Been a long time since high school science, but I was under the impression that the weight of the water that would result from melting a glacier would be more than the weight of the glacier itself.

No, the weight of a glacier is not increased by melting.  Conservation of volume and all that.

Ice is LESS DENSE than water (hence it floats), but the weight is identical whether solid or liquid.  Ice just takes up more space, and can sit on land without flowing to the ocean.  But once the ice melts and is in the ocean, the ocean floor (part of the earth's crust too, CNN-idiots) receives teh additioanl weight.  Utter absurdity to believe that marginal increased icemelt (it's not like antarctica or greenland is suddenly ice-free) would impact plate tectonics.

I think it is highly unfair to our Bronze age and Stone Age ancestors, this comparing the stupidity that we see today with their ignorance.  They at least realized the need for practical invention in order to survive, and while they may have worshipped Mother Gaia, this was done more out of a feeling of necessity bound in ignorance of weather patterns and geophysics.  They may have sacrificed virgins and babes to Ba'al in some misguided notion of affecting the weather through appeasement of unknown forces, but they weren't into mass suicide.

There is so much wrong with the above sentence that I wonder if this person knows (or cares) anything about science.

Greenhouse gases do not form an invisible barrier... they absord IR energy in specific bands (absorbtion spectrum).  They absorb that energy from the Energy coming from the sun, BEFORE it hits the earth... and then from Blackbody radiation from the earth itself.  Blackbody radiation is dependent on the Earths surface temperature.... and as the Earth's temp itself is not changing (just some of the atmospheres), said radiation is a constant.  That energy absorbed by Greenhouse gases is then propogated to the rest of the atmosphere via Conduction and Convection.

Problem is that all of the Energy in CO2s absorbtion bands is ALREADY being absorbed by CO2, and Water Vapor... thus adding more CO2 will do NOTHING... to increase atmospheric temps you would have to increase the ENERGY... which comes from the Sun, or the Earth itslef (neither of which man has ANY control over).

Ok, so let me see if I have this straight.  Global warming causes the polar ice caps to melt.  Ok, now we have plenty of scientific data to prove this isn't actually happening, but lets pretend for a moment that it is going on as we speak.

So the earth's crust is "relieved" of this weight?  Umm.. ok, not to be dense or anything, but if the ice does melt doesn't it just turn into water, so were really not looking at any relative change in mass? 

But ok, lets stipulate that one too..  this ice that isn't really melting melts and then all of the water that is generated mysteriously disappears into a Bermuda Triangle sort of thing, reducing the amount of weight on the Earth's Crust.

Now, since the crust weighs less (ok, granted even if the entire polar icecaps melted away this would only be a minuscule fraction of overall weight but again we need to ignore those annoying facts here) it stretches and rebounds, thus causing earthquakes and volcanoes?  The fact is that the crust is on average between 50 and 250 miles thick and that most of these plates encompass hundreds of thousands of square miles.  Even if you were to remove all of the polar ice from the North Pole your still only looking at affecting a couple of these plates at best.  So if you remove that weight these plates would move up, what, maybe by as much as a 1/4 of a centimeter max?

Ok.. so did this come from one of those scientists in California that recently discovered medical marijuana by chance?

Actually, I think there's something like hundreds of tons of micro-metorites and dust adding to the earth's mass every day.  Some mass is probably offset by some atmosphere getting blown away by the solar wind.  I don't know what the percentages would be.

I suppose in a hypertechnical way, water is lighter than ice, because ice has more air trapped in its matrix.  But the presence or absence of that air in any particular Di-hydrogen monoxide matrix--be it liquid or solid--is going to be weighing on the crust anyway due to teh weight of the atmosphere itself (typically expressed as atmospheric pressure)

We cannot violate the laws of physics, and gravitation is a pretty clear law.  the selective weight of a mass of water in teh aggregate may be significant, but how unfathomably stupid to think that a small percentage of additional melt (almost none of it being from land sources) would cause techtonic changes.

Isostatic rebound is real, and has impacts on earthquakes, but it does not come into play unless and until landmasses are made free from ancient glaciers, entirely.  It is an extremely slow process, and virtually none of the current melting is from land masses.

The stupidity of it is so profound, I originally didn't even read it correctly (implicitly assuming at least some real scientific principles were being used, if grossly misapplied).  He's actually claiming that melting ice (from AGW) has reduced the weight pressing down not on the area around the actual volcano (which could actually be true, although it would be absurd to think even that made a significant distance), but on the entire Earth's crust.  So we have the ice melting (so the ice has less mass), but he ignores that it turns into water, which weighs the same, and also sits on the Earth's crust?  Wow.

More?  Heck, the irony is that the vertical motion of the continents that he's talking about can make it hard to figure out how much the sea has actually moved! (Has the sea risen an inch, in a given area, or has the land subsided that much?)  I saw a detailed drawing of an English castle on the sea from 400 years ago, compared to a recent photo.  The water level hadn't budged, and there were structures in the drawing where a difference would have shown.

Anyway, if the Antarctic (where it's 50 below) and Greenland (still pretty f-ing cold) were really melting, the ocean would be noticeably higher. It isn't, so they haven't. And BTW, the ice at the North Pole has recently rebounded, and is close to a supposed "normal" level (as though anybody really knows what's normal up there!) these days. As if that really even matters!  (I'm sure CNN will carry that story any day now...)

Ok, so let me see if I got this right ... solar energy can pass through this dense cloud of "greenhouse gases" to reach the surface of the earth and warm it, but the reflected solar energy cannot then penetrate that same cloud of "greenhouse gases" and escape back into space?
