UPDATE: 12:24 edt.
A suspicious package containing a toner cartridge with wires and powder was found during routine screening of cargo in the United Kingdom, prompting authorities to scour three planes and a truck in the United States on Friday. Searches were conducted in Philadelphia, Newark, N.J., and New York City.During a basic security screening process in the United Kingdom, officials found a suspicious item on a cargo plane, according to a U.S. government official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing investigation.
U.K. officials discovered that a toner cartridge on the plane had been manipulated and found wires attached to it and white powder. Tests on the device came back negative for explosives, according to a law enforcement official who also spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the investigation.
Concerns about the possibility of similar and potentially dangerous devices shipped elsewhere prompted officials to check other cargo headed to the U.S.
UPDATE: 11:50 edt-
FNC says they have confirmed that the feds are looking at 'several suspicious' packages from planes in Philly and a small/regional airport in England.
At least on aircrew reported a radiological warning. Crews were checked and cleared of any contamination.
The planes all seem at this point (and it's a fast moving story) to connect back to Yemen.

Neither. Too much vodka this morning.
While I'm glad this (these?) was (were) stopped, I'm going back to what I said on the Metro Bomber thread- can there be any logical argument that says that Barky is doing a good job in the War on Terror? I've lost count of how many (attempted) attacks have target the US just in the last 20 months or so- with none (after 2001) under Bush.
Maybe that "Kill them and disrupt their plans" strategy was a winner after all?

There is still a lot of radioactive crap floating around in the jet streams.

I didn't feel they required mentioning. I was mentioning the attempts, specifically, to highlight that we didn't even have attempted attacks on the US once our security apparati got up and running under Bush. Not ignored or forgotten, but unnecessary to make my point.
Also- kind of hard to stop an Army Major on base from wreaking some havoc if he decides to for any reason- terrorism or not. Which is not to say the "red flags" shouldn't have resulted in better investigation, but even if he hadn't been a terrorist and just "went postal" he'd have done roughly the same amount of damage.

Amen. When are we going to finally say that enough is enough? All we do is swat a few of the worst of them now and again, and meanwhile sit around hoping they'll always be too stupid to successfully carry out another major attack. We all know the one common theme to 99.9% of terrorism is Islam. They're a source of daily misery in every place where they become a significant minority, as shown by the rape/assault waves in major European cities these days. The very least we should do is begin mass deportation of the muslims and their sympathizers.

1. Require every Muslim country to publicly and unequivocably renounce terrorism, specifically against the United States and its citizens worldwide.
2. Require every Muslim country to begin rounding up terrorists, instituting secular school programs focussed on teaching religious tolerance, ending state support for Islam and pro-Islamic laws, and guaranteeing freedom of religious worship to all people and faiths within their borders.
3. Inform any Muslim country that does not undertake these commitments that the next terrorist attack on the United States or its citizens anywhere will be regarded as having originated in that country, and invite their leaders to use their imagination concerning what will happen if the United States is attcked with weapons of mass destruction.

On Friday, U.S. officials participated in a meeting of the Friends of Yemen in New York, marking an important occasion to coordinate international support for Yemen. The meeting also provides a good opportunity to discuss the United StatesÂ’ comprehensive approach to assist Yemen.
the Obama Administration initiated a review of its Yemen policy in the spring of 2009. The result was a comprehensive strategy to address the root causes of instability, and improve governance and the livelihoods of the Yemeni people. As a result, the United States has greatly expanded its economic and humanitarian assistance to the Yemeni people, to approximately $110 million over the past 12 months up from $14.3 million two years before. This includes funds for:
* $67 million for the United States Agency for International Devleopment (USAID) to work in partnership with communities to directly address local needs. This includes health, education, and water projects; mobile health and veterinary clinics; and support for increasing the capacity of local governments to deliver essential services.
* $42.5 million in humanitarian assistance to Yemenis displaced by the conflict in northern Yemen, as well as to refugees in the south.
* more than $2.3 million in grants from the Department of StateÂ’s Middle East Partnership Initiative to local Yemeni organizations to support an inclusive democratic process.
As President Obama recently wrote, “We are also committed to helping Yemen achieve a future that builds upon the extraordinary talents of its people and the richness of its history…I am convinced that the people of Yemen can do more than overcome the threats that they face – they can build a future of greater peace and opportunity for their children.”
Plan's working like a charm, I see.....

Obviously Al Qaeda is just a convenient 'fall guy' or 'patsy' for today's activities. We have only to apply the conspiracy mongerers' favorite analysis methodology to determine this quite conclusively: CUI BONO.
Who benefits.
Al Qaeda doesn't benefit from this at all. So we have to ask -- why benefits from this? FED EX, as the direct competitor, clearly. But also those shadowy Federal government agencies which exist to police and control us, they also benefit by raising the fear level among all people. Remember -- FED EX actually stands for FEDERAL Express.
FEDERAL Express. FEDERAL agencies.
It doesn't get clearer. But there is more than just the similarity of the names. MUCH more -- there is mathematical proof! Today is October 29. 10/29/10. Divide 10 by ten, and you have 1, subtract that from the 29 to get 28. Divide 28 by 10, and you have 2.8. That's two point eight. There are twenty eight letters in the the phrase FEDERAL EXPRESS FEDERAL AGENCIES. Divide that by ten and you have ... Two. Point. Eight. Two, as in two hands; eight as in eight fingers, four on each hand (excluding thumbs, which aren't fingers). Two hands. Eight fingers. CLEARLY FED EX is now operating as part of the shadowy federal government cabal. But we have here only hands and fingers, who is the head? For occultic and numeristic reasons too convoluted and arcane to discuss here, the head is obviously KARL ROVE.
But you probably guessed that already.

