Castro Said WHAT?
— Geoff

A stunning admission, if true:

Jeffrey Goldberg, a national correspondent for The Atlantic magazine, asked if Cuba's economic system was still worth exporting to other countries, and Castro replied: "The Cuban model doesn't even work for us anymore" Goldberg wrote Wednesday in a post on his Atlantic blog.
In related news, Sean Penn is reportedly moaning softly while curled in a fetal position.

68 I follow the Cuban situation and have been there many times - I am Canadian and we can come and go all we want - and Americans have to realize that 40% of Cuban imports are with the United States right now and Americans are traveling there every day to look at business opportunities. Cuba has been changing for a number of years and just recently Cuba created a new real estate law allowing foreigners to enter into 99 year leases in order to get a number of golf course developments off the ground.
The LSM in the United States won't tell you all this because they think the average American is stupid and that much information would cause Americans heads to explode. Besides, politicians like Charlie Rangel and the Black Caucus have been down there a few times trying to line up lucrative connections for when the country really opens up so that they can make a lot of money.

Ya know, I was stationed in Gitmo when Castro opened up his prisons and "encouraged" all of those Cuban prisoners to flee to the US via rubber rafts back in 93-94.  We took in about 30-40,000 political dissidents in a couple of months.  And you know what?  They said they would rather languish in friggin tents set up on the golf course and eat MRE's for the rest of their lives than live in Cuba.  That was even with the threat that they might never see the US and might even be deported back to the mainland in Cuba at some point in the future, but they said living in a tent eating those horrid MRE's was better than living in Cuba.

Oh, and one night, a Russian barge broke loose in the channel in the bay when I was fishing and washed up near Leeward side, I tried to tie off on it with my Bass Tracker and claim it as salvage because it was in international waters.  Didn't work, security made me give it back.

112 I fail to understand why Americans can't at least give Castro some credit for being NOT STUPID. You don't have to admire or even like his politics to acknowledge that he does think about things. I confess I was rather taken aback by his comments on the Jews but I thought they were pretty much on target. If he indeed did say this latest thingy, that at least indicates a 'flexibility' that is markedly different from the image harped upon by the exiles in Florida.

I will have you know that in July 1975, not 1875, I got to eat the first of many CRats when I went to Boot camp in the US Army at Fort Knox.  I had the vintage Pork slices from the recent unpleasentness of the Korean War, the case was dated 1952.  When I informed my Drill Seargeant that what I was attempting to eat was made  5 years before I was born, he launched into a "robust" discussion on what I would eat and not eat for the next 11 weeks.

Oh and Beans and Meatballs were yummy!

Fidel killed all the political prisoners years ago and no longer fears an internal revolt. Life is good for Fidel, with the exception of the exiles in Miami who would slit his throat to avenge all their murdered and tortured relatives.

120  The Cuban Model was based on having someone else to leech from.  Cuba's Socialist Utopia's never had a prayer of being self-sustaining.

He got thirty years out of the USSR, then after stumbling for a while and cutting back his ambitions he managed to latch onto Chavez.

But the number of potential sugar-daddies is now dwindling - neither the Chinese nor the Arabs are likely to be much interested in propping him up for ideological purposes, and I can't see Putin signing up for another round.

The dude is in his 80's and not well.  I've found that older people who aren't well tend to speak very frankly and profanely about shit because nobody dares to challenge them out of deference to their age.

It has nothing to do with "flexibility" and everything to do with being at the end of his road.

Considering the body count since 1959, I'd say that Fidel would win that one by a nose.

Besides, Carter never gave 8 hour long speeches where the secret police would disappear someone if they walked out to take a bathroom break.

I had a college professor who had been a fairly high-level diplomat for a South American country for many years before he became a teacher.  He had two great Castro stories.

1. Castro shows up at an OAS meeting in the early 80s, still wearing fatigues.  All of the other leaders - even from military juntas - were wearing suits.  Finally, one of Paraguay's delegates loudly announced that they should "Pass the hat to buy Brother Fidel a suit".

2. The professor was in Cuba for some negotiation or other, and was supposed to meet Castro one night.  He goes to the meeting, and Castro greets him wearing nothing but a fez and a smoking jacket.  Unsurprisingly, the meeting was somewhat awkward.  Professor concludes the story by saying: "You know, Castro hates homosexuals. He really hates them. As in 'methinks he doth protest too much' hates them."

On the Granma voyage, it was really crowded. Fidel used to drink mojitos and lip-sync to Judy Garland records in the evenings. It really pissed off the rest of the amigos, because he'd kick them in the shins while doing the dance numbers.
