But let's not get TOO depressed, either. Because hey, Charles Djou is going to win in Hawaii, and he's probably going to hold on in November too. That's waaaay cooler than failing to win over a bunch of pork-addicted ex-steelworkers in Western Pennsylvania.

This isn't a surprise. Personally I would have been shocked if Burns won. Unfortunately the Dem machine is pretty powerful in that district and hands out favors to anyone in exchange for votes. And yeah, the people are either Liberal loons or idiots who believe the pie in the sky crap promises the Dems throw at them.
Aa for the Specter/Sestak race, that was a tough call. I hate Specter but he would have been easier to beat in November. Of course now all the big shots in the Dem party have to backtrack their support for Arlen over Joe, so that should be fun to watch.
The other one to watch is the GOP winner in Dahlkemper's district. This could be a pick-up in November with the right candidate. Dahlkemper is only popular in her hometown of Erie.

Yes, the registration figures are absolutely true, although there is a pretty deep streak of social conservatism... which is modulated by the union-and-new-deal economic attitudes there. (Not just steelworkers. Coal miners, too. You'd think they'd realize that the coal and steel industries were decimated by union costs, but the media and educations systems back home suck too.)

there is no momentum for the GOP. burns got annihilated and this race was regarded as a toss-up, with many predicting a victory.
the GOP will gain 4 Senate seats and probably 35-40 house seats.
Again, there were no major statewide republican races. The Democratic turnout was higher because of the competative governor race and because of the sestak Specter election.
about 800 thousand voted in the dem senate primary and 500 in the republican. In november there will be a bigger republican turn out.

Actually it's a great opportunity. If you have the right people analyzing every move and figuring out where you failed to reach the voters you can correct those errors. I mean, the loser is always motivated to be the winner. The winner always has in the back of their mind that they will of course win again so they don't try as hard the second time around.

Even National Review Online is calling this a "disaster" for the GOP and a bad omen for November
oh god, not the national review. I mean there is no way that the Rich Lowery types have a vested interest in keeping the republican party out of the hands of the lumpen proles and safely in the hands of the establishment.
I fail to see how this is a big loss.
Specter, the Dem endorsed candidate lost. Sestak is a closeted lefty who will be outed. He is too pro choice to cut it in Catholic PA. The Hawaii election isn't in. Blanche Lincoln will probably win, which will give the Republicans an easy target. Richard Blumenthal gave a speech today at which one of the "Vietnam Vets" he hugged and stood behind him is apparently a Stolen Valor type as well who is a fake soldier. Here in PA , the former Club for Growth President and right winger Pat Toomey will be our candidate for Senate, and AG Tom Corbett who is suing the Obama admin concerning the Mandate in healthcare will be our candidate for governor. And the only down side is Tim Burns lost to Mark Critz, who ran as more conservative than Tim Burns.
all in all it wasn't a bad night.

On the other hand...
n general elections, the dynamic will be very different. Republican challengers and incumbents will tar their Democratic opponents with a simple characterization: "A vote for my opponent is a vote for Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi's agenda." Democrats will have no such claim to make against Republicans.
Obama's endorsements keep losing, which may be more significant than what a bunch of pork gobblers in Pennsylvania do.
Posted by: Llarry at May 18, 2010 07:29 PM (vW888)
Six months of Critz being a toady for Pelosi and Obama, demonstrating the "Conservative Dem" thing was an act, as it always is these days. Plus six months of him not magically making the district's economy turn around. Plus turnout: it's always higher in November than for a special election.

Blair County is in PA-9, Bill Shuster's district.
Blair and Cambria are WEIRD. They're practically demographically identical, but Cambria is 2-1 Democratic, and as soon as you go over the mountian into Blair, it's 2-1 Republican.
The only real difference is that Johnstown was a steel city surrounded by coal towns, where most of the Altoona area was rail-centric.

And also, without a Congressman bringing in bacon, there is almost no economy to speak of in the Johnston/Cambria county region. Zilch. They have nothing. They got addicted to the government teat when steel dwindled, and turned into a bunch of dependents. Now they vote like it. It's not a shocker, really.

