Well, Paladino has about 20 days to turn this into a referendum  on gay marriage.  It could work.  Most polls show that while the population is in favour of civil partnerships recognized they are not in favour of a redefinition of marriage to include same same sex couples.  If you look at Prop 8 in California (which is arguably the most liberal state in the union) the black population voted for Obama almost to a man but also for Prop 8 by a pretty significant number.

In a Primary some group who can run a good ground game can win a Primary if their opponent doesn't put up the same ground game because he is complacent.

The Kossites went full out to kill Lieberman. The Party itself wasn't out to get him at the time and Lieberman was complacent until near the end. That is exactly how that idiot Greene won the primary in SC.  Someone put a ground game for him and I suspect that I know who that was, but it sure wasn't the Party.
