Charles Koch Defends Himself Against the Charge of Expressing His Opposition to the Leftist Agenda
— Ace

And yes, as Brendan Eich could tell you, it's now a crime to do so.

There will be personal consequences for opposing the left. The consequences will not just be the political ones we all accept -- that is, if we lose on an issue in the normal democratic process, then we lose.

We all know to accept that as the cost of being part of the American democracy.

No, the new rules are not just that you will lose on the political point, but that you will then be hounded personally for having dared to venture a contrary opinion at all.

And no one has accepted that as part of the increasingly high cost of being an American.

I have devoted most of my life to understanding the principles that enable people to improve their lives. It is those principles—the principles of a free society—that have shaped my life, my family, our company and America itself.

Unfortunately, the fundamental concepts of dignity, respect, equality before the law and personal freedom are under attack by the nation's own government. That's why, if we want to restore a free society and create greater well-being and opportunity for all Americans, we have no choice but to fight for those principles. I have been doing so for more than 50 years, primarily through educational efforts. It was only in the past decade that I realized the need to also engage in the political process.

A truly free society is based on a vision of respect for people and what they value. In a truly free society, any business that disrespects its customers will fail, and deserves to do so. The same should be true of any government that disrespects its citizens. The central belief and fatal conceit of the current administration is that you are incapable of running your own life, but those in power are capable of running it for you. This is the essence of big government and collectivism.

More than 200 years ago, Thomas Jefferson warned that this could happen. "The natural progress of things," Jefferson wrote, "is for liberty to yield and government to gain ground." He knew that no government could possibly run citizens' lives for the better. The more government tries to control, the greater the disaster, as shown by the current health-care debacle. Collectivists (those who stand for government control of the means of production and how people live their lives) promise heaven but deliver hell. For them, the promised end justifies the means.

Instead of encouraging free and open debate, collectivists strive to discredit and intimidate opponents. They engage in character assassination. (I should know, as the almost daily target of their attacks.) This is the approach that Arthur Schopenhauer described in the 19th century, that Saul Alinsky famously advocated in the 20th, and that so many despots have infamously practiced. Such tactics are the antithesis of what is required for a free society—and a telltale sign that the collectivists do not have good answers.

Rather than try to understand my vision for a free society or accurately report the facts about Koch Industries, our critics would have you believe we're "un-American" and trying to "rig the system"...

Meanwhile, the Unleashed Left is also calling for "global warming deniers" to be prosecuted for manslaughter.

Sonny Bunch has written a post on The Illiberal Left, which is 90% of it. Though he does note one lefty, Michelle Goldberg, worrying in the Nation about the left's sudden embrace of Progressive-themed fascism.

t’s increasingly clear that we are entering a new era of political correctness. Recently, we’ve seen the calls to #CancelColbert because of something outrageous said by Stephen Colbert’s blowhard alter ego, who has been saying outrageous things regularly for nine years. Then there’s the sudden demand for “trigger warnings” on college syllabi, meant to protect students from encountering ideas or images that may traumatize them; an Oberlin facultydocument even suggests jettisoning “triggering material when it does not contribute directly to the course learning goals.” At Wellesley, students have petitioned to have an outdoor statue of a lifelike sleepwalking man removed because it was causing them “undue stress.” As I wrote in The Nation, there’s pressure in some circles not to use the word “vagina” in connection with reproductive rights, lest it offend trans people. …

At times like this, politics contract. On the surface, the rhetoric appears more ambitious and utopian than ever—witness, for example, the apparently sincere claim by Suey Park, creator of the #CancelColbert hashtag, that Twitter activists intend to “dismantle the state.” But at the same time, activism becomes less about winning converts and changing the world and more about creating protected enclaves and policing speech.

"Policing" speech is a bit of euphemism. What is objectionable here is that we have historically understood speech to be a mode of persuasion -- but that many (and more and more each day) see political "activism" to consist primarily of coercion -- intimidation, and the infliction of genuine personal harm on someone for having dared to raised his voice in opposition.

But they don't call this fascism. They call it "social justice."

Even this idiot sees the problem:

If this is the gay rights movement today – hounding our opponents with a fanaticism more like the religious right than anyone else – then count me out. If we are about intimidating the free speech of others, we are no better than the anti-gay bullies who came before us.

-- Andrew Sullivan on "The Hounding of Brendan Eich"

On the other hand, Dave Wiegel sees little problem at all.

