Comment Problems
— Pixy Misa

Yep, I can see the problem where not all the comments show up and you need to reload, sometimes two or three times.

Not sure what it is yet, but I'll keep working on it.

Update: Looks like the virtual server running the New Comments Thingy needed some network parameters tweaked - it was running out of TCP buffers. I've tweaked what needed tweaking and rebooted the virtual server (which is great - it takes about three seconds) and things seem much better now.

Let me know if you still have problems.

Update: Okay, the cause of the cause of the problems was a spam flood. Blocked the spammers now, so things should be happy again.

If you still have problems, blame Canada China.

The spammers were using about 20x the resources that you actual readers are using this time of night.

Update: Do not cook the server hamsters!

1 I dunno if I'm first to this thread, or it's just buggy -- but I see no comments at all.

Posted by: least at January 03, 2010 10:57 PM (V2gs7)

2 ok - at least I can see my comment. Anyone else out there?

Posted by: least at January 03, 2010 10:58 PM (V2gs7)

3 I don't think alot of people are commenting at this hour.

4 Naw, you are the duty reader tonight.

Posted by: Larry Sheldon at January 03, 2010 11:11 PM (OmeRL)

5 It's still doing it, only now I have to reload twice instead of 4-5 times.  Whatever the server is doing, it blows.

Posted by: Hatchet Five at January 03, 2010 11:17 PM (1J5/y)

6 We're all asleep now.

The problem was dependent on the size of the comment thread and the number of people online at the time, which is why it came and went like that.  I've allocated the server five times as much memory for network buffers, so we should be good for a while.

Posted by: Pixy Misa at January 03, 2010 11:17 PM (2yngH)

7 Still doing it Hatchet Five?

Bleh.  I'll keep looking then.

I have a problem with the outcome of the Jets/Bengal's game.

9 I can fix their TCP buffers if you like.

Posted by: Pixy Misa at January 03, 2010 11:23 PM (2yngH)

10 Okay, yes, it's improved but not completely fixed.  Will tweak it some more.

11 The ONT is still experiencing difficulties and a strong feelings of optimism, but mostly difficulties...

Posted by: s☺mej☼e at January 03, 2010 11:26 PM (22if9)

12 Maybe we should surrender and go back to the old comments thingy...

Posted by: s☺mej☼e at January 03, 2010 11:29 PM (22if9)

13 On the plus side it seems to be affecting all of the posts, not just the ONT...

Posted by: s☺mej☼e at January 03, 2010 11:31 PM (22if9)

14 Well, they're talking oil drilling on the ONT now. Loading seems to be doing okay...for now...

Posted by: wherestherum at January 03, 2010 11:33 PM (gofDd)

15 Bah, spoke too soon. Still having issues.

Posted by: wherestherum at January 03, 2010 11:34 PM (gofDd)

16 It is hit and miss, but mostly miss for me.      G'nite all.

Posted by: s☺mej☼e at January 03, 2010 11:36 PM (22if9)

17 Okay, I think I might have it now.  I tracked down why the system was running out of network buffers - and the answer (surprise!) is spammers.

Blocked the spammers.  Testing now to see if that's fixed it.

Posted by: Pixy Misa at January 03, 2010 11:47 PM (2yngH)

18 Seems to be working better now. Good work, Pixy! And many thanks.

23 Since china is ATTACKING the United States, shouldn't this be considered an act of WAR?  Now I do not know if anyone in the United States has died from these ATTACKS, however it is still an ATTACK and this crap has been going on for quite a while.  When will they find a computer that does support someones life over here.  Then we will do something about it?  A little late it would be, I do believe.

Isn't the server here in Dallas?

I could walk over and kick it for you.

Posted by: Michael Rittenhouse at January 04, 2010 03:31 AM (0Yeho)

25 Ace, have you been storing the Val-U-Rite in the server closet, where the hamsters, the spammers, and more importantly, Pixy, can find it?

Pixy + Val-U-Rite + servers = really bad combination.

Update: Do not cook the server hamsters!

I eat them raw myself, but either way they're a lot less effective at running on their little wheels after they're dead, eh?

Good Morning Morons;

Another fine day in another fine week. I see that I failed to make the top ten again this week. I guess IÂ’ll have to get more posts up there.

Big news of today on F&F (no surprises there).  A couple is pushing for new legislation on “domestic violence”.  I feel for them as their daughter was killed by her boyfriend.  Yes, that is bad but does that cause an amendment to the Constitution that gives the federal government the power and authority to legislate on local crimes?  Hell, does that crime warrant even local laws above what we already have?  The last time I checked it was already against the law to kill your girlfriend when she pissed you off.

One wonders why the producers at Fox are pushing this crap?  Could it be that the Supremes recently found the Lautenberg Amendment unconstitutional?  For those of you who are not knowledgeable on this score that is a 1996 law passed by the  REPUBLICAN congress.  It made gun ownership illegal for misdemeanor domestic violence or even for having a restraining order filed against you.

WhatÂ’s more, the law made no provisions for police or armed forces. If you were a cop when this law was passed you instantly became unable to do your job if your girl friend or wife got mad and filed a restraining order.

WhatÂ’s also more, the law did not address the root of the problem which is cops rarely prosecute domestic violence.  And why is that?  Because too often when it occurs the women involved change their minds when it comes to court and they donÂ’t want their “poor misunderstood other” to go to jail.

Of course Lautenberg knew that to begin with. He was a huge gun grabber and seized on that as an excuse and it took a decade and a ton of money to get rid of the stupid law via court action.

People, if your “significant other” beats the crap out of you it is already against the law. Press charges and have them thrown in jail.  DonÂ’t need any new laws.

30 I've been coughing and sneezing all morning and barely can get out of bed. I bet I'm running out of TCP buffers too!

My Jagger is ice cold and my pool is frozen.  Shit, I left the pump off last night an the damn thing froze.  First time.  Kinda neat, but Mr pump is back on the job now!

Never thought in CLT a pool would freeze in one night.  This global warming shit is getting old.

Posted by: Kemp at January 04, 2010 05:00 AM (2+9Yx)

32 Oh, it didn't freeze solid, shit I got 40,000 gallons.  That's take some serious global warming to freeze.

33 So when does the New Comments Thingy cease being "new" here?

Posted by: Robert at January 04, 2010 05:04 AM (3DCf8)

34 Pixy, thanks for your hard work.

That was a good explanation.

I was surprised to be participating in debate, despite the difficulties, with others leaving upwards of hundreds of comments on some threads.

That's a testament to the quality and interesting nature of your site.

So kudos to Ace and the other bloggers (and commenters) too.

Except Jeff Goldstein. He's an asshole.

That's the problem - hamsters taste like chicken.  You need to upgrade to gerbils - because they're bigger, they taste like turkey.
