I repeat: what the HELL is going on in this woman's head?
This was on WBSM 1420AM in New Bedford. Audio is here. This part is at 9:30ish:
Ken Pittman: Right, if you are a Catholic, and believe what the Pope teaches that any form of birth control is a sin. ah you don't want to do that.Martha Coakley: No we have a seperation of church and state Ken, lets be clear.
Ken Pittman: In the emergency room you still have your religious freedom.
Martha Coakley: (...stammering) The law says that people are allowed to have that. You can have religious freedom but you probably shouldn't work in the emergency room.
She knows that there are Catholics in Massachusetts, right? And other religious folks? And folks who may not be religious, but respect those that are? Eeesh.
Massachusetts is the second-most Catholic state. As of 2007 (latest year I could find data (DOC)) Massachusetts had eight Catholic hospitals, sixteen Catholic nursing facilities, and nineteen Catholic-sponsored organizations including hospice, home health, assisted living, and senior housing.
Coakley is an idiot.
Wait, Wait, Wait a Minute [ace]: In Catholic Massachusetts, a woman running for office just said that Catholics shouldn't work in emergency rooms?
Theory: The Democrats realize health care is an almost no-win proposition. They only way to escape damage is to lose their supermajority in the Senate so they can say "We can't pass it."
Has Martha Coakley done anything to undermine that theory?

Also, between this and that story on Big Journalism about her role in Fr. Geoghan's parole back in 1995, if Coakley loses, she may reach Creigh Deeds' level of FAIL (though maybe not the gap in poll results).

Funny how history changes on a single sentence. The great state of Texas had good 'ole boy Clayton Williams make that now infamous statement. Overnight, his insurmountable lead over Democrat Ann Richards evaporated and she won in a landslide. You wouldn't know it from listening to the Dems but was NOT the "popular" governor from Texas. She was a one-term governor who was spanked by GW in the next election. Without Clayton Williams, Al Gore may have become our insane president since W would not have been Texas governor in time to be the 2000 RNC nomination.
So... rock on Coakley. You know you have one more really batshit insane remark in you.

Okay. What Martha Coakley said was of course incredibly stupid. But I'm going to risk the wrath of Moron Nation here and say that she does have a point. If you believe abortion is immoral, then you should not work at a place where you might be called upon to perform abortions. It is still not justified to coerce Catholic (or any) hospitals to perform abortions, of course. But if your particular hospital is one in which management has decided abortions may be provided, then a conscientious objector should find another hospital at which to practice.
I like to think that the difference between this moronblog here and other outposts of pure partisan hackishness (whether left or right) is that most of us can actually acknowledge the merits of a logical argument like yours. I actually think you're right. But the sweet thing is that this is not the argument that Coakley made, so I don't feel too conflicted in hammering her. People don't show up to the emergency room for abortions, they go to the abortion clinic. Taken literally, Coakley sounds like a complete utter fucking moron: strong religious believers need not apply for jobs in lifesaving medicine!

Massachusetts voters have to ask themselves if they want this buffoon representing them ALONGSIDE JOHN KERRY for the next six years. I can't see any decent legislation emanating from either of them. I think it more likely they'll mechanically vote "yes" on anything Republican and "no" on anything Democrat, like Patty Murray in WA. Massachusetts will have negligible influence in the Senate.

My question is how many abortions actually happen in an emergency room? Is this now a common procedure? And, if there happens to be a circumstance that one will need to be done, isn't there normally more than one doctor in said emergency room?
Also... from what I can tell, it is not abortions per se that they are dealing with in emergency rooms, it is contraception after a rape. And honestly, I suspect only the most rigid Catholic would be against giving emergency contraception to a rape vision.

That's a revealing little window into how lefties think; that is, our rights exist because some government or another gives them to us. The founders, however, held that our rights are inalienable and that governments may not abridge them. The difference between those two views is the yawning abyss between liberals and conservatives.

