Congratulations to Congressman-elect Charles Djou!
— Gabriel Malor

He just won President Obama's childhood district in the special election in Hawaii after the national Democrats ended up in a civil war with the local Democrats. Obama got 70 percent of the vote there in 2008.

Djou won 39.5 percent of the vote. Hanabusa, the DCCC candidate, got 30.8 percent. Case, the local Dems and union candidate, got 27.6 percent.

More:

Djou will be the first Republican to represent Hawaii in Congress since Pat Saiki, who served from 1986-1990. He will have to begin campaigning again almost immediately, as the seat will be up for grabs again in the November general election.

This breaks the six eleven (see correction) seat special election streak Democrats have been on in the House. Correction: it looks like it was an eleven seat streak (counting PA-12).

Congrads.  How likely is this to repeat in November (the multiple Dem candidates, etc)?

These are just the sort of districts Dems need to win in order to still have seats in Comgress.  Ha!

5 Unless I'm mistaken, this is the first time since Randy Forbes picked up the late Norm Sisisky's vacant Virginia seat in 2001 that the GOP has flipped a Democrat House seat in a special election.

And it's Obama's "home" district.

Related to the House Race stories, from the Washington Post, buried at the end of thier story, a very snort worthy comment (via NoVa political blog BlackVelvetBruceLi.net).

Primary elections help define President Obama's role in midterm elections

"Let me get this straight: If you think I can't win, you're not going to spend political capital on me, even though I spill buckets of blood for you?" Connolly said. "The White House can't be [keeping] distance from people who have walked the plank for them, even when they might lose. Loyalty matters in this business."

It is really our blood, our sweat and our taxes that he and his fellow conspirators spill. And he is now worried about his bloody paycheck? It aint just TEA that has us upset.

This Northern Virginia (VA-11) clown Connelly deserves to find another job. very soon. With other buckets. It might just be the janitor.

50 The key in special elections is always getting your side turned out.  In this case, it was very high for some reason.

In the recent special in my district that put Wexler clone Deutch in office, turnout was very very low, ~50K total.

55 I love the pictures I've seen of him and his family, he seems like such a nice man with such a nice family.

O/T:  "Democratic strategist James Carville and MSNBC anchor Chris Matthews, two reliable supporters of President Barack Obama, have issued withering critiques of the administrationÂ’s handling of the Gulf oil spill.

Carville, the famously outspoken Louisianian who was a chief political aide to Bill and Hillary Clinton, told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Thursday that the administration’s response to the spill has been “lackadaisical” and that Obama was “naive” to trust BP to manage the massive clean-up effort."

Doesn't carville live in Louisiana?  This may be the first sign we have that hillary is on her way back into the spotlight.

Posted by: fiatboomer at May 22, 2010 10:55 PM (0Wf6c)

57 Gabe - I think you've swapped the DCCC-supported candidate (Case) with the local Democrats' choice (Hanabusa).  Case is a white guy who lives just outside the district (which is a minority-majority district, being Hawaii and all).

Turnout in the special election was actually higher than the 2006 off-year HI-1 Congressional election.  Perhaps not surprising, since it was a mail-in election.

Posted by: cinyc at May 22, 2010 11:08 PM (Vk5UZ)

58 This is a bellweather of doom for the Democrat party. They lose the Kennedy seat, barely hold the Murtha seat, and lose Obama's home district (at least the home district not in Nairobi). Factor in the Democrats applase of the Mexican president, re-crashing economy and non-response to the oil spill, the Pubs should pick up 300 seats.

62 Walter:

Oh, really? So what? You're are being shortsighted as to what just happened.
And it gets worse for them (and the DNC) and better for Charles Djou. If neither Case or Hanabusa drop their bid for nomination, Djou owns the seat in Nov. as well. Even worse, the minute that Case announces that he runs as an Independent, the Democrats lose big. The Republicans, not so much. Also, the Democrats despise Case (especially one known as Sen. Dan Inoyue) b/c he ran vs. Akaka in the 2006 US Senate primary. (He should have waited to "inherit" either Senate seat, the same way that Mark Critz got the seat from his old boss, Jack Murtha in the House.). Unless Case can convince DNC leaders he's their choice, the Democrats have no chance to get the seat back.

Now who's the dummy here?

69 It will be a long time until 2012. It still looks like we will be able to take the House which will at least provide a way to thwart a lot of this nonsense but taking the Senate is a low probability thing. Taking the Senate with enough to achieve anything is impossible.

Perhaps we can undo a lot of this crap after 2012 but even there I have my doubts. We see once again from that mess of a financial bill the RINOs stepped forward to help the communists.

I am more and more thinking the only way we will ever be able to save some semblance of a Republic is to hold an article V convention and take it away from Congress.

And there the odds are more in favor of fragmenting the nation than in saving the Republic.

72 Actually Vic, taking the Senate is not as low a probability as you might think.
To win, R's need 10 seats plus hold all their existing seats.

R's have to hold in OH, MO, NH and FL.  The polls now in these show R's leading.

R's have to take: ND, DE, IL, IN, NV, CO, PA, CA, AR, CT.
ND and DE: these are almost certain locks
IN, AR, NV look good.
PA and IL look okay, not great.
CO and CT - these will be tough
CA - ??? (complete wild card)

It's doable.
