— Ace No, seriously.
Chief executives of several major corporations, including Hewlett-Packard, Boeing, Disney and News Corp., are joining Mayor Michael Bloomberg to form a coalition advocating for immigration reform — including a path to legal status for all undocumented immigrants now in the United States. The group includes several other big-city mayors and calls itself the Partnership for a New American Economy. It seeks to reframe immigration reform as the solution to repairing and stimulating the economy.
Bloomberg and Rupert Murdoch, chairman and CEO of News Corp., appeared together Thursday on Fox News to discuss the effort.
Why single FoxNews out? Because it's one of the few actors here where a boycott would actually have a big influence.
My problem here is that Murdoch's behind the scenes influence -- money, mostly -- probably carries a lot more weight than his viewers' opposition to this, even if his news channel is friendly to that opposition. And I don't really want him carrying the flag for this.

Whatever the big elite richer than God uber-bubble-dwellers think is a good idea for the rest of us, we should do the opposite.
Why can't we abide by our laws and go the LEGAL immigration route?
Aren't we just inviting the entire world to come here?
The entire world on the American Tax payer dole? How is this a good idea?

The illegals will not be net tax payers, they will become net tax receivers. Democrat voters. Free goodies will be bestowed upon them.
Illegal immigrants already enjoy much of our generosity and free shit.
I feel sorry for all of the kind people who abide by the law and come here legally. What a slap in the face.

Jane - yes. TWC has become truly useless. They force you to use their website if you want weather info (which I don't; I use AccuWeather). And I think Dish Network noticed this problem.
Briefly - very briefly - Dish added in a new, alternate weather channel station that ran constant national rotation of weather info. What TWC used to be back in 1990.
About a week later, it was gone, replaced with smooth jazz and a display announcing that Dish was working with TWC to provide a separate channel dedicated entirely to regional weather info.
Haven't seen anything since, though. This was maybe a month ago...

"If you want to solve the unemployment problem in America, you have to open the doors to immigrants who will come here, create businesses, because when the tide comes in, everybody's boat rises"
Adding more people isn't a good solution to aleviating a large pool of unemployed people. It's true that immigrants create businesses. But why would anyone expect immigrants who have come here illegally to be able to create a new business and employ others?
Why wouldn't they have immigrated legally then?
Additionally, I've found that many ethnic minorities, particularly the ones who don't want to learn English and live their lives using English, usually create jobs that cater exclusively to their ethnic group which builds a larger beach head for that non-assimilating culture to expand into a growing cultural problem.

Ace: "My problem here is that Murdoch's behind the scenes influence -- money, mostly -- probably carries a lot more weight than his viewers' opposition to this..."
Also, what kind of pressure does it put on staff, especially lower level producers, to know that your boss is cold to your advancing illegal alien news? Sure, Beck might have the pull and the balls to keep up reporting, but anyone else? Even O'Reilly, who talks a big game, will yield to Murdoch's preferences.
These lowest-common-denominator seeking employers tossing aside lawful immigration policy are asking for trouble. Maybe legal Americans should give it to them.

Wander into the IS portion of most large firms, and see how many delightful green-card-holding people of Indian and Pakistani origin you meet, taking advantage of the many opportunities available in this country for people willing to for much less than those US born & educated types expect. And, sink my putt, for a coincidence most of the 'comprehensive' immigration plans blow the lid off of green card restrictions. Can't fault the people making the trip in the hopes of a better life, but does it make any sense to import people to work jobs out-of-work professionals in this country could do? Only when the government types that set the quotas rely on the business bigwigs for that sweet, sweet campaign cash. Both parties are in this travesty up to their necks.

Geez - didn't these guys at the LA TImes get the memo about how the whole point of using the term "undocumented immigrant" was to gloss over the part about these folks being law-breakers? Next thing you know, they'll admit to the term "immgrant" being inaccurate and presumptuous. Maybe once the Mexican takeover of LA is complete, their uber-"educated" self-proclaimed elits will start using the correct term, "illegal alien" - and brag about it.

No one ever had a problem with immigrants. That was never the issue.
Then what is the issue? Here's my guess: There are a lot of people in the country illegally, and practically all of them are going to stay here, legally or not.
The prevalent solution is the status quo; do nothing. Unfortunately, that doesn't really work. The next biggest solution involves securing the borders and deporting illegal aliens. It sounds great, but that doesn't really work either.
I don't know what exactly Bloomberg plans -- but it has to be better than option 1 or option 2.

