Breaking: Eric Massa (D-NY) Resigning
— DrewM

One less yes vote for ObamaReidPelosi care!

Surely you remember our friend Rep. Eric Massa. I didn't think you can get away with the whole, 'health problems and sexual harassment' thing with a simple retirement in 10 months.

The district he represents in NY is trending Republican but it's likely this whole health care thing will be over one way or another by the time a replacement is seated. So, this is one less yes vote but it also lowers the number necessary to pass the bill. Does that even out in the wash or just lowers the number of 'no' votes Pelosi needs to flip to 'yes'?

Right... [ace] But it's also one gone from the possible no-to-yes list.

More [DrewM.]: Massa's statement

In a statement released Friday, Massa directly addressed the ethics issue for the first time, acknowledging that he used language that might have made staffers uncomfortable. But he did not specifically address any specific sexual harassment allegations.

“I own this reality. There is no doubt in my mind that I did in fact, use language in the privacy of my own home and in my inner office that, after 24 years in the Navy, might make a Chief Petty Officer feel uncomfortable,” Massa said. “In fact, there is no doubt that this Ethics issue is my fault and mine alone. But in the incredibly toxic atmosphere that is Washington D.C., with the destruction of our elected leaders having become a blood sport, especially in talk radio and on the internet, there is also no doubt that an Ethics investigation would tear my family and my staff apart.”

That sounds like a little more than some tough language. There are a lot of politicians and high power executives who yell and even degrade subordinates. That usually doesn't fall into the category of tearing one's family apart.

6 The real tragedy is that Massa had to get married and have 2 kids to cover up his rampant homosexuality in order to get elected.

Drew you miss the point. Sure it is one less vote for Obamacare, but now the House only need 216 to pass it instead of 217.

This is bad, not good.

17 I was digging through old news and saw that Gillibrand was appt'd by the gov to replace Hillary in the Senate.

Does anyone know if the governor can pick a new Rep?

Posted by: Y-not at March 05, 2010 11:50 AM (Kn9r7)

18

Hmmm. I suppose if he was a solid "yes" it helps... it slides a yes/no further down the calculus, like connect-four.

Posted by: jdub at March 05, 2010 11:50 AM (t9pKb)

19

I am guessing the Dems told him to get out, as lowering the vote to 216 was more important., i wonder if any other "on the fence" democrats will resign soon.

And and in Massa's case, Fence is the name of a male staffer

Posted by: Ben at March 05, 2010 11:51 AM (wuv1c)

20 All I care about is one less Yes on the Senate bill.

Posted by: arhooley at March 05, 2010 11:51 AM (2zkIP)

21 Did someone say Eric Massa is gonna flip over? Cause I'm ready with the lube.

Posted by: And! Sullivan at March 05, 2010 11:51 AM (PWj+8)

22 So, this is one less yes vote but it also lowers the number necessary to pass the bill. Does that even out in the wash or just lowers the number of 'no' votes Pelosi needs to flip to 'yes'?

Where's enoxo?

I'm too busy making calls (heh, wasted a few cents calling Massa's office about ten minutes ago) to add and subtract.

Posted by: arhooley at March 05, 2010 11:52 AM (2zkIP)

23 Does anyone but me see that Rangel is off the radar just like that, no mention whatsoever of this criminal!

Posted by: 'Nam Grunt at March 05, 2010 11:53 AM (sF1cH)

24 Hadn't Massa voted against O-care before?

Posted by: flurmf at March 05, 2010 11:54 AM (Xx+86)

25 Y-not, here's what I found.

According to the US Constitution and state law, the governor of the state calls for a special election to replace the vacant House seat. The full election-cycle must be followed including political party nominating processes, primary elections and a general election, all held in the congressional district involved. The entire process often takes as long as from three to six months.

Posted by: Tami at March 05, 2010 11:54 AM (VuLos)

26 Eric Massa voted 'no' last time for political cover, and was more than likely going to vote 'yes' this time (he was named one of the Democrats they were pursuing.)

So, I believe it will take a 'yes' vote away from them... BUT... it will also lower the vote  requirement back down to 216.

