— Ace I don't know if this was mentioned here. Readers tipped me by email, but I didn't write a post. Maybe it was sidebarred.
Basically a guy in New Jersey got a very long sentence for gun possession under very dubious circumstances. His mom had alerted police about him, as she was worried he might be suicidal. They stopped him, and found guns in his trunk, which they called illegal -- but they weren't necessarily illegal, as it's legal to transport guns when moving from one home to another, as he seems to have been doing. (Or, at least -- as he argues he was doing, and that seems plausible.)
Christie reduced his sentence to time served, so his nightmare is over. He'll be out of prison as soon as they get the paperwork squared away.
I was going to headline this "My Name is Chris Christie, and Despite My Protestations, I'm Running For Republican Candidate for President," but 1, that treats Aitken as if he's only a punchline to a joke about another man's political ambitions, and 2, thinking about it, I don't think this is evidence of that. It just seems like the right thing to do.
That said, refusing to make this move, and thereby identifying himself as part of the general Gun Grabber movement, which will use any law or set of facts in as vindictively a manner as possible to punish people for exercising their right to bear arms, would have been as close to an automatic disqualifier for Christie as you can get, so he seems to at least remain viable.
(If we can get over his squishiness on amnesty and the Ground Zero mosque, which I don't know if we can. I don't know if I can, I should say. Hey, I may be a RINO, but even RINOs have their own do-not-cross lines.)

That does him as far as I'm concerned. Those aren't small issues I have with him, they are 747 issues, on par with gun control.

The ACLU does not involve itself with the 2nd Amendment. Not their idea of a right, I guess.

Christie did the right thing here but I am still not sold on his acceptance of the second amendment.
New Jersey has some of the most draconian gun laws in the country. In an interview before the election Christie stated he was fine with NJ gun laws and thought they were appropriate. I don't know if he said it to help him get elected or if he believes it. Either way it's a deal killer for me unless he wants to change his mind.
Posted by: robtr at December 21, 2010 07:58 AM (hVDig)
With the sentence commuted, they're free to continue to appeal to get his name cleared and he doesn't have to worry that if he loses, going back to jail.
Posted by: Xoxotl at December 21, 2010 07:59 AM (CbVPH)
I agree with Vic. Let's see how it plays out.
There is some speculation out there that Aitken's side asked for it to be commuted (rather than for a pardon) because they intend to challenge the conviction and go for an overturn. That makes some sense to me, especially given that the judge was shit-canned by Christie (over another bad ruling).
So I don't think that it's fair to say Christie did something wrong - or didn't do enough - because there was no pardon.
Can't we just give the fat man a pat on the back for what he did do?

This particular judge has been mentioned in AoSHQ before. He was the asshat who pretty much let an guy who had sex with animals off scot-free because "there was no proof that the animals did not enjoy the sexual activity in question."
So in this judge's eyes, guy having sex with cows = innocent downtrodden citizen. Guy legally transporting legally purchased firearms between residences after clearing it with both Homeland Security and NJ State Police = Hardened gangsta criminal.
Reading the details of the case if enlightening. The judge really twisted things to pretty much ensure a conviction. Apparently the jurors themselves were uncomfortable convicting him but had no choice after the show trial the judge put on.

You're wrong about that. The defense did try to enter into the record that he was moving and the judge denied letting them do that. The judge also denied the defense attempt to enter into the record the federal law that says one state cannot override another states laws regarding the size of the magazines, ammunition and method of transport.
Reason has a complete history of this case. The judge was a dick.

While I agree to an extent, I can't see that the alternative -- cheering any R wildly, never asking questions -- is preferable.
Of course I also think Osama Obama should be sitting in a courtroom waiting for a jury's decision on his crimes by the time the '12 election rolls around, so maybe I'm what "Poppin' Fresh" would call an "outlier."
The problem, IMO, is that some people get so wrapped up in their candidates -- see: most Palin "discussions," the blather over O'Donnell before November -- that any questioning of said candidate's stands, abilities or record are immediately (and nastily) dismissed as "attacks."

I said Barbour sounded like Boss Hogg and he does. Look, I am fortunate to have lived in the south for all but nine years of my life so to me his accent is normal. But Tad and Muffy RINO in northern and western suburbia are going to see that he's from Mississippi and hear his voice and say, "Oh hell no." What he says is immaterial because they're never going to listen. I have no issue with him running if he wants to or people supporting him if they want to, I am saying that I don't think there's a chance in hell he'll get the nomination. Reality is that there's a large portion of the population that is shallow and superficial, I don't like it, but unfortunately a lot of them vote and they are going to be influenced by shallow and superficial characteristics. It's a major factor as to how we ended up with the current occupant of the White House.

Yes, but we need to see some research done, not just repetition of the Dem talking points and smears.
In this case, there appears to be a good reason why Christie didn't pardon Aitken.
In the Barbour case, we're talking about a 28 year old allegation - not even a quote - that was rolled out when he ran for Senate. No one has shown us what Barbour's response was then. What we do know is that he did win statewide office twice in Mississippi. We also know that he was endorsed by Espy, who is clearly a race-traitor for doing so. Those latter two points were not pointed out in the blog posts, though. They just repeated the NYT charge and went on a speculation binge.
Nor has anyone told us what's up with the staffer -- did he go work for the opposition? It's be nice to know these things for context.
I am not sure that Barbour, who has other shit to do running the state, should stoop to addressing recycled baseless charges. In fact, I think he shouldn't.