If your read Bin Laden's writings from before 9/11, you will see that a large part of his strategy to attack the west is to attack its economic infrastructure... and by using Fear, force it to become to expensive to do business.
Forcing all Packages on every plane to be inspected would make shipments much more expensive, and slow them down as well...
Even a FAKE attack will ensure that "our" Government will once more over react, as they have to appear to do somthing...
And any shock to the American economy, could push us over the edge of the current economic abyss.
Not good folks.

Yeah, yeah. It's not like al qaeda is in Yemen, or anything. And even if they were, I'm told that we need not worry about them.
Now this reall distrubs me: did anyone check out the side bar link about UK college so-called "straight" students:
Based on in-depth interviews of 145 British university and high-school students, Anderson and his colleagues discovered that 89 percent had kissed a male heterosexual friend on the lips at some point. A total of 37 percent had engaged in "sustained" kissing with another man, Anderson said. The men all identified as straight, and they didn't see the kisses as sexual.
"These men have lost their homophobia," Anderson said. "They're no longer afraid to be thought gay by their behaviors, and they enjoy intimacy with their friends, just the same as women."
WTF? This is just wrong.
I'm not the least bit homphobic, but I may start if I have to liplock another dude to prove it someday.
The article goes on to say:
"Apparently assured by the knowledge any behavior could never label them gay, all 145 of the self identified straight men claimed to have engaged in oral sex with another straght male while listenning to the Pet Shop Boys and dreaming of Marc Rubio."

I've been sitting here thinking about this from the raghead's perspective(I denounce myself) and what the possible acceptable outcomes to this would be. The easiest and most obvious one at least to me is, get the packages on the planes and drop them from the skies. Don't have to worry about security at the backend doing what they're doing right now, which is package discovery and disposal. Once those packages are in the air, boom down comes the targets, terror achieved.

Actually, AQ and the jihadis don't care much whether their bombs make it through and blow up, or not. The jihadis are more than satisfied if the threat of bombs being shipped forces our shipping to grind to a halt or just cost too much to run. If the bombs blow up, it's gravy for mohammed, but even if they don't, just the threat is enough for them. Then they can just move on to some other threat, to stop more economic activity and cost us more, in terms of money and time, to maintain our society.

But I do think that this administration, which makes Nixon look like a girl scout, would certainly consider finding ways to exploit it.
And, yeah, there is that rally around the flag effect, but I'm thinking that in this case the more likely scenario is turnout suppression from fear/uncertainty until/unless something blows up, at which point you'd get the redwhiteblue effect.

and then they showed a map of UPS facilities and such and man they are busy little beavers.....
I also heard that yesterday or this morning there was a package left in I think DC and that caused a ruckus.....but I was switching channels on that one so it could be all wrong...
Really no kidding "If you see something, say something" is truly truly important

The feds here think something is coming. They always say that, but they look like they mean it this time. Makes sense, as they would need time to adjust to the new POTUS and his national security policies - or lack thereof - which may be why 9-11 was almost two years into Bush's term. Timing is right.

Best comment of the day. In a lot of places - Philly in particular - manpower is at an all-time low. We need people to notify us if they see anything they think is out of sorts. We'd rather go to a false alarm then go after something happened.

A law enforcement source tells CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine the word is out to synagogues in Chicago not to accept UPS packages from east of New York. The are asked to call Chicago Police if any delivery is attempted.
FBI spokesman Ross Rice added that while there are no identifiable or specific threats to the Chicago area, all churches, synagogues and mosques in the area are being warned to be vigilant for unsolicited or unexpected packages, especially those originating from overseas locations.
Pretty sure the mosques don't have anything much to worry about. But hey, I guess we have to be "inclusive" in our terror warnings so certain groups don't feel profiled -- or something.

Um, wasn't it like 8 months? I think the weakness potentially exploited here isn't due to turnover, but the utter collapse of the Obama Presidency.

My serfs fellow Americans, you must fight the irrational fear and vote for the Big Ds in a week. Fight your real enemies--the GOP.
BTW, I'll be repeating this message on Monday to screw up football and the World Series. Thank you.

AP
WASHINGTON – U.S. officials say two military fighter jets are escorting a commercial airliner from the Canadian border to New York City. The plane is carrying cargo from Yemen.
The officials said there is no known threat associated with the plane, but it was being escorted to John F. Kennedy International Airport as a cautionary move. It was not clear if the plane had landed yet.
Uh -- is escorting the plan towards the largest city in America a good idea? How about letting it land somewhere a bit less populated and take a looksie first.