19 Well, on the plus side, perhaps the fascists on the left have done something so fascistic as to blow up in their face and discredit them for a generation. One can only hope for a deux ex machina...but if it comes, one needs to be prepared to run with it for all it is worth, up to and including an independence movement. An armed one (though open warfare does not have to break out). Only the child getting its hand truly burned is going to drive home the lesson of not touching the stove, and allow for the American Experiment to continue in a properly resetted state.

71 "the infliction of genuine personal harm on someone for having dared to raised his voice in opposition."

Only certain selected someones are to be thus harmed. ("Some are more equal than others.")

When the topic comes up of what Eich did, let it be noted that his actions at least comported with the law. Whereas the black church activism in support of the very same measure, Prop 8, ripped right through that "separation of church and state" business which liberals claim to adore (Fen's Law again).

The rest of us operate in a world where it is just not done to have someone behind the pulpit of a tax-exempt church issuing frankly explicit political instructions to the congregation about how to vote. Or printing out, with untaxed church resources, things like voting guides. Hey, that's illegal! Knock it off!

The black churches have NEVER endorsed or operated under that principle. They simply ignore it. They have been doing so for decades now. And of course are never called on it, because no one wants to be accused of teh rayciss.

Normally, this suits the institutional left just fine, since nineteen out of every twenty blacks votes straight ticket Democratic. There are these occasional instances, though, such as Prop 8, where the black churches go off the reservation and their illegal campaign-support-under-color-of-religion go and do something the rest of the left don't like.

At which point the rest of the left take a deep breath and bite their tongues really hard. Because they simply can't afford to openly confront the black church about it. Those 19 out of every 20 black voters, showing up reliably and voting straight ticket for the left, are an absolutely central power bloc for Democrats, not to be dissed, ever.

So it was imperative to find someone who was safely white on whom the full dose of extra super concentrated venom could be unleashed. Hey, they found someone! Whaddaya know.

72 A House committee investigating the Internal Revenue ServiceÂ’s targeting of right-leaning groups has identified the IRS agent who leaked the confidential donor list of the National Organization for Marriage, a conservative organization that opposes gay marriage. NOMÂ’s donor list, contained in a Form 990 Schedule B, which it is required by law to file with the IRS, was obtained in March 2012 by its chief political opponent, the Human Rights Campaign, and subsequently became the subject of several national news stories that centered on Republican presidential candidate Mitt RomneyÂ’s donation to the group.

Though the House Ways and Means Committee, which began investigating the scandal in the wake of revelations that the IRS had inappropriately singled out conservative groups, has identified the individual who divulged the information as an employee in the IRSÂ’s Exempt Organizations Division, it canÂ’t divulge his name to the public or to NOM

106 The window of time is rapidly narrowing. At some point either the backlash against this happens peacefully, or it gets really ugly. I don't see a civil war like the 1860's with lines of troops facing each other, but more along the lines of the VC or the Taliban in an asymmetric style of warfare. This can't continue, and it makes me so very sad for my country. It is now longer the America I grew up in and being in my early sixties I've seen so many changes, and not many have been to the better.

147 I’ve decided it’s no longer worthwhile to try and accommodate these people. No matter what they demand, there appears no way to actually satisfy them. While not a large response, I have decided I will be using the word ‘homosexual’ in lieu of ‘gay’ in ALL conversations on the subject in the future. As you can see from the definition below, ‘gay’ is merely a euphemism for ‘homosexual’ which allows ‘gays’ to avoid having to identify themselves as being homosexual. For whatever reason, gays do NOT like being called homosexuals, but that term is in fact the most accurate descriptor of their biological makeup. I would suggest you substitute the word ‘homosexual’ for gay in your everyday language. “Gay is a term that primarily refers to a homosexual person or the trait of being homosexual."

149 No, sven.  Your mistake was assuming your opponents were like you, fairly honest and decent.

Projection works both ways.  The Right tends to respect the law, even when we disagree.  The Left, because THEY are lying backstabbing asses, assume we are, too.

I mean, to come out and say "yeah, we knew Barky was lying, so we voted for him anyway," what kind of person do you have to be to not only admit that, but think it was a GOOD thing?

If they had stopped at civil unions, or if the non-radical gays had spoken up against the group's excesses, it might have been different.

But they (at least the radicals) are lying grievance-mongering asses.

Not your fault for assuming those who disagreed were otherwise decent people -- in an honest society, they SHOULD have been.

Blame the Left -- and just know better next time.

No worries.

What I worry about is that any new Constitutional Convention is going to be promptly quietly hijacked by the left (as "the objective nonpartisan redistricting commission" was here in Commiefornia).

