President Barack Obama's budget will lead to deficits averaging nearly $1 trillion over the next decade, the CBO estimated Friday...Oh, that funny hissing noise you're hearing? That's just the oxygen being sucked out of private sector finance markets. Pay no attention to it, it means nothing.

The next couple years is going to be remembered as a titanic battle between the forces of conservative and progressive thought. No time in our nations history have the stakes been so enormous. The threat of 1 trillion dollar deficits ten years into the future and the prospect of government's continuing intrusion into the private sector, including the idea of a take over of our health care industry is setting the table for the mother of all battles. Progressives now control our government. We have a president hell bent on a redistribution agenda, and a massive expansion of federal power.
I heard the other day a good description of the fundamental difference between conservative and progressive thought. In short, conservatives believe in freedom, and because of that they are willing to accept a disparity in economic outcome. Progressives on the other hand believe in equality, and are willing to accept a loss of freedom. Why would anyone dispute the idea of equality? Don't our founding doctrines say that all men are created equal? Yes, but equality of opportunity and equality of outcome are completely different concepts. Conservatives believe in the former, but they abhor the latter. Do progressive really not believe in freedom? Well, none would ever admit to that, but policies of wealth confiscation that takes from one and transfers to another obviously reduces freedom, and in a very subtle way condemns the recipient to an entitlement mentality that robs that person of self respect. They also seem to want to meddle in every aspect of American life, and set standards of conduct overseen by a nanny state that doesn't trust the individual to make decisions on his own.

the entire system is broke, all of it. Mish's site has been doing some really great pieces on this.
If they pass this piece of shit "healthcare" bill, the country is done, its pretty insolvent now, but within a 1 yr or 2 we will not be able to sell any bond without massive increase in interest rates, and we will have a very very very severe recession again. Jim Sinclair's website has done some great work on this. Jim used to be an advisor to Volker, when he was the fed chairman.

tom hanks,
Barry, the abandoned bastard of an illicit union between a deranged communist whore and Malcolm X, has his instructions from London to permanently destroy America and her via debt, wreck her economy, euthanize the greatest generation, and to exhaust and demoralize her military in a wild goose chase in the "graveyard of empires". He does hate America, especially White America, and does love his works of treason and destruction. It is through this that all his actions may be understood.
I hope the military fulfills their oaths and steps up and arrests this asshole or better. This son of a whore is the walking definition of a "domestic enemy" and we won't sit still anymore for his treason. The people who purportedly shouted "kill em, kill em" at the Palin rallies appear to have been prescient.
NEVER ever forget the mainstream media that conspired to foist this Muslim nation wrecking bastard on America is responsible. They intentionally sold us this traitor.
I repeat, The democrat party of stupid is thwarting entrepreneurship and the economy will not recover until the democrats are out of power.

There is a common sense reality that Ronald Reagan prescribed to. Whatever you tax you get less of, and whatever you reward you get more of. When you tax hard work the inevitable result is a loss of production and incentive. Men will work for the good of others, but usually only in a personal way. It's hard to have the fruits of your labor ripped from your fingertips and dispersed by a pointy headed bureaucrat to a faceless nameless recipient. This is not charity, it's confiscation. It's the cruelest of all rebukes. You work and strive for a better life for yourself and your family, and someone unknown to you will be rewarded for your labor. The person dependent on government services develops an entitlement mentality that breeds mediocrity and a meager existence. Both are worse off.
God, do I hate Progressives!

Liberalism adopts and abandons positions whenever it is convenient, because they really don't care about individual issues.
What they do care abut it acquiring power. So, anything that gives far left Barack power is ok. Anything that gave moderate Bush power is bad.
So the Patriot Act was bad then, and good now.
Once you apply this template, it becomes easy to understand leftist positions on issues.

Loyalty. McCain helped Brown out big-time in the Senate race and brought Palin to national prominence. I personally wish she would have stayed out, but she doesn't see things that way. She gave him pretty faint praise on Leno this week, so I don't think she's terribly enthused about it.
On a related note, if McCain wins the primary, lets find somebody better than Hayworth to run against him next time. Flake or Shadegg would be good.

