BREAKING: North Korea and South Korea Trading Fire [rdbrewer]

North Korea fired on Yeonpyeong Island in the Yellow Sea, west of the peninsula. South Korea returned fire.

Two injured and several houses burned down:

South Korea's YTN television said two people were injured, several houses were on fire and that shells were still falling on Yeonpyeong island. Yonhap news agency, quoting a military official, said four soldiers were wounded. The reports couldn't be immediately verified.

YTN said between 1,200 and 1,300 people live in the island, citing an island resident. TV pictures showed black and white smoke rising from the island.

A South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff official said dozens of rounds of artillery landed on the island and in the sea. The official says South Korea fired back. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of JCS rules, said South Korea's military is on alert. He had no other details.

According to the Breaking News Twitter feed, South Korea is on its highest non-wartime alert and has scrambled F-16 jets.

11 Eric N.Korea was never a problem, the historically, the problem was Russia - which gave N.Korea the tanks it used in the initial attacks and China, which sent god knows how many to die defending a fellow communist state. I have no idea what China would do if the Korean peninsula got hot again, but given that they've been flexing their economic muscles recently in Asia I certainly don't have a good feeling about it.

There hasn't been a single military battle on their land since then, and they were worse than the Russians when the Nazis invaded, just giving up land and people for time. I suppose the question is whether it is better to have the fight now or wait until they do it on their terms after having further closed the technology gap.  All the signs point to China going "military expansionist" in the very near future unless its leaders (read: dictatorial oligarchy) misjudge their timing and the country implodes first.  Somehow, I don't have much faith in pleasant happenstance being forthcoming.

33 Drew, South Korea is no Georgia, there are 28000 U S troops in USFK, right now, not to mention the naval forces, and air forces within 2 hours flight from Japan, 4 hours from Guam, and even less from ICBMs in the states and subs in the area. South Korea will be defended in multitudes of magnitude to a greater extent than Georgia ever was. Think of South Korea as Texas, and as the saying goes, "Don't mess with Texas".

Every inch of the border is lined with 50 foot tall razor wire fences, ditches, land mines, spot lights, and manned guard towers with orders to shoot to kill anyone in the 300 foot "neutral zone". The "fence" on the South is not unlike the 5 foot guard rail at the US/Mexico border.

Well, I wonder how many civies the Norks will be allowed to murder this time, without any meaningful retaliation.  It's bad enough to allow the destruction of a naval vessel to go unanswered, but to allow the random killing of your citizens is unthinkable.  If Mexico shelled a Texas border town I am pretty sure we'd do more than complain to the UN.  I believe the words "disproportionate response" would be involved.  Or at least they would be if a real man was running the executive branch instead of the jug-eared fop.

Ben, how'd you do that?

 

The blog puts the posts in chronological order. So if you go to the "edit entry" page and scroll down to where it says "authored on", you'll see it is in military 24 hour time. Just change the time it was authored. For example, you wrote it at like 01:43:00, so I went and changed the time to 08:40:20 and saved it.  The blog then thinks that this post was written after my morning post and therefore puts it above it.

I am not a big fan of speading nukes around, but it may be  time for the Japs or Sorks to consider either buying an off the shelf nuke from russia or us, or making one of their own.

These kind of provocations MUST have a strong response, otherwise they will continue to escalate. Maybe we should wait until they actually fire a nuke into Seoul or one of the bases with out troops. At which point, a lot of people will lament 'why didn't we do something earlier'.

If there is a fight, we want it to be when WE choose it. I'd have thought we learned that lesson in Europe and the Pacific during WWII, but apparently it has yet to sink in.

If all we are going to do is send angry language, then we might as well pull out of ROK entirely; I don't want to risk our troops and resources if we're too chickenshit to use them.

"In the same way" doesn't discount China siding with N.Korea as it will, though how they will ally this time isn't known.