I would like to see how many immigrants go on disability once they are eligible. How many fly home regularly on Boeing planes? How much will this increase demand for hp medical devices? This is the data that counteracts their BS.
The line always used in the WSJ is that they create jobs and are good citizens, etc. but most restrictionists have little or no problem with allowing highly educated job creators immigrate. We have problems with open borders, out of control, anchor baby, soon to be on the dole immigrants.

"Last night, Feldman served as a celebrity judge at a cooking contest at a school gymnasium in Uptown New Orleans. Due to the threats, Feldman was accompanied by a federal marshal security team.
"It is a sad indictment of our society today that a judge with such a sterling record of integrity and service to his country would be subject to such threats. Feldman was appointed to the federal bench by President Reagan in 1983. Today, he is in the eye of a political hurricane unlike anything he has ever experienced.
"Much of the sensational reporting on FeldmanÂ’s investments was based on outdated information. The Judge was blasted for owning stock in Transocean, Ltd and Halliburton, two of the major companies involved in the Deepwater Horizon disaster. Feldman owned those stocks in 2008; however, he sold those shares long before issuing his ruling this week. In fact, this updated information will be released in the next report on his stock holdings.
"If Feldman held financial interests in any of companies involved in the lawsuit or the Deepwater Horizon rig, he would not have been allowed the take the case. The 5th District Court uses a sophisticated computer system to check whether judges have a conflict of interest in any legal proceeding. This system automatically determines whether a judge needs to be recused from a particular case. In this lawsuit, Feldman was allowed to take the case because he did not own any stock related to the parties involved."

You know what would go a long way to healing our economy? Paying down the national debt. You know a good way to pay down the national debt? A wealth tax. Let's say, 100% of all assets over $2 million should help pay the debt and shore up Social Security and Medicare. Those assholes can lobby for cheaper pool boys and gardeners when unemployment is at 10%. We can lobby to have their wealth confiscated.
We really are in a situation where most of the extremely wealthy are conspiring with a good chunk of the poor to destroy the middle class.

Deportation works!
Some 750 agents targeted agricultural areas with a goal of 1000 apprehensions per day. By the end of July, over 50,000 immigrants were caught in the two states. An estimated 488,000 illegal immigrants are claimed to have left voluntarily, for fear of being apprehended.
Can we kill that lie that deportation "does not work", because it most certainly does, when it's allowed to work.
Bill Chambers, who worked for a combined 33 years for the Border Patrol and the then-called US Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), says politically powerful people are still fueling the flow of illegals.
During the 1950s, however, this "Good Old Boy" system changed under Eisenhower – if only for about 10 years.
In 1954, Ike appointed retired Gen. Joseph "Jumpin' Joe" Swing, a former West Point classmate and veteran of the 101st Airborne, as the new INS commissioner.
Influential politicians, including Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson (D) of Texas and Sen. Pat McCarran (D) of Nevada, favored open borders, and were dead set against strong border enforcement, Brownell said. But General Swing's close connections to the president shielded him – and the Border Patrol – from meddling by powerful political and corporate interests.

This is idiotic. In order for them to be subject to tax laws, they would have to appear on the radar of the IRS. Most do not now. And there's no proof that we'll suddenly obtain the political will to forcibly register those that do not comply. That's why immigration law is intertwined here. We won't send forth Federal agencies to find those working under the table or in the shadow economy if we talking about immigration, but the same government will somehow do exactly that where payroll taxes are concerned.

Securing the borders and deporting illegal aliens doesn't work at all. As a practical policy, it is an absolute failure.
Better?

And we just take your word for it FireHorse? No thanks.
That's up to you. Here's another idea: The government can pass more meaningless laws that it doesn't intend to enforce.
By the way, the U.S government isn't simply neglecting its duty in enforcing current immigration laws. It's going out of it's way to make sure that these laws aren't enforced by anyone at any level.
Yes?

From NRO's Corner blog:
Billionaires for Open Borders [Mark Krikorian]
New York mayor Michael Bloomberg has recruited Rupert Murdoch and other CEOs of multinational corporations to lobby for amnesty and increased immigration. Here's the video of Bloomberg and Murdoch being interviewed by one of Murdoch's Fox employees — hard-hitting accountability journalism!
You can imagine the pitch Bloomberg made to these guys — we need illegals to take care of our golf courses! And I'm not just making that up; he's actually made just that argument:
"You and I are beneficiaries of these jobs," Bloomberg told his co-host, John Gambling. "You and I both play golf. Who takes care of the greens and the fairways in your golf course?"
He should call his new coalition "Golfers for Illegal Immigration."

