Two mandatory life sentences....plus some threats from the guilty.
The 30-year-old naturalized American, who was born in Pakistan and lived in Connecticut, pleaded guilty to ten different terror-related federal charges, two of which carry a mandatory life sentence. After Shahzad pleaded guilty to the first charge, attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction, Judge Miriam Cedarbaum said, "I gather you want to plead guilty to all [the charges.]
"Yes," said Shahzad, and then said he wanted to plead guilty and 100 times more," because he wanted the U.S. to know it will continue to suffer attacks if it does not leave Iraq and Afghanistan and stop drone strikes in Pakistan.
That doesn't sound like somebody who has been beaten down. That sounds like defiance.
Okay, now I'm really leaving...

Unclear on the concept. At proceedings like this, you don't want to make big political statements. And if you're going to say anything other than "Guilty" or "Not guilty," you want to say something that expresses contrition -- whether real or feigned.
I guess it's a good thing that these guys are so very vocally proud of their vocation for jihad. It makes it easier to get them to reveal important information.

On that one day in April, according to records obtained by ABC 15, Homeland Security officials were holding inmates from Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Egypt, Lebanon, and the Sudan.
“They’re coming from all over,” Arizona Senator Jon Kyl said. “And one wonders whether some of them are coming in here to commit acts of terror.”
Kyl has been tracking the problem since 2002, not long after the September 11 attacks. Since that time, according to an investigation by the House Committee on Homeland Security, intelligence officials have determined members of the terror group Hezbollah have already infiltrated the U.S. by crossing at the southern border.
ICE officials told congressional investigators, undocumented immigrants were smuggled from the Middle East to staging areas in Central and South America, before being smuggled into the U.S.
The report says officials are also concerned about Venezuela emerging as a terrorist “hub,” with the government there issuing travel documents that can be used to obtain a U.S. visa.
Border patrol agents have also recovered military-style patches on clothing near the border. One patch contains the word “martyr” in Arabic. Another depicts a plane appearing to fly into sky scrapers.

A car bomb is technically a weapon of mass destruction because it's designed to kill multiple people. It's the same reasoning that leads to snipers and school shooters being called mass murderers, even if their body count is very small compared to a CBN attack.

It has long been the U.S. policy to consider WMDs as being either Nuclear, Biological or Chemical in nature. It's my understanding that this was just a basic explosive device with none of the above listed components.
So, is there something we weren't told about the make up of the device, or is this "WMD" claim just puffery in favor of the retards in charge??

At least, according to U.S. law:
18 U.S.C. 2332a (2) the term "weapon of mass destruction" means— (A) any destructive device as defined in section 921 of this title; (B) any weapon that is designed or intended to cause death or serious bodily injury through the release, dissemination, or impact of toxic or poisonous chemicals, or their precursors; (C) any weapon involving a biological agent, toxin, or vector (as those terms are defined in section 178 of this title); or (D) any weapon that is designed to release radiation or radioactivity at a level dangerous to human life;
18 U.S.C. 921 (4) The term "destructive device" means— (A) any explosive, incendiary, or poison gas— (i) bomb, (ii) grenade, (iii) rocket having a propellant charge of more than four ounces, (iv) missile having an explosive or incendiary charge of more than one-quarter ounce, (v) mine, or (vi) device similar to any of the devices described in the preceding clauses; (B) any type of weapon (other than a shotgun or a shotgun shell which the Attorney General finds is generally recognized as particularly suitable for sporting purposes) by whatever name known which will, or which may be readily converted to, expel a projectile by the action of an explosive or other propellant, and which has any barrel with a bore of more than one-half inch in diameter; and (C) any combination of parts either designed or intended for use in converting any device into any destructive device described in subparagraph (A) or (B) and from which a destructive device may be readily assembled.
The term "destructive device" shall not include any device which is neither designed nor redesigned for use as a weapon; any device, although originally designed for use as a weapon, which is redesigned for use as a signaling, pyrotechnic, line throwing, safety, or similar device; surplus ordnance sold, loaned, or given by the Secretary of the Army pursuant to the provisions of section 4684 (2), 4685, or 4686 of title 10; or any other device which the Attorney General finds is not likely to be used as a weapon, is an antique, or is a rifle which the owner intends to use solely for sporting, recreational or cultural purposes.
This is a very broad definition, and one that involves the intention of the weapon's creator as well as the details of the weapon itself.

