— Gabriel Malor Inception scores, Sorcerer's Apprentice becomes the latest Disney and Nic Cage bomb.
I saw Inception on Friday and it's definitely worth seeing in theaters. All the folks who incessantly complain about recycled Hollywood films or politically-motivated films will have nothing to bitch about with Inception. And it's by moron favorite Christopher Nolan with an awesome cast. It brought in $60 million, leading the weekend.
I did not see Sorcerer's Apprentice and I'll tell you why: Nicolas Cage. I loved National Treasure and maybe if I've been drinking I'll watch the Rock, but everything else this dude has ever been in has been awful. The sad thing is, Apprentice might have been okay, except for Cage. Same annoying "hyuck hyuck", but a new wig for every film. Oy. Poor Jay Baruchel. Anyway, Apprentice only earned $17 million this weekend, so it's unlikely to ever meet its $150 million budget. Oops.

I have had friends (women) who've adored Nicholas Cage. I really liked Vampire's Kiss; I think it's hilarious. I liked him in Valley Girl; I liked his weirdo turn in Peggy Sue ( I thought his aching to be Fabian was much fun). And....I can't think of anything else off hand. I loathed Leaving Las Vegas....I was watching my watch and hoping he'd die soon so I could go home without ditching my co-watcher.

I don't know, I liked "Knowing". But Nat Treasure 2 was a big letdown, but I thought it was the plot that sucked, not Cage.

I kept wondering what a movie like that would have been in the hands of someone like Stephen Chow, and that really drove home how dull and banal it was.
And the title? Let's just say it stems from a famous sequence from another Disney film, that was re-used for no reason whatsoever.

It will be a whole lotta' years before the impression of Raising Arizona wears off.
Yeah. It's been a while. But that movie was an example of what he can do.
Now, I suspect, he takes any job that will pay the bills (or, almost pay the bills).
Posted by: jmflynny at July 18, 2010 03:10 PM (NHK5s)
Uh, no. Raising Arizona was excellent. As was Adaptation. Con Air isn't high art, but as an actioner, it's a lot of fun. Moonstruck was pretty good, and so was Red Rock West.
Of course, if you don't like the star of a movie, you're not going to like it even if it's good. If you can't stand Pacino and Brando, even The Godfather comes across as an insufferable mess. But that don't make it so...

OK, I really liked The Rock. Pissed me off that Michael Biehn, one of my favorite actors, got smoked early, but Ed Harris is also one of my favorites. Throw in Connery and Cage? Fucking epic win for me.
Con Air was a ridiculous premise (though a guy from 20th SFG got locked up the same way years ago, killed a guy in a bar fight in Ocean City) , still liked it. Then again it threw in elements of Grosse Pointe Blank with Cusack. I would hate John Cusack in real life because he's a left-wing piece of shit, but I liked his character.
Lord of War was one of my all-time favorite movies, again, because I am a sick warmongering fucktard.
And I love the National Treasure movies. I like a little blind love of country now and then. The climax of the first one will legitimately choke me up despite having seen it fifteen times. The second one, my wife will pause it and use Diane Kruger's relationship arguments on me. It's a real couple's film series for us. I'm waiting for #3.
I'll probably go see Sorceror's Apprentice just to support Nic Cage because he needs a few bucks.

Now, Dreamscape, that was a fucking awesome move. Dennis Quaid, Max von Sydow, Christopher Plummer. Eddie "Green Acres" Albert as the president. That "Warriors, come out and play" guy as the villain. I'd rather watch Dreamscape for the 1000th time than some Leonardo DiScatfetish piece of crap.

It's a pointless mind-fuck that "explores" the topic of dreams vs. reality to a depth of approximately one millimeter. The stakes are zilch, same for the emotional hook, the characters are constantly explaining the plot to each other, the music amps up nothing, the ice fight scene has no progress, the dream content are unimaginative, the rules are random, and you've seen this movie before when it was Sphere.

He was Nicholas Coppola in "Fast Times". He was one of the three dudes that came into All-American Burger and took their shirts off. Anthony Edwards, Spicoli Penn, and Nicholas. No talking except for "No shoes, no shirts, no DICE!"
Sorry to nitpick, but he wasn't in the stoner clique--he was one of Brad's buddies and worked at All-American Burger (you see him briefly when Brad's getting chewed out right before he's fired). You might be thinking of Eric Stoltz, who was in the clique with Spicoli and Anthony Edwards.
He's only in a couple of scenes beside the restaurant, and if you blink, you miss him--the first day of school, when he does the low-five slap with Brad after Brad brags about getting ready to pay the car off; in the gym when Brad's geeky friend begs for a job at All-American Burger; and at the football game, clapping in the stands.