Regarding Burns and other Dem districts, to win the Republicans need a wave.
But when the Republicans won't fight Kagan, won't maintain a fillibuster on the financial reform bill, and generally act like losers in the Senate, how can they win?
Rand Paul wins big in Kentucky and defeats the establishment candidate. And got to give the Dems credit, at least they put a bullet in Spector, something the establishment Republicans never had the balls to do. And Bennet loses in Utah.
We are seeing Republican leadership, but it is at the governor level in NJ and AZ. When the Republicans in Congress (particularly the Senate) wake up, we can start winning these districts.
This might be good. Maybe the Repub. Senate leadership might wake up in time to stop bad bills/appointments by fillibustering and rally folks in Nov.
One place to start is the slogan for November should be one word--REPEAL!!

It will take a while to change union-drone voting habits in Pennsylvania. Same with California and the rest of the moldy states.
We need to show these people something after we get back in power. Nothing inspires like results.

In the '90s I went to school in Pittsburgh, and I met a number of undergraduates from Murtha's district, i.e. Johnstown PA area. Some were salt of the earth, but a disturbingly high number had sociopathic tendencies. They'd smile, charm, shake your hand, but when it came time to trust them, forget it.
Maybe having their town destroyed by some rich peoples' poorly-maintained artificicial lake back in 1889 still resonates down to today with Johnstown people. And the steel industry labor vs. management dynamic in SW Pennsylvainia was still bad enought in the 1980s that masked union activists did things like invade the birthday party of a steel executive's child and throw stink bombs everywhere.
I could easily see people in the Johnstown area venerating a man who brought home the bacon from D.C., and not put much more thought into it than that.
If anyone from Johnstown is offended by this, I would just like to say to the good ones that you know who you are, and the rest of you can go piss up a rope.
Yes, I got burned a few times.

The Pittsburgh local history museum actually has a permanent exhibit that talks about the steel industry that built the city. When I was there a few years ago I actually did happen to see a plaque that mentioned the union costs making the industry decline. It was rather refreshing.

Sometimes you need to know when to hold 'em and sometimes you just need to know when to fold 'em.
Murtha called his own constituents a bunch of racists and proceeded to win easily. The district gives about a 25 percent approval rating to Congress but just installed a guy who will vote with that same very Congress about 80-90% of the time.
At a certain point, you just need to realize, it's not you, it's them.

I was in PA-12 recently, in Burgettstown in partcular.
My grandfather was a coal miner. I lived there as a first and second grader waaaaaaay back.
It was depressed even then, as the mines played out and the steel industry around Pittsburgh started to tank.
It's a lot worse now. Portions of "downtown" Burgettstown are now abandoned and boarded up. An air of decay and despair hangs over the place.
Every teenager unlucky enough to live there, lives only to get the frack out of his loser ghosttown at first opportunity. Almost everything he sees in the movies and on TV has nothing to do with him, stuck in a post-industrial wasteland.
But the old folks are completely dependent on unions and the dole, and they loved Murtha and his scraps of pork.
As they will say to you: have another Yuengling, and chill.
p.s. In thirty years Murtha's airport might become useful. If that happens some journo will approvingly quote a Dem party hack about how "foresighted" Murtha was.

I think turnout was extra light. I had problems getting information, myself. Washington got crushed, outside of the pork slobs in PA-12, but I never counted that as a win. I think that the Dems lose a ton in November, but I think it's too late, anyway. This train left the station in the 2008 election.
To me, the question becomes one of what the states are going to do. Given the fact that The Precedent and his junta have decided to try and ally with a foreign enemy, China, against Arizona says it all (for those who couldn't see what's been going on the whole time). I don't think people have quite digested what this all means, yet.
And we sit on the razor's edge, with more than a few independent, external events able to push us over - especially since this administration (no matter the makeup of Congress) will be pushing instability, without any safety net left, as our federal institutions are all plumb out of "faith and credit". I see very rough times ahead, and that's from the "glass is half-full" point of view

And once again a speech that has all the right words is not enough, we need the substance, of course, but people don't go to a steakhouse just because it has steak, they go over and over because of the sizzle. The GOP needs to learn something other than the missionary position.
McCain lost mostly IMO because he did not take any kind of a fight to the fake-ass Obama, who would have folded if someone just fought him even a little bit. And when you fight a Dem, remember your fight is with the media also, they are NEVER on your side. Best fighters I ever saw, liked to fight, they run to the fight, something about that is unnerving to an opponent, who wants to do some strutting and posturing first. Fuck that, go in with knife and gun right from the get go.