>>Once you apply this template, it becomes easy to understand leftist positions on issues.
Conservatives aren't against taxes that fund legitimate services for infrastructure, defense, and to manage a civil society. But, when a government decides they're going to level the playing field and confiscate to bring what they call social justice and an egalitarian utopia, the principles that made this country great are on life support. Rewarding failure is the surest way to guarantee more failure. Bankruptcy laws were made for a purpose, and weren't intended to be usurped by a government looking for power and control. Free market capitalism cannot survive under a bailout mentality. Crony capitalism will be the result and the favored few will be the winners, and those who succeed will be punished for their success.

How do progressives convince the public of their agenda? Two very distinct ways. First they use class warfare to pit the poor and middle class against the wealthy. They lecture us that if the rich weren't so greedy there would be more for the rest of us. The rich must be made to pay their fair share. How many times have you heard that? Well let's look at the facts. The top 1% of taxpayers pay 40.42% of all income taxes. The top 5% pay 60.63%, and the top 10% pay 71.22%. More startling then these statistics is that the bottom 50% of taxpayers only pay 2.89% of all income taxes. It looks to me like the rich are paying way more than their fair share. What this heavy taxation does to the most productive members of society is shrinks wealth creation and job growth. 84% of Americans work for small businesses. Those willing to put capital at risk and grow a business that makes life better for them and their employees. When wealth is confiscated at painful levels, disposable income shrinks and businesses can't grow and therefore jobs aren't created. In this new era of progressive thought, government jobs grow as money is sucked from the private sector and into the hands of bureaucrats. Unemployment in Washington DC is 3%, while the private sector has a 9.7% (?) unemployment rate.

@ 122
I'm tempted to agree with you: we got ourselves into this mess by electing the wrong people into office, we can get out by electing the right people.
I make it a point to gently engage total strangers in political discussions and am finding much less in the way of lockstep liberal thought. Things are so bad now that even my friends who backed The Vapid One® enthusiastically are having second thoughts. It hurts them to think that they got hornswoggled, but that's a good thing.

Think I'll take a part-time college course and learn Chinese. At least I'll understand what my boss will be yelling at me after they take over. And out of curiosity, just how much does the Chinese government contribute to the Democratic Party?
Best take conversational Chinese, then, with romanized spellings. I took Chinese in college (back in the day, as a lark) and their characters are wacky. Don't waste time trying to memorize them if all you want is to understand what they're saying. That's hard enough. They've got sounds that are distinct to them and identical to western hearing. Annoying as hell.
Teacher: "No! Not Shyue! Shyue!"
Student: "Um... Shyue?"
T: "NO! Not Shyue! Shyue!"
S: "Um... Shyue?"
T: "YES! Finally! Why is that so hard for you, Round Eye?!"

t-bird,
This is a letter
To President Obama
And all of Congress
It is in Haiku
For those who donÂ’t know Haiku
Ask a school teacher
This open letter
Comes from one single voter
Who speaks for many
Proud Americans
Who believe in our country
But feel discontent
A season of change
Where hopes and dreams are fulfilled
Was promised to us
We want to see change
We voted for you to act
But you have failed us
Barack Obama
Has let America down
By failing to lead
We want our leaders
To step up and fight for change
The way they promised
Meanwhile in China
Energy Technology
Will help them beat us
They are investing
America is asleep
China will own us
Here in the Congress
We could have real health reform
But itÂ’s watered down
Even 60 votes
Is not enough to make change
When our leaders fail
Now the Dems have lost
Their precious 60 vote lead
The lead they squandered
Nothing hurts us more
Than trusting people to act
And watching them fail
Our leaders squandered
Every opportunity
To bring us real change
It shocks the senses
We see all the potential
But nothing gets done
We donÂ’t give a damn
About stupid politics
We want to see change
They voted for change
And if you wonÂ’t give us change
We will vote you out
The alternative
May indeed be worse than you
But it will be change
ItÂ’s time to wake up
And stop selling us bullshit
We are watching you
ItÂ’s too late for hope
The proof is in the pudding
Shape up or ship out
Get on your blow horn
Make change we can believe in
And win back our trust

Three States Sue EPA Over Global Warming Ruling
Texas, Alabama and Virginia, all led by Republican governors, have filed petitions since December, when the EPA ruled that greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide endanger human health, clearing the path for the agency to issue mandatory regulations to reduce them.

