Five months after U.S. Rep. Parker Griffith switched parties, the voters of North Alabama switched congressmen.
On Tuesday, Republican challenger and long-time conservative Mo Brooks handily won the three-way GOP primary, earning 35,712 votes, or 51 percent, and sending the incumbent home. Brooks avoided a runoff by about 600 votes.
Griffith received 23,495 votes, or 33 percent, and former Navy pilot Les Phillip earned 11,066 votes, or 16 percent
looks like the Alabamans weren't fooled by the party switcher. Now we will have a republican pick up that is actually filled by a conservative republican.

Two ARRA signs have been on a stretch of road in Somerville, MA for several months.
"This Project Funded by..."
"Putting America Back To Work"
Nothing, NOTHING is happening on this 'project.' There is no project. Just signs.
And this is happening all over the country. They spent millions of $$ on ARRA signs to be planted at sites with no construction even close to commencing. It's a sham. It's all a fucking sham.

In fairness, I'm looking a little closer at those graphs, and the collapse in durable goods & manufacturing began at the end of the Bubba administration, and continued into the beginning of Bush 43.
It's just that in Bush 43, they never rebounded - it was as though Wile E Coyote hit the canyon floor, but this time, he couldn't bounce back.

19 Employment in durable goods manufacturing started its nosedive during the Bush 43 administration.........
Makes sense to me, Bush 41 supported NAFTA, and Bill Clinton signed it into law. Clinton also had a lot to do with the Chinese, IIRC his administration received huge contributions from them, and lots of American manufacturing jobs moved to China in return. Manufacturing is relatively easy to move once the ball gets rolling, and helping in that regards were the big industrial unions. If the US govt is encouraging you to move through tax policies, and your workforce here in the USA is trying to bankrupt you, why not move offshore?
As Jeremiah Wright says, those chickens have come home to roost.

The "median number of months unemployed" chart is the scary one - shows clearly how bad things have become. The manufacturing overtime is a good sign though - real, non-government demand for labor increasing.
Ultimately, the loss of manufacturing jobs is more due to automation than offshoring IMO. China's been losing manufacturing jobs as well: hard to work cheaper than a robot. Long term, that's a good thing, as automated manufacturing drives down the price we pay for everything, but the transition isn't helping right now.
I drive past the now-closed NUMMI plant every day. Tesla bought the site and it will eventually re-open. I suspect it will have far fewer workers and more robots, but still it's a sign that at least some jobs are coming back.

Posted by: Purple Avenger at June 02, 2010 06:24 AM (CEKC0)
And weirdly, I am optimistic over the longer term. These fundamental structural problems will either force us to make changes or destroy us; there is no in-between. Americans, historically, tend to ignore problems until they become acute but then act in concert to fix the problem.
You need to think about who "Americans" are in the 21st Century.
Blue State Americans - blacks, Mexican Indians, unionists, university/media types, corporatists, "middlemen" - they aren't going to support the kinds of changes you're hoping for.
There is still some hope in the Red States.
But given our looming demographic catastrophe, we are nearing the point where free-market/rule-of-law platforms can never again win at the national ballot box.

Which side are we going to allow to win?
When you see candidates running for office on the platform of repealing all sorts of laws you will know the electorate has woken up to the noose that has slipped ever and ever tighter around our necks.
Here's a list of a few laws that need to go if we are ever to get our freedom back--we must push back, it is too late to say, "Here, and no farther."
Seat belt laws
labeling laws
highway speed limits
national drinking age
smoking laws
inspection fees
occupation licenses
hunting and fishing licenses
Most seem innocuous but every one adds up to an intrusive state meddling in every aspect of your daily life. And that's the intent: To see the government everywhere you look; the ever-present video monitor of the fascist state is right there in front of you in the mundane and useless regulations you willingly comply with.
Basically, I'd say any law passed in the last 100 years needs to be sun-setted and re-evaluated as to whether it has had any of the intended benefits and whether the intended and unintended costs justify it.
Posted by: jimmuy at June 02, 2010 06:27 AM (fOKRF)
Jimmuy, I couldn't agree with you more. I have long said that the Congress (state and Fed) should be judged on how many laws they repealed, not on how much shit they piled on.
When I listen to the nonsense that comes out of Annapolis every April (I live in MD) and the newsreaders state the "accomplishments" of the session to include bans on texting while driving, helmet/seatbelt laws, etc. I want to fucking scream.
Our liberty is being taken away piece by piece and has been for a long time.

Who are those guys?
Who's funding them?
Remember the internet bubble? Henry Blodget was a rock star equities analyst and media darling. He was out there pimping, pimping, pimping internet stocks. Everything he reviewed was going to the moon.
Meanwhile, he was laughing about the junk he was pushing in private emails to his buddies.
The crash came and they kicked him off Wall St. Now he runs Business Insider. He's a piece of garbage, but I admit to reading it pretty regularly. A lot of it is fluff, overly simplistic analysis, and sensationalism.

