Dear Ace,
The birther thing that keeps cropping up in threads, etc., (no, wait, it gets better) has been interesting to me. When I first heard about the birther stuff I laughed it off; it's patently ludicrous. But it's not going away, in fact, it's cropping up more now than ever before, which I have found fascinating.
While I don't think Obama was born anywhere but Hawaii, I think I know why this is happening.
It's not Obama's citizenship at issue, it's that Obama doesn't behave like an American. By "American" I mean your normal American who loves this country, it's history and traditions, etc. Obama clearly does not and, even if he does, his policies, etc., do not reflect any America that I grew up in. I believe it's because although he was born in America he was not raised here. He was raised overseas. His earliest memories and experiences are not "American." No Brady Bunch, Happy Days, Carol Burnett, the first Bob Newhart show. Or if you want to be culturally sensitive, no Flip Wilson, Bill Cosby, Eartha Kitt or Sidney (pre-crazy) Poitier. Those things are not part of his makeup. Just as people from other countries say that becoming a citizen doesn't make you "French" or "Australian", being born here but being raised somewhere else makes Obama not an American in a philosophical sense only. 4th of July picnics in Indonesia? Doubtful. Thanksgiving? Memorial Day Parades? Sunday Night Football?
Such events and traditions, whether you attend or participate in them are not, are part of the cultural fabric of this country.
I know many immigrants that love all of these things, that love this country with a happy passion that they will gladly describe to you. But they wanted to come here, they wanted to be American with a capital "A". Those immigrants, as much as they have embraced all that is American, sometimes trip up even after being here for years: slang, references to cultural events or people. The thing is, they WANT to know what those things are and by his behavior, I have the creepy, creepy feeling that Obama does NOT. Those are the things of the prole, the middle or lower classes. He's never actually lived in America at all, when you consider Harvard and Columbia and the Senate, et al.
Obama has made one genius move, though: He doesn't release his BC. It's brilliant, really. It keeps the muttering stoked, it makes otherwise-sane people pause for a second. And he's doing it for one reason: to sow discord and division. It is what he has always done best. He would never give away the opportunity to sow discord on the Right.
So let's not let him do it. Realize that although he was born here, the reason he freaks people out is because he doesn't act like it. And he's not going to start any time soon. So now I ignore it utterly, but I don't blame people for "wondering." There's something "off" about our President (sorry, just threw up in my mouth a little) and it's hard to pin down. But his demeanor is distinctly Asian (I know whereof I speak, I've worked for Asian companies for 14 years) and sometimes when he gets a "soft" question from a reporter you can see that blank look for a second ("Who is the Sultan of Swat? He** if I know. . . Just say you love it. . ."). The more people see of him, the more those little flashes occur, and the more discomfited they are, hence the increase in those who don't think he's an American. Philosophically he isn't.
I'm just saying that we cannot buy into it. We need to come into November like a tsunami and sweep away those that are helping his horrible policies become law.
That's all.

No paper trail. No past girlfriends or friends. No transcripts. No thesis. No term papers. Nothin authored in the Harvard Law Review.

You only have to show the certified copy of your county's record of your birth. I haven't seen my hospital-issued birth certificate in many years, but I've not needed to use it to get a passport.
Related: people who point to the contemporary birth announcement for Barack Obama in the Honolulu newspapers should know that those have no bearing on where he was born, only on what his parent's address was when he was born.

I think he was born here, his short form birth certificate is similar to mine. I agree that there is something he's hiding who knows what.
He could end this thing himself by releasing the long form. Maybe he thought it would work for him by being able to marginalize his opponents. It seems it backfired. If 58% of voters have that kind of question about you re election seems doubtful.

"Well, if you're going to act as if you're suppressing basic background information because you have something major to hide, people are going to start thinking you're suppressing basic background information because you have something major to hide."
If Obama's political strategy was to keep the GOP and TEA Parties off balance by keeping Birtherism alive, it may have backfired. The longer it lingers, the less kooky it seems. And at a certain point, if it gains enough acceptance that Obama is forced to produce his birth certificate (or other documentary evidence that he was born in a specific location in Hawaii -- remember, he wasn't even certain which hospital he was born in, Queen's or Kapiolani -- he will just look weak.
Karl Rove admits a similar error in the wake of the Iraq War. He counseled against the Bush Administration vigorously countering the claims that (a) WMD was the entire reason for the war and (b) Bush lied about the WMD definitely being there. Over time, the mantra of "Bush lied, people died" was repeated so many times without official rebuttal that a lot of people took it to be true.

