British Lawmaker Stabbed By "Asian" Woman

He's alive. Some reports say he was merely "attacked," which suggests a less dangerous attack than a stabbing.

And some reports don't mention anything about the perp.

I'm posting this not because it's so terribly important but because I guessed that if I searched further some report would let slip out the news everyone else is concealing, that is, to which demographic group this attacker belongs to.

This report says she's "Asian," which in England usually means "Pakistani." (It could also mean Far East/Pacific Rim Asian, as we in America use it, but it does frequently mean Pakistani. And that's not some sort of euphemism -- it's just that in Britain they've noticed Pakistan is in fact part of the Asian continent, and so use that descriptor.)

Friday, former UK Treasury Minister and sitting Labour MP Stephen Timms was stabbed by a woman while attending his first advice session with his constituents since the 6th May general election, said officials.

The incident happened at the Beckton Globe Library in east London when the former Treasury minister was holding a constituency surgery. Police officials said a 21-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the attack on the lawmaker, but the motive behind the attack is not yet clear.

This usually means the motive is fairly clear but they're looking for alternate possibilities.

Well, if this was an American case I'd agree with you - but the cops in Britain are usually extremely reserved with their comments to the press right? I think if they say anything at all their case will collapse, or something like that.

But yes, usually when the reporter is vague both about motive, about who the perp is or where they come from, it's usually some kind of man-made disaster in progress.

5 In common parlance (ie. British MSM) I've seen "asian" used to refer to Moroccans, Afghans, etc.

Usually it means "kind of East of a certain line like-ish around Pakistan" to include India, but I think they tend to over-generalize.

I refer to Indians as Indians and Chinese as Chinese, but then I'm a stickler.

132 that's not some sort of euphemism -- it's just that in Britain they've noticed Pakistan is in fact part of the Asian continent, and so use that descriptor.

The british press always use "asian" to mean "Muslim." Its like using "insurgent" or "militant" to mean "murderous radical Muslim terrorist," or "youths" to mean "car burning radical French Muslims."

133 I know I'm terribly late to this conversation but never mind. Here in the UK, "asian" is used to refer to anyone from India, Pakistan, Bangladsh and the south-east asian countries surrounding the Indian Ocean. It's an artefact of our colonial past - most of our experience with "asia" was the Indian subcontinent. The orient was points east, largely China and the west pacific coasts. You Americans refer to east asians as just plain old asians because your primary experience with asia has been from the far east, whereas ours was from further west. So, when you see the British and European press refer to "asian", assume at first a they're referring to the Indian subcontinent. Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, that sort of area. OPf course then there's the media definition of "asian", which tends to mean muslim. Except when it doesn't. Recently there was a fairly vocal protest from several other Asian subgroups demanding that the media stop lumping them in with pakistani muslims, who most often appear in the news as "asians" and who are giving the rest a bad name. They don't want to be associated with muzzies any more than the natives. Of course the media ignored them. They like creating racial tension so they can report about it. We aren't using the word for the same thing that you use it for, so it's not particularly smart to act like we're grouping the chinese and japanese with pakistanis. We aren't.