Posted by: stuiec at June 21, 2010 06:57 PM (7AOgy)
Of course. I was pointing out that that was the first angle of attack the administration took, and that was a very un-AMerican, odd thing for the Executive branch to do. Now, they act as if they just "set up a relief fund", as if their call for BP to stop paying dividends was totally outside of any position the Executive branch should ever even be considering. The $20 billion shakedown was just the continuation of that, but the threat against the dividends (that BP certainly succumbed to) is the clear smoking gun in this whole pathetic affair. Yet, none of the conservatives have bothered talking about it since the "shakedown" comment caused a spastic reaction by the squishes.

Stu, go back and re-read what you posted - it says that WMD has one definition and "destructive device" has another. The statute says that a WMD has to have a NBC component. A "destructive device" w/o a NBC component does not a WMD make.
Posted by: FORGER - Racist Czar at June 21, 2010 07:06 PM (J7Hjj)
Sorry, but no. The very section you quoted clearly states that any destructive device defined in section 921 is, for purposes of the US Code, a "weapon of mass destruction." To be WMD under the US Code, a weapon has to meet at least one of the four criteria: "destructive device" per Sec. 921, chemical, biological OR nuclear. Any one of the four will do.
18 U.S.C. 2332a (2) the term "weapon of mass destruction" means— (A) any destructive device as defined in section 921 of this title; (B) any weapon that is designed or intended to cause death or serious bodily injury through the release, dissemination, or impact of toxic or poisonous chemicals, or their precursors; (C) any weapon involving a biological agent, toxin, or vector (as those terms are defined in section 178 of this title); or (D) any weapon that is designed to release radiation or radioactivity at a level dangerous to human life;

Oh, and let's recall how some prisoners in the UK are converting to Islam for the "perks":
Some prisoners believe they will receive "material benefits" such as more time out of their cell and better food during Ramadan if they become Muslim, the report by the Chief Inspector of Prisons said.
Among the reasons given by inmates for switching to Islam was the opportunity of "support and protection in a group with a powerful identity" and "perceptions of material advantages of identifying as Muslim".
Some criminals – known as "convenience Muslims" – adopt the religion in order to get benefits available only to Muslims according to Dame Anne Owers.
Her report, entitled Muslim Prisoners' Experiences, also suggests Muslim prisoners are being driven to extremism because they are all treated as potential radicals while in jail.
The treatment of Muslim inmates by the Prison Service risks a "self-fulfilling prophecy" of leaving them alienated and disaffected, Dame Owers warned.
She said the "blanket security-led" approach, which focuses only on tackling Muslim extremism and not individual or faith needs, means the prisoners are more likely to reoffend or embrace extremism once back in the community.
However, prison staff fear some prisoners are being forced to convert to Islam by radical inmates while other Muslims are being pressured to adopt a more extreme version of the faith, the report revealed.

Here's a guy who's at least honest about it.
Va. Inmate: 'Only Way to Stop Me' Is Death Row
Prisoner who killed cellmate says 'the only way to stop me is death row,' vows not to appeal
For seven days, Robert Gleason Jr. begged correctional officers and counselors at Wallens Ridge State Prison to move his new cellmate. The constant singing, screaming and obnoxious behavior were too much, and Gleason knew he was ready to snap.
On the eighth day — May 8, 2009 — correctional officers found 63-year-old Harvey Gray Watson Jr. bound, gagged, beaten and strangled. His death went unnoticed for 15 hours because correctional officers had not followed proper procedure for inmate head counts at the high-security prison in southwestern Virginia.
Now, Gleason says he'll kill again if he isn't put to death for killing Watson, who had a history of mental illness. And he says his next victim won't be an inmate.
"I murdered that man cold-bloodedly. I planned it, and I'm gonna do it again," the 40-year-old Gleason told The Associated Press. "Someone needs to stop it. The only way to stop me is put me on death row."
Gleason already is serving a life sentence for killing another man. He fired his lawyers last month — they were trying to work out a deal to keep him from getting the death penalty — so he could plead guilty to capital murder. He's vowed not to appeal his sentence if the judge sentences him to death Aug. 31.

