— Ace As mentioned before, Cantor says the bill is effectively dead.
In a pre-summit talk, House Republican Whip Eric Cantor says Democrats are trying to create a sense of "false momentum" about their national health care bill -- a bill Cantor says is dead and losing more support every day. "We have to continue the fight to make sure [it is dead]," Cantor says, "but all signs indicate now they cannot pass this in the House."...
"It's been interesting the radio silence on the other side about the vote count at this point," Cantor says. "Clyburn is walking it back, and Hoyer is certainly being very cautious in everything he is saying. There's nothing coming from the Speaker's office. They've got real problems."
...
Cantor sees no change coming from today's summit. The Democratic belief that President Obama can revive the bill by the power of his presence is misplaced, he says. "It's the policy that people are opposed to," Cantor says. "It's not Obama. It's what his policies are. To try and have him use personality to convince the public to support a bad bill -- the time for that is over. The public has decided that this bill is a nonstarter."
He cites pro-life forces as being instrumental in defeating the bill.
The WSJ reports Obama is preparing a Plan B-- well, a Plan C. Plan B was reconciliation. Plan C is a greatly scaled back program,
costing $250 billion, which will be despised by liberals for spending too little and conservatives for spending too much.
[Obama's] leading alternate approach would provide health insurance to perhaps 15 million Americans, about half what the comprehensive bill would cover, according to two people familiar with the planning. It would do that by requiring insurance companies to allow people up to 26 years old to stay on their parents' health plans, and by modestly expanding two federal-state health programs, Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program, one person said. The cost to the federal government would be about one-fourth the price tag for the broader effort, which the White House has said would cost about $950 billion over 10 years.
Officials cautioned that no final decisions had been made but said the smaller plan's outlines are in place in case the larger plan fails.
Such a move would disappoint many Democrats, including Mr. Obama. They have worked for more than a year to pass comprehensive legislation like the plan the president unveiled Monday, which would cover the bulk of the 46 million uninsured people in the U.S., set new rules for health insurers and try to control spiraling health-care costs.
Liberal Democrats in particular would be dismayed by any ratcheting back of ambitions. But more-conservative Democrats nervous about the fall elections could be more comfortable with a scaled-back measure.
The White House is vigorously denying the story, through its toady Ezra Klein at the Washington Post. But Steny Hoyer says it's a possibility.

Remember when that cockslobber Evan Thomas of Newsweak said Obama is sorta like a god?
Well, that's what Obama is trying to pass himself off as today -- a god who stepped down from Mt Olympus to speak with the lowly mortals.

I thought it was 30 million?
As for the bill being dead, Rep Canton, I'm going to use a rule taken out of any Steven Seagal movie - It's not dead unless I see a body. For example, from that epic tome Under Siege 2: Dark Territory -
"I assumed he was dead." "Assumption is the mother of all fuck-ups!"

A scaled-back version costing "only" $250 billion- an amout that used to be a lot of money pre-Obama (pbuh)- would be the smart play politically for Obama.
Liberals would be upset, but where are they going to go? It would probably win over enough holdouts (including the usual RINO suspects) to pass, appeal to independents, give Obama a claim to (an incomplete) victory, and finally put the healthcare debate to bed. The longer this drags on, the worse it is for Dems.
Obama being Obama though, I'm not sure he's capable of making the politically smart move if it doesn't involve reading from a teleprompter.

Destroying national security.
They are passing a bill that would outlaw not only water boarding but also:
- “Exploiting the phobias of the individual”
- Stress positions and the threatened use of force to maintain stress positions
- “Depriving the individual of necessary food, water, sleep, or medical care”
- Forced nudity
- Using military working dogs (i.e., any use of them – not having them attack or menace the individual; just the mere presence of the dog if it might unnerve the detainee and, of course, “exploit his phobias”)
And much, much more.

If you have a health insurance plan that doesn't cover preventive care, that doesn't mean you can't get preventive care. . . you just pay out of pocket if you want it. You get a lower premium if you want that kind of plan.
He would argue that auto insurance needs to cover oil changes, brake pads, tire rotations. . . or else you can't get it. And when insurance does cover routine maintenance, somehow it will lower the premiums.
Most of Congress has no idea how the health care system works. Obama himself has never paid an insurance premium in his life. . . somehow he 'knows' everything about the system.

This is gonna fail like everything else the one touches...he is a complete failure. He can not lead and refuses to follow. In the end, the dims will be trying to pass a very "small" bill that is called health care reform. Just so he will have something to brag about. If the good guys will just stick together, they can defeat that too. The only thing the Reps should vote for is freedom to buy across state lines, tax cuts, spending cuts, and tort reform. the dims will put none of that in any bill.

Even if he did, I don't think he cares. Driving health insurance companies into bankruptcy and forcing them to close their doors makes a Canadian-style health care system possible.

As a single professional that has always subsidized my coworkers and their children through this insane tax/health care scheme I look forward to subsidizing them and their children for an extra eight years.
At one point, when i was in my twenties, i dropped my health insurance completely to save the $80 or so per month deduction. This saved the company about 12K a year.
I really love this country, low taxes., unsustainable debt, ponzi SSI, and we get so subsidize people that cheat, steal, and have big families. Can I have some more please?

They have said that at least 50 times this year. I will count it dead when both houses are Republican and we have a real conseravtive as President.
And then there is a good chance it will come back the next the public gets a wild hair up their ass and elects the communists to control the government.

Plan B is a disaster. It would only allow single people to stay on their parent's health insurance. A young couple that gets married would suddenly have to pay thousands for health insurance. Welfare has already destroyed marriage among low-income people. We don't need to destroy marriage for everybody else.