Said hijacked Constitutional Convention then ending up repealing a bunch of existing rights, while enshrining mandatory sodomy, a thousand dollar per hour minimum wage, and a U.S. version of the Vice Ministry Of Supreme Social Happiness.

182 Truth Revolt is the start of an attempt to fight back on the personal destruction game. Here would be a mean game the Right could play. College professors have strong tenure protections. High school and middle school teachers ... not so much. Yet I can guarantee there are hard-left teachers saying horrible things on facebook and twitter right now. A mean right-wing site would basically just pick one of those hard-left teachers at basically random every month and organize a campaign to publicize that person and all their faults and try to destroy their teaching career. Kinda like how the Gay Mafia got the little old piano lady fired from her community theater piano gig cause she signed prop 8. The point would be to get a scalp. And make even everyday normal progtards worry that maybe, just maybe the wrath of the online right would descend upon them. It's a vicious, cruel strategy. But it's one the Left has embraced. It's not one I'm endorsing, to be clear, just an example of where I see this game going.

We were doing "Life Boat" exercises (which of your classmates do you toss off the boat?) and "values clarification" and every other g-d thing... until my parents (mom esp) got involved. I had a couple friends who were either apolitical or conservative (one was a military kid), but the rest were extremely liberal/progressive and quite vocal about it by middle school. So what's the magic thing that enabled my parents to raise an independent-thinking person? Parents need to put the development their kids' values and intellect as their number one priority. From where I'm sitting, it doesn't seem to be happening.

148 IÂ’ve decided itÂ’s no longer worthwhile to try and accommodate these people.

243 We need to stop despairing (even though it is reasonable to do at a time like this) and go on the offensive.  We have control of how many states (Governor and the entire legislature)?  30?  So, we start by taking back control of the universities:  Who is hired.  What is being taught.  If it isn't being taught like we think it should be, that the professor's contract isn't renewed.  Which department stay and which ones go.  What policies are gone.  Who administrates the university.  Etc.

Yes, this could backfire but hasn't it already done so when we did nothing?  So what do we have to lose?  Let's do it and let the hard-core left get a serious case of the fears in these states.

245 Well, they can't organize character assassination campaigns against all of us. Then again, I see a future of automated intimidation. Programs that search out anti-gay marriage statements on twitter and facebook, ID the user, and launch email and social media campaigns to harass, intimidate, and render unemployed and unemployable the person who said it. Combined with search engine optimization so the first thing you see when you google the target's name is the attacks against them. The whole process could be automated.

267 I am seriously afraid that if someone discovered my opinions here, my husband could be punished professionally, maybe even removed. I used to comment on another blog. There was another Doc there and we chatted a lot late at night but never emailed. One day I wondered if I could figure out where they worked so I did some googling and licensing detective work and thought I'd narrowed it down. I called a couple of friends and a hospital I had actually worked at once and talked to an old friend. Bam! Knew exactly who they were, where they worked, even the latest gossip if I had called an old Charge nurse friend. After that I started being vague about personal and professional information online. Fuzzy dates and such. Everyone is perfectly correct to hide their true identities unless they are prepared to be destroyed by the Left. Post Script: Never contacted the Doc and never told them. Never see their Nic anymore either.

The 15mm WW2 miniatures game, Flames of War, had an Eastern Front partisan mini-campaign that ended with the following "historical" outcomes (for their fictional force commanders) -

The German commander disappeared after the war, along with a number of priceless pieces of artwork.

The Soviet Partisan commander linked up with advancing Soviet troops during Operation Bagration.  But the initiative and charisma that had allowed him to be an effective commander of partisans was viewed as a threat to Comrade Stalin, and he was disappeared shortly thereafter.

280 It doesn't help that the left is also absorbed into social media activism, where mood is the key motivator and the content swings several times a day. I don't there's anything we can do to stop or reverse it now.  Cultivate your own garden, create something beautiful to console you.  And when this all comes to ruin, as it will, and sooner than anyone imagines, resist by all means every plea to rally round and save them.  Resist the appeals to history, tradition, hearth and family - they know all the hot buttons to push and they'll push them all.  Resist.  Don't answer them.  The only way we'll ever be rid of them is when the temple falls down on their heads and crushes them to death; anything less just prolongs this obscenity of injustice.