Chemjeff: the issue has always been the decision by the Supremes that abortion is a right under the federal Constitution. You think abortion would be allowed in Catholic-heavy Massachusetts, if not for Roe v. Wade?
Fact is, that decision---considered one of the worst in Supreme Court history for its incoherence and lack of underlying legal reasoning---was forced upon the states. Harry Blackmun just basically riffed his way to an outcome he favored.
It's not a "separation of church and state" issue, it's a moral issue that properly rests with states, not the federal government.

Looking at those comments, I don't think there is any way around the conclusion that Coakley's conception of "religious freedom" is akin to those that existed before the American Revolution--"you can actually *believe* in that sect, if you want to--we no longer burn at the stake around here for deviant beliefs--but don't think for one second we are going to tolerate your funny business in any meaningful way."
In short, it is a promise not to prosecute for heresy, and not much else. This is not to mean that Christians themselves have not often done the same thing--they have. It's that neither is right.
Coakley has given us a valuable window into the creed of the true high-toned Democratic liberal--a belief system that intends to brook no interference with its Earthly plans from other religions...in which case, it is sadly "same as it ever was, same as it ever was"...we must reach the point where we can have certain things happen in a public institution (if the people so will it) and still have "conscientious objectors" work there and not be forced to participate. If we can't have that, then we are forcing a religion upon people, even if it be not called that in name.
And so that is my question and concern. Is this really about providing access to birth control, or about the destruction of the Catholic faith via the bank shot of social ostracism?

Are they mutually exclusive?
Don't forget the third possibility--closing down Catholic hospitals leaves so many people, especially low-income people, without health care (actual medical treatment...I hate when people confuse "insurance" with "health care") and gives the Dems "justification" to authorize state-built and state-run clinics.
Look how they closed down Catholic adoption services in MA.

When MA legalized gay marriage, Catholic Charities stopped arranging adoptions of children in MA. Stopped cold, just like that. Catholic Charities felt it was not in the best interest of the children to be placed in homes UNLESS there was a mother AND a father, and the state was forcing them to do otherwise.
So they have a history of sticking to their beliefs in the face of coercion from the state. If they are forced to provide abortions in their hospitals, they will close them down. Maybe that's one of the goals of ObamaCare, take over not just the insurance companies but the hospitals too.

This "conscientious objector" thing is about the power of the state to enslave. Right now, if you have a medical degree and you don't want to perform abortions, you're free to make that choice. If Coakley et al had their way, the state would command doctors to do the procedures or be punished (fines, unemployment, loss of license, probably prison). The state will own them.
(I don't understand why all the women whining about how there aren't enough abortionists in America don't go to medical school and become one...oh, wait, you have to be reasonably good at science to be admitted. And it's hard work. Unlike sitting on your butt ordering people around.)

Abortions are not performed in the emergency room. I'd need to check to see what the procedures are for rape patients (and I really could stand to go my whole career without having one come through my doors), but we have a fully-staffed 24-hour OB/GYN wing that I would imagine gets dibs on those patients.

Coakley, a Catholic, said church and her parish were a big part of family life. She attended the St. Joseph's School in North Adams, and she transferred to Drury High School in North Adams for her senior year. She said that she graduated No. 10 in her class in 1971.
She was on the debate team at St. Joseph's, and competed nationally in Chicago and Miami. Two older sisters went to private colleges in Washington and near Boston.
"Even though I was in North Adams, and I loved it, I knew there was a world beyond it," said Coakley, who lives in Medford with her husband, Thomas F. O'Connor Jr., a retired deputy police superintendent.
She hasn't lived in Western Massachusetts in many years, but she stressed that her upbringing shaped a lot of her values."

It was a joke.
And those were egregious errors (not talking about the garden BS). In one, it's patently obvious she went against justice, too. But I can forgive a certain level of error in a prosecutor. Even when those errors ruin lives, it's a job that's really hard to do, with a judge and jury who are supposed to check the DA's case out. We're only human.
Coakley went beyond the level I'll forgive, and I was just kidding when I said she was an undercover republican, but don't be surprised when some democrats make that accusation. She really has done nothing right in this election. Shit, she basically vacations for most of it, and this is by far the most crucial and prestigious application in her career.

I went to a Catholic high school and during self-defense seminars, the girls were always told to 1) call the cops 2) get our asses to an emergency room before ANYTHING else in the event of rape. The immediate application of a D&C wasn't specified, but implied.