Given N.Korea's miserable circumstances with starving masses and nothing but potential free labor for aggressive Chinese industry, we'll see what China determines they have to gain by crashing the US were the US to oblige S.Korea in a North Asian War (that Gates has successfully curtailed our ability to fight beyond 2 fronts at a time).

I doubt that Obama has either the desire or the guts to declare war on anyone. As is, he "inherited" our current military operations.

Obama will leave S.Korea to the UN to protect or not protect, whether or not he provides the UN with US forces.

It's only my opinion, but Truman could have stomped the Norks using the vast array of materiel left over from WWII.

We still had a shitload of B-29s and munitions then. A good carpet-bombing of the North would have shut down the Earlier Kim, and there would have been no need to follow Dugout Doug's scheme to carry the war into Red China.

They got plenty of our hardware including 1500 K1 and K1A1 (versions of the Abrams) and about 100 MLRS batteries in addition to about 5000 more artillery. They got 600 combat aircraft (F-15s, F-16s, F-5s and F-4s). 80 percent of their logistics is home-grown. Their total reserves amount to 5 million military and paramilitary troops.

Yes, he absolutely should never have conducted the Korean War as he chose to do, against the advice of his military commanders, dismissing MacArthur for subtly/publicly pointing out the obvious, what Truman's plan would mean in the end.

Bombing the nuclear no man's land swath keeping the North in the North would have saved America a lot of misery, death, and grief from that UN engagement sponsored by the US, fighting tooth and nail hand to hand combat with the Chinese for a hill simply to relinquish it time and again ordered by UN directive.

Truman didn't believe his own propaganda after Nagasaki or he'd have re-applied nuclear bombs to prevent massive American deaths that he preferred in Korea.

RE: bombing to prevent augmented warfare, had the US Air Force bombed all the North Vietnam dikes, that war would have ended before it began.

From dominoes to nation building, not much difference given pompous political aspirations for personal profits via never ending military engagements.

Yes, I do remember those protests.  I remember how they treated the US troops with complete contempt.  I remember how the South Korean government and the vast majority of South Koreans looked on with approval.
So forgive me if I don't give a shit about this.
The only people that I am concerned are the troops stationed there and their dependents.  I always thought it was a stupid idea to allow dependents to be stationed in what is effectively a war zone.  I hope somebody is dusting off the evacuation plans.
I think the world needs a good hard dose of what a emasculated America really means.

#294, the protests outside Yongsan Garrison in Seoul are the summer tradition for Korean college kids. There are 37 colleges and universities in the Seoul metro area. Most Korean college kids live at home, and have excess energy they can't put into drinking and fucking. Their only outlets are video games and political protests. Their lefty professors (some of whom are subsidized by North Korean front groups) agitate for those protests every year.

Meanwhile the Korean National Police riot teams, who are redneck kids from outside Seoul who didn't get to go to college, beat the shit out of the college kids. Both sides do this for a few years, then get on with their lives.

I did a tour on Yongsan with Honor Guard Company in '99-00, and the college kids were a minor annoyance. I always got along well with all the other locals. I used to go to Kangnam, Inchon, Nandemun, and other parts of the city just to stay away from Itaewon.

I told one of the ROK Army colonels that flying the college kids somewhere like Thailand or the Philippines to drink and fuck would be a better release of tension than beating each other half to death and the occasional Molotov cocktail accident, but he shrugged it off as the way things were.

Wait.  It gets worse.
The Genius in Cheif has been pushing very hard for a "no first use" policy with respect to nuclear weapons.
One should always keep in mind the fact that the North Koreans have a formidable stockpile of chemical weapons and that the US doesn't.
The US has not officially adopted the "no first use" policy with respect to countries like North Korea and Iran but everybody knows that The One will never authorize the use of nuclear weapons in response to chemical weapons being used against US forces.

Everybody assumes that the US would totally dominate the North Koreans in a military encounter, but that really isn't a given if you throw their chemical weapons into the equation.