Never been much interested in the birther thing. But I was talking to my wife about Comrade Zero the other day and the point she made is exactly the same. While he may have been born in America, he's definitely not "American." He displays no comprehension of what American culture is about and his arrogant disdain for it is too strong to hide.
We've turned over control of the federal government to outsiders who have no interest in protecting it or promoting its values.

Obama is virtually a blank slate -- or perhaps a man with an untraceable background.
Anyway, Obama's parents are dead, almost all his family is dead or living in remote places. His aunt is untouchable, and the media isn't even curious about her. But Obama sure sounds great and he looks cool.

The furor over the birth certificate by itself is a distraction. The issue is what it represents when combined with the missing documentation and people from his pre-community organizer life.
We know almost nothing about Osama Obama before he entered politics. No one in such a position of trust has ever gotten there with more of his or her history withheld from the public.
The "missing" birth certificate is part of a pattern. The Traitor-in-Chief and his operatives have virtually erased what might be a problematic past. And no one in the mainstream of media or politics has raised the questions such concealment rightly raises.
Even if the Chicago Jesus was born in Hawai'i as is probable, there must be something he doesn't want us to see. He has spent millions (of other people's money) make certain we don't know.
Granted, he is innocent until proven guilty, but the mere scope of the erase-Obama's-past operation suggests there is something in the murky emptiness of his history that would turn the majority of his True Believers away from him, would perhaps expose him to legal action.
Once again: No one in such a position of trust has ever gotten there with more of his or her history withheld from the public.
And it's not about the birth certificate itself. It is about the documentation and friends/acquaintances that build up over anyone's lifetime, all of which he steadfastly refuses to reveal.
I don't say he's guilty. Yet. I say he's under suspicion, and rightly so.

If the concealment of that—if there really is a concealment, not an absence—isn't entirely strategic, it's because one or more of these things is on the original form: "religion: Muslim," "name: Barry," "race: white," "father: unknown."
He could explain any or all of those things in a way that would strengthen his bond with the 40% of believers, gain greater fidelity from his other 15% or so of off-and-on lovers, and partly disarm his detractors. But if any of that is there, he won't explain it. Splitting us is into enemy camps is more politically and psychologically useful to him.

2/ It became moot the day he became elected. As a matter of constitutional integrity (aren't we the guys rooting for that?) all patriots should have put the issue aside on Nov. 3rd
3/ I think he is a citizen, but he has an awful lot to hide. Too much. I think his natural state is to hide who he is, what he believes, and what he intends to do. This is very dangerous.
4/ The BC has become a proxy for how much we can not prove about the man. a dangerous proxy since it makes the questioners look like sore losers. Like the Gore was robbed crowd. We need to focus on the other stuff we don't know, and the the stuff we do.

I don't need to see his transcripts at grade-inflation Harvard Law School, though that wouldn't hurt either.
Lets see his college transcripts from Occidental college, where he started off, then Columbia University, upon which his admission to Harvard were ostensibly based.
I've speculated elsewhere that his college grades were likely mediocre, and that the biggest reason his transcripts are being withheld from the public view is because they contains all sorts of "basket weaving" courses, or other questionable fluff.
Obama said explicitly in his own autobiography that in college he liked to smoke week and hang out with Marxists. So one wonders exactly what it was that he was studying there, in formal terms.

Amen. The biggest issue to me with all of this is that there doesn't appear to be any way to challenge someone (The Governator, Jennifer Granholm for example) who is clearly unqualified. That's a bit worrisome.

I believe he was born in the US, but since he was adopted by Indonesian Dad, he very well could've applied to Occidental as an Indonesian citizen. And if he did, that would constitute a renunciation of his American citizenship since he was of age. Certainly would explain why all his college records have been disappeared.

Not necessary. Not any more. He has a publicly known record. His presidential one. And it's not quite spectacular!
He'll be removed in about two years - as soon as electorally possible - unless he can be impeached sooner for his power-grabbing methods, his legal bamboozling, or for using the Constitution as Charmin.