The State Police Association of Massachusetts today (1/11/10) endorsed Scott BrownÂ’s bid for U.S. Senate, citing his determination to keep America safe by treating terrorists as enemy combatants and not as ordinary criminals.
Brown also received the support of the Commissioned Officers Association of the Massachusetts State Police, a body that represents state troopers at the rank of lieutenant and above.

peaches, she is married to a former police superintendent and the former DA and the cops turned their back on her. Wow, she is uber popular isn't she. That is just bizarre cops are very loyal to other cops and they support former DA...they must be mad at her

President Barack Obama today offered Republican Scott Brown a vote of confidence. How? He issued a video in support of Martha Coakley. The political equivalent of a handshake instead of a kiss, the president is resisting requests from Coakley to schedule a campaign stop here. Indicating that his information points to a Scott Brown win.
“It’s not on our schedule to go to next week,” White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said matter-of-factly.
Obama doesn’t need to be connected to any more losing Democrats – especially in a state like Massachusetts, where Ted Kennedy is supposed reach from the grave to lift his party’s nominee into office. Conversely, if Coakley was leading, Obama would be pulling into town with guns blazing so that he could take credit for the kill on Wednesday.
If trends change – we’ll know – when the White House announces an Obama visit. In the meantime, there have been no internal numbers leaked by the Coakley campaign since Monday, when they released bogus numbers indicating a 14 point lead. Why bogus?
Mellman surveyed 800 likely voters on Jan. 8-10. His sample included 49 percent self-identified Democrats, 25 percent independents and 24 percent Republicans.
Notice the 25% independent voters surveyed? Massachusetts is more than 50% independents, and they are leaning strongly toward Scott Brown by most measures. As you would expect.
National Republicans tracking the race declined to reveal their own internal poll numbers. But a GOP strategist involved in the contest asked “If the Democrats honestly believe their lead is as strong as this poll suggests then why are they rushing staff, money and other resources up to Massachusetts?”
More importantly, the Coakley poll was completed before Monday nightÂ’s prime time, multi-station debate, in which Coakley was flatter and less appealing than normal while Scott was very effective in getting his message out.

The panic at the White House must be as palpable as the rage in Congress, where Democrats are privately blaming a terribly mismanaged first year by the president for putting their careers in danger.
Obama says in the video that “opponents of change” are “pouring money” into Massachusetts to “tie up the Senate” and prevent a vote on health insurance reform, financial reform, and other issues important to the nation.
What Obama doesnÂ’t say, however, is that the pro-Coakley outside forces have actually outspent the anti-Coakley forces by an almost two-to-one margin, as Chris Cillizza reported earlier today at The Fix blog at WashingtonPost.com.
While the Obama presidency has blown all of its political capital on the public option and has little steam left, a Scott Brown win would mark a clear line of demarcation for even the politically disengaged to understand – the official end of Hope & Change.