Everything you say is correct and can happen. However, let's hope that somehow it all doesn't happen. Let's hope that more people begin to pay attention. Tonight Batchelor had on two guys for Bloomberg who are dissecting the cuomo stuff with the "too big to fail financial institutions" and Batchelor literally said that there is no polite way to say it "the big banks were stealing from widows and orphans"....I didn't hear the rest as I had a little commotion here but Batchelor was warning about the PIGS over a year ago, maybe two years ago...so he is usually "spot on" as the brits would say. Those bank balance sheets don't look any different than they did over a year ago...what up with that? Let's have faith that by the grace of God the good people of this democratic republic can pull it together and fix it ...just get it done....

Otherwise, they'll elect the fresh faced hope 'n' changer all over again. We have to nationalize this election, but I can't be sad about this. I wasn't referring to the electorate but to the process. I think that the US' fate, as an intact nation, was sealed on Nov 4th, 2008. The country committed itself to a process, intentionally, that would spell the end of the nation as it has existed. We saw that being carried out in how The Precedent and the dems raped the federal government and turned it against the citizenry and the very concept of America. And, while it required the participation fo the dems, they were not the ones that did the damage - much of which is just effectively irreparable. It was the Indonesian Imbecile and his absolute contempt for our system and our nation, or to put it more Constitutionally, his utter contempt for ourselves and our Posterity.
The Precedent desired nothing more than to destroy this nation (taking himself down in a suicide run to do it) and, with the neo-pravda media an enthusiastic supporter and promoter of anything he wanted to do, I didn't see the country living through that. There were a few chances to stop it, the best being the fact that he was ineligible, but there were just too many cowards around to take that one possibility. That is what we have been witnessing over the past year and a half.
He made it almost impossible to grow out of the monetary disaster and wrecked our legislative processes and faith in our institutions, as well. There was another slight sign of light shining through, as we killed the health scare over and over and over, but the Indonesian Imbecile's contempt for our system allowed him to push the process far beyond the breaking point, and the dems joined him on the crusade. At this point, no matter who holds Congress (now a broken institution) it just wouldn't matter.
So, it comes down to the individual states and how they decide to handle this situation.
You are correct about the pathetically close election in 2004 - Bush should have won by 8 or 10%. As it was, he only won because he refused to surrender in Iraq - though he refused to fight full force, even after that, as Bush was always scared to kill civilians in war, which any examination of history tells us is always part of war, especially when fighting against a tribal enemies. But, the fact that America rejected surrender with Kerry was still a shining point of 2004. After that, though, the shamnesty came and that was the end of the GOP.
But, even so, 2008 was qualitatively different. An ineligible America-hater who had no American sensibilities, in the least, was voted in, and that was a point of inflection. A very dark inflection point. From then, it was just a matter, to me, of seeing how things split up. That's been my view of developments, adn it hasn't changed, except to be reinforced by the actions of The Precedent, the neo-pravda media and the useful dem idiots in Washington. This is why Rush wished that The Precedent would fail, I surmise, because that is why I hoped he failed. But, he didn't. He got most of his crap through and was able to move policy and foment chaos in many areas. His retardation didn't even hinder him much, because the useful idiots were so useful.
So, now we are left to try and manage the free fall in some way that will preserve somethign of the American creed. I am still optimistic about this - I am a believer in Manifest Destiny for the US, the chosen nation, as it were - but I don't look for it in elections to federal positions. I look for it in the actions of states.
That's how I see things, at least.

There never was. In large part, people hate both parties. The Dems will lose more because they hold more, but neither party is really connecting with the American people. Each simply assumes that they are because their polls tell them that people hate the other party more.
Hell, the way that the global economy is going, it really won't matter much anyway. Whoever wins in 2010/2012 just gets to preside over the collapse.

