Coakley Advisor's Memo on Likely Loss: Obama's Agenda Doomed Us
— Ace

Point fingers at us? Well, Mr. Fancypants, who saddled me with having to embrace a hard-left agenda?

Brown Capitalized on Concerns About National Democrats

— From the beginning, Brown labeled President Obama's health care and cap and trade plans as tax increases. Polling throughout the race showed this to be the most effective attack on Coakley.

— Coakley's lead dropped significantly after the Senate passed health care reform shortly before Christmas and after the Christmas Eve "bombing" incident. Polling showed significant concerns with the actions of Senator Nelson to hold out for a better deal. Senator Nelson's actions specifically hurt Coakley who was forced to backtrack on her opposition to the abortion restriction amendment.

— Democrats concerns with Obama's Afghanistan plan forced Coakley to oppose the Afghan war in the primary, which hurt her in the general.

And yet we'll be told all night this has nothing to do with Obama. (Except if she wins, in which case it has everything to do with Captain Wonderful.)

The White House shot back:

UPDATE: A White House official e-mails: "It's a little mind-boggling to see political consultants spin the election before the election is even over. There's only one reason to do that."

What dips, if you know what I mean, and I think you do.

17 I have little question that the antics in congress in the last few weeks did her in.  People are seriously pissed off at the arrogance and lack of respect for rules.  They really are beginning to see these people as the tyrants that they are.

I seriously hope Obama does double down.  The American people have neither the time nor the inclination to be mad all the time, and I worry they might lose the momentum that this righteous fury gives to the prospect of tossing some of these martinets out on their ass.

If Obama tones it down and goes more centrist, well that will be good for the country I suppose, but I don't want to see the jerk back in office.

Coakley is full of shit. I first talked about this race back in early December. Here's what I said:

Up here in MA we have a senate race going on to fill Deady Kennedy's seat.

We have 4 (D)'s trying to out-moonbat each other in order to win the primary. One guy, Rep Capuano (D-Pelosi's Crotch), is running against Dick Cheney. I shit you not. Capuano has a tv ad saying he'll fight 'people like Dick Cheney' for you if you send him to the Senate.

But all 4 of them are running ads telling us how much they love abortions, taxes for the rich, ObamaCare, Cap & Trade, and more money to create 'green' jobs. I am living in the center of the Universe of Lies, as Rush calls it.

26 If these memos are real, then Coakley may be doomed. This kind of back-biting wouldn't be happening if there was still a chance in hell of Coakley pulling it out. If the Donks are already in CYA mode, it means that their internal polling is giving them some really gruesome news. Yeah, polls are still open for four more hours, lots can still happen, etc. It's still not a done deal, and maybe this stuff is all some deep maskirovka being played by the Democrats to suppress Republican turnout. But I don't think so -- the stench of desperation is on them.

Coakley and all the (D)'s thought this would be a can o' corn, easy-peasy. They thought just by being Democrats and not Republicans was enough. They thought all they had to do was pander to the base and whoever comes out on top of the primary is automatically the new senator.

---------------------------------------

During one of the debates between the 4 (D)'s running for Senate in MA,one of them called Capuano 'the Sarah Palin of the Democrat party.'

This is where we are. We have (D) candidates thinking that just by invoking the name 'Sarah Palin' in some derogatory remark can score political points.

Is there really any way we should actually count this as a loss?  I mean at the worst its a push.  A seat held by a democrat is still held by a democrat.  But even that should be considered a win.  I think this a seat that the republican really has no business at all being in contention for, let alone winning.  It really seems like this is a win no matter what as long as we take the proper lesson away from it.  It tells us that no democrat is safe this year as long a we pick the right candidate to run.  As long as they have a message that doesn't come off as democrat-lite.  Brown doesn't come off as just a slightly less liberal version of Coakley.

Keep in mind that this year almost every seat should be in play and plan for that.  Make that the gameplan and we'll likely have the upper hand since the DNC might not be planning on needing to spend money in every race since they probably have some thinking of there being safe havens.

73 I'll bet with your education you knew that term long before I did. Actually, I first read the term in an old Strategic Studies Institute (SSI) paper of the Army War College way back in the late 1980's. That was when SDI was still big news, and some Air Force guys thought that the Russians would try to use electronic trickery to get the Americans to strike first, and then "retaliate". A year or two later I read Red Storm Rising and wondered if Larry Bond* had gotten his idea from that paper. Bond also incorporated some of the basic idea into the war-game Harpoon. *Larry Bond actually wrote most of Red Storm, not Clancy. But Clancy got cover credit because he was still coasting on the success of The Hunt for Red October.

A very realistic and well-written account of a "limited" nuclear war between Russia and the United States. Stephen Hunter's Point of Impact is the ne plus ultra of sniper novels (ignore the shitty movie they made of it, though). (Pale Horse Coming is a wonderful (though rather silly) book as well.) Hunter lost some of his edge in later books, but Point of Impact is an absolute classic. Michael Shaara's novel The Killer Angels is probably the single best book about men and war that I've ever read. If you read no other "military fiction", read this. Vince Flynn's books are a fun read, too.

95 " You see my fellow Nebraskans, all of your criticisms were unwarranted. My leadership helped kill this monstrosity. Feel free to acknowledge that I am totally smarter than your hick asses and re-elect me in 2012."

People didn't fall for that, did they?!

100 At 95 - You're on.  But it's not so much the casting I won't be able to handle but the reeling them in.  'Course, if we don't bait the hooks we can just sit, have a beer and tell lies.

Is the campaign getting people with video cameras out there?  Are you tipping Andrew Breitbart in case all that speculation is true?

106 I'll look for The killer Angels, sounds interesting and right up my alley. The movie "Gettysburg" was based on the book, and Jeff Shaara (Michael's son) has written several follow-up works. (Though none measure up to his dad's novel, in my eyes -- Jeff just doesn't have the lyrical ear for speech that his father did.) A sample, where Gen. Buford is waiting for the Rebels to come up Cashtown road: "Devin's eyes were wide. Buford turned. The modds were getting out of hand. He was no man for war councils, or teaching either, and no sense in brooding to junior officers -- but he saw it all with such mental brilliance: Meade will come in slowly, cautiously, new to command, wary of reputation. But they'll be on his back from Washington, wires hot with messages: attack, attack. So he will set up a ring around the hills and when Lee's all nicely dug in behind fat rocks Meade will finally attack, if he can coordinate the army, straight up the hillside, out in the open in that gorgeous field of fire, and we will attack valiantly and be butchered valiantly, and afterwards men will thump their chests and say what a brave charge it was. The vision was brutally clear: he had to wonder at the clarity of it. Few things in a soldier's life were so clear as this, so black-line etched that he could actually see the blue troops for one long bloody moment, going up the long slope to the stony top as if were already done and a memory already..." Seriously, read the book. It is purely beautiful.

108 teej, Larry Bond has a few Red Storm Rising type books out, also.  Red Phoenix, which takes place in hypothetical Korea, Vortex, which takes place in South Africa (my favorite of his), and Cauldron, set in Europe.  I liked all three of these.  I haven't made it through Enemy Within, yet, it's about US domestic terrorism.  The others I haven't read.

He's got good books, try them.

I also like the Stephen Coonts books.  My dad, retired LTC Army, swears by all the WEB Griffin series. I haven't gotten into that, yet.

I'm still waiting for someone to make Clancy's Without Remorse into a movie. If they stuck by the book, that would kick ass.

112 FYI, Michael Shaara also wrote the book that one of my favorite baseball movies was based on, For Love of the Game.
