— Ace The negatives jumping by 10 points, mostly coming from the undecided category.
If you just look at homes without a public employee in the household (though I don't know why you would look just at that), his numbers are a little better, 48-36.
These aren't great numbers, but they're... actually they're kind of great for a Republican in a liberal state presiding over an awful economy.
There's some good news, too. Sure, they say they don't like Christie -- too mean! Waah! -- but do they object to what he's doing?
Nope.
Not even close, really:
Three of five voters, 60 percent, continue to say the state should hold the line on spending even if many programs are reduced, while just a quarter, 23 percent, say the state should raise taxes if necessary and continue to support state programs.
I think it's an easy thing for voters to say "Oh, I disapprove, he's too abrasive, he's too mean, those poor teachers." But meanwhile they back what he's doing.
A case of them choosing to hate the playah rather than the game.

Christie is doing what needs to be done. If NJ comes back from the brink while say CA slides into bankruptcy, I'm guessing his approval will skyrocket.
Of course I am still preplexed at the notion that union hacks get into teaching for the children, not the money, but are only concerned about the money. I certainly don't see angry public school hacks protesting failing government schools...

I think Christie's heart is in the right place, but if he's going to wage a war with the teacher's unions (and God knows, someone should) he needs to be more effective about doing it. And to be effective he needs to draw a bright line between the teachers, on the one hand, and the union bureaucrats and administrators on the other, and focus his fire on the latter group. Yes, I know the teachers support both and can be just as vicious in their attacks, but the public doesn't feel the same way about teachers. Period. He would be well advised to make some mealy mouthed "I'm sorry if you were offended" speech and dial it down a bit.

a disaster on guns, but maybe he just did not articulate his position well. He did say that he supports the rights of people own guns, but the problem is that in NJ it is not a right, but a privileged you have to grovel for, and forget about concealed carry.
I also understand his position on immigration, since there is nothing he can do about it in NJ and why pick a fight.
And on the big issues (taxes, teachers, budget,...) he is better than i ever could have imagined in NJ.

I don't know for a fact, but I'm sure they are the worst in the nation.
He did not say he wanted to grab, but that he supported current laws. That is a problem. Then again, he's a prosecutor and those guys all hate guns. They only see guns when a criminal has committed a crime and have this really strong sense that they are doing a great job protecting the public from the bad guys. It is hard for them to understand that people need guns for protection since the CJ system is not perfect.
I think a lot of Law Oficers would feel the same way (and some do) except that they are more likely to be military and private gun owners before going that route. The prosecutors went to college and have a different life experience.

The guy's doing what he ran on doing: blocking tax hikes; breaking the backs of the public unions; and just generally trying to rescue the state financially. In the process he's telling the media and the legislature, right in front of everyone, what they can go do with themselves. And he's doing all this in a deep blue state which affords him very little political margin to do, well, exactly what he's doing.
Since federal and state financial crises are going to be pretty much the defining issue of these times, Chris Christie is exactly the man New Jersey (and frankly a whole lot of other states) needs the most right now. And it's frankly a miracle that he's there at all. I'll leave it to Jerseyans to decide whether his stances on other issues make him a net liability, but if I were living there I'd be damned thrilled to have him.

Just a guess, but I would think Christie would want to keep the gun laws harsh to keep the criminals in New York over on their side of the line. Yeah yeah, I know those laws primarily hurt the law abiders, but if all it took to get a legal gun easy was a drive across a bridge then lots of crooks would make the trip.

I live in Jersey. Thugs in NJ and NY drive to Virgina and back to get guns. Remember the NJ State Troopers several years back who got in a shoot out on the turnpike with said gun runners and got in trouble for "racial profiling"? Frankly, I agree with War Between the Undead States, I don't really care about his stance on gun control right now because the house is on fire, metaphorically speaking. Its pretty difficult to find anyone who could get a perfect score on a conservative litmus test and still be elected to dog catcher in New Jersey. With regard to the poll, I live in a very blue area of Jersey, and while no one will admit to liking Christie, everyone is revolted by the behavior of the NJEA, and now, by some of the teachers. The more poeple look into how much money is spent, and how its spent, the madder they get.

Its a very strange state really. It has tons of beautiful suburbs, farm lands, some smaller mountainous ares, and nice shore areas, and the state is speckled with shithole cities, and they are what keeps jersey blue. Its fairly red outside the cities. Those cities though, man, like fucking Beirut.
Posted by: Berserker at May 27, 2010 05:45 PM (gWHrG)
both are court decisions, one says that towns can not discriminate against poor people through zoning laws (iow, developers are paid by nice Republican towns to build high density housing or they are sued) and the other says that towns can not discriminate against stupid people or something... whatever the logic, the result is that everyone is taxed to the gills, (school tax) and that is sent to these abbott districts where the stupid people live. I think i read that Asbury park spends 32K per student, most of it coming from other cities.
The only solution to NJ is to undo these ruling.

John Linder (GA)
Thaddeus McCotter (MI)
Peter Roskam (IL)

Aaron Schock (IL)…a member of the “Republican Study Committee” club in the House, and supposed to be a staunch conservative????? Aaron is in one of the most entrenched union districts of all, in Illinois…Caterpiller union workers are one of his biggest contributors. Hmmm.

Fuck the whiny libs. It's like a little kid kicking and screaming when his mom is trying to force feed him his medicine. They'll thank him later.
I say: God bless him.

Those cities though, man, like fucking Beirut.
O the irony that people are hating on Christie regarding the gun rights of those in the BLUE areas.