I also like this story, speaking of inmates seeking a more varied diet.
French prisoner 'killed cellmate and ate his lung'
A French prisoner killed his cellmate then sliced open his chest to remove and eat his heart, a court has heard.
However, the man removed the wrong organ, and ate his lung by mistake.
Nicolas Cocaign, 39, appeared in court in the northern city of Rouen for allegedly killing Thierry Baudry in January 2007 by punching and kicking him, stabbing him with a pair of scissors and suffocating him with a rubbish bag.
Mr Cocaign then allegedly sliced open Baudry's chest with a razor blade, removed a rib and pulled out an organ which he believed was the man's heart, but which in fact was a lung.
He is accused of eating part of the lung raw and then frying the rest of it with some onions on a makeshift cooker in the cell in the Rouen prison.
"I wanted to take his soul," Mr Cocaign, who at the time of the crime was in custody awaiting trial for attempted armed robbery, allegedly told an investigating judge probing the case.
A verdict in the trial is expected on Thursday.

For some reason, aside from the tons of uranium ore, chemical artillery shells also didn't satisfy the MSM when it came to WMD. But that's because they kept changing the rules. From a MSNBC item about a find of 36 chemical mortar shells in 2004:

This guy wants to plead guilty to 101 counts of the use of a weapon of mass destruction. He did his incompetent best to kill off a bunch of Americans. If there were any justice we would execute this guy by some painful means - perhaps a slow hanging where he is allowed to suffocate rather than have his neck snap - and that means would allow us to revive him after his heart stopped. Then we could do it over and over again until he had been "executed" once for every count. That would be most excellent.
It shoud all be filmed and put on youtube so the rest of his kind could watch in horror. On the final execution he should be forced to drink pig's blood, and then be shot and tossed into a hole filled with pig entrails.

Can't have wine in a French prison. Might offend the Muslim inmates.
Come to think of it, you can't have wine on some Parisian streets:
PARIS (Reuters) - A giant "sausage and wine" party planned later this week in a Paris neighbourhood with many Muslim residents risks sparking disturbances and will therefore be banned, police in the French capital announced on Tuesday.
The event, announced on the social networking site Facebook late last month, had drawn growing criticism from politicians and civic groups in recent days as its page containing barely disguised anti-Muslim slogans attracted over 7,000 members.
The event, called an "apero geant" (giant cocktail party), was due on Friday, a date seen as highly provocative because that will be the day of the weekly Muslim prayer and the World Cup soccer match between England and majority Muslim Algeria.
It is also the 70th anniversary of General Charles de Gaulle's famous 1940 "Appeal of June 18" from London calling on the French to resist the German occupation of their country.
"This open-air event creates serious risks of disturbances to public order," the police said in a statement, noting the symbolism of the time and place chosen for the flash mob-style party. It also said counter-demonstrations were planned.
The main organiser, Sylvie Francois, wrote that she wanted the event to be "a joyous protest" against the closing down of roads in the Goutte d'Or neighbourhood every Friday by Muslims praying in the street outside the overcrowded mosque there.
MAYOR CRITICAL
The Facebook page also appeared to signal the party's thrust with appeals to "native Parisians" and complaints about "the resolute foes of our local wines and pork products."
In a statement before the ban was announced, Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe said the party was "clearly inspired by extreme right-wing movements" and seemed to be "designed to degenerate, possibly into violence."
Fadela Amara, secretary of state for urban policy and a practicing Muslim, denounced the planned event as a bid by the extreme right to spread hatred.
"I'm all for people getting together, having a drink and a good time, but when it's organised like that ... it's very dangerous," she told RTL radio.
After the ban was announced, supporters of the event wrote on the Facebook page that they would still gather on Friday in Goutte d'Or, a poor mixed-ethnic area of northeastern Paris.
"It's official -- Muslims can pray in the street but we don't have the right to eat pork there. France is now ruled by sharia," one supporter named Antoine wrote.
The "apero geant" plan, a takeoff on flash mob drinking parties that have become popular in France, recalls earlier events such as winter soup kitchens serving only dishes containing pork so neither Muslims nor Jews would eat them.
The Paris event page also carried announcements of similar "sausage and wine" parties in Lyon, Toulouse, Brussels and London, where the event is called a "bacon and beer" party.
Sylvie Francois, a local resident, told French radio that she set up a Facebook page for the event to fight against what she saw as the increasing "Islamisation" of her area.
The project has been publicised on internet social networking sites by a small far-Right group that calls itself the Bloc Identitaire.
Paris police said they will meet with the event's organisers on Tuesday to consider their official request for permission to hold the event.