A look into our future?
Iceland expected to turn down bank failure repay
REYKJAVIK, Iceland – Economically struggling Icelanders resentful of international pressure were expected to vote down a $5.3 billion plan Saturday to pay off Britain and Holland for the debt spawned by the collapse of an internet bank.
A "no" vote would create another obstacle on Iceland's difficult road out of a deep recession, jeopardizing its credit rating and make it harder to access much-needed bailout money from the International Monetary Fund. It could also harm Iceland's chances of joining the European Union.
The global financial crisis hit particularly hard in Iceland, a volanic island with only 320,000 people. The country's three main banks, hobbled by massive debts run up during a period of rapid expansion, collapsed within the space of a week in October 2008, and the country's currency, the krona, plummeted.

>>Yep, Nobel Prize in Economics. It's a lock.
The other tactic progressive use to elicit support for their agenda is to try and convince the public that only government can.... for example, make health care affordable and accessible, bailout banks and car companies, provide for the poor, stimulate the economy, create jobs, clean up the environment, regulate the foods we eat, make decisions for every aspect of our lives. They want the public to believe they are the arbitor of all things good and just. The contrary is usually always the truth. Almost every aspect of government is broken. They can't run the post office, they've bankrupted social security and medicare, they run a continuing huge deficit... The deficit this year will be almost as much as George W. Bush's first complete budget. Thomas Freidman in his recent column in the New York Times showed how progressives are going to approach the record deficits and enormous expansion of government, by telling the public that lean times are here. We're going to have to sacrifice now for all the years of plenty. The arrogance of progressives once again puts the burden on the people.
Stock up!

Barack Obama has been the most progressive president in our history. But, there has been one good thing he's accomplished. He's awakened conservatives all over the country. He so accelerated the growth of spending and deficits that he dropped the frog into the pot of boiling water, and the frog leaped out. Up until his presidency the heat was just slowly cooking the frog. He has startled us to the point of a massive awakening. Now we see what has been happening to our freedoms, and we are prepared to fight back and retake our country to what it once was. Do you want to live in a land of freedom, or a land of government controlled equality? The choice is obvious. Remember what William Wallace screamed before going into battle against the English lords, and after they started to disembowel him after his capture.........He didn't scream equality, he screamed.......FREEDOM!!!!!

arhooley and others expressed derision, but I think Beto has a point.
I've been drinking too much since Nov 08 but my dim recollection is that the MSM started publishing stories praising McCain-- the most liberal of the republicans competing for the party's nomination--at least a year before the election. While not backing him, the MSM hacks grudgingly gave him props as a "moderate", a uniter, someone who could "heal the deep divisions in America."
After 20 or so of stories like this, the press was calling Mac the front-runner, the odds-on favorite to win the nomination--and simultaneously printing stories critical of his competitors. The "Band-wagon effect" being what it is, lots of self-styled conservatives got behind Mac, and the rest is history.
There can't be any doubt that the MSM realizes they can do this every time.

They're already commies, they come here and get recruited to vote dem, and it makes sense because that's what they're indoctrinated with at home. You may be right in your analysis, Vic, that there just aren't enough seats, and that outcome wouldn't surprise me.
I am shooting for 2012 in the Senate. Rs will ride the Republican wave into the WH and Senate and even more so in the House. Hell, maybe in 2012 we can get a 61 vote Senate for the first time in over 100 years.
The we can make a smaller government by eliminating some of those Departments that Reagan wanted to kill but couldn't because he didn't have the Senate.
And hopefully there will be a wave of liberal SCOTUS retiring then.

44 A friend of mine who grew up in New Jersey is so upset. She is saying that people are moving out of jersey in droves. She says it is the upper middle class, the wealthy and the middle middle class. She says soon only the poor and the lower middle class will be left.
You are describing the dynamic at play over the last 50 years in all the big urban cities (of the north esp) and now it's becoming the dynamic of the big bankrupt states. Socialism/communism can only work by destroying the middle class, the so-called bourgeouis (sp?) of classic marxism. The truly rich stay firmly in place, with their foot on the neck of the middle class. The poor/the peasants are the foot soldiers who enforce the so-called equality.
Texas is a big state, but how many of the rest of us would they let in? If I lived in Texas, I'd start thinking about putting a fence along the northern border.

