China increases US treasuries holdings 2%
— Purple Avenger

The USA and Europe are both completely farkled, but apparently we're farkled slightly less than Europe?

China boosted its holdings of U.S. Treasury debt for the first time in six months. That development could ease concerns that lagging foreign demand will force the U.S. government to pay higher interest rates to finance its debt...
Maybe its a race to the bottom and they think we'll default last?

Posted by: Joe Biden at May 17, 2010 09:09 AM (9hSKh)

10 I'm not sure that China has much choice in this.  It sells to the US and gets US dollars.  What could they convert those dollars into?

China's holding of dollars is more a function of their export driven economy, and the fact that the US is the place they export to (for the real profits) than any actual decision on holding other currencies or assets that are worthless for global trade.  Further, if China sells dollars, they strengthen US exports at their expense and also cost their own portfolio.

In the end, China is going to collapse worse than Japan did in '89.

18 They really don't have any choice.  They are keeping us propped up and in turn we are keeping them sort of propped up.  If they don't buy, they are screwed, because inflation will kick in making what they hold now a losing proposition.  If they do buy, they are still screwed, but it is further down the road.  China is primed and ready for a huge bubble bursting in their faces in very near future.

Posted by: HeatherRadish at May 17, 2010 01:16 PM (mR7mk)

We're going to have to default, at some point.  The only escape we have is to grow out of our debt, but given that we have embarked on the most amazing anti-growth path the US has ever contemplated (even beyond FDR, since we are saddled with other obligations that are conspiring to bankrupt us), the future is not pretty.

China going down the tubes isn't going to effect our standing debt, butthe combination of inflation, lack of buyers for new treasuries, and general domestic stagnation will seal the deal.

We'll probably take the coward's way out and monetize the debt (which would take us into a real hell-hole that people cannot really imagine) ... if the US lasts that long.

Our only chance is to spur big-time growth, soon, and to rid the federal government (and state governments) of our insane obligations, but we have been moving in exactly the opposite direction.

Unlikely.  We could easily defend against that by defaulting (not that we would, because America doesn't seem to have the guts for that).

When China starts to implode, I think it's likeliest move would be on Hong Kong, to start rally extracting some of the great wealth, there.  China would also be much more likely to try and trade a big chunk of its Treasuries for Taiwan, which the Indonesian Imbecile would be more than happy to give them free (as he did with missile defense in Eastern Europe for the Russkies).

Way O/T, but New Yorker interview of Breitbart reveals he could be an AoSHQ Moron!

Breitbart is tall and burly, with eyes the color of Windex, silver hair that he sometimes forgets is no longer blond, and jowls that he wobbles for emphasis when he wishes to express outrage. He is fond of saying that he has two modes of discourse: righteous indignation and puerile jocularity. “I like to call someone a raving cunt every now and then, when it’s appropriate, for effect,” he informed me. “ ‘You cocksucker.’ I love that kind of language.” Constitutionally adversarial, he enjoys imagining himself paired with an equally combative leftist opponent, such as Sean Penn. “Sort of like ‘Barfly,’ with Mickey Rourke—that’s how I envision it being with me and him,” he says. “I’d hate him, I’d fight him. He’d fight me, he’d get in some punches, I’d get in some punches. We’d drink some more. At the end of the day, we’d agree to disagree. And then I’d punch him again.”

Everyone seems to assume china will not only survive this, but come out on top. I disagree

You have to understand China today isn't America of the 1880s.  China is totally dependent of exports. If Europe and America collapse or default, they are the biggest loser.  Because it will do two things. One it will devalue all of their holdings. What happens when 2 trillion in treasuries is worth 10 cents on the dollars. Further, the devaluation of the USD and Euro will make buying Chinese products too expensive. the reason we buy shit from china is because it is cheap, thanks in part to their currency manipulation. If the USD and Euro collapse, they can't devalue their Yuan enough to make up for it without damaging themselves.

Another thing to keep in mind, when looking at America's rise in the 1880s and beyond and China's now is population. We weren't over populated, neither was japan in 1989, or Argentina every time they default.

If the American economy tanks, as it did in 2008, all we have is increase in debt, social spending and unemployment. If the Chinese economy tanks, they will have massive riots, murders, complete social disorder, and possibly a civil war(with many factions, including regional factions that may cause in a break up of the modern Chinese State).

China has around 100 "roaming" workers. People who move from place to place to take menial jobs. If those jobs go away, you have a group 1/3 the size of america in a position of starvation. You think they will just take that sitting down?

China is in a far more precarious position that people think.

162 China may understand economic reality better than many Americans do. The US is not going to default. We're the sovereign issuer of a fiat currency, and we can never run out of money. Will high deficits lead to inflation as the government monetizes the debt? Maybe, but Japan has run huge deficits for twenty years, and inflation in that country remains nonexistent. Japanese interest rates remain near zero, and US interest rates are also very low despite two years of trillion dollar deficits. It's just possible that we're getting all worked up over nothing, and the Chinese know it.

#118, if China is balancing on a knife themselves, then why don't they prop up the US by purchasing US goods instead of US Treasuries?  It should be a twofer for them.  First it boosts the US economy which in turn strengthens the US Dollar.  Any strenghtening of the US economy will in turn cause us to purchase MORE Chinese goods in a win/win scenerio.  Since the Chinese Yuan is pegged to the Dollar, the Yuan will likewise rise in value.  In doing so the Yuan will become the de facto World's 3rd Reserve Currency behind the US Dollar and Gold.

Secondly, the rise in the value of the US Dollar will depress or limit any rise in the price of oil since oil is valued in Euros and Dollars.

Which makes me wonder if China's buying of US Treasuries instead of goods is like hooking a heroin addict?  Don't we already see Obama kowtowing to China in order to keep them buying US Treasuries?