The Dems are going to run a "Granholm" campaign in 2010 and 2012.
Jenny won reelection easily in 2006, in spite of the fact that the economy was f**king horrible in Michigan.
Her entire campaign was to attack Dick Devos as an evil businessman who wanted to ship jobs to China.
In dumb-f*ck rust belt states like Michigan and Pennsylvania, this nonsense works like a charm.
The citizens of my state, Michigan, are so f**king stupid, don't be surprised if they vote Democrat again (for governor). All it takes is a few ads portraying the Republican as a lackee for big business. You don't get to be number 50 in employment by being pro-business.

Guys, this district is so gerrymandered its not funny. Every rebpublican area is cut around so that its nothing but libs. If I lived another mile one way or the other, I would be able to vote in the 12th, but since too many republicans live in my area, they cut the district line right around us.
If they have to spend any money to keep the seat, its a loss for them.
Posted by: Macho Comacho at May 19, 2010 02:37 AM (yzM6z)
Yes, I never had a lot of confidence in the R's taking that district as it is a gerrymandered for a guaranteed Dem win. How else could that supreme douche win after calling his on voters names.
The MFM media spin here in my district, which is also a gerrymandered D district, is that the Dem (Spratt) is in for a tough reelection bid this year. That is spin for "just in case".
What I find funny (in a bad way) is that in order to find out who the Republican likely candidates are I have to go to a national newspaper. NONE of the local papers, or even Statewide circulation papers, ever mention the candidates for the Republican side. They are all in the Dems pockets and they want Spratt to keep his major advantage.
And that is this district is one of those Rorschach blots that spans 14 counties and 3 major media markets. That makes it tough for new candidates to get a leg up. So the papers want to make sure they are giving "free publicity" to a Republican.

That probably isn't the results of gerrymandering, but what is called "white flight". This started occurring in the 60s with the advent of LBJ's great society. The urban areas became more and more liberal and socialist. The people who actually worked for a living and who paid the taxes got fed up with the high taxes inside the city and left for the burbs. Those people more often than not were white while the people who stayed in the city and collected welfare were more often than not black.
So you ultimately wind up with a city with a majority black population and ran by black politicians. Most of these cities are like Detroit. Cesspools of corruption and great experiments for socialist programs which always fail.
If they were not being subsidized by the national taxpayers they would have gone bankrupt long ago. But as long as the Dems control congress and the Republicans are spineless they will be subsidized until the "socialism runs out of other people's money".
That day is rapidly approaching.

I am not sure the "redistricting" cases had a lot to do with the "Detroitization" of all the urban areas. There were though a lot of other cases that helped it along. cases like the one in St. Loise where the court ordered huge tax increases and model school building to offset "racial inequities".
But I view that more as an impact of the socialization of the U.S. since the courts were appointed largely by the socialists. We still have that going on now under the guise of section V of the civil rights act which is blatantly unconstitutional and was supposed to have been only a 5 year temporary measure. Over 40 years later it has been extended for another 25 years and the courts have once again upheld it.
We have many school districts that are now effectively ran by the federal courts even though no State sponsored segregation has been around since the 60s.
It was extended because the Republicans are spineless and the Democraps were supporting one of their power blocks.

Someone explain to me of what cities/towns/history this district is composed? It's not urban is it? Why is it so 'tard?
Posted by: dagny at May 19, 2010 08:55 AM (HUIx1)
Read upthread -- there's a pretty good discussion of the district's history. In a nutshell: steel, unions, failing steel industry replaced with pork. It's a socially conservative fiscally liberal district, much like the one I live in. My Dem congressman is pro-life and pro-2nd Amendment (he couldn't get elected otherwise) but votes yes for every spending bill and tax raise. Poor, stupid people really, really like free stuff from the gubmint. Also add a large elderly population living on Soc Security and pensions.

"The Democrat leader of the Senate, Harry Reid, has scheduled a vote on Sen. Dodd's so-called financial reform bill, S. 3217, the Restoring American Financial Stability Act of 2010, for Wednesday, May 19th! The Democrats need 60 votes to pass this procedural motion known as "cloture." Nearly every page of Senator Dodd's 1400 page financial regulation bill aims to increase the scope of government. Section 1013 ((b)(2)), on page 1213, establishes guidelines for the creation of ACORN-type organizations to recruit risky loan applicants. Title 10 creates a new agency, the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection, that will "use the data on branches and [individual and personal] deposit accounts...for any purpose." Never before has the federal government actively sought to aggregate data on every single personal and business financial transaction in the U.S. This bill provides Big Business and Wall Street with the tools to regulate all consumers' purchasing behavior. Most important, this bill does nothing to address Fannie and Freddie - rather, Title 12 of this bill makes permanent the failed lending policies that caused their collapse. This month alone, Fannie and Freddie are asking for $19 billion in taxpayer bailouts!"
Tell you senator to vote no.

