the leak from a broken pipe. Apparently this technology has now been developed, and works, so that means that the solution to having this kind of problem has already been found!

If the govt still wants to stick its nose in and do something, it should be to require that this technology be at the ready when a similar drilling situation presents itself. (Although, with their billions of dollars of liability at risk, I personally don't think an oil compnay should really need the govt to tell them to do that). Also, they might want to re-think those stupid EPA rules that effectively disallow removing most of the oil from the ocean surface, and that law that limits an oil company's liability. In other words, they should be less involved, not more.

Seem like I never hear about anybody looking to launch some massive genealogical project to determine who in the world is a descendant of "white southerners." (BTW, only a fraction of "white Southerners" had slaves, and there was some lesser amount of slavery in the North before it was outlawed state-by-state some decades before the Civil War.) The fact that they're looking to lump all white people into a group who "benefitted" from slavery, in some indirect fashion (a fashion not so different from "trickle-down" theory, BTW), belies how disingenuous and racist this movement is. They don't really care who is "responsible" (as if the descendants can morally be held responsible for the sins of their ancestors in the first place).

Similarly, they don't care who "inherits" the victimhood. There is no similar project to determine who are descendants of slaves, and no suggestion that the fraction of one's slave ancestry determine one's share in the restitution. Probably a guy like Obama - whose ancestry is clearly 100% free of any American slaves - would probably be eligible, in any plan put forward, simply because half his ancestry is black African.  Again, the racism is apparent.

And do you hear about anybody looking for reparations for non-American slavery? Not-so-much. Why? In the words of one famous bank robber, "It's where the money is."

This is just a racist money-grab, trying to cash in on "white guilt" over slavery. I doubt most slave descendants could even name one of their slave ancestors.