Herr Morgenholz, my almost-ex-lefty friend has flat-out told me that the lefties in this country grab immigrants the minute they cross the border and tell them, "Welcome to America and beware of the dangers here. The White people and the Republicans hate you. Always vote Democrat and do what your community leaders and radio talk show hosts say. You may have heard that you should learn English, but that's just a plot to rob you. You're supposed to get free Spanish-language education and free medicine here. You're supposed to get welfare, not be forced into low-paying work. Now come with me and I'll tell you more."
That's one reason why. Another is voter fraud.

Something like, "They like speaking Spanish, they like tacos, they like opportunity, but that kind of opportunity just doesn't exist in Mexico." I agree, I used to be in a union at one time and exceptionalism or wanting to produce or stand behind your company is sometimes frowned hard upon. The mentality is, you work for the union, not the company.

Conservatives of all stripes routinely praise Daniel Patrick Moynihan’s prescience for warning in 1965 that the breakdown of the black family threatened the achievement of racial equality. They rightly blast those liberals who denounced Moynihan’s report, “The Negro Family: The Case for National Action,” as an expression of bigotry. Conservatives are equally fond of Moynihan’s 1993 article “Defining Deviancy Down.” That essay, published in the American Scholar, observed that American culture had responded self-defeatingly to the breakdown of traditional social controls by redefining what was once deviant behavior, such as illegitimacy, as normal.
It turns out that open-borders conservatives are themselves flawless at defining deviancy down — when it suits their purposes. The black illegitimacy rate was 23.6 percent in 1965, when Moynihan declared a crisis in the black family. Today’s Hispanic illegitimacy rate is over twice that, yet purveyors of the redemptive Hispanic myth tell us that all is well. So was Moynihan’s analysis right then but wrong now?

peanut gallery:
The dysfunction you are ascribing to being Mexican is the dysfunction that permeates ALL GROUPS that become dependent upon the government and/or private charity.
Any socialistic society will create dysfunction because it will incentivize negative behaviors, especially in heavily populated urban centers. Go look at the trend lines for illegitimate births after Johnson massively expanded the welfare system and began subsudizing out of wedlock births.
Illegitimacy increased across ALL RACES - the only reason that it was more pronounced in the black community, for instance, was because a much higher percentage of black Americans were eligible for welfare payments.
Mexicans aren't the enemy. Socialism is.

Yeah, that's what they keep telling me about blacks. More outreach needed, I guess.
The only thing allegedly "conservative" about the average Hispanic or black voter is that they have no tolerance for homosexuality. (and hatin' on homosexuals is really not part of conservatism these days, as CPAC just proved.) Otherwise they're cool with big government taking from the rich and giving it to them, aka Peggy Joseph in the 2008

I've worked with several Guatemalans through the years and most were college educated, had good work skills, spoke English, loved and respected America and were thankful for the opportunity it gave them. They worked very hard and were polite and were here legally on work visas. Most of them wanted to save up as much money as they could and return home to start their own businesses and better their home country. However, if they wanted to stay, thats the kind of legal immigration I could get behind. Most Mexicans I have encountered have little or no education, have little to no work skills when they first sneak in, speak little or no English and have no desire to assimilate into the American culture, only turn small swaths of our country into Mexico one parcel at a time.
Why work hard towards the American dream and respect it when you can just steal it or its handed to you on a silver platter ?

Right, because in the process of working on it half of Mexico would be scrambling to get over the border just in time before it passes. However, knowing libtards, I seriously doubt any draconian measures would be put into it to keep out illegals even after it passes. Whoever sneaks in after will get to stay too.

I knew a guy who owned a construction company. He went to VMI and served in the Army as a combat engineer and munitions expert and considered himself a die-hard conservative. Back in '06 when Congress last took up amnesty, I was at a cookout and he was enraged about it and a lot of brown anger came out. I basically said," how can you sit there like a flaming hypocrit and say that kind of stuff when you yourself employ illegals and are just as much a part of the problem ?" It was almost if I slapped him in the face.
He went on a tirade and basically said with a strait face, "Look around, I wouldnt have what I have today if it wasnt for that".
I lost a lot of respect for the man that day.
I usually frown upon insulting a guy as a guest at his own home, but it needed to be said, bad. Needless to say, we havent spoken much since then.