Thanks to Obama, and those awful Birthers, we don't really need to. For awhile, and when it counted the most during the election, hiding these things allowed Obama and the media to give the impression that all of the missing information was good. But this only worked because people didn't have doubts and didn't WANT to have doubts. Now they do and they don't have a problem with doubting. Thanks in part to Birthers but mostly due to the lack of releasing anything. Now instead we don't really need to see these things.
The long form birth certificate is now hiding something.
School transcripts are now bad.
Because they really are? Who knows? But everything else is bad so why shouldn't those be?

There is a way - each state has its own procedures for certifying who goes on the ballot. The birtherism thing has exposed that these procedures are laughably weak (i.e., just taking the party's or the candidate's word for it). Maybe the one small silver lining from all this birtherism nonsense is that the states will firm up their procedures a bit.

I don't put a lot of faith in the Birther movement, not because there's nothing there perhaps (they may be on to something for all I know, and they do have a right to ask) but rather it is a bit late in the game for it to do any good (the only time possible info might become relevant now is in an impeachment trial -- then it could be very valuable).
Nonetheless, this playing coy with rather mundane information is childish, irresponsible, and dangerous on the part of the president -- a true leader would settle any such questions promptly so as to quiet any dissent on what should be a very trivial matter. Same goes for his college transcripts. If there is nothing there, then why the big secrecy game, and if there is nothing there wouldn't it be better to just sack up, show the info and be done with it?
It's like a little kid playing "I've got a secret", trying to stir up shit.

Obamas records will remain sealed unless and until he judges that there is some palpable political advantage to releasing them, period.
Since the birth-certificate issue in particular only aggravates mostly cranks on the extreme right, there is really no reason at all Obama needs to act on it. Its to his advantage that these records stay sealed.

Ace - you are creating a low pressure system with the about face on the birther matter from yesterday's about face conspiratorial talk.
You hit the nail on the head though in suggesting the secrecy aspect of a whole buffett table of secretive parcels surrounding this president. Secretive parcels that have been placed in the hermetically sealed box under Funk and Wagnall's porch (one of the best Johnny Carson lines along with the Slauson Cut-Off bit).
Moving along here, most all background information on Mr. Obama's academics and his wife's have been removed from the public domain and sealed. That is fact.
So the question becomes why? And the issue as respects the birth certificate and its unusual components, thus become germane and the birther stuff is just following orbit of a larger question of propriety.

First of all, I believe that under Sharia law children can't be apostates. So in fact, no, if Obama was raised as a Christian or became one as a child, then he's not an apostate.
Second, Islamic law specifies that its OK to conceal your religion or generally lie to infidels if there is some specific justification.
Assuming Obama is a Muslim (which I don't believe) there would be plenty of obvious reasons why he'd want to hide it.
Libyan Leader Gadafi (among others) have publically posited this idea, that Obama is actually a "closeted" Muslim. While Gadafi is a known nutcase, I bet this idea still does have some currency in the Arab world.

Should he release it, as a technical matter? Sure. But since there's no force on Earth that can compel him to, why should he? He's the one profiting from the furor from his opponents. Why end the controversy?

At some point, he may lose control of this monster. When 42% of the people don't see the notion as indisputably wacky, the strategy of painting Birthers as nutbars starts to lose its potency. If it ever tops 50%, then by definition a majority will think it's not so nutty, and the idea will be officially mainstream.

Minor v. Happersett – wherein the Supreme Court stated:
The Constitution does not, in words, say who shall be natural-born citizens. Resort must be had elsewhere to ascertain that. At common-law, with the nomenclature of which the framers of the Constitution were familiar, it was never doubted that all children born in a country of parents who were its citizens became themselves, upon their birth, citizens also. These were natives, or natural-born citizens, as distinguished from aliens or foreigners. Some authorities go further and include as citizens children born within the jurisdiction without reference to the citizenship of their [88 U.S. 162, 168] parents. As to this class there have been doubts, but never as to the first. For the purposes of this case it is not necessary to solve these doubts.
Thus, by the Supreme Courts ruling, it can be argued that someone whose father was a British Commonwealth Citizen, and thus a dual citizen at birth, is NOT a Natural Born Citizen...
This is why he hides his real birth cert... and has fought all of the Birther court cases on the basis of standing. He does not want THIS argument before a Court of Law.