JohnstownÂ’s citizens mobilized to achieve a permanent solution to the flooding problem and wrote to President Franklin Roosevelt pleading for Federal aid. Starting in August 1938, continuing for the next five years, the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers gouged widened, deepened, and realigned 9.2 miles of channel in the city, and encased the river banks in concrete and reinforced steel.
FDR "saved" them. Case closed.

When does the redistricting happen? Rendell is done as of January, and it looks like we'll have a Pub gov.

Rendell's term ends this year. He can't run again for 4 years, so I imagine he'll be hoping for some kind of job. He may not care any more, he's one selfish politico. But I wonder if Obama will be interested in giving such an ardent Hillary backer any position in his admin. That all said, things look fairly good for Corbett the Repub governor candidate..

Back at Bush v. Gore, all the idiots insisted that the opinion was 4 to 5. The decision was 7 to 2, but the remedy was 4 to 5. I always asked, did you read it? The answer was always no because they didn't want to know or they couldn't read, maybe. Idiots.

I remember feeling bad for George and Laura. The left/dems made it almost impossible for them to entertain so I think they just gave up. And then, they claimed the WH would come alive with the BO's since the Bush were just not social....another instance of you're damned if you do and damned if you don't....the bushes should have just entertained the way they wanted to and ignored the left like BO ignores everyone.

I might be wrong, but my understanding of that situation leads me to suspect that you're comparing apples to oranges there, like, for example. I read or heard somewhere that, unlike his father, Rand isn't opposed to our participation in NATO, and he isn't an isolationist either, and their other ideas on foreign policies differ, also. It's only on domestic policies that their views are somewhat similar.

The insane responses of his supporters who do nothing but harm his reputation.

Right now Rand Paul doesn't appear to have all the same idiotic policy ideas that Ron Paul has.

And yet the city flooded again in 1977 and 38 people were killed. The city was built in a narrow valley, almost a gorge. The landscape was built for flooding. And people live in it voluntarily. Interestingly, I noticed that the smart ones tended to come from the surrounding hills.
I think people in Johnstown, including the geezers, are at best only dimly aware of who FDR was.

A year later, this January, the prevailing view among 50 economists surveyed by USA Today was that the Obama stimulus succeeded in saving many jobs. Unemployment would have hit 10.8 percent without the Recovery Act, according to their median estimate. The difference would translate into another 1.2 million lost jobs, USA Today said.
Even granting the jobs saved, which I don't, or the not to exceed 8% claim down the memory hole, isn't that something like 650k per job "saved"?
Great job, Barry.

This was one guy losing to another guy in one gerrymandered Dem-held district. To place too much importance on it as a Republican vs Democrat bellweather is a mistake.
Republican candidates aren't going to win every race; nor do they need to- enough to take back the House by a solid margin will be enough to put the brakes on the Obama / Pelosi failtrain.

Kathryn, I can't agree. For months now people have been predicting a Republican, or at least anti-Democratic, wave this year. That prediction, if true, should translate into Republicans' picking up open seats in socially conservative, McCain-voting districts. That it didn't happen suggests that we might get only a wavelet.
Posted by: Dan at May 19, 2010 07:27 AM (LhjwW)
The republicans should come out with a new immigration policy.
1) Seal the border.
2) All who are currently here illegally must register within 1 year.
3) All new registrants must wait 20 years before being allowed to vote.( They did break federal law by being illegal, this is their punishment)
4) They must pay taxes.
5) If they commit a felony, they will be deported.
6) Anyone who is here illegally after the close of registration will be imprisoned for at least 1 year, then deported with no chance ever of returning legally.
7) Anyone found employing illegal immigrants will face a mandatory $1 million fine per worker.

That being said, the dems GOTV had sometime to vote for with Sestak vs Spector. Critz ran as a republican (don't they all), but his record is going to be up for discussion next time around.