FireHorse, I refuted your argument in my post 292
Mass deportation has been tried in 1954-1955, and IT WORKS.
It also worked for the "Great Mexican Repatriation" between 1929 - 1939.
Two historical instances in this country, both in the 20th century, that proves mass deportation of Mexicans works.

Because immigration laws aren't taken seriously by the government.
Tax laws are.
Oh dear, you are gullible.
Do you think the landscapers and construction workers pay taxes on their cash business? I got a neighbor in stucco with a 100k car in his garage and word is he's on food stamps.

We really are in a situation where most of the extremely wealthy are conspiring with a good chunk of the poor to destroy the middle class.
That's what it's all about.
The middle class in this country is large and wealthy enough that it competes with the rich for scarce resources.
They don't much like that. Nor do they like us investing.
They'd much prefer a serf class and an upper class. Easier to control and less competition for resources.
The game today seems to be to steal from the middle class and hand it to the poor who, being the ultimate consumers, quickly spend it right back into the hands of the upper class.
Let the middle class keep their money and they start getting funny ideas about investing and growing it. Or even starting their own companies. Can't have that.

Ineffectual or hostile government, marauding and violent illegal invaders and no help in sight.
California was a beautiful place to live, once. Damn.

It would be good to bring in qualified immigrants when we have a growing economy. Even Mexico was trying to keep good people to help their GDP.
But in a weak economy it makes no sense to throw tens of millions on the welfare/Medicare/Medicaid rolls ... and to encourage the whole world to come get "free" health care, a right to a house and government job, and guaranteed benefits for life.
Close the borders, send illegal aliens home, raise retirement to 72, and show the world a model of how capitalism can work.
Of course we don't have real capitalism, but a mix with socialism ... but even with 50% capitalism and less corruption ... we would rule the world.

You are referring to the failure of the federal gov't to do its job, it is not the same thing.
True, KG. But neither is it a failure resulting from negligence or incompetence or a shortage of resources. It's much worse than that. A law is only as good as the willingness to see that it's followed. That's why I say our immigrations laws have utterly failed. They're being undermined by too many public servants.

292 Jim in San Diego: Conditions are a lot different nowadays. Just because something worked 50 years ago doesn't mean that it's even possible now. (And right now, with Obama as president and Holder as AG, it's impossible.)

So you're saying that the biggest obstacle is politics. I don't think anyone would disagree with that. But that doesn't mean it's logistically impossible.

I saw them on Fox this morning and it made my blood boil. Both of them were casting this as a debate between those who are for immigration versus those who are against immigration. Their talking points were aimed at helping to convince those who are anti immigration that these people (the illegals) are really nothing to worry about, that they are hard working and pay taxes.
I will join in any boycott against any and all corporations and cities who join in this effort. Fox network included. These people are all liars. The first and foremost issue is border security and not immigration. We don't have an immigration problem. We have a problem that our southern border is being over run.

#292, to be pedantic, Joe Swing commanded the 11th Airborne Division, the Angels, not the 101st. Both divisions called Fort Campbell home at different times after WWII, though, and no one really remembers the 11th since they deactivated for the last time in 1958 (not counting the experimental airmobile unit at Benning in 1964-65), so confusion happens.
As for me, Boeing has gotten hate mail from me today.

but, to be realistic (s)he/it [pronounced - shit] seems to believe that military force only works in the offensive mode, that all one needs to defeat any nation is to invade unarmed.

I saw it too, and couldn't believe Nanny Bloomberg was actually claiming illegals don't use hospitals or welfare because ( I'm paraphrasing) no one would come here just to live on welfare. What is it with these people that they think we will believe their bullshit lies and ignore what we see with our own eyes?

Hmmm . . . boycott News Corp.? Aren't ads for some of their subsidiaries in the rotation here? Does this mean Ace will be returning that revenue - or is he going to boycott the service that includes their ads?
Seems like a mighty big effort to protest a publicity stunt. Or did you think the fact that several pro-amnesty corporations and politicians "form a group" to do what they are already doing individually was the tipping point that would suddenly change the momentum . . . from, like, 70% against?
If it's all that darned urgent, wouldn't it just be easier to hunt the 30% in favor down like dogs? Or better yet, WITH dogs?
Boycotts are just so metrosexual - but what you and AP do on your own time in the privacy of your own hot tub is none of my business.

When I lived in Bushwick several years ago, an apartment downstairs had at least three families living in a railroad. They lived in the apartment in shifts. In two rooms, since they couldn't get access to the kitchen at all times, they'd set up propane grills. But the kitchen was always open on the weekends when everyone would get together and cook. The grease on the walls was so thick and yellow, and there were roaches crawling everywhere.