Are you comfortable shooting the cartridge and cartridge load in this particular model of pistol? Can you shoot accurately and reasonably quickly? If so, then this is likely a good choice; Taurus is a good brand. If not, then choose a different gun / cartridge. Sometimes a milder load is the plan, sometimes a heavier gun. This you will have to determine at your firing range. In any case, buy a quality weapon.

This.
IMO, A good defense gun is one that you are not afraid to use. Accuracy is nice, but since the average shooting occurs at a range of 24 inches, it's not the most important thing. Even knockdown power is less important than your comfort in carrying, drawing and firing your weapon. A .22 mag that you will drop the hammer on is better than a .45 hand cannon that you won't.

I've followed this case a little bit. It appears that his argument that he was in the process of moving to explain having the guns in his car seemed to be a blatant lie. His room mate claimed to have seen the guns in their home in 2008, the arrest was in 2009.
I'm extremely liberal when it comes to gun ownership. I think EVERYBODY should be able to own one or more as long as they aren't under probation/parole, even convicted felons after serving their punishment. People make mistakes, if they can be reformed, why keep punishing them years later.

Bush's accent wasn't as bad, plus he was from Texas (a bigger, more powerful state with a strong economy) and had the added bonus of being the son of a former President.
LBJ rode in on Kennedy's assassination, Carter rode in on the aftermath of Watergate, and Clinton rode in on "No New Taxes," a recession, and a 3rd party candidate. And they were Democrats, which is the ultimate trump card.

I think the point is that now Aitken's lawyers can present those facts to a jury and let them decide if it's a lie. The way it was handled in the trial, the jury was not allowed to decide on the facts.
So not only did Christie do the right thing in terms of what Aitken's lawyers requested, he also did the right thing in terms of justice -- because now they will have to argue/decide on facts. Had he pardoned him (which was not requested), the facts would never have been weighed by a jury.

The NJ gun transport laws are a disaster. It is very difficult to be in compliance as you are only allowed to transport if you are going to or from a range or gunshop. Stop at a 7-11 for milk on the way and you just committed a felony.
I used to go to PA with a gun -- felony. I used to stop by a range after work -- felony. When I would go on long business trips I would sometimes take my guns to my parents house for safe keeping -- felony. Maybe he was like me and moved his guns to his parents house for safe keeping at certain times.

I think that Gov. Christie saw this as the miscarriage of justice it was and wanted to get it straightened out. However much of a gun grabber he may be (and I don't know how much that is) I can't see that he's the type of guy would use some back-door method to start enforcing stricter gun control.
If he decides there are too many guns in NJ, and that some ineffective piece of legislation is the way to fix it, he'll try to go through the legislature. I think this, which, as I recall, was basically someone ignoring the fact that the man owned guns completely legally and that, sometimes, the law can't cover all cases, decided to engage in their own little gun control crusade, and Gov. Christie didn't want any of that kind of thing to continue under his watch.
Doing it so quickly, relatively speaking, also sends a message to the cops and DAs in NJ that this kind of case is not worth their time and effort.
Now, if that also scores points with the anti-gun control crowd, I'm sure he doesn't mind that a bit, but I really don't think it weighs too much on his mind one way or the other.

Really, I'm not disputing that voters can have stupid reasons for their choices, (can I get an amen brother Allen), but I haven't seen any evidence that accent makes a difference.
Jus' sayin'.

Well, not entirely because of Claytie's accent, I''ll grant you that. Just for fun, H. Ross Perot had a substantial East Texas twangy accent back '92 and '96 that many voters did not cotton to. He's probably got the charts to show you.

I just get a squish vibe from Christie when it comes to core values. Its like he's a conservative Mario Cuomo. He personally believes but won't impose his beliefs on others or some horseshit. It'd be nice to see him reaching out to the Palin-Rubio wings of the party.

It is the oldest trick in the Lib/Commie playbook to declare their opponents mentally incompetent/unstable. After all, anyone who thinks differently than them, something just HAS to be wrong with them.

@23
In my opinion, Taurus makes handguns of decent quality. However, I prefer their revolvers compared to their semi-autos. I bought one of their little snubnose revolvers in .32 H&R Magnum for my father. Not quite as powerful as a .38 Special but less recoil -- the old man's health isn't the greatest anymore.
I carried a Glock Model 36 when I was in the Detective Section. Chambered in .45ACP with a six-round magazine plus one up the spout. Not much bigger than my old Walther PPK/S but much more poweful. The Model 36 has a nice pointability and feel. On the downside, it definitely "snaps" in your hand on recoil due to being so light-weight a firearm.

This takes my love of Chris Christie from regular love to obsessive love. Love love love him!!!! I want him to be governor of every state, and President forever! Is that so wrong?
Bad Idea.
Never fall in love with a Politician, they'll always burn you in the end. I was a big fan of Newt in '94 & 95. See??

Well, part of government anyway. The other part still perpetuated the unreasonable component.
And yes, Ace, Christie did the rational thing here. This will help his gun tolerance bona fides a bit. A bit is a tad better than nil.