"So let's not let him do it. Realize that although he was born here, the reason he freaks people out is because he doesn't act like it."
The great Dorothy Rabinowitz made the same point much more emphatically in her essay "The Alien", which appeared in the WSJ:
http://tinyurl.com/25tdqyu
Money quote: "For it was clear from the first that this president—single-minded, ever-visible, confident in his program for a reformed America saved from darkness by his arrival—was wanting in certain qualities citizens have until now taken for granted in their presidents. Namely, a tone and presence that said: This is the Americans' leader, a man of them, for them, the nation's voice and champion."

Posted by: dagny at August 06, 2010 03:06 PM (pSFPI)
If you're comparing him against the actual color 'black,' then no one is black. If you're talking about the ethnic group, then he is indeed half-black, if either Barack Obama Sr. or Frank Marshall Davis is his father. As for the Arab thing, totally bogus. This is BHO, Sr. Does he look Arab to you?
The Arab meme got started when people went to look at Kenyan records regard BHOs family. Kenyans have a tendency to conflate 'Arab' and 'Muslim,' since almost all Arabs there are Muslim. But his great grandfather was a convert and very much a black African.
Of course you may observe that BHO II looks nothing like the first BHO. And that's what he has been hiding, I assert.
BHO has so much invested in the image of himself as an Africa just a little bit better than the average black American (I understand the thinking very well, for reasons some of you know). Having FMD as his father--or worse, some random unk black dude--makes him just another "mongrel."
Posted by: baldilocks at August 06, 2010 12:06 PM (eCBLw)
The trouble with the born in Kenya theory is that there has never been a shred of evidence his mother even traveled there. None. Ever. It was all a surmise to explain his forged birth certificate -- which was then proven to NOT be forged, thus obviating the need for an explanation.
Still, he sure is a sketchy guy, with a shady background, and shadowy supporters.
What's on the long-form birth certificate that's so embarrassing? Who knows. Religion: Muslim or an unexpected name in the Father slot.

This is annoying. No matter how many news stories from prior to 2008 that I send you which claim Obama was born in Kenya, You keep wondering where people get the notion that he might have been born in Kenya! You further express disdain for the stupidity of people who might believe such a thing (such as Michelle Obama who is on TWO videos proclaiming her husband born in Kenya) without ever thinking it is you who might be mistaken.
I don't claim to know if he was born in Kenya, but I don't claim to know WHERE he was born. He's got an Official fake computer printout from Hawaii that proves nothing, so at this point the fools are the one's who say they know where he was born.
I've repeatedly offered to prove that you can't trust official state documents on their word alone, by showing you two contradictory birth certificates for me, an adopted person. You keep not wanting to see them.
When are you going to show a little intellectual honesty on this issue?