Posted by: enoxo at March 05, 2010 11:54 AM (l0akn)

27 Does anyone know if the governor can pick a new Rep?

The NY Governor cannot pick a replacement.  Remember when Gillibrand was picked for the Senate the district had to hold an election to choose a replacement.

Posted by: wtfci at March 05, 2010 11:54 AM (+zo63)

28 When is the New York party primary election?

Posted by: wtfci at March 05, 2010 11:55 AM (+zo63)

29 The governor does not appoint a new representative. The Constitution (Article 1, Section 2) provides for the executive to call for an election to fill the seat.

35 I don't care in the least how old Rangel is he should be prosecuted and jailed, and there are many that WILL BE in this admin., just wait and see. The progressives projected about the Bush admin. blah, blah, blah, but we will jail them for their treasonist ways against this great Country!

Posted by: 'Nam Grunt at March 05, 2010 11:58 AM (sF1cH)

36 As far as how this affects the vote totals needed and whether that helps or hurts, think of it like half-games in baseball standings.   When a yes vote leaves but the total needed drops, its about like going down a half game.   If a no vote leaves (Like Deal says he will later this month) that's like going down by a whole game.  And then switches from yes to no or vice versa are whole games.

Posted by: Tom Servo at March 05, 2010 11:58 AM (T1boi)

Posted by: arhooley at March 05, 2010 12:07 PM (2zkIP)

65 This is just terrible!  As a Christian, I am just appalled that this good family man could be drummed out of Congress because of hate and intolerance.  If only we didn't have DADT, Rep. Massa could have been honest about who he was and this tragedy could have been averted.  Instead, he lived in fear as he masqueraded as a straight man.  Oh the pain he must have felt as he lived this heinous lie.   As a concern Christian, I worry that his wife and 3 children may no longer have a roof over their heads or food on their table now that their primary wage earner is no longer working.  This is a terrible, terrible situation.  Jesus called on us to love one another and let he who is without sin cast the first stone.  We all need to come together and lift  this family up to The Lord.  I hope that you will join me in praying for Rep. Massa and the future of his family.  If any of you are interested, please feel free to start some kind of pledge drive so that they are not turned out into the street.  I know a few of you here care as deeply about taking care of our fallen brothers as I am.  So please, give frequently, and give generously to whatever fund anyone should start on Rep. Massa's behalf.  I implore you to do the decent Christian thing.  For when a man stumbles, we should be there to pick him up.  I'd love to start the fund thing, but I will be cloistered in prayer for this family for the next several weeks and incommunicado.  Remember, every little bit helps.

103 What was Big Ben doing in Milledgeville GA? I'm from South GA and the only thing remotely noteworthy about the place is is it was a very early capitol city and is the present location of the state mental hospital. The phrase "going to M'ville" usually meant uncle Wally was walking around town naked wearing Aunt Harriett's hat and hand bag again! Soft, lights, soft music, soft walls.

108 I take back what I said, I was incorrect.

Massa voted 'no' in November because he wants single-payer, or a strong public option--not because of political cover.  He is a progressive, and a few progressives, such as Dennis Kucinich who voted against the bill (because they weren't required for passage) for a statement.

Massa would have voted 'yes' this time, however.  Obama has been trying to woo these progressives to vote 'yes' this time around, saying this is a simple foundation.  And without this, we'll never get single-payer--a first step, as it were.

Still, while it is a 'yes' vote gone, it also lowered the total vote goal back down to 216--before Nathan Deal said he wasn't resigning immediately.

111 Huh?

Massa voted no last time, correct?

Only if Massa were a definite "no" this time would his loss help Pelosi.

Assuming Massa was going to vote "yes" this time (and that seems likely), there is no way that losing his vote HELPS Pelosi.

At best, its neutral since Pelosi now needs one less "yes" vote to carry the bill.

In other words, out of the remaining pool of individuals she needs to either remain a "yes" for the Senate bill, or flip to a "yes" from a "no", the number she needs is the same.

With Massa's "yes" she'd need 217 votes (including his).
Without it, she needs 216 votes.

Unless I'm missing something here, its a wash.

She still has to convince the same number of OTHER House members to vote "yes" as she would have without him.
