Check Out This Wicked Hailstorm
— LauraW

Starts getting good at around 1:30.

An innocent topiary was harmed during the filming of this natural event.

Recall the state of technology in the US a few hundred years ago; can you imagine being a plains Indian during something like this? What did people do, besides hunker under their collapsed teepees and take a beating?

This is why houses are awesome.

1 The Indians used every part of the collapsed teepee. One thing they made from it was a tripod, so their footage was watchable.

LauraW, you know that Gaia wouldn't ever harm the peaceful, Earth-worshiping Indians by sending them hailstorms.  The only storms they would get are storms of love.

Why, the hailstorms and other environmental disasters we get today are Gaia's way of trying to get us to stop using fossil fuels and use solar energy.

True story:

I was on a Boy Scout 14 day hiking trip in the mountains of northern NM when I was a kid and got caught out in a bad hailstorm. We had to crawl up under some pine trees that had branches all the way down near the ground in order to not get our asses beaten down. And even then  the occasional stray stone would get through the branches untouched. It was a pretty cool adventure for a 15 year old, but I doubt that I'd enjoy it now.

9 I was in Wyoming trout fishing in August one year and a hale storm came up and covered the road next to the stream in about 3 inches of hail.  Then the sun came out and it started to evaporate.  I thought I was on the moon.

THEN, a snow plow came by and plowed the stuff off the road.

Must happen pretty often up there, to have a snow plow ready to plow a road in AUGUST!

29 A good teepee could likely withstand that hail.  They were typically made from female bison hides (about twice as thick as full thickness cowhide) and weighed hundreds of pounds.  Male hides were generally not used because then the teepee would be too heavy.

Probably would have been time for a new one afterward though...

Mortgage Foreclosures Hit Record as Job Losses Strain Budgets

May 19 (Bloomberg) -- A record share of U.S. mortgages were in foreclosure in the first quarter as job losses caused homebuyers to fall behind on monthly payments, thwarting government efforts to stem property seizures.

The inventory of homes in foreclosure rose to 4.63 percent from 4.58 percent in the fourth quarter, the Mortgage Bankers Association said in a report today. The combined share of foreclosures and mortgage delinquencies was 14 percent, or about one in every seven U.S. mortgages.

Me and 10 guys (with enough distance) could survive a legion, if God wanted it that way that is. The message would be "Don't Fuck With Ed Davis". My impression is that brokers are doing the same damn thing insurance companies doctors and energy companies are doing. Actauly, Teepees I've seen are well designed to survive this type of Hailstorm.

The Hides which make the walls would give (partly) under impact, thus absorbing much of the kinetic force behind the hail, without deforming like a solid surface would...

And the steep walls would cause hail to hit at an angle... once more disapating force, and causing the hail to "roll off" quickly (thus the weight of the hail would not cause collapse).

Don't disparage the intelligence of our forefathers... they did not have teck, but many of them were pretty darn smart.

148 Why is a, what, < 2% intra-day drop in the Dow freaking you out? Mainly because we've had triple-digit moves on 12 of the last 15 trading days. And most of those moves are *down*. That's not good news, no matter how bullish you are. It speaks of a hell of a lot of volatility in the market: investors are scared, confused, and ready to bolt at the slightest sign of distress. But as I've said before -- don't take the DJIA as an indicator of anything other than *mood*. Equities are a tiny part of the overall market; the debt markets (bonds, commercial paper) are a far larger and more opaque part. That's where all the real action is.

192 Hell of a drinking contest in that video.  One shot for each:

"OMG!  I'VE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS!"

You'll get smashed on your ass within the 1st minute.

193 Do an intenret search for "skeleton lake roopkund india"

Basically a group of ~300 people were killed in 850AD by a sudden and severe hailstorm. Trapped in the valley with nowhere to hide or seek shelter, the cricket ball sized hailstones came by the thousands and killed the travelers in a sudden and bizarre death.

We in the MFM would like to suggest to you that, in order to appear more versed, reasonable, and well-educated, that you attempt to expand your vocabulary beyond "Oh my God," "I've never seen anything like this," and "This is insane!"  While we can heartily understand the sheer unbridled giddiness standing as an unbiased observer on the cusp of breaking news and new experiences, we would like to share with you several other valid word-choices.  Feel free to use these without citation:

- Historic
- Unprecedented
- Unexpected

Happy jouralizing!

Where White Man Went Wrong

Indian Chief "Two Eagles" was asked by a white US Government official, "You have observed the white man for 90 years. You have seen his wars and technological advances. You've seen his progress and the damage he's done."

The chief nodded in agreement.

The official continued, "Considering all these events, where did the white man go wrong?"

The chief stared at the government official then replied, "White man  find land, Indians running it, no taxes, no debt, plenty buffalo, plenty beaver, clean water, Women did all the work, Medicine man free, Indian man spend all day hunting and fishing; all night having sex.

Then the chief leaned back and smiled, "Only white man dumb enough to think he can improve system like that."

201 I was walking home from the train station after a miserable weekend trip. I was cutting across a new park that had only young trees and no other shelter when it started hailing the size of golf balls. I'm running with my backpack and yelling ow! ow! ow! The trip was so crappy it was a fitting end to my weekend.

202 Okay, I feel real bad for the animals and birds that had to ride it out. How can birds survive? Worse, what about poor lost pups and kitehs?

@68 Maddogg "Ever been caught out on a lonely highway in New Mexico, 20 miles from the nearest tree, on a motorcycle during a hailstorm? I have. It smarts, it smarts a lot..."

Yep..Sturgis SD, Vanocker Canyon Road, golfball size hail. Surprisingly, our Kelty tent made it through a-ok when we got back to our campsite.

Hey, white man, your "houses" would be a fuck of a lot more "awesome" if they actually could weather one of these without a whimpering, piss-down-the-leg call to the insurance man and a couple of government departments, just sayin.

Less than fifty years ago, actual white men still lived who would mock you and call you a lady-part for running inside during this, when there was still work to be done.

Your technology is not what it's cracked up to be, see what I did there, your cell phones don't work west of the Mississippi, your engineers are illiterate, and you also can't set up a teepee, helpless pansy morons. Come the shitstorm, you're gonna get shivved by a well-lapped obsidian. But please enjoy a snide joke at the expense of fellow Americans while you're waiting.

206 The Indians used every part of the collapsed teepee. One thing they made from it was a tripod, so their footage was watchable.

I was reading an old journal from a long departed Aunt where she spoke of the time around 1917-1919 she spoke of the sickness killing folks (The Flu) and of two cousin's and two mules killed by a hail storm while in the cotton fields she said they were good mules too.

I would expect plains indians would just crawl under a pile of buffalo hides and wait out the storm then make ice cream after.
