Harlem Rep. Charlie Rangel did break the rules and was convicted this morning of 11 of the 13 ethics violations leveled against him by a House panel.A sanctions hearing, at a time yet to be determined, will decide what punishment he faces.
Possible punishments include a House vote deploring RangelÂ’s conduct, a fine and denial of privileges.
Rangel was not present when the committee rendered its decision.
Not sure how much they can do to him in the end. He's not going to be Chairman of Ways and Means because the Republicans are going to take over. They could prevent him from being the Ranking Member but that's not that big of a punishment. I doubt they'd kick him out and even if they did, he's already been elected to the next Congress. I really doubt the first act of the new GOP majority is going to be refusing to seat an 80 year old black guy.
I'm sure they'll think of something.

Instead of ethics, Congress cares most about ethnics. Even the new "conservatives" aren't about to court charges of racism by failing to reach across the aisle to give poor old Charlie -- who would be on his way to a jail cell in the real world -- a hearty fraternal handclasp.

That would take a 2/3 majority which Republicans don't have. Dems never hold a Dem to accountability. Just look at Rangle's predesessor. Adam Clayton Powell he did the same thing as Rangle and he was convicted of actual crimes. They didn't call it "ethics" and they booted him out.

Republicans have to make rangle a synonym for corruption by pointing out, incessantly, how many Republicans involved in even allegations of scandalous behavior, have ben forced to resign. It is time the Republicans took off the gloves and declared:

Now it is 'over' with and if the Repubs try to reopen the case when they take over the whining will be 'Repubs just want to relitigate the past. We have serious problems we must deal with.' And if that doesn't end it, of course "Racist!" is the next tactic. Not sure if that one has much life left in it though, the 'ol race card is pretty much maxed out these days.

1. That Rep. Rangel's district has had two (as in 1-2, dos, a deuce, twosies) and only two Congressmen since 1945?
2. That Rep. Rangel's predecessor had ethics troubles, and Rep. Rangel primaried him in 1970 (and has been in Congress ever since)?
3. That Rep. Rangel's predecessor gay-baited the Rev. Martin Luther King successfully?
4. That those who fail to remember history are doomed to repeat it?

This is why, when the improprieties first came to light, the Republicans should have pushed and pushed to take care of this matter promptly. The current outcome is what happens when Republicans, as they do more often than not, let the opposition have their way.