This is, of course, disgusting on several levels. The key lesson here regarding the satanic religion of Islam is that it is not only hate filled and perverted, but also absolutely bent on destroying all natural, innocent pleasures in this life. The most stolid Puritan was never such a kill-joy as the muslims. The imams attack every harmless diversion and source of joy. Muslims take pleasure from only 2 things - hurting other people, and vile sexual depravity characterized by the ruthless "taking" of carnal, loveless pleasure from a weaker being.
America will not be safe until a vigorous pogrom has been carried out.

Hark, a movie idea:
The Most Interesting Man In the World: The Movie
Now this would practically write itself. You could have a plot gimmick to jump to different times in his life, young man, middle-aged, etc. It could be anything. The overarching plot could reference it though reminising or they could do that "here's the end, now here's what lead up to it" type thing. Or, it could be more of a dramatic biopic. The stupid thing would be to treat it too lightly; he's too good of a character. Treat it seriously. Make him James Bond like, for example.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. health insurers are raising prices by an average of 20 percent for adults age 64 and younger who buy their own policies, according to a survey released by a nonprofit healthcare group on Monday.
Such premium cost increases affected more than three-quarters of the 14 million adults who buy their own health plans and caused some to either seek a cheaper option with fewer benefits or switch insurers altogether, the Kaiser Family Foundation study showed.
The findings come as the Obama administration works with insurers to implement some of the new rules under the recently passed healthcare law, which aims to expand consumers' coverage while cracking down on discriminatory industry practices.
Although individual, or "nongroup," policies are a small slice of the health insurance industry, they have attracted sharp scrutiny in recent months amid reports of price increases as high as 39 percent.
snip~
While most working-age adults who have insurance get it through their employers, roughly 14 million people in the United States -- mostly small business owners or those whose companies don't offer insurance -- buy their own policies.

That's one reason it needs to be treated seriously. Otherwise, it's a one joke movie, like hirsute cavemen. So--I've seen this before--there needs to be more backstory on who the guy is. He needs to be 3d. Remember the character Snake Pliskin? I know Mike McQuay, the guy who wrote the books. He had to invent an entire backstory to make the character book-length interesting.

If our laws and our institutions determine that BP ought to pay $20 billion — or $50 billion or $100 billion — then so be it.

Technically, it has not been confiscated by Barack Obama, but that is a distinction without a difference

A good example of a one-joke movie transcending its one joke is Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. We have to take Austin Powers as a given -- the Mod version of James Bond -- but then we learn enough about him and see him change enough that we accept him as a full-fledged character.
A sort of poor example (IMHO) was Buckaroo Banzai. We were supposed to accept him but weren't given enough backstory or depth.