289 For what it's worth.... I'm a gay/homo/fag.....I don't get upset at names. So have at it. I just ask that you hear me out before writing me off. I've never voted for a single Dem, or as I call them "communists". I believe in God, I drive a pickup, and build AR-15s. I lurk here from time to time, and enjoy the comments - 99% of which I agree with. Allow me to give you my insight on some of this.... I know/have known....thousands(?) of gays in the last twenty years....obviously at varying levels of knowing them. I have never met ONE who was one of these activists. Zero. I don't know who these activists are. Granted I've never lived in DC or SF. I used to email them when they would claim "the gay community wants ___". I would quite bitchily tell them they didn't speak for me, and I didn't appreciate them acting like we were children who needed them to speak for the rest of us. I'd get a mealy-mouthed/weasel worded response at best. If I thought there was anyway legal to stop them, I would have. 80-90% of gays are your typical LIV. Ask them about the latest celebrity news and they will tell you far more than you care to hear. Politics they are clueless. They are like Blacks - "Republicans are racist/anti-gay", and vote Dem reflexively because they think they are supposed to. I've known a couple who were hardcore on gay marriage. I do not know why. I debated them about it, and the only conclusion I could reach as to why it was so important to them was some sort of equality bugaboo stuck in their brain. Personally, my respect for Christianity exceeds all that neurotic bs. How does a piece of paper from the government validate a relationship? In the south there are conservative gays who respect God and country. Please don't assume we are all sick SF types who appear deadset on destroying civilization. You have some allies in our ranks, and I would hitch my wagon to my conservative straight friends if push came to shove. As many of you have noted. It looks like the Weather Underground is finally getting what they wanted. If you read this far thank you. And I will add this - I will NOT be disarmed. If we get to that point, they will kill us in some camp later anyway. I'll take as many with me as I can.

292 "80-90% of gays are your typical LIV. " sorry buddy, I can tell you that what you claim to be a minority is making huge steps. Even countries without ghey marriage (and very far from having also civil arrangements) have succumbed to ghey lunacy of homophobia laws or Parent1/Parent2 instead of Mother and Father. Barilla CEO comes to mind (and Italy is not in line to have ghey fraud marriage anytime soon). So the mafia is scoring important points and moving the goalpost even if they do not reach fraudghey marriage. If you tell us that the fascism is not even perpetuated by 100% of gheys (who are already 2%) but only a small minority of that, then we should all run for our lives because it is going to get really bleak. If the 0.1% of population is able to do this to the remaining 99.9%, then it means that the problem is way bigger than we think it is. You might not know personally those deranged but they are everywhere, here being the most notable exception. Any comment section of Yahoo or other mainstream blogs are full of uber militant gheys who would sell their mother to victimize people of faith (or christnazi as they call them). I am aware that the majority of those lunatics are liberal heterosexuals who just wants their gay friendly badge but still, you understand that this does not change our problem. The fucking idiot liberal Mozilla board are probably all straight. And those are the very same people who deep inside are happy not to have a ghey son but on the outside they feel the need to parade their rainbow trophy, because being validated by the ghey mob is all that is important nowadays. I guess the comparison between moderate muslims and full blown active terrorists is apt here, just that as noticed, the ghey terrorists proportionally are many more compared to mohameddans terrorists. I guess you are not doing enough among your peers to try to eradicate the hate, but do not get mad at us when pushback will come and run over non-militant types too.

293 @297 Thanks for the reply. I didn't know how I would be received here. I can't argue with what you wrote. I've spent the last 10 years trying to figure out how we (the US) got here. Like I said, I've always lived in conservative areas. So I don't know any of the gay political activists who demonstrate publicly. Maybe online they get mouthier than they would in person due to the anonymity. I know I do, but in a conservative bent. The gay LIVs have been told they are oppressed, and believe it. I am convinced most of the left's political activism is staged, and pre-scripted kabuki using Willi Munzenberg's playbook. The sympathetic/complicit (take your pick) press reports it all as authentic. Zombietime.com has some good photos of staged SF protests, and examples of how the propaganda was published in the SF Chronicle. That's why Andrew Breitbart was so dangerous to them. He was a master at exposing their propaganda. It's the key to defeating them. We need to infiltrate, document, and expose. Again, thanks for the reply. My goal was to inform, vs. change minds.

295 And once again fromabroad is spot on.

The fear of reprisal and looking intolerant is squelching not only real world free speech rendering the 1st amendment dec facto null, it's also causing "straights" by the boatloads to live in fear and walk on eggshells, assuming they are next so they self censor themselves to appear "ghey friendly". Look at Mozilla. Look at their press releases spouting PC garbage.

Too bad Russia's laws on this crap are not more common...