Got any legal authority for that "renunciation" thing?
Legal authority? None other than my own, admittedly, cursory reading. From what I gather, the law is that, in the eyes of the American government, a parent can't renounce a minor child's American citizenship and that when the child turns of age they can either claim their American citizenship or renounce it. So, if Obama applied to college as a foreign student, that could constitute proof that he chose to retain his Indonesian citzenship instead.*
*assuming his parents got him Indonesian citizenship. I've read in a few places that he would've needed to be a citizen to attend school there, but haven't seen any proof of that assertion.
Posted by: TiredWench at August 06, 2010 12:15 PM (oPceJ)
I wish politicians handled the "birther" question more adeptly.
The next time some dick sucking jounalist tries to pin them down on it just say, "Well, look. I think he was born here, but I think a lot of what drives this is that so little is known about his background -- no college transcripts, no thesis, nothing published from the Harvard Law Review where he was editor."
"And so, people are bothered by that. All his known associates are all leftist radicals - Reverend Wright, Bill Ayers, Frank Marshall ... It leaves people wondering if something is being covered up. Here this guy is sitting in the White House jamming his agenda down our throats ... and he was never really vettted, so a lot of Americans are scratching their heads asking, 'Just who IS this guy?'"
Posted by: Warden at August 06, 2010 12:23 PM (QoR4a)
So, what it boils down to is :
1. No one "knows" where he was born. The percentage who say they don't believe he is a natural born citizen are really only saying they have seen no proof that he is. The percentage that say he is a natural born citizen, are really saying they accept his word on it.
2.There is no authority for believing anything from his two biographies-other than his word. btw, Glenn Beck is no birther, but he finally read the book "Dreams of my Father" and was amazed to learn that the "dreams" were to install communism in whatever country he was from. If your fathers dream was communism and you wanted to be president of the U.S., would you write about it?
3.There is and has been enough "strangeness" about him and what he says that almost 50% of Americans (so far) question his "history"
4. Because of his behavior and policies, people now miss Bush, are forgiving Clinton and reassesing their opinions about Carter.
5. The Russians saw his passport, he knows they saw it, and our relations with Russia-from the beginning of his administration-have been "reset'.
Posted by: fightobama at August 06, 2010 12:40 PM (6IV8T)
Yes. That's effective.
Or, to put it more bluntly to "journalists," use the "some say" style and throw it right back in their faces: Some say Obama was Muslim and he's trying to hide that association. Some say he's hiding his past so that more direct links to communists cannot be ascertained. Some say he has a middling IQ with grades to prove it but that revelation would diminish the facade people in the press have created. And on and on...
As I understand the craft, journalists love the "some say" technique to plant seeds. No reason not to borrow their creation. Information wants to be free after all.

My original take was that the BC was a trap. Get McCain etc to make demands for proof of citizenship, then pull the long form BC out to make him look like a dumb ass.
I don't buy the logic that if there was any proof of non-citizenship then the Clintons would have used it, and because they didn't use it, it doesn't exist. Maybe BO had something on HC, so they made a deal to avoid mutually assured distruction. Or they made a deal on SoS and her campaign debt? Who knows?
Because of the numerous husbands and potential adoptions, how can we assume there is only one BC? Don't they get amended upon adoption?
My current take [speculation, and I mean speculation] is that the BC is the finger in the dike. Give in on that and that increases the demand for the rest of embargoed stuff. My guess is that those docs show that BO at some time renounced his citizenship or it was renounced for him.
Big deal? I don't know. But I do think it would be harder politically to explain renouncing citizenship than it would to explain a religious affiliation chosen by your parents when you are an infant. Renunciation creates a beautifully toxic narrative, thus the need to close it like a gulf coast gusher. Forget the BC but keep asking for the other stuff. Imply there is something to hide. Force an error.
And for sake of argument, assume BO can't prove he is a NBC or there is conclusive evidence that he isn't a NBC. How in the hell do you untangle that mess now? Can we afford to put the country through that too. Its great to fantasize about an easy victory. But remember that is just one victory over one division. We still have about at ten year war to defeat the leftist army. We must choose the battles we have the best chance of winning at the lowest costs and the greatest comparative benefit. And we may have to take on battles that look lost from the beginning. I just don't think this is one of them. We don't have the luxury of putting credibility on the line for something we don't have or can't get the answer to.

Does it matter where he was born? I thought (perhaps mistakenly) that someone could be a natural-born citizen without having been born in the country. I was also under the impression that being born in this country doesn't guarantee citizenship because of the language used to specifically exclude Indians.
Besides, as a practical matter, isn't it too late to review the president's eligibity to become president? Assuming for now that Obama ought to be removed from office because he's not eligible to hold that office, what are the chances that he actually would be removed from office for this reason?

'historical' elections will take place for say a serbian man who thinks he has the will to lead us. this isnt a far fetched scenario by any stretch of the imagination. some in the media were clamoring for arnold shwarzenegger to make a run for the high office if you remember.