The trouble in Massachusetts is not that people would vote Republican – it’s that the liberal base is so depressed that they’re choosing not to vote. In the poll that showed Brown winning by one point, 66% of Republican voters said they were “very excited” about turning out – whereas only 48% of Democrats said the same. And independents, who voted with Democrats in 2006 and 2008, support Brown by a two-to-one margin.
Which independents will show up to vote? Not casual ones, the sort who will be swayed by a Kennedy Klan endorsement or even a Bill Clinton appearance. The IÂ’s who will vote are motivated, and thereÂ’s nothing about Martha Coakley thatÂ’s motivational.
A Research 2000 poll from late November asked if respondents were “definitely going to vote” in 2010. Only 56% of Democrats said “yes,” compared with 81% of Republicans – a wider gap than what we see in Massachusetts. If this holds up, said Markos Moulitsas, “we’re gonna get killed.”
It gets worse. Look at the problem the left leaning Research 2000 has had calling some recent races.
In 2009 there were two statewide races for governor. In New Jersey, R200 showed Republican Christ Christie winning by only 1%, but on election day Christie won by 4.3%. R2000 was off by 3.3%, favoring the Democrat, but within their 4% margin of error.
In Viringia, R2000 showed Republican Bob McDonnell with a 10% lead, but on election day McDonnell won by 17.5%. R2000 was off by 7.5%, favoring the Democrat, and well outside their 4% margin of error.
Most every poll that’s been released on this race indicates that the lower the turnout, the better Scott Brown’s chances are of beating Coakley. In other words, he has the largest number of motivated voters – if only motivated voters show up, Coakley’s croaked.
The new Rasmussen Reports poll shows that Brown is ahead by two percentage points among those who are absolutely certain they will vote. A week ago, he trailed by two among those certain to vote.
Which brings me around to why I think the Coakley people feel this race is all but over. Coakley went on the air with her first TV commercial in the middle of last week, just after the first Rasmussen poll showed her with just a 9 point lead. After a day or two of a puffy commercial, theyÂ’ve gone all negative. Smarmy, evil sounding ads, one after another, in heavy rotation, are pummeling voters with Brown Hate.
We know two things about attack ads. First, they take a toll on the attacker. The attacker has to have enough credibility with voters to be able to undermine her opponentÂ’s credibility and survive the boomerang effect. Second, they depress turnout.
Scott Brown was on the air before Coakley, running ads that built a positive image of him as a fiscally responsible candidate in the image of Jack Kennedy, and a family man who stood outside the machinery of power politics. Coakley was coasting, taking her election for granted, so Scott got to establish rapport with voters. She lacks the credibility to dismantle the positive image heÂ’s created, something her camp knows, but is ignoring. Why? They have no choice.
We already know that Scott benefits from a lower turnout, yet Coakley is depressing turnout by running a negative campaign. Women, in particular, who favor Coakley, are turned off by attack ads. Yet, she attacks relentlessly. Why? She has nothing left but to hope that she can destroy Brown. Not likely, but what else can she do?
If she thought she still had a chance, the attack ads would not be so relentless. TheyÂ’d be mixed up with more positive ads of Coakley, and theyÂ’d be mixed with more issue ads to show her seriousness. Apparently, in the eyes of her campaign brain trust, itÂ’s too late for that.
ThatÂ’s my take.

Theory: The Democrats realize health care is an almost no-win proposition. They only way to escape damage is to lose their supermajority in the Senate so they can say "We can't pass it."
Has Martha Coakley done anything to undermine that theory?"
Well, Coakley does appear to be really, really crazy and unvetted, or deliberately throwing the match.
But what's the point of this scheme Ace brings up? To win elections? Lose elections to win elections?
They can't just admit to the people that these bills are just not working out, and it's better not to destroy the economy and health care and wait? Wouldn't they look more responsible? Sadly, I guess they wouldn't look responsible if they admitted the truth.

Also, can't the Dem find a reliable vote without scraping the bottom of the intelligence barrel like this?

Yet all the politicians are pro-choice Catholics because apparently Catholics will not vote pro-life candidates.
Add to Mass Catholic's the bizarre behavior, the Catholic Church is also the single largest denomination in America yet 50% of weekly Catholic goers voted for the President whose position against the sanctity of life is more extreme than NARAL.
Oh what a tangle web Catholics weave.
The easiest step to unravel the deception is for Catholics to end their practice of empowering The Party of Death.
Unfortunately too many Catholics like the government's do-gooder silver entitlement coins for them to stop sleeping with the abortion movement.
Perhaps Catholics could stop fooling with snakes and they won't get bitten time and again, year after year, decade after decade.

Aren't we missing the FUNDAMENTAL flaw in Coakley's views of "rights"?
Referring the 'religious freedom', she stated:
"The law says that people are allowed to have that. "
Totally false. US law states that people are not 'allowed' rights by the law, they possess those rights by natural right, and that governments are not allowed to infringe on them. US law is not the source of human rights, it is a constraint (or was intended to be) on governmental restrictions on those pre-existing rights.
And she was the state's top lawyer? Hideous.

You Christians just don't get it. You will someday. When you're the one in the emergency room who gets a Muslim doctor.

Martha Coakley: (...stammering) The law says that people are allowed to have that. You can have religious freedom but you probably shouldn't work in the emergency room.