Sorry, can't go with the dropping of hunting and fishing licenses. They fund the Fish and Wildlife departments, who manage game and non game populations for the benefit of those who pay the fees. Like ME. No licenses, no wildlife, no hunting and fishing. The end. Those fees are just about the only ones that aren't completely wasted. The Arkansas Fish and Game Commission has brought back the deer, the turkeys, elk, black bear, and wood ducks, along with many others. They are the only state agency in Arkansas that can ask for a fee increase and the voters will pass it, while all others are defeated. They do a great job, and I support them. Here in Arkansas, they bought and leased vast areas of forest for public hunting and fishing. In places like Texas, only those with money to spend get to hunt, for the most part. I prefer our system.

Individuals, hunting and fishing for their own sustenance are not a threat to the commons--it is the commercial harvesting that is depleting. Here's all that is needed to maintain the populations: No resale or transfer for value of any part of any wild animal. I'd say tragedy of the commons is a false narrative with no basis in fact or reality, Hardin never found a real-life example of such happening through the actions of individuals, that I know of, and I don't think anyone has bothered to look assuming the "truth" of the tale. (The state and industry, however, are another matter.)
What I'm looking at are fees and costs that are disguised taxes and general revenue sources. Your speeding ticket goes into the general revenue fund--force all speeding fines to be paid to the local school district reading fund and see how many motorcycle cops you see hiding behind bushes and trees.

113 RE: Fish and Game Departments--in Idaho they brought back wolves, and the deer and elk populations have fallen. So, it's not like they know what they are doing and they're run, by and large, by people who were required to get a "degree" from the very belly of the beast that has as a life mission the control and subjugation of free men.
Well, I got my first degree in Wildlife Management in New Mexico, and I assure you that my professors were not politically motivated. No politics that I could find in entomology, limnology, ecology of systems, Ichtheology, genetics, game population management techniques, etc. that I could discern.
Here in Arkansas, the AF&G Com. is independently funded. The politicians have tried and tried to take them under control, by taking control of their finances (to steal their money for social programs) but the voters rebuff them. If leftards are running your show, vote them out, and let your Game people run their own show. Some game populations are so closely monitored here, you have to call the dept. every morning to see if the quotas have been filled prior to bear hunting. Result? Bears, lots of bears, just the way I like it. Some people complain, the same ones who go out and spotlight deer in the wee hours. Our game laws are for the benefit of legal hunters and fisherman. I have never found them to limit my freedom, as I don't count over harvest as one of them. The minute people think the dept. is run for political ends, the rug will be pulled.
And yeah, they do know what they are doing.
Posted by: maddogg at June 02, 2010 07:17 AM (OlN4e)
That was true at one time, a fact that the eco-idiots refuse to acknowledge. Conservation was originally started and was successful because of the hunters and fishers. Unfortunately since hunting and fishing is widely popular those license fees have become nothing more than a never ending slush fund. In addition, licensing instead of being a revenue source for conservation has become a source of excessive regulation.
It all started with the migratory bird act which is blatantly unconstitutional. It was immediately challenged in court. But in Missouri v. Holland the court ruled that treaties were the equivalent of an amendment to the Constitution even though they are not ratified by the States or passed in the House as normally required. This is also where the term "living Constitution" was born.
We now have a host of eco-bullshit laws on the books. I would continue to support hunting and fishing licenses IF:
1. They were State related only.
2. ALL license fees were strictly dedicated to hunting and fishing related activity.
3. No restrictions are allowed on the issuance of licenses for anything other than preserving game herds.
Also Re 18 year olds and drunk in High School.
When I was in HS we a couple of students who would show up for afternoon classes with the odor of liquor. The drinking age was 21. I don't think the age makes a whole lot of difference. But if we are going to make 21 the age to drink, then ALL laws and regulations should reflect that age as well. i.e. no voting or joining the military until 21.

"And this is happening all over the country. They spent millions of $$ on ARRA signs to be planted at sites with no construction even close to commencing. It's a sham. It's all a fucking sham."
I said it when ARRA / TIGER was first rolled out, and I'll say it again. It takes a strong man of leadership and presence to calmly gaze upon a national crisis like our economic collapse and boldly design a logo.

@t-bird
Yep, no solace for the local economy yet, but still it's hundreds of jobs more this year than Fremont could expect a few weeks ago. A small sign, but at least it's more jobs, not less.
@Monty
Long term I think this is a great trend, as food and manufactured goods are fantastically cheap compared to pre-WWII, and fewer people are needed to produce the necessities. Still, I don't think anyone has figured out yet what everyone is supposed to do when we get to the point where farming and manufacturing are fully automated and basic necessities are nearly free. Nearly free still isn't free, there are only so many engineering/design jobs, and government hand-outs clearly aren't the way, so what are people supposed to do to be productive? America clearly needs to figure that out, since Europe doesn't even seem interested in the question.
One thing's certain: society starts to fall apart when people aren't grounded in helping to create something that other people want.