You know the old saying: "Everyone loves a charade." Well, it seems that the Census Bureau may be playing games. One of the millions of workers hired by Census 2010 to parade around the country counting Americans blew the whistle on some statistical tricks.
The worker, Naomi Cohn, said that she was hired and fired a number of times by Census. Each time she was hired back, it seems, Census was able to report the creation of a new job to the Labor Department.
Each month Census gives Labor a figure on the number of workers it has hired. That figure goes into the closely followed monthly employment report Labor provides. For the past two months the hiring by Census has made up a good portion of the new jobs.
Census fraud from a POTUS fraud.
Labor doesnÂ’t check the Census hiring figure or whether the jobs are actually new or recycled. It considers a new job to have been created if someone is hired to work at least one hour a month.

Even if by chance some dipshit Democrat can show up in 2013 and unseat him--highly unlikely considering how weak they are--he'll leave us in much better shape than when he assumed office.
Christie's greatest gift even if he dropped dead tomorrow would be fortifying Republicans with a backbone. They don't have to take this crap from the media and unions and go slink off in the corner or worry about a fucking invitation to a cocktail party. You got elected for a reason. Do your job and worry about re-election when that time rolls around. I doubt Christie is wasting a second of his time worrying about his next election. Which is how it should be.
Little did I realize voting for him last November would matter so much. Outside of voting to Ronald Reagan the first time I was eligible to vote in 1984, it's the proudest vote I've cast.

I get that, but you need to realize that the public does NOT see public school teachers the same way they see other public sector unions and until that changes he is going to lose any PR fight he picks with the teachers unions. Look, I'm all for Christie playing hardball with the teachers unions, and force them to make the kind of concessions we need. All I'm saying is he needs to turn his censor button on his brain back on when he's being recorded for posterity. PUBLICLY Christie must constantly praise teachers and how wonderful they are and how children are the future, teach them well and let them lead the way,et al. PRIVATELY he can grind into them and be as pissy as he wants. But the public can't see that side. That's all I'm saying.

155 Sally Ann Cavanaugh:
"When Obama's approval numbers fell this far this quickly"
Er, no. Christie's numbers have fallen, but nowhere near as far as Obama's have. Sorry. There isn't even a hint of a double standard here. Now if Christie falls about 3x further, if we're still calling that "good", then you might have a legit complaint. Until then, you're the one who's not to be taken seriously.

"Sean P, do you live in New Jersey? Cause this universal love of teachers, and the presumption that they are somehow downtrodden, is not what I am hearing from my neighbors. Teachers here are raking in the bucks, anywhere from 60 to 86 to 100 k, to 170 k if you are a superintendant. People here are figuring out that the public sector employees, like teachers, are making out better than they are. "
No I don't live in New Jersey. I live in California, where teacher salaries are HIGHER. And I also remember what happened when Arnold tangled with the teachers unions in 2005. He pushed a number of union reforms in the ballot box in a special election and was repudiated. His response was to castrate himself -- he went from a fairly effective fiscal conservative to a big spending sub-RINO statist in a matter of hours. Now California is in a bigger mess than ever before, and all because voters sided with unions when they shouldn't and our Governor turned into a raging pussy over a little pushback.
So for the last time, I am not fretting about poor noble teachers. I'm fretting that the apathetic middle still buys into the "poor noble teacher" stereotype and the unions will exploit that stereotype for all its worth.

As for the gun laws -- things are different in NYC and Jersey; you get a lot of dubious people going to Jersey and buying guns for rather nefarious reasons. I'm not pro gun control, but I can understand NYC and Jersey taking a bit tougher stance on the issue of registration than some other places.
Hey, at least they aren't completely banned, like Chicago...so if you guys want to toss him to the curb because of tough gun registration...well, we'll take him here. We have a budget to wrangle.
What was that a while back about no politician is going to be perfect?
Posted by: unknown jane at May 27, 2010 07:06 PM (5/yRG)
Also, Arnold, despite his tough-guy personna, really wasn't very tough when standing up to the unions. He didn't speak bluntly like Christie does. And Christie has really been good about getting out to town hall meetings, getting his stuff on YouTube, etc.
Also, Christie has California's bad example to point to, and we are now in a full-scale deep recession with lots of people out of work. I bet if Arnold held that referendum today the results would be different.
Being nice doesn't work with the left. He could talk sweetly to everyone and ask nicely, and they would still treat him like the devil incarnate. Example: Both Bush presidents.

@14: " I think we are well and truly fucked and think that these trends will continue until some cataclysm happens that brings us back to our senses."
I agree with your earlier points, but not your last. The sad fact is, an awful lot of people like socialism/communism/fascism. They like statist policies and systems. Nothing will ever change that. Whether it works or not, people will *always* buy into it.

Sean P rather than accept the premise that teachers are universally overworked and underpaid, and thereby allow the uninformed middle to hold on to this myth, why not expose it as Christie is doing. As I understand it, Arnold was also hamstrung by a legislative system in CA that makes for a fairly weak executive. Christie isnt running for anything, he is trying to govern New Jersey. Why not tell the people the truth?
Posted by: thunderb at May 27, 2010 07:26 PM (Scrz2)
Snort, I used to buy into the "overworked, underpaid poor teacher" spiel -- before I actually started teaching. It's not an easy job, but it isn't that awful either.
And now, now that I watch the local teachers driving around in brand spanking new vehicles, sending their kids to fancy expensive camps, doing fancy remodels on their homes or buying newer bigger ones (paying for unheard of luxuries even 10 years ago on a teacher's salary back then) -- while I'm scraping to pay my mortgage, crossing my fingers that my 12 yo. car keeps running, and see my taxes going up, up, up while at the same time the schools are having more and more problems and they scream for more and more money...suddenly I don't feel the warm, fuzzy love for the poor, poor teachers anymore.
Fuck them and the union they flew in on -- this keeps up they will need protection from the pitchforks, and some of them *used to be* my good friends (not anymore, they only hang out with other teachers, or school or county board members now...movin' on up and all that).