I may duck & run mentioning this, but I liked him in It Could Happen to You. Sappy and no range as an actor. But I do like it. Cage is a very quirky individual. He may not threaten the likes of Sir Olivier or the like...but I like him.

Along with the booby shot scene with Kate what's-her-face...She has NOICE knockers.
I did like DiCaprio in The Aviator and in Shutter Island. But nothing else really.
I liked Kick Ass, thought it was awesome, but that movie was way more about the younger actors than Cage, his character was kinda filler IMNSHO.

Anyway, Cage's typical acting style works really well here in this "fish out of water" story of a painfully honest drifter wandering into a contract hit.
BTW, he was pretty good in Cotton Club too, as Richard Gere's younger brother. Even Richard Gere was good in that one.

Over 100 posts and no love for Wild At Heart? Cage wears Brando's snakeskin jacket from the Fugitive Kind and gets to bang Laura Dern. With Diane Ladd and an over the top Willem Dafoe. Dafoe's scene with Dern is classic Lynch psycho sexual weirdness, with a cherry on top.

I tried to watch 'The Outlaw Josey Wales' last night and I couldn't do it. I LOVE that movie...just couldn't hang in there.

Took my youngest daughter to Toy Story 3 yesterday, matinee show. Spent $8 on 2 tickets and $15 on lg popcorn and 2 lg drinks, saving $0.75 because it was a packaged combo.
Daughter, the math whiz, calculated it would cost $70+ to take the entire de Monet clan.
She now understands better why drinks and popcorn at the movie theatre are an occasional treat and why Dad so encourages sharing.

>>I like enough of them, to be sure, but not enough to watch more than 20-30 minutes before I wish I was doing anything else.
Yeh, I don't have the attention span to enjoy most movies.
Went to the theater last week for the first time in about 10 years.
It didn't do much for me. $30 (for three people) to see the 2-D version of Toy Story 3. The theater was tiny and the back rows were crowded, so we were close enough that I had to look up the whole time.
Plus, the movie was hard on the emotions of a tired and sick mom. All about growing up and going away and shit.

Gator, what did you do?
Not proud of it, but I scared the bejeezus out of a couple of twenty something douchenozzles. Can't let that happen anymore. But, the cop was cool and everyone in the theater backed me up after they said I hit them. They were escorted out and I watched the rest of the movie. A lot of people clapped when I came back in after my interrogation and they walked those two eight year olds out.
I kid. I kid. They were walked out, though. Felt good.

Oh I will be seeing Ramona and Beezus with my niece. She's at the age where she's reading Clearly so that's fun and I have to say I'm looking forward to that.
That reminds me of the last movie I probably saw in the theater--Kit Kittredge-An American Girl. She got a good look at what the Depression was like and it took place in Cincinnati that was neat (we obviously don't get a lot of movies about our little city!) . Although as always, the books are better.

OT: More hypocrisy... they really don't think they are of the people.
Before Obama picked him to be our new Medicare czar, Berwick was the chief executive officer of an outfit he founded called the Institute for Health Care Improvement (IHI). IHI bills itself as a nonprofit charity, but it seems to do an awful lot of work on behalf of for-profit entities. As CEO of this enterprise, Dr. Berwick earned a cool $2.3 million in 2008. But, more to the point, IHI will provide him with private health care coverage during his declining years: “The Institute created a postretirement health benefit plan for its chief executive officer (CEO). It provides the CEO and his spouse medical insurance from retirement until death.”

But this film is exactly that! It's nonstop blatant tongue in cheek references to cinema classics. Titanic, The Usual Suspects, The Matrix, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Casablanca, The Italian Job. You could predict the plot by who was in the scene; it was liking watching an awards ceremony. It was very smug, "We all share the same dreams, because we all watch the same films." But Nolan is great, and it's an entertaining movie. Definitely worth the price of admission. Sometimes it seemed a bit masturbatory (five minutes feels like thirty in dream time.) The nice thing was that as far as politics goes, everyone freely admits that communism is straight up theft. This was a very polished B flick, the Mercedes ad aesthetic added to Scary Movie.