The letter that was sent to Pres. Obama earlier today asks the President for clarification on the use of deferred action or parole for illegal aliens. The executive actions are typically used in special cases and are evaluated on a case-by-case basis, but if 60 votes can't be secured in the Senate to pass a mass Amnesty, the Administration may use the discretionary actions as an alternative.

212 #210 What scares me is that he really believes that. My understanding is that Obama got them to pay more than just $20 billion. I have no problem with them paying the money, but after the investigation & when given the right to due process.

The sequence in the movie Hannibal should be used as a warning. "You say it is your custom to blow up innocent people in the name of your religion. Very well. We too have a custom, where we take those who plot against us and feed them alive to hogs. You may follow your custom, and then we will follow ours. And we shall see whose custom changes first."
Of course, no Western government has the sheer will to do something like that. Israel, for example, treats the remains of terrorists with great respect, whereas its enemies can hardly be relied on to keep Israeli prisoners of war alive.

I think it's a good thing that BP was paying claims without having the claiments resort to suing. I also don't have a problem with them working with a 3rd party to make that happen faster. I do have a problem with closed door meetings between the President, Attorney General and a private corp.
A third party panel should have been picked before hand and they should have met with BP.

Excellent paraphrasing of one of history's greatest quotes.
From the days when the English still had balls and brains.
I agree that current governments are of no use in the great struggle against evil. It is the result of a misguided, false morality. It is not the role of the state to forgive enemies and turn the other cheek. The job of government is to bear the sword and meet out death and justice. Ours does a poor job of terrifying our enemies. Rather it practically encourages them. If ever we have to hit the reset button it is my sincere hope that men of strength will come to power, and will deal out horror and misery to our foes (both political and cultural) that will reverberate in their collective memories for centuries.

I saw that the MMS was renamed today, as if that is going to make any difference. They knew so much about what was happening, from February onward, & they did nothing. (What should have happened would be shutting-down the entire well.) A congressman raised this at the hearing the other day, but Stupak brushed it off, saying "oh, we'll deal with it later". I don't think some of them really care, because it reflects poorly on them.

You're right, in Buckaroo Banzi there was no device to pull the audience through his interests. He just jumped from one thing to another based on his personal coolness--which worked to some extent. But there wasn't a reason for him to be that way. And there didnt' need to be, really. He was kind of a comical character.

Part of me says he may think it was extortion. As for the rest, he was instructed to play dumb. Anything he could have said to negatively affect the company could have led to further lawsuits & affected BP's shareholders. He knows that BP America & the people in Houston "screwed the pooch" on this one, but all hell would have broken lose if he had admitted that. Ultimately, none of those decisions were his, so he could have run his mouth, but he "took one for the team".

Not even close. Especially in the upper-case "L" sense of the word we somehow allowed those vile totalitarians to co-opt. The Lord said, if a man will not work, he shall not eat. And he came to die for our sins, rather than tell us that all our sins were just acceptable alternate lifestyle choices.

Jesus didn't even dislike money. He said to render unto caesar what was caesar's.
The judea at the time was occupied territory, a Roman province. The Romans were pagans and taxed the jews. The jews resented this and held jews who helped the romans collect taxes in particular contempt because they felt like they were betraying their people. The Old Testament foretold that Jesus would be born poor. Notice however that his parents were not destitute and he was born in Bethlehem because Joseph had to go there to pay taxes. The maji were wealthy and were not derided in the story. He was an everyman--the devine taking on human nature in order to pay the debt that man owed to God. Jesus and the apostles had some money--Judas was in charge of it and he was irritable about spending it --there is dialogue about that near the sermon of the mount. What Jesus wanted them to do is to not put money before God. And what he means by that is to not put money before the things that God asks you to do: take care of your children and parents, be kind to those who are hungry and thirsty (not those who won't work) but widows, the sick, children, the lame,--be faithful to your wife/husband, and stay in touch with God to remember to not be an ass. He doesn't hate money or capitalism, he just wanted people's ethics to override the quick buck, the theft, the fraud, heartlessness, murder, et al.