The whole birther thing is really about affirmative action. I'll roll it up for you.
Obama is qualified to be President because he is Harvard Law, magna cum laude.
But he is magna cum laude only because he was President of Law Review.
He was President of Law Review only because he was elected in a fit of affirmative action by bunch of embryonic hyper liberal Harvard lawyers.
He was only able to be elected because he got on the Law Review via an affirmative action process that reserved a number of LR places for those who neither had to grade or write on.
He was only able to take advantage of that because he had been admitted to Harvard Law.
He was only admitted to Harvard law because of affirmative action and his Columbia pedigree.
He was only admitted to Columbia by virtue of affirmative action after two unremarkable years at Occidental, an essentially open admissions college.
Of course all that falls when Obama's Occidental, Columbia and Harvard Law transcripts are released showing that he was always a 4.0 GPA and a 1600 SAT and a 48 LSAT.
Cue ... chirping crickets.
White America (a/k/a 80% of the electorate) -- even the fawning Gen X'er and Y'ers -- are going to say "Whoa" when they realize they are being asked to take an affirmative action flyer on the most powerful job in the world. Axelrod knows this. So, what to do?
Put Obama's entire history off limits for polite discussion, of course.
And what better way to do that than to slap down the "birther" card every time some biographical info is reqested.
Harvard grades? Birther!
Columbia grade? Birther!
Account of 1981 Pakistan trip? Birther!
Occidental financial records that undermine the born in a manger bio by showing Gramma was a wealthy Bank VP? Birther.
See how well it works?
hesitate overBut, if Obama can frustrate all conversation about just how truly much he is a product of affirmative action (something ) equate every inconvenient fact of his early days ... let's say by making inquiry

Yes and zero. Practically, I hope at least truth will out for posterity. More acutely, it would be useful to exploit the current circumstance to a) have all the States forcefully insist that candidates publicly produce documentation from here forward, and b) have the Courts decide who has standing to challenge residency status. This nation seems rather lackadaisical on the matter.

I appreciate the concern but, notwithstanding the forced solicitation of harassment funding from unions as per your example, I'm not convinced that box would be too cumbersome. Eligibility can already be challenged, but it seems to be the most supreme one, that for Presidency, which is uniquely sacrosanct.
If the requirements are clear and explicit and challenge given a cutoff point well in advance of an election, then abuse will be mitigated.

I don't think you understand. Neither one has a single mistake on it. The point I'm trying to make is that my Official Certified state issued birth certificate contains a bunch of data which are not true.
The state is very much aware that the information on my birth certificate is false, and still they certify it as true. This is a routine procedure in the case of an adoption.
My point is, the state issued birth certificate cannot PROVE I was born here. The one that has the DOCTOR'S signature on it, CAN!
Now do you understand?

What I recall hearing during the election:
1) In Hawaii at that time, there was a birth certificate and a certificate of live birth. Similar but subtly different documents. I forget which is which, but in Hawaii at or around the time of the One's birth, anyone could get one of these documents, where ever you were born. I suspect it was Certificate of Live Birth, as the intent was to state there was a live baby here. The other document listed specific place of birth details, attending physician, etc. The first is what Obama produced, and the second is what people ask to see.
Whatever was posted on his election website was identified as doctored (so to speak). Fields didn't line up properly, some of the language used wasn't appropriate for that period of time, etc.
2) At the time, and at Stanley Ann's age, US Law did not automatically confer citizenship to children of US citizens born overseas. Now it doesn't take someone looking into the future, a conspiracy, or even much brainpower to figure out that your child is better off with citizenship. I would get the certificate of live birth stating a US birthplace document if my child were in that situation.
Add to that only a couple of people claim to have seen it. One is a governor of Hawaii, who while ostensibly of the opposition party, would have to face down all the coercion that the office of the presidency can bring to bear in order to deny a native son the office they were elected to. Tough thing to do, eh? The others are Democrats and supporters.
3) Obama traveled to Pakistan at a time when US citizens couldn't travel there. How did he get around that? Transcripts from the several colleges he attended would open the door to financial aid and other records that could shed light onto his citizenship claims. Therefore, literally millions of dollars have been spent by Dear Leader to keep these records sealed tight.
I don't myself have an opinion on where he was born. Odds are good it was Hawaii. Like someone said above, trying so hard to hide something just looks like there's something to hide. I heard a lot of statements and facts pointed out during the election without a positive and comprehensive explanation later. So there are some unanswered questions. Yeah, I know, just one or two.
Right now, it would be a major mess to force him out of office on this issue. My problem is be having Dear Leader step down puts Biden in the Oval Office and McBotox a step away. I would rather have Obama there right now.