ACO @200: I have more faith in my counytrymen than you do.
Funny thing about the people of the USA, they lose their way sometimes, but they always regain their bearings, and make adjustments, and move on stronger than they were before they lost their way.
Don't underestimate the resilience and the strength and the moral fortitude of your neighbors.
Well said, and reassuring to an extent. Trouble is, the Dems in DC are *not* my neighbors, and don't give a flying crap about whether I can afford to send my kids to college or not. It ain't their problem. When China stops buying U.S. paper and the assholes in DC start printing trillions of dollars rather than cut government, and we get 100 percent inflation in a year, so that everyone's retirement egg loses half its former purchasing power, how will the resilience of neighbors help? They'll all be in the same boat.
Biggest problem we have is that neither congresswhores nor Obambi listens to the sound advice of solid, job-holding, tax-paying citizens. Instead they listen to members of the SEIU and welfare-check-cashers and the like. Who have no interest at all in--indeed, no knowledge of-- a sound, job-creating, free-market system.

New name for the one who usually teams up with Lord Hades?
Yes. Classically, Persephone is the wife of Hades, but she died in GoW: Chains of Olympus. Saddened, Hades surveyed the breadth of his domain, looking for his perfect match and came upon her...

I could write 20 posts easy on why I have the same problem at Target but that would lead to a discussoin of shoes and handbags. So in the spirit of being giving, I'll keep my mouth closed.

oh, Lincoln, I noticed you use quotation marks instead of italics.
Why, you a-scared of the italics? Yeah, I know they're unruly little bastards but you can't be afraid of using them.

This is my favorite criticism ever. I'm saving it as I type.

Oh, crap, that commercial.
Sorry, it hits too close to home? Or is there more fire in Tartarus?
Anyway, since we hit the magic number on a non-ONT thread, I "regret" to inform you that this lowers The Flame of Olympus, thus accelerating the fall of Lord Hades and your combined kingdom.

Miss'80s,
Hitcocks and Psycho were the best type of thriller ever created, alluding to mayhem without all the gore.

My favourites are "The 39 Steps", "Jamaica Inn", "Saboteur", "Lifeboat", "Notorious", "Rear Window", & "North by Northwest". Apparently, they will try to make a reference to each film (that's a talkie).

That depends on whether the last one standing keeps his/her weapons handy for the fight against "Ma'am" Boxer.

after high school I had the house to myself in the winters because the folks were in Florida.
So one night, about 11pm, I was taking a shower. I had the radio in there with me blasting WAAF 107.3 Rock.
Okay, the power goes out. Everything is pitch black. And kinda quiet even with the water running. I was frozen because it startled me.
So after about a minute I relax and decide to finish my shower. THEN all of a sudden The POWER GOES BACK ON...the radio is blasting...I shit you not...
the beginning of Ozzy Osbourne's CRAZY TRAIN.
It scared the shit out of me.

Thanks Willow. It does but probably for good reason. If I knew a decade ago what I know today I would have made very different choices in life. Of course who doesn't say that at times.
Oh and if anyone is in the mood for a movie with an actual script, Godfather II is on AMC right now.

WAAF is still around...
but WBCN (the icon of Boston Rock) is playing Pink! Holy shit.
If you watch old reruns of WKRP in Cincinatti sometimes you'll see a WBCN bumper sticker on the wall behind Johnny Fever.

I love those literal expressions.
I think it was the late Richard Jeni who remarked about the phrases "Yeah, I just fucked the shit out of her!," and "I fucked her brains out!"
His punchline to the latter was, "Yeah, I think I know that girl."

radio stations are weird like that
it's kinda unsettling when you tune in and hear Kenny f'n Chesney instead of Led Zeppelin, for instance.

Back in the late '60s and early '70s, there grew up a type of young black con artist with a smooth rap. They were street-level hustlers who often targeted white liberals and hippies whose "white guilt" would not allow them to believe the sincere-sounding Afro-American pitching them a great deal was a rip-off artist.
Difference is that back in the day most people could spot these characters quickly and avoid them. We used to call them "jive-ass turkeys," instead of electing them and stuff.

It'll all come to a head in 10 years. The lib comments on that thread should scare the shit out of us. They Don't understand the difference between the deficit and the debt. I even see pundits doing this.
The numbers simply don't make sense. Someone in the press corps needs to ask Gibbs or Babar himself where he thinks he's leading us. They obviously don't have a clue
All 50 states will have to secede eventually, and we'll be seriously fucked. I bet an alliance of debt holders will try to take Alaska and/or Hawaii as payment and a large war will breakout. I think i've heard that in a video game before
