Confirmed, Sayeth Jawa: Mullah Omar Was In Fact Captured
— Ace

That's pretty much all they have now.

Hm. If this is true -- and maybe it is -- this would be the most important story ever broken, and then confirmed, on a blog.

(Well, I guess RatherGate may be sort of more important, in some ways, but that wasn't actually broken on a blog (it was FreeRepublic) and there was never true "confirmation" because to this day the MFM pretends there is some doubt over whether the Killian memos were faked.)

12 It's not surprising, really. Good milbloggers have a lot better contacts inside the military than journos these days (hell, lots of milbloggers are, or were, military). I'm still a little leery of this report, though -- not so much that the story is a fake, per se, but that we captured some other Omar. Or that Pakistan had him, and let him get away.

25 It's probably better the Pakistanis have him in custody.  What is the CIA going to get from a guy who was wounded four times by Russians, including taking shrapnel to the eye, with the restrictions placed on them by The O?

At least there's a chance Omar slips up because he's relaxed and thinks he's among friends.

26 Sure hope that Omar was read his Miranda rights. Wouldn't want his arrest to be thrown out of court. Haven't heard of any drone attacks in the period that Omar was supposedly captured. Is this an indication that he is clamming up and that our High Value Interrogation team still doesn't exist and/or hasn't been allowed access (and thereby allowing Omar's terror pals enough time to vanish into the woodwork?

Supposedly they told us TEN days ago. However, no information on how long they've had him.

There is a possibility that those in Pockeystahn that are sympathetic to Mullah O simply kept him, and covered for him- ie, got word to his people that he was captured, and that they should go underground or change their plans or whatever. Essentially making him a useless target. That way they have the best of both worlds- get the reward $$$ and also protect their jihadi brothers.

86 It's hard for me to come up with a plausible political reason they might delay an announcement like this.  It might just be a case of keeping the bad guys in the dark.  I know in Iraq they typically don't announce the capture of bigwigs for a few days or weeks because they usually capture documents and computers at the same time.

You want to give your intel people as much time as you can to sort through everything so you can roll up as much of the network as possible before the bad guys realize they've been compromised.  In these kinds of organizations it wouldn't be normal to assume Omar was captured if you hadn't heard from him in awhile.

I question the political gain this will bring.  I doubt there would be a so called October/November surprise from this even if they did uncork it just before the election.

I contend that in the Bush era, terrorism was the number one thing ont he minds of the people.  Hence, a captured terrorist or a terrorist event just before the election would force people to vote for Bush and the Republicans since they were tougher on terrorism and this was the top issue with the voter from 2001-2004.

Now, the focus on the country is our economic crises of unemployment, deficit spending, high taxes.  Our attention really isn't on terrorism the way it was under Bush.  As evidence of this I point to the election results of 2006 and 2008.

Besides, Democrats really don't own the mantle of being tough on terrorism.  I think the best this will do is show America that the even the Obama anti-terrorist "strategy" can score a victory from time to time.  In truth it seems the Pakistani's are the ones that got him.

If the Democrats want an election bounce, they need good jobs and economic news.  As a counter, I'd like to see immigration and the debt crisi of Europe remain center stage.

Actually, I think I just figured out why this news is coming out now.  Obama needs a distraction from the failed socialism of Europe and Mexico.

@39: "Eight Amendment: Cruel and Unusual Punis...."

It always struck me as funny that the 8th banned cruel AND unusual punishment.  Under the laws of statutory construction, it must therefore be read in the conjunctive and not the disjunctive.  Effectively, to be banned under the 8th Amendment, any punishment would have to be both cruel and unusual.  Crucifixion, impalement, brazen bull, breaking on the wheel, etc. should all theoretically pass muster - they are certainly cruel, but they aren't unusual.  Likewise, anaesthetizing someone and then dropping them out of a plane would be ok, too.  Unusual, but not really cruel.

Shoving a live eel up someone's ass - like those guys did to their friend in China - would be right out, however.  That's both cruel and unusual.

191 The question is, what changed?

Pakistan is slowly coming to the realization that if they don't stop the Frankenstein monster they helped create, it will consume them.

It actually may be too late, since something like 1/3 the Pak population thinks radical Islam is the way to go.

Another angle in play here is the upcoming peace talks with India scheduled (I think) some time in June.  The Pakistanis will want to go into that looking like they're in control and capable of cleaning their own house.

If the Pakistan govt wants to maintain its control, being able to relax border deployments positioned against India would help a lot.

The people in control of Pakistan are the people in its Inter-Services Intelligence agency.  The civilian government's nominal control and the military's ability to engage militants are both subject to the machinations of the ISI, which created the Afghan Taliban and uses the various Islamic terrorist groups in proxy wars against India and the current Afghani government.  The ISI knows that America will leave the region eventually and will do everything in its power to keep its "toolkit" of extremist and terrorist groups available and able to be reconstituted to full strength when the USA is out of the picture.

Meanwhile, the ISI protects and enables terrorists in Pakistan who plan and execute attacks outside Pakistan.  The ISI is still protecting the terrorists who carried out the Mumbai terror attacks, and the ISI is strongly suspected (the link above) of having played a role in preparing the Times Square Wouldbebomber.

Posted by: IllTemperedCur at May 11, 2010 08:00 PM (9Lm5R)

A possibility: maybe Pakistani intelligence saw an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. Picking up Mullah Omar prevented him from being captured or killed by American forces (not that there are Americans making cross-border raids into Pakistan to snatch terrorist targets, but there are lots of Predator drones overhead). Picking up Mullah Omar also gave Pakistani intelligence something to use as a bargaining chip, to announce when, say, Hillary Clinton accused Pakistan of not doing enough to fight the Taliban and Al-Qaeda. Sorta kinda funny that we're finding out about his capture right at the same time that the USA is looking into whether Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence agency was involved with the Times Square Wouldbebomber.

228 I'm kind of concerned about this, the main topic. Look, there may have been a good reason why they weren't telling anyone about Omar's capture, you know? What if they were keeping it secret so the bad guys weren't sure what happened. Maybe they didn't want the Taliban to know how they did it. Maybe they are still squeezing him for information and while there was any uncertainty to his capture by the coalition forces, he still was useful.

I'm not real comfortable with this scoop, I gotta tell you.

And it won't help him with the "independents", because they are all too worried about who Tiger Woods is fuckin' today and who is on American Idol.

And it won't help him with conservatives or Republicans, because we all know Obama's a pussy and foreign policy is a distraction for this admentruation. It's the guys in the field that capture bad guys. Not some joker on the golf course sucking on Kools.

I imagine that David Comboverod and Rahm the Shower Ballerina are wiping the drool off of Bama's lip and getting him ready to take credit anyway.

Seems to me it's a big enough story that secrecy for long would be unlikely - if he has been in custody over a week, others should be picking up the noise from the Taliban.

Call me a skeptic, but "confirmation" means at least TWO separate and distinct sources, NOT the same report popping up unsourced in two places.
